• Can not install Ubuntu on Samsung Ultrabook Series 5 (Win 7!)

  I have a Samsung Ultrabook Series 5 with Windows 7 (which I want to keep)... I can boot from a USB stick without a problem and ubuntu work fine, but when I want to install it, the installation progress is stopped and it won't go further. It stop with the message: Checking filesystem Before that, I got also a message, that the system can't unmount the /cdrom (which the ultrabook doesn't have!) Thank you very much for help!

• How can I use cron-apt to download and install updates between midnight and 5am?

  I have capped data which is essentially free between midnight and 5am. As a result, I would like to set Ubuntu to automatically download updates over that time. It seems that cron-apt is what I need, but the documentation and syntax is sketchy and unintuitive. Can anyone tell me how to use it to schedule downloads? It can install the updates at the same time as far as I'm concerned, but that's not such a big issue - I can run those at a later stage.

• New laptop, Windows 8.1, attempting dual install. Ubuntu installer doesn't 'see' existing OS

  Though I've used Ubuntu for a few years, I'm new to installation. Previously I had help and now I'm doing it alone (moved across the world). Windows 8.1 came preinstalled on my new laptop (Toshiba Satellite C70-A-17C - Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD). I have already followed a few steps I found online to prepare for a dual install (with Ubuntu 14.04). I backed up Windows, created a bootable Ubuntu USB and DVD (just in case one didn't work), turned off fast boot and secure boot, and shrunk C:/. The new unallocated drive portion is 292.97 GB. After shrinking C:/, I restarted Windows a couple of times to make sure everything was working fine (it is). I then attempted to install with the Ubuntu live USB. However, the Ubuntu installer doesn't see that Windows 8.1 is already installed. I don't understand, and don't want to mess with Ubuntu partitioning when I don't know where the partitions will be created. My concern is that, if I go further with the installation process, Windows might be overwritten or compromised in some way. I then tried to reboot using the Ubuntu live DVD, thinking I might get a different result. However, I can't figure out how to make the laptop boot from the CD drive. I went into the BIOS and found no option there, either. Any help is very appreciated! EDIT: Looks like I can't link directly to each photo. Here is my album of screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/zChCo Here you can see that there's no option to boot from CD drive, only USB. Everything looks okay so far. I don't understand this. Ubuntu has not yet been installed. Unmounting partitions? (I chose 'no'.) Even though the laptop came pre-installed with Windows 8.1, the Ubuntu USB installer can't see it. I chose 'something else'. I need to pick and format partitions. I scrolled down and took a second shot to include all information. Completely lost and cancelled installation.

• Live CD works OK. Is it OK to assume a new install will work?

  I've got a Toshiba a505 laptop and tried the live CD with great results. However, I haven't found any reports on this PC working 100% OK on Ubuntu 10.10 yet. I do have seen (and tried installing myself) some reports that 10.04 didn't work (without some dirty hacking). In regular circumstances, is it OK to assume that a new install will work if the live CD works? Are there any tools I can run to check compatibility? Thanks!

This is either because of a semantic error such as an incompatibility with the existing WMI repository or an actual error such as the failure of the WMI server to start. It seems that mofcomp is failing with one of the .mof files, but I'm not sure which, or why. Digging through the connect article gave some indications, but no solution. I've run winmgmt /salvagerepository, which returns "WMI repository is consistent". Currently, I'm unable to install MSSQL 2008. Please help!

  Using CentOS 5.7, how do I install GCC version 4.6? I just installed version 4.4 using # yum install gcc44 but that version still doesn't support variable length arrays from C99 standard.   I have the following rubber pins with my new case fan: I'm not sure how to install these. They are obvious to install into the case, the rubber pulls easily into the screw hole and stays in place, however the fan they came with they do not seem to fit in the screw holes at all. I put the thin side into the fan and pulled so hard that it actually snapped the rubber, so obviously that is not the correct method. How do you install these rubber pins into stubborn fans of which they were designed for?

  Basically, I want to make an image of one Linux install I have, and distribute it over similar (if not identical) spec machines on a network. I know it is possible, however am unsure of what needs to be done before I make the image of the install to ensure it works correctly on all machines. First think I know needs to be done, is remove all interface configuration, as I assume it would just jump to eth1 (and possibly use the same MAC), as it wont locate the network interface it had before, how would I do this so it auto detects and goes to eth0 again? Is there anything else I would need to do to the install before I make its image?

  This problem has persisted since I first tried out Windows 8 Consumer Preview, and also affects Windows 8, Windows 8.1 Preview, and Windows 8.1. Specifically, the problem occurs when I try to install apps from the Windows Store on a Globe Tattoo Broadband or Smart Bro dial-up connection (two common ways of connecting to the internet in the Philippines). I can confirm that this isn't a problem with my copy of Windows or my Microsoft account because I was able to install any app on other connections like public WiFi. This problem has persisted on three different dongles and two different computers. So why can't I install apps on those two specific types of connections?

  I need to run the latest version of Node and NPM on Windows. I installed Node 0.5.8 and downloaded the sources of NPM from GitHub. But I found no way to tell the installer to use my credentials for login. Is there a possibility to provide my proxy IP and login information to npm installation maybe via command-line arguments? I can provide the full log (but seems to have no more relevant information) using pastebin if needed.

• Is there any reason to install software as root as opposed to sudo installing software as a sudoer?

  I'm setting up a new server running Ubuntu Server Edition, and I'm not certain what the difference would be between installing most of the basic software as root, vs installing the basic software as an admin user using sudo apt-get install . For one thing, I'm not sure whether after installing the software as root, I'll need sudo access when running the software as a user (e.g. if I install git as root). On the other hand, if I install software as a user, I could conceive of it not being available to other users that I create in the future. What's the best practice here?

  I have a 2TB hard drive with 2 partitions on it, one a C drive for WinXP and another for extra space. I have a Win7 Pro install DVD and I have formatted that C drive via the DVD; it is now a blank "Primary" partition. I attempted to go through the Win7 setup and install it on that partition, but it's giving me an error: Setup unable to create new system partition or locate existing system partition. See setup log files for more info Googling around leads me to believe the entire drive has to be "cleaned" (diskpart) but that would wipe the entire other non-OS partition and I need to keep that data. How can I install Win7 on this blank partition without losing data on the other partition?

  I am trying to install the Chromium OS on an EEE PC 901, and I have succeeded in using Image Writer for Windows 0.2r23 to copy the IMG file to an SDHC card. Since the OS speed is limited by slow card access, I'd like to install the Chromium OS on the second, unused, internal SSD Drive, D:. However, Image Writer doesn't allow me to restore an internal drive from an IMG file. To be clear: I boot in XP on C: then run Image Writer to install the Chromium OS. Does anyone know how I can either convince Image Writer that D: is a removable drive or know of alternative program that will let me restore D: from an IMG file (non-windows file system)?

  I need to install CPAN and some Perl modules automatically in a Scientific Linux (RHEL) installation script. Unfortunately the specific modules I want (at least one of them) cannot be found as RPM:s as far as I've seen. So I need to install CPAN, configure it automatically (or with a config file) and then install the wanted modules (including dependencies) automatically as well. This doesn't seem like a very unusual requirement, but I haven't seen any really good documentation on this. The problem is that whenever CPAN is launched for the first time an interactive configuration runs. Can this be skipped somehow? And how do I launch module installations directly from the command line?

  I've been trying to install hiphop-php on CentOS 6 with no luck. I found an .rpm for it but it fails dependency checks on boost which fails to install because it depends on curl which fails to install because it can't overwrite /etc/lib64/libcurl.so.4 I can't remove the current curl version because half the system seems to depend on it. Has anybody had any luck doing this? It's driving me mad. I tried compiling from source but that's even more hellish and I really have no idea what I'm doing anyway.

Is there any way to install openSUSE as a commandline server in my home network but using a wifi internet connection? Preferably from the get-go and not simply installing with LAN cable internet and then installing some wifi things later.   I was trying to bring up my custom kernel. I did the following : make menuconfig && make modules && make modules_install && make install I would like to change the install PATH. How can i do that? I tried doing export INSTALL_PATH=<my custom path> But then it is only creating the vmlinux.bin(it is not creating the ramdisk image!!) But if i am not doing that, make install will automatically create the ramdisk image in the default /boot folder. How can i change that?? Thanks, Sen

Now, the boot manager is GRUB Loader and everything works fine as Ubuntu detected that Windows 7 has been installed already. Now, I would like to install Windows 8 too. I plan to install using a bootable USB stick(doesn't matter which medium I prefer though. Does it? ). I have done some research and all the materials I can get state that I cannot practically install Windows 8 after Ubuntu and get all the three OSs to run. Can you help?   If I know the Administrator account name and password on a Windows 7 computer, would it be possible to create an Office 2010 install CD that would "silently" install Office 2010 on a standard user account which does not have installation privileges. As in, the group policy "always install with elevated privileges" is in effect for the user. Some way to built the admin account privileges into the office installer? VBS Script? CMD? Understand, the laptops are in the field, the end user doesn't have the admin password and can't have the admin password. Thanks.
