• Consuming "Event Tracing for Windows" events

  An answer to this question has led me to look into using "Event Tracing for Windows" for our tracing needs. I have come across NTrace, which seems to be a good way to produce ETW events from C# code (using the XP-compatible "classic provider" model). However, I am unable to find an easy way to consume these events - to see them in real-time and/or log them to a file. The only way I have found is that described in the NTrace documentation: using a tool which is only available as part of the Windows DDK. In the case of a complex problem in the field, we may need to ask the user to produce a file containing a trace. We can't ask users to download the DDK or carry out a number of complex operations in order to do this. Is there a straightforward, user-friendly way to log ETW events to a file? Also, is it possible for someone to consume ETW events on Windows Vista/7 if they are not running as administrator?

  SHGetKnownFolderPath() and its cohorts accept one of the constants defined here (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd378457%28v=VS.85%29.aspx ), returning the path to a directory. I'm looking for one of these folders which is reliably writable by all users (including LocalSystem) on XP, Vista, and Windows 7... but I think I'm striking out. It appears that, in fact, there is no single location on the hard drive anymore where you can put a file and be assured that all users can write to it on all these OS versions, without fiddling the permissions first. Is this true?

• Win32: Is there a replacement GDI32.dll that uses hardware acceleration?

  Has anyone out there created a version of GDI32.dll that takes advantage of hardware acceleration available on the machine? gdiplus.dll? Starting with Windows Vista, GDI is no longer hardware accelerated. (GDI+ was never hardware accelerated). Without Microsoft fixing GDI (and GDI+) to be able to run well on the computer: native applications (C++ MFC, Delphi, etc), and managed WinForms applications, will continue to run poorly forever. While i could use Direct2D for business applications, i cannot control the fact that the development environment still creates controls, with decades of library support code, that assumes the presence of GDI.

• Install .NET 4.0 dll to the GAC

  I have a visual C# 2010 express install. Built a .NET 4.0 dll that is signed. Now I need to get it into the GAC. Im on 64bit vista. Anyone know if there is a gacutil supporting the 4.0 framework yet? Any other suggestions on getting it into the GAC? I have tried drag and drop into C:\Windows\assembly, whenever I do, it appears to copy; however, it is not copied and does not produce any error message. I cannot create a setup/deployment project as it appears the express editions of visual studios do not have the ability.

• Visual Studio Crashes when using Crystal Reports Group Editor

  I have a crystal report in my Visual Studio 2008 ASP.NET project, and when I choose "Group Expert" from the Crystal Reports - Report menu, Visual Studio crashes / hangs and I have to use Task Manager to close the program. This happens no matter how many times I try, and oddly enough it seems to work fine on another computer with the same project. Any help at all in the right direction would be greatly appreciated as I am pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. I am using Visual Studio 2008 SP1, SQL Server 2005 Developer SP2, Windows Vista Enterprise SP1, and the version of Crystal Reports that came with the Visual Studio installation.

• COM Add-in for Excel doesn't load when Excel is launched by opening file

  Several users have reported that if they launch Excel by double-clicking an Excel file, the add-in will not load. But, if they open Excel via the Start menu (or Quick launch toolbar) the add-in loads fine. Some details, in case they help: It is a COM add-in, written in VB6. The problem has been reported on Windows XP/Excel 2003 and Vista/Excel 2007 systems. The add-in implements IDTExtensibility2. The start mode is set to "Load on Startup". Any thoughts on the cause or how to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated.

• Error creating System.Type from string "System.Int32"

  On a web site I published (pre-compiled) last night, I get the following error. Before pre-compiling it, I was getting a compiler error that a User Control was not found. After compiling on another machine, and running, I get the following Parser error: "Cannot create an object of type 'System.Type' from its srting representation 'System.Int32' for the 'DataType' property" was the, now runtime, parser error I got. The offending tag is telerik:RadNumericTextBox .... DataType="System.Int32"... I emphasise again that this error only occurs on XP SP2, not on Vista and Win7. I'm off to do some Googling and issue logging at Telerik.

  I am trying to compile a program I took off a cd from a book that uses directx to render 3d objects. when i press compile I get the following error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'dxerr9.h': No such file or directory I am using VC++ 2008 Express Edition and i am running off of Vista. I went to the following folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Include and I was not able to find the header there. Unless I am looking in the wrong place. When I initially installed DX sdk I allowed the installer to put everything in a default location. I am not sure If I am looking in the right places or what.

Is it shipped with OS like XP, Vista, etc. I am using WPF application having TIFF image, which is having some issues ie the image is showing black with certain height; someone on the forum suggested that it might be the issue with WIC version 1. Can anybody please tell me how to find the Version of WIC. • cannot find vcvarsall.bat when runnning a pyhton script

  hello all, i am working on vista, and using python 2.6.4. i am using a software which uses a python script. but then i bumped into the message "cannot find vcvarsall.bat". so i installed visual c++ 2010. still the file is not found though it is there. my guess (a very uneducated one...) is that somewhere the path is wrong, because i also have an old visual 2008 (pretty empty) folder. since i have little idea in programming i have no idea where to make the changes for the new path. do i change something in the registery or in the script. i would be happy if somebody could help (preferably in lamen terms). thanx. • PerformanceCounters on .NET 4.0 & Windows 7

  I have a program that works fine on VS2008 and Vista, but I'm trying it on Windows 7 and VS2010 / .NET Framework 4.0 and it's not working. Ultimately the problem is that System.Diagnostics.PerformanceCounterCategory.GetCategories() (and other PerformanceCounterCategory methods) is not working. I'm getting a System.InvalidOperationException with the message "Cannot load Counter Name data because an invalid index '' was read from the registry." I can reproduce this with the very simple program shown below: class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { foreach (var pc in System.Diagnostics.PerformanceCounterCategory.GetCategories()) { Console.WriteLine(pc.CategoryName); } } } I did make sure I'm running the program as an admin. It doesn't matter if I run it with VS/Debugger attached or not. I don't have another machine with Windows 7 or VS2010 to test it on, so I'm not sure which is complicating things here (or both?). It is Windows 7 x64 and I've tried forcing the app to run in both x32 and x64 but get the same results.

• Deployment of SQL compact Edition (SDF files) using Setup project

  Hi, I have a C#.NET desktop application using SQL Compact edition as data store. The application should be used by any user on the machine and all should be seeing the same data ( data should not different per user). I am wondering where should I deploy the SDF file? User's Personal data folder (My Documents) means each user will have a separate database. Deploying on the same folder as the application causes vista to copy the file to \USers\Appdata\local\VirtualStore\ and it seems to make different copies for each user. Where is it best to deploy the SDF file to ensure all users are looking at the same data?

• Emacs - Error when calling (server-start)

  I am currently using GNU Emacs 23.0.93.1 in Windows Vista SP1. In my .emacs file I make a call to (server-start) and that is causing an error with the message The directory ~/.emacs.d/server is unsafe. • Unable to Push source code to Bzr/Bazaar

  I am having issues pushing my codes into my Bazaar repository. It worked earlier for my first commit but not it does not work at all. Everytime I try to push my codes, I get this exception Error while executing push [Error 5] Access is denied: 'c:\\users\\benjam~1.won\\appdata\\local\\temp\\tmpj2hcal.pag' Any idea how I resolve this? I have even deleted the repo and .git folder and tried again but I keep getting this error regardless of the branch I guess. • IP Address Lookup in VB.net (XP vs Windows 7)

  Currently I use the following code to retrieve the IP address of the local workstation... strIPAddress = System.Net.Dns.GetHostEntry(strComputerName).AddressList(0).ToString() This is fine for the Windows XP workstations. However, in Vista and Windows 7, this returns the IPv6 address which is not used at all. Is there a method of setting this to work so it always returns the IPv4 address regardless of platform? I know I can increment the AddressList value to 1 and get the correct IP in Windows 7. The bad part is that this requires going through the motions of identifying the OS and choosing one or the other. The must be some way of specifying IPv4 only. Perhaps getting a result from DNS on the network rather than the workstation itself?

  Hi, I have a legacy 32-bit application written in Borland's C++ Builder. I need to show specific pages from within a HtmlHelp file programmatically. Until now I've been doing this via HtmlHelp.ocx, but this does not work on x64 versions of Windows Vista / Windows7 as described in this thread. I can't compile the application as 64-bit executable. Therefore the only workaround I have found so far is to create a 32-bit component implementing a COM object which loads and calls into the 32-bit DLL, and exposes the 32-bit DLL interface as a COM interface. That sounds far too complicated just to display a chml file with a specific topic. There must be something else. But what is it?

  Hi, In my c# (2.0 framework) application I'm using notify Icon control. I want to show from this control a balloon tip. but the "showBalloonTip" event i slimite to a timeout and I want to show this balloon forever. I've tried to use a timer that will show the balloon again and again but in vista there is a fading effect for balloons and if it is not disabled every 25-30 seconds the balloon will fade in.   The page: How to Install PHP 5.2 on IIS 7and Windows Vista (and a few others) reference a mysterious php5isapi.dll which is not in the Windows install, or the zip files: php-5.3.2-Win32-VC9-x86.zip - VC9 x86 Thread Safe php-5.3.2-nts-Win32-VC9-x86.zip - VC9 x86 Non Thread Safe There was another post on stackoverflow that said it's obsolete and replaced by "fastapi" but no instructions mention this. I did find a php.dll in the zip file. Can I use that instead of php5isapi.dll? It's very frustrating trying to install basic PHP5 on Windows with MySQL.

• Debugging ADT Eclipse Plugin Install

  I've installed the Android SDK and the ADT plugin, but Android doesn't show up in the WindowPreferences... dialog. I'm running Galileo. If I go to the Installation Details part of the About Eclipse dialog, it says that I have 0.9.6 of Android DDMS and Android Development Tools. I can run adb from the command line. I tried going around the uninstall/reinstall loop once. I'm on Windows Vista. I also have 2.7.7 of the Scala plugin installed, but I tried uninstalling that. Any ideas on what I should try next?   I am writing an application which uses the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel assembly to export/import data from Excel spreadsheets. Everything was going fine (except for 1 based indexing and all those optional parameters!), until I tried to use conditional formatting. When I call Range.FormatConditions.Add I get a MissingMethodException telling me that no such method exists. This happens in both Vista and XP.   Hi On my development system, I have python 2.6, python 1.1 and GAE. I have three projects running on python 2.6 and django 1.1. And 1 project using GAE, Python 2.6 and django 1.1. I have heard that, my set-up for running GAE using python 2.6 may create some head scratching problems while deploying it on the production server, because GAE supports only python 2.5. And using 2.6 is not recommended. Can I develop GAE application using python 2.6? If not what should be the solution, I am using Window vista as my development system.

• which asp net hosting site allows to listen on differnt port than 80 and uses .net 4?

  i'm trying to take advantage of html 5 web sockets in .NET and the easiest way appears to do something like this guy does: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/webservices/c_sharp_web_socket_server.aspx?msg=3485900#xx3485900xx i've already tested this myself and it works great, but there are a few problems if i try to deploy this to my hosting site (discountasp.net). basically i am not allowed to open up a port on 8080 and listen on it. i then tried to figure out a way to listen non port 80 with IIS as well, but using the HTTPListener runs into sercurity issues as well that doesn't seem like will help since i can't mess with this stuff on the hosting site server either: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/169904/can-i-listen-on-a-port-using-httplistener-or-other-net-code-on-vista-without-r so to make my life easier, i think i need to find a hosting site that simply allows me to open up a socket on port 8080 and listen on it. anyone know of one? or anyone know of a workaround (besides sniffing ALL the traffic on port 80)?

• webbrowser disable script debugging in Visual Basic 6

  Hi, I want to disable script errors from popping up in a VB6 application. (I have VB6 installed on this machine). Currently, if I navigate to a particular page, it pops up saying "INternet Explorer Script Error: An error has ocurred in the script on this page" ... "Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?" Setting the webbrowser1.silent to 'true' does not work. Instead all that happens, is instead of displaying an error message, it starts up the actual 'script' debugger, and then exits the program. On a machine without the (visual studio) debugger, it still pops up a message asking to use the debugger, i.e., on Vista, (when silent is set to true). Manually changing the 'disable script debugging (other)' (and regular one), doesn't seem to working in MSIE (also testing version 6.0 for xp users). How do I disable script errors? • Project links in RAD Studio Welcome page do not work

  Hi, As you know, welcome page in RAD Studio shows a list of recent projects, and you can open each project by clicking on its name. My problem is that if the project is located somewhere My Documents folder, then the link in welcome page does not work! It works fine for projects which are located outside My Documents, but no links to anything inside My Documents work. It's been a while I am having this problem both in RAD Studio 2009 and RAD Studio 2010 on Windows Vista and Windows 7 (64-bit). I tried running the IDE as administrator to see if it works, but it didn't. I think it must be something related to IE security settings. Any idea? Thanks
