  This is for Excel: I've been tasked with counting distinct records after I have filtered the data. I have 330 rows with column A containing the 'name' and in Column B I have the name of a test that was done for each 'name', which each 'name' could have taken several iterations of the same test. The test results are in Column C. Col A -Student Col B -Exam Col C - Grade Student 1 Exam 1 .80 Student 2 Exam 1 .50 Student 3 Exam 1 .90 Student 2 Exam 1 .75 Student 4 Exam 1 .90 Student 5 Exam 1 .55 Student 2 Exam 2 .90 Student 1 Exam 2 .90 .... .... ... If I filter col B for Exam 1, I want to count the unique number of students that have taken Exam 1.

• Getting .NET schema for a stored procedure result

  I have a couple of stored procedures in T-SQL where each stored procedure has a fixed schema for the result set. I need to map the result sets for each procedure to a POCO object and need the column name and type for each column in the result set. Is there a quick way of accessing the information? The best way I have found so far is accessing each stored procedure from .NET and writing my own extension method on a IDataReader/IDataRecord for dumping the information (column names and types) out. Example, a stored procedure executing the following query: SELECT Id, IntField, NullableIntField, VarcharField, DateField FROM SomeTable would require me to have the mapping information: Id - Guid IntField - System.Int32 NullableIntField - Nullable<System.Int32> VarcharField - String DateField - DateTime

  I have two tables. Table A has an id column. Table B has an Aid column and a type column. Example data: A: id -- 1 2 B: Aid | type ----+----- 1 | 1 1 | 1 1 | 3 1 | 1 1 | 4 1 | 5 1 | 4 2 | 2 2 | 4 2 | 3 I want to get all the IDs from table A where there is a certain amount of type 1 and type 3 actions. My query looks like this: SELECT id FROM A WHERE (SELECT COUNT(type) FROM B WHERE B.Aid = A.id AND B.type = 1) = 3 AND (SELECT COUNT(type) FROM B WHERE B.Aid = A.id AND B.type = 3) = 1 so on the data above, just the id 1 should be returned. Can I combine the 2 subqueries somehow?

• Which type of Rails model association should I use in this situation?

  I have two models/tables in my Rails application: discussions and comments. Each discussion has_many comments, and each comment belongs_to a discussion. My discussions table also includes a first_comment_id column and last_comment_id column for convenience and speed. I want to be able to call discussion.last_comment for the last comment model, but the following (in my discussion model) isn't working to make this happen: has_one :first_comment, :class_name => "Comment" has_one :last_comment, :class_name => "Comment" When I call discussion.last_comment, the following SQL is run: SELECT * FROM `comments` WHERE (`comments`.discussion_id = 1) LIMIT 1 It's using the discussions.id column to join against comments.discussion_id, when I want it to join discussions.last_comment_id against comments.id. Am I using the wrong type of association here? Thanks for your help!

  Hi, in my SQL2008 I have a user which is in the "db_datareader", "db_datawriter" and "db_ddladmin" DB roles, however when he tries to modify a table with SSMS he receives a message saying: You are not logged in as the database owner or system administrator. You might not be able to save changes to tables that you do not own. Of course, I would like to avoid such message, but until now I did find the way... Therefore, I try to modify the user by adding him to the "db_owner" role, and of course I do not have the message above. My question is: Is it possible to keep the user in the "db_owner" role, but deny some actions like alter user or ? I try "alter any user" securable on DB level, but it does not work... THANKS!

• Storing HTML in MySQL using Java

  Hello there again, So, I'm working on a project now where I should store webpages inside a database, I'm using crawler4j to crawl and Proxool along with MySQL Java Connector to connect to my database. When I tested the application I got: com.mysql.jdbc.MysqlDataTruncation: Data truncation: Data too long for column 'HTMLData'. The HTMLData column wasTEXT. When I changed the HTMLData column to LONGTEXT the error was gone, but I'm afraid it might get back in the future. Any idea on how to do that perfectly so I don't worry about that error (or any other similar error) in the future? Thanks :)

• MySQL User AutoIncrement Permissions Restriction

  I have two databases that need to have their auto increment ids on various tables synced. Right now, I have a PHP function that checks the current auto increment id for both tables and then sets the lowest to the highest. If there is a better way to do this, I'm all ears. I really don't want to give the web user alter permissions, as a SQL injection could clear all passwords (or something else silly). Is there any way to restrict a MySQL user to changing auto increment without opening it up to alter statements?

• Equal height divs with footer always at bottom of tallest div

  I was wondering if this were possible, and if it is the best way to go about this: example image (since I'm not allowed to post pics yet ^^) So, not only does each column have to be of equal height, but each column also has its own individual footer. I saw this post httx://stackoverflow.com/questions/1347366/div-at-bottom-of-window-and-adaptable-height-div (I also can't post more than one link....) - how could I rework this technique to apply to the bottom of the divs and not the bottom of the window? *edit - each column will have content that will constantly change and be of variable height. I'm thinking I could just figure out the equal height columns first, then just absolute position a footer div within those columns. Does its parent div then have to be position: relative?

• Is INT the correct datatype for ABS(CHECKSUM(NEWID()))?

  I'm in the process of creating unique customers ID's that is an alternative Id for external use. In the process of adding a new column "cust_uid" with datatype INT for my unique ID's, When I do an INSERT into this new column: Insert Into Customers(cust_uid) Select ABS(CHECKSUM(NEWID())) I get a error: Could not create an acceptable cursor. OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "SHQ2IIS1" returned message "Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done. I've check all data types on both tables and the only things that has changed is the new column in both tables. The update is being done on one Big @$$ table...and for reasons above my pay grade, we would like to have new uid's that are different form the one's that we currently have "so users don't know how many accounts we actually have." Is INT the correct datatype for ABS(CHECKSUM(NEWID())) ?

  In my SQL Server 2005 server I create databases and logins using Management Studio. My application requires that I give a newly created user read and write permissions to another database. To do this I right-click the newly created login, select properties and go to User Mapping. I put a check beside the database to map this login to the db and select db_datareader and db_datawriter as the roles to map. Can this be done programmatically? I've read about using Alter User and sp_change_users_login but I'm having problems getting these to work, since sp_change_users_login has been deprecated so I'd prefer to use Alter User. Please note my understanding of SQL Server database users/logins/roles is basic

• Real-world examples of populating a GWT CellTable using a clean MVP pattern?

  We are using the GWT-Presenter framework and attempting to use CellTable to put together an updateable grid. It seems as though several of the GWT constructs for CellTable don't lend themselves to easily breaking up the logic into clean view and presenter code. Examples: 1) Within the View's constructor, the CellTable is defined and each column is created by anonymous inner classes that extend the Column class to provide the onValue() method. 2) The FieldUpdater interface must be implemented to provide logic to execute when a user alters data in a cell. This seems like it would best fit in the Presenter's onBind() method, but FieldUpdaters often need access to the Cell or Column which belong in the view. CellTable does not have accessor methods to get hold of the Columns or Cells, so it seems the only way for the Presenter to get them is for me to create a multitude of member variables on the View and accessors on my Display interface. Can anyone provide good examples for dealing with CellTable in GWT-Presenter or a comparable MVP

  I turned snapshot isolation on in my database using the following code ALTER DATABASE MyDatabase SET ALLOW_SNAPSHOT_ISOLATION ON ALTER DATABASE MyDatabase SET READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT ON and got rid off lots of deadlocks. But my database still produces deadlocks, when I need to run a script every hour to clean up 100,000+ rows. Is there a way I can avoid deadlocks in my cleanup script, do I need to set ROWLOCK specifically in that query? Is there a way to increase the number of row level locks that a database uses? How are locks promoted? From row level to page level to table level? My delete script is rather simple: delete statvalue from statValue, (select dateadd(minute,-60, getdate()) as cutoff_date) cd where temporaryStat = 1 and entrydate < cutoff_date Right now I am looking for quick solution, but a long term solution would be even nicer. • How to organise a many to many relationship in MongoDB

  I have two tables/collections; Users and Groups. A user can be a member of any number of groups and a user can also be an owner of any number of groups. In a relational database I'd probably have a third table called UserGroups with a UserID column, a GroupID column and an IsOwner column. I'm using MongoDB and I'm sure there is a different approach for this kind of relationship in a document database. Should I embed the list of groups and groups-as-owner inside the Users table as two arrays of ObjectIDs? Should I also store the list of members and owners in the Groups table as two arrays, effectively mirroring the relationship causing a duplication of relationship information? Or is a bridging UserGroups table a legitimate concept in document databases for many to many relationships? Thanks

I've tried using except and intersect to compare subsets of first table with the second table, which works fine, but it takes too long on the intersect part and I can't figure out why (the first table has about 10.000 records and the second has around 10).   Hello, The question Is it possible to ask SSIS to cast a value and return NULL in case the cast is not allowed instead of throwing an error ? My environment I'm using Visual Studio 2005 and Sql Server 2005 on Windows Server 2003. The general context Just in case you're curious, here is my use case. I have to store data coming from somewhere in a generic table (key/value structure with history) witch contains some sort of value that can be strings, numbers or dates. The structure is something like this : table Values { Id int, Date datetime, -- for history Key nvarchar(50) not null, Value nvarchar(50), DateValue datetime, NumberValue numeric(19,9) } I want to put the raw value in the Value column and try to put the same value in the DateValue column when i'm able to cast it to Datetime in the NumberValue column when i'm able to cast it to a number Those two typed columns would make all sort of aggregation and manipulation much easier and faster later.   Hi! I'm using winforms. I spend a lot of time drawing forms (maybe not a lot, but it is a boring task). To sum up... I want to develop a simple aplication that connect to a sql server database, let the user to select a table, and put the controls in a form for me (generate the designer code), based on the tipe of each column. Then my app will name each control like the column of the table, set the maxlengh property (if the type is varchar), and create a label with the same text near the control. If the column is a FK, then the app will draw a combobox and so on. I saw that Telerik Open ORM make something like this, but I only need a simple app for the IU Generation. If the same day I finish my little application I discover a tool that make the same... I will feel myself stupid :D Are there any tool out there that do this work for me? Thanks
