• How well does Intel 3000 HD work on Ubuntu?

  Right now i have notebook with Nvidia 8400M GS (I know, it's not good card) and it's impossible to work normally when i'll plugin external monitor (1920x1080). Windows 7 can deal with it without problems (1440x900 on notebook + 1920x1080 external). On Ubuntu i have to choose one screen and turn off the second one. Even with only one screen Ubuntu (Unity or even Gnome3) sometimes hangs for a while, I've not found solution for this yet, but nevermind, it's probably because of my card or/and nvidia's drivers. I'm going to buy new PC, but for now only with integrated Intel 3000HD, and my question is: Should i expect similar problems with this card? Here i've found link to Intel's webpage about drivers - "only community develop them", and i'm a bit concerned. I'll use then only one monitor (the bigger one), but how well does those driver work? Are there any performance tests?

• It's 2011 - why do I still have to use tables for email?

  This might seem like a rant, but I am curious. CSS replaced tables for layout a long time ago. But we still have to use tables for layout when creating rich emails. Why is this? Are there any other options? Are there really technical constraints that prevent CSS from working in an email. What are they? I can see how linked or embedded style sheets might be a problem, but not even inline styles work. Is this ever going to change?

• Web Development Internship Interview Help

  Tomorrow morning I'm interviewing for a web development internship position and I'm seeking general advice pertaining to the questions that interviewers might ask, some questions I should ask them during the interview, and any general tips/suggestions that might help. They're looking for someone with knowledge mainly in HTML/CSS, Joomla, MySQL and PHP, all of which I have excluding Joomla (which I'm installing/doing as much research on as possible at the moment) and I was able to provide them a link to a site I'd been paid to build for a small business which they mentioned they were impressed with. I'd like to prepare myself for the interview as much as I possibly can but I'm wondering how much time I should spend rehashing elements of the languages they're looking for, or if it'd be a better use of my time to research their company and figure out how I'd respond to general questions. I feel that perhaps because I showed them a project I've completed that they'll know that I can grasp the technical side of what they're going for... but this is my first internship interview in this field so I'm not exactly sure what to expect. • Making it myself vs. modifying someone else's code as a beginner

  I just started getting into open source projects mainly for the learning experience. I've made a few tiny contributions to some small projects. Most of my time has been spent just reading over other people's code and trying to understand how it works. Often times I find myself frustrated by a lack of documentation and unit tests. There are also times where I think I can see a more intuitive solution to a problem, but implementing it would require large restructuring of code. I see all this and wonder to myself why I don't just start clean on the whole thing by myself and do things "the right way"? I'd also enjoy the experience of building it from scratch, as it would force me to learn skills that I might not learn by working on other people's code. On the other hand, working on other people's code is also a great experience because it requires me to understand and work with other people's code and collaborate with them. It's just harder, IMO. Thoughts?

• We Heart Discussion Forums (and Know You Do Too)

  It's not generally known, but Oracle (via Oracle Technology Network) hosts one of the largest discussion forums instances (forums.oracle.com) on the planet (founded in 2001), containing nearly 10 million messages from 1 million registered users. That's a whole lot of conversations! And we really, really value those conversations - they span almost every conceivable technical subject across hundreds of products and technologies. More often not - and this is by design - those discussions are stewarded by community volunteers, many of whom are Oracle ACEs (who in fact earned their ACE stripes that way). And so, I am very happy to tell you that we have just initiated a project with our platform partner, Jive Software, to upgrade that platform to the most current, modern version available. The end result should be a vastly improved user experience for everyone involved, in all dimensions. There are many, many details to work on in coming weeks, but we'll keep you posted - and, when needed, come back to you for advice and suggestions. For now, we just wanted to share the good news!

  I have been working on my personal website for sometime, I think I have been doing a good technical job, but, unfortunately I did a terrible job while structuring the website because I didn't care about the keywords I was going to use. Although it is my personal website, I'd like to mention the main objective is the blog of the website, so I'd like that the keywords were related to the content that it is in the blog, at present google webmaster tools is displaying a lot of keywords that has nothing to do with the content of the website, and some SEO reporting websites such as woorank says that the keyword optimization of the website is awful, So I have 3 questions: How to choose, set and use keywords while structuring a website? OPTIONAL: which are all the methods and sources used by search engines to collect the keywords of a website? there are some high profile websites that aren't optimized on this as well, should I concerned about this anyway?, is there anything more important that I should be concerned about? • Google analytics/adwords account and leaking of private data

  I am frequently asked to log into clients google analytics and adwords accounts. If I forget to log out before visiting other google properties (google search, youtube etc), this leaves tracks of my views/searches etc, exposing my activities to the client. Summary: Client gives me access to their Google Analytics / AdWords account I log into clients Analytics account and do some stuff Then in another tab I perform some related google searches to solve some related issues Issues solved, I then close the Analytics tab I then visit google.com, perform some unrelated searches I then visit YouTube, view some unrelated videos All Web and YouTube searches are recorded in clients google account, thus leaking potentially sensitive data Even assuming that I remember to log out correctly at step 4 (as I do 95% of the time), anything I do at step 3 is exposed to the client. I would be surprised if this is not a very common issue. I'm looking for a technical solution to ensure that this can never happen. Any ideas?

  I would like to gain the "Oracle Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) Developer" certification. According to this page I have to take a number of classes each of which costs up to a couple of thousand GB£. Is this really the only way to obtain the certification? Can I not just buy a certification guide book from amazon and just sit the requisite tests? At the moment I have no Java EE experience and I'm finding it impossible to get interviews for the jobs I'm interested in. I'm hoping this will at least help me get my foot through the door.

• My application's bounce rate jumped from 30% to 80% overnight

  My application is provided as a service that is embedded in other sites. I have google analytics installed on the login popup dialog which is a page of my application, which is opened from the host site (OAuth). About a week ago, I've noticed a sharp decrease in the number of new users registrations and a jump in the bounce rate (from ~30% to ~80%). This happened without any change in the application. I looked into technical parameters like page load time and error rates, but could not see any change in there. Any ideas what can cause this behavior?

• Seperate .com domain name purchasing for a VPS

  I am looking at getting a VPS with RackSRV, and they don't sell domain names, but are happy to set it up after I get one elsewhere. Can anyone recommend somewhere I can purchase just the domain, and not have any hassles moving it afterwards? (Or can I just purchase the domain and make it point at the RackSRV ip address, while still using the domain sellers' control panel? I don't really understand that part of it enough! :)) I want the domain name registered in my name, ideally with myself as the technical and administrative contacts for simple transfers.

• How to manage a growing team?

  I'm the admin assistant of the CTO and our organization has recently experienced a lot of growth. Within six months, we have merged with another organization and our Dev team has grown from 8 to 16, with another 8 people in QA. What we're dealing with now is a highly technical individual, with little patience, managing a much larger team than he's accustomed to, 40% of which is junior as well as an increase in the number of projects. Needless to say, my boss is being pulled in too many directions at once. How can I help him manage his workload and his team so that the team feels they're getting enough help and support and remain effective? Also, where can I find additional resources on managing a growing team?

  I would like to write some rules for a game I have in head but I don't know how to do that. So are there some methodologies or modeling tools (like UML) to do that? I'm thinking about a kind of tree of competencies or some kind of map to be sure that the game is well balanced. I always wonder how the team who imagines some powers in magic the gathering for example does it. Do they have some diagrams to be sure the powers or creatures they imagine are well balanced for the entire game? I'm pretty noob in the game creation so I'll be happy with some directions to seek.. • How do you write straight to the point documentation without looking sloppy and informal?

  I'm currently at a contract position and am looking to add to the documentation of the projects I worked on, to assist the next hiree taking over my projects. The documentation I received was overly technical (i.e. references code right away, references replacing certain values on certain lines, no high level description at all) How do I write documentation in simple plain English that is of actual benefit without looking sloppy? I find it difficult in areas such as outlining a system's flaws without coming off as judgmental, but still emphasize the severity of how detrimental some of the flaws are.

• What's the best way to explain branching (of source code) to a client?

  The situation is that a client requested a number of changes about 9 months ago which they then put on hold with them half done. They've now requested more changes without having made up their mind to proceed with the first set of changes. The two sets of changes will require alterations to the same code modules. I've been tasked with explaining why them not making a decision about the first set of changes (either finish them or bin them) may incur additional costs (essentially because the changes would need to be made to a branch then if they proceed with the first set of changes we'd have to merge them to the trunk - which will be messy - and retest them). The question I have is this: How best to explain branching of code to a non-technical client?

• Test Doubles : Do they go in "source packages" or "test packages"?

  I've got a couple of data access objects (DefaultPersonServices.class, DefaultAddressServices.class) which is responsible for various CRUD operations in a database. A few different classes use these services, but as the services requires that a connection is established with a database I can't really use them in unit tests as they take too long. Thus, I'd like to create a test doubles for them and simply do FakePersonServices.class and FakeAddressService.class implementations which I can use throughout testing. Now, this is all good (I assume)...but my question relates to where I put the test doubles. Should I keep them along with the default implementations (aka "real" implementations) or should I keep them in a corresponding test package. The default implementations are found in Source Packages : com.company.data.services. Should I keep the test doubles here too, or should the test doubles rather be in Test Packages : com.company.data.services?

• Need a remote desktop to a headless server without logging in first

  I've been using Linux for many years now but only to run servers. Over the last few days I've been struggling with a technical / configuration issue which I hope someone can help with. I've installed / un-installed many packages but just can't figure out what the "right" way of doing this is. The requirement seems simple Server runs Ubuntu 10.04 with xubuntu and SSH (I do NOT want to connect any screen, keyboard or mouse to the server) I have Windows 7 machine with putty on it and logging in to the server using SSH is fine I want to run an xterminal session on my Windows machine. Amongst the things I've tried is VNU but I can't get it to work because I believe you have to login on the server first. Thanks in advance

• Flash site loads slowly

  I have a simple html page that embeds an swf, that downloads other xml, swf and image files. The total count of the requests reaches about 90. I am aware that it should take a while until the content is available and I am OK with that. All the needed files are hosted by two different providers in the US: flashxml.net/monochrome-demo.html and u1.flashcomponents.net/samples/8751/index.html From two different countries in Europe, the content shows up a lot later (almost twice as later) from flashxml, than flashcomponents. I've done mtr tests and the ping difference is about 40ms and the flashxml server load is below 1. Do you have any other suggestions as to what should I look at?
