  Hi guys, this is my second review of these controls, and it will be quite different than the first. A few months ago I was engaged by a client to develop a web based application. He asked me (I guess they all ask the same) to make it good looking and attractive. The first thing I thought of when I heard this was "I must renew my DXperience subscription". And now I am glad I did that. Before I continue, I would like to say something to those readers who are totally new to DXperience. Guys, we all know that one of the more frustrating things for the ASP.NET developers is designing the good looking application. Well folks, your troubles are over! • Should Scala IDE Worksheets be part of your open git repository?

  Those familiar with Scala IDE will know about the great testing environment offered by the Scala Worksheet. You can scribble and scratch, much like in the REPL, but with all the goodness added by the IDE as a whole (refactoring, saving, error checking, etc). When you create a worksheet, it is created with the .sc extension, and also creates a artifact under a hidden directory called .worksheet. This is all fine and dandy, but should one include these in your public .git repositories? People who does not use Scala IDE (or older versions) may find these files confusing. On the other hand, making some of your experiments public to developers who are using Scala IDE, may give them a quick start into experimenting and learning the project.

  Ubuntu 12.10 beta 2 has awfull 3d performance and Video Tearing do something about this. Tearing is common issue on linux and makes linux sucks. Ubuntu also is bloated and uses compiz , i hope ubuntu developers should be more serious cause even a noob should know that compiz sucks now. I have no screen tearing and full opengl 3d performance on cinnamon ! And thats why i like linux mint 13. Ubuntu is so slow applications launching time is bigger compared to linux mint or xubuntu and many many times slower compared to arch linux. I was sattisfied before the 12.04 version now i'm just dissapointed..... (downvoters are simply noobs or silly fanboys and they deserve ubuntu)

• How does sprite customization in 2D games work?

  I´m working on the design of a new game concept at the moment and I would like to know how to handle a customization of sprites. (In 2D that is, hence the topic.) This is my scenario: The player will have a tower containing 3 floors (or more). Each floor can be replaced by another "piece", i.e. a blue floor, a fire floor, a stone floor. With the little knowledge of game development I have, creating a sprite for each possible combination is probably not a good idea, since the size of the game file will be HUGE. So, how does developers solve this? Do you put a standard position and just replace the sprite itself? Any advice or information about this would be great. Regards.

We are currently using the Ext 4.0 framework but there are questions being raised that it may not be the right framework to use. I like what Ext has to offer (rich GUIs, data package and class system) are there other frameworks out there that are similar? Are there frameworks out there tailored to medium/large software companies? Info: Potentially 100's of developers converting thick client screens to the web. But it looks like in Agile cross-functionality means not only combining different specialists, but making them mix.   Currently I work as a .NET C# programmer, quite fresh faced at that (only been working professionally for 8 months) I'm enjoying what I'm doing, but I'm now thinking ahead for other languages to learn. I've heard from quite a few seasoned developers that they reckon it's worth getting in to HTML5. Before I asked this question I read a few of the other questions similar to this, but most were dated back a few years. I'm wondering what your advice would be to an aspiring programmer, what I should avoid going for (i.e. as I understand it Flash is essentially going to be phased out due to HTML5) I was looking in to WPF and the more updated .NET technologies, but someone advised me that WPF stuff will probably be redundant in the future. • How do you ensure consistent experience across multiple graphics cards (or even driver versions)?

  So I was writing a simple 2D game with OpenGL and SDL and had this problem when there was awful tearing when running in windowed mode (even though I explicitly asked SDL_SetVideoMode to use double buffering). Didn't worry about it all too much because most of the time the game grabs the entire screen, windowed mode is just for debugging. Anyway, yesterday I updated my nVidia drivers and tearing disappeared, the game runs smooth and looks nice in windowed mode too. I can see how the problem may be in the graphics driver, but this leads to a question. Obviously, professional game developers have to deal with a lot of different hardware/software configurations. What are the techniques they use to make sure the game looks the roughly the same on different graphics cards or even the same model of graphics card, but with different driver versions?

• Improve Bad testing

  We have a large team of developers and testers. The ratio is one tester for every one developer. We have full bug tracking and reporting systems in place. We have test plans in place. Every change to the product, the testing team is involved in the design of the feature and are included in the development process as much as possible. We build in small iterative blocks, using scrum methodology and every scrum they are included in, including the grooming sessions etc. But every release of the product, they miss even the most simple and obvious defects. How can we improve this?

  Update: We are a very small team (3 people) and thus I (SM) and the PO are also developers doing some coding. We are aware of this situation and we are actively trying to recruit some new talents. But it's hard! Meanwhile... we need to adapt... so my question: The PO complains about having too much outside noise (mainly stakeholders feature requests), and he can't focus on the sprint realisation. We agree that we should try to educate people on our process implications (sprint durations and product backlog), to reduce the noise. But as a ScrumMaster, how am I supposed to shield a PO from outside? Isn't he supposed to be in contact with the management and business? Also, if people outside don't want to waste too much time learning agile, what is the best way to educate them?

• What tool do you use to create SVGT icons for your app?

  This is a question mainly for Symbian developers. I would like to create some demo apps to put on my mobile phone and have some kind of nice icon on the application grid. If I've understood correctly, the application grid icon needs to be in SVG Tiny format. The problem is I don't have any toolset to create such a format. There don't seem to be any free tools to edit or convert to SVG Tiny format. The cheapest option around seems to be e-Picture Pro for $169. Inkscape has had some initiative to make it SVGT-compliant, but not much seems to be happening there lately. So the question in short is how do you create your icons for your Symbian apps (or other uses that require SVG Tiny)?

• Is there any hard data on the (dis-)advantages of working from home?

  Is there any hard data (studies, comparisons, not-just-gut-feel analysis) on the advantages and disadvantages of working from home? My devs asked about e.g. working from home one day per week, the boss doesn't like it for various reasons, some of which I agree with but I think they don't necessarily apply in this case. We have real offices (2..3 people each), distractions are still common. IMO it would be beneficial for focus, and with 1 day / week, there wouldn't be much loss at interaction and communication. In addition it would be a great perk, and saving the commute. Related: Pros and Cons of working Remotely/from Home (interesting points, but no hard facts) [edit] Thanks for all the feedback! To clarify: it's not my decision to make, I agree that there are pro's and con's depending on circumstances, and we are pushing for "just try it". I've asked this specific question because (a) facts are a good addition to thoughts in arguing with an engineer boss, and (b) we, as developers, should build upon facts like every respectable trade.
