• Ubuntu 14.04 disk utility SMART self-test failed threshold not exceeded

  I'm using the "Disks" program in Ubuntu 14.04 (live DVD) to assess the health of a drive I suspect is failing. However, when I first opened the program, it showed that the overall health was OK and all assessments are OK as well. I then tried to run a short self-test, but now the overall assessment shows a red "SELF-TEST FAILED". In the details section it says "Last self-test failed (read)" and "threshold not exceeded". All individual assessments are still OK though!! What I don't understand is, does that mean that the test executed and determined that the drive is a goner, or does it mean that the test didn't actually execute properly?

• Wireless card not found on Ubuntu

  Hello all, I'm trying to setup Ubuntu on an old PC. I ran the following command, lspci, in order to get info on the wireless card installed. 00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88w8335 [Libertas] 802.11b/g Wireless (rev 03) Does anyone know where I can get drivers for this card/chip? And also, how to install (I'm rather new to linux). Also, I'm sure the card is working because I just formatted over xp, and everything was working well. Thanks in advanced!

• Does multiple files in SQL Server when using RAID help reduce conflicts in growth and file-locking?

  I've been reading around and get the impression that if you are using RAID then using multiple SQL Server files within a filegroup won't yeild any more improvements, and the benefits are purely administrative (if you started to run out of space or wanted to partition off data into managable chunks for backups/balancing the data around your big server room). However, being a reasonably savvy software person, it's not unthinkable to hypothesise that, even for smaller databases that SQL Server will perform growth and locking operations (for writes) on a LOGICAL file basis, so even if you are using RAID, it seems to make sense to have multiple files in a file group to balance I/O, or does the time taken to reconstruct the data from distributed filegroups outweigh the benefits of reduced locking? I'm also aware that the behaviour and benefits may be different for tables/indeces/log. Is there a good site that distinguishes the benefits of multiple files when RAID is already in place?

• Ubuntu 10.04 install - frozen at splash, no errors

  Has anyone else come across this? After about as much of a fresh install as i can muster without buying new drives, and after walking through the amd64 alternate install with ease, and after a little 'pre-splash' screen where the orange dots under the (very sexy) new ubuntu logo blink away, I'm left with a vista of purple hues and logo plonked in the middle, with the dots not going anywhere. I was at this same position last night at 3 in the morning, left it lying overnight, and nothing had changed, so I'm pretty sure its frozen, but when i go in and inspect /var/log/* in the recovery console, no errors, no complaints, no problems. I'm at my wits end and am just about ready to try anything. If this was on SO I'd be bountying, but if anyone can help you'll just have to cope with my thanks!   i've got some questions about how it works: so ubuntu server comes with postfix installed. if i want my php script to send a mail to lets say [email protected], how does it work? do i have to specify any ip to another MTA (my ISP's MTA?) in postfix's configuration file? and if someone sends back, will it get to my ip? is it postfix that receives it? or has it to do with fetchmail?

• Windows 2008 DHCP service fails - "...failed to see a directory server for authorization."

  I have a small environment running Windows 2008 R2 where the DHCP service on the domain controller fails every two weeks. The most-visible error is Event ID 1059 and the Event Viewer message is: "The DHCP service failed to see a directory server for authorization." The setup features two domain controller and the usual services and roles (file, print, Exchange). Restarting the service fails for a variety of reasons. I've had the following messages at different times: "Not enough storage is available to complete this operation". "Unable to determine the DHCP Server version for the Server 192.168.x.x" "The DHCP service has detected that it is running on a DC and has no credentials configured for use with Dynamic DNS registrations initiated by the DHCP service." A reboot of the domain controller resolves the issue for ~2 weeks. The systems are virtualized and there are no network connectivity issues. Any ideas what's happening here?

• Windows Server Backup - Can I restore to a particular revision?

  I'm using Windows Server Backup in Windows Server 2008 to do a scheduled daily backup to a dedicated hard-drive on the server. I noticed that under "All backups" it says I have 45 copies. Does this mean that I can restore to any revision of my data upon system failure? If the answer is yes, then I don't have to worry about taking monthly or weekly snapshots of my data. I'm concerned about a data corruption event occurring that working its way into my backups... then not having a clean snapshot to go back to. Thanks!

  I want to remove apache as if it was never installed, no config files left behind. I intend to reinstall apache2 fresh. I have tried various combinations of apt-get options to no success. apt-get remove apache2 apt-get remove --purge apache2 apt-get purge apache2 apt-get autoremove apache2 None of these totally remove apache properly. Nothing works, the /etc/apache2 directory still exists. So I deleted it. When I install apache the folder is never created. Running Ubuntu server 10.10.

  Hi, I was thinking about installing Ubuntu 9.10 32bit on a DELL Inspiron 1501 with 64bit processor Laptop. Since It's was real pain to me to run Java Browser plugin, Flash Plugin, J2ME Toolkit, and many other tools. But It was 90% OK with me. This was Ubuntu 8.10 (a year ago), And now the Ubuntu 9.10 came and I'm thinking about installing the 32 bit on it and get rid of the pain. Is there a downside for that?? considering that the display card is not supported now so exclude this from your calculation, I will never play REAL games on it and I'm not a big fan of Compiz effects. I'm not here to ask about the performance (which is about 15%+ for the 64bit only), I just want compatibility!

  We had our samba server (ubuntu 8.04 ltr) share fill up the other day but when I went to look at it I cant see any of the shares have to much on them we have 5 group shares and then each users has an individual share one users has 22gigs of stuff a few others have 10-20mb of stuff and everyone else is empty so maybe like 26gigs total I deleted a few files yesterday and freed up about 250mb of space today when i checked it it was completely full again and i deleted some older files and freed up about 170mb of stuff but i can watch it slowly creep down in free space.   Hello, I am sort of new to web hosting so sorry if I ask bad questions. I have a pc that runs ubuntu I instaled apache and now I host a web site, but I need a domain name so I found out .tk is free. The site works when typing 192.168.1.x in the browser(x= a number) but in dot.tk when I register in ip it whats one that look like 79.117.x.x so thats where I get stuck, I think I managed to make my ip address static but it still looks like 192.168.1.x and I can't put that in because it says: " This IP address is not valid". Why must it have the ip address that looks like 79.117.x.x and won't work with the internal static one and how can I do to host my site with a .tk domain name ? PS: I'm using a cisco router that's connected with computer via a cable.

  Hey guys i just installed cacti on a ubuntu 12.04 server and am having issues with any data showing up on my graphs. If i snmpwalk the certain OID it works. I have tailing on the cacti.log file and i see it polling the values correctly but nothing ever graphs. Is there anything i can check with regards to snmp or something in cacti that may be causing this to not work? I have already checked in my php.ini and have set the timezone, someone was mentioning that may cause issues.

• Can't the NetworkManager applet to appear in the Gnome panel in Ubuntu

  I have researched this problem extensively and I can't seem to find an answer. In Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, I want to connect to my VPN through the NetworkManager applet. I installed all the network manager packages, including the gnome client. I understand I need to add the "Notification Area" to the panel, which I have done. I checked that the NetworkManager is running: nate@nate-desktop:~$ service network-manager status network-manager start/running, process 763 In /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf, I have added managed=true (don't know if this matters, but I saw it suggested on one forum): nate@nate-desktop:~$ more /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf # This file is installed into /etc/NetworkManager, and is loaded by # NetworkManager by default. To override, specify: '--config file' # during NM startup. This can be done by appending to DAEMON_OPTS in # the file: # # /etc/default/NetworkManager # [main] plugins=ifupdown,keyfile [ifupdown] #managed=false managed=true At this point, it looks like NetworkManager is running but it's not appearing in the NotificationArea of the panel. I don't know what else to try. Any ideas?

  Currently I'm hosting my own (ubuntu) server with the following services: samba, ftp and a webserver. I've bought a domain and linked the DNS A-record to my ISP's IP. This is working correctly. Now I'd like to use the DNS wildcard-record to create subdomains. I want to avoid waiting 24hrs before the DNS change completes. Thusfar I'm only able to redirect all incoming wildcards to the same directory: test1.domain.com redirects to /var/www test2.domain.com redirects to /var/www Although I'd like to get: test1.domain.com redirects to /var/www/test1 test2.domain.com redirects to /var/www/test2 My guess would be to change the file /etc/apache2/sites-available/domain. • Accidentally replaced the partition table using GParted in UBUNTU

  Hello, This machine has UBUNTU & wINDOWS XP. I'm currently logged into UBUNTU. I was just checking the features of GParted and accidentally clicked Device > Create Partition Table. A default MS-DOS partition table is created. Now if I re-start the Gparted there is nothing. Its showing entire disk as UNALLOCATED space. Lucky thing is All the drives (C:, D:, E:) are currently mounted and I'm in UBUNTU. I guess its possible to re-create the partition table using current status. But I don't know how? Can any one kindly tell me how to do this. This is a lab computer. If its not recoverable. I'm completely screwed!!

  Basically, using the latest available ubuntu drivers (195.36.15) I cannot for the life of me get my two monitors to operate at suitable resolutions. When not using the drivers atall and going single-screen, both monitors support 1680x1050, but this option is only shown for one monitor in nvidia-settings, and when i manually add a metamode into the xorg.conf, it just gives up initialising the second screen.   I have been attempting to install Ubuntu (10.04, Lucid Lynx) on my computer. I wasn't ready to take the pure-Linux plunge yet, so I reserved a partition on which I would install Ubuntu. I ran the installer and answered the 'minor' questions (keyboard layout, time zone, etc.), but had trouble when I reached the partitioning. I have several partitions, but Ubuntu only saw one of them, which was not the ext3 partition that I had set up. I tried deleting the partition in hope that the installer would find and utilize the empty space, but it only saw the original partition. I do not have an external hard drive to use, and I cannot clear any existing partitions. Am I running the installer incorrectly, or is there a more serious problem?

I'm using the command line apt-get -qy install proftpd-basic >/tmp/install.log For most packages, this approach would work fine, however proftpd-basic appears to require some interaction (it asks whether to perform an inetd or standalone installation). Is it possible for me to pre-select this option on the command line somehow, as I don't want the user to be bothered by this question? - For info, if it matters, I want to choose the 'standalone' option.

  Hi, I had a Vista partition and created a partition and installed Ubuntu 9.10. During the Ubuntu installation I unchecked "Install Boot Loader" so it didn't install the GRUB bootloader. I wanted to keep Vistas boot loader so I could manage it within Vista as I know you can - Ive just forgot where in the Control Panel you do it! Anyway for some reason I incorrectly assumed that the Ubuntu entry would be added to the Vista boot loader. How do enable to choose which OS to use during booting up the computer as at the moment it just automatically loads Vista?   I have a minimal install of Ubuntu 10.4 Server for testing and learning purposes. There is a very annoying occurrance: whenever I try to "man dpkg" or any command that load a few screens length of text (eg. "ls -al") the redraw speed of the console is just way too slow. I can see how each new line causes the whole screen to redraw. Note: that this doesn't happen inside X. No gui is installed. I have been experimenting with adding vesafb to the grub line as some guides suggested, but no speedups happened. You might be able to reproduce this behaviour on your linux system by switching to terminal using CTRL+ALT+F1. Is there any way to speed scrolling up?

• Ubuntu 9.10 is not starting on netbook

  I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my external hard drive cause it's cool to be able to borrow a friend's laptop and be able to have my entire system. It works on the 2 systems i tested it on: my desktop and my mom's laptop. I had to work on something earlier so i borrowed my friend's netbook. I started it up, chose Ubuntu 9.10.20 and it got to the Ubuntu loading screen with the 3 people holding hands right before user selection then it suddenly went black. Naturally, i freaked out because it wasn't my laptop. I held the power button down and reset the netbook but the screen was still black, it didn't even show the BIOS. I repeated the process without my hard drive, and it was still black without the BIOS showing up. I had to remove the battery, plug it to a power source, and power up to start the netbook up again. Can anyone tell me what happened?
