• VB.NET logical expression evaluator

  I need to test a logical expression held in a string to see if it evaluate to TRUE or FALSE.(the strig is built dynamically) For example the resulting string may contain "'dog'<'cat' OR (14 AND 4<6)". There are no variables in the string, it will logically evaluate. It will only contain simple operators = < < = <= and AND , OR and Open and Close Brackets, string constants and numbers. (converted to correct syntax && || etc.) I currently acheive this by creating a jscipt function and compiling it into a .dll.   This is psesudo code. In what programming language this is possible ? def lab(input) input = ['90'] end x = ['80'] lab(x) puts x #=> value of x has changed from ['80'] to ['90] I have written this in ruby but in ruby I get the final x value of 80 because ruby is pass-by-reference. However what is passed is the reference to the data held by x and not pointer to x itself same is true in JavaScript. So I am wondering if there is any programming language where the following is true.

• Implementing a 24 queue using MSMQ and WCF

  I am shortly starting a project, which requires messages to be held in a queue for a period of 24 hours, this is because the database can't have any updates at certain times of the month. The service also has to be hosted on windows server 2003, which means it will have to be a windows service. It is also required that the service use WCF so that in 12 months time when we move over to windows server 2008, the service can hosted in iis 7. At present I am wondering if MSMQ is the best way to handle this. I've been looking into topics like poison message handling & dead letter queues, but nothing that really covers what I am intending to actually do. Could anyone recommend a sample or a tutorial for this ? Thanks in advance

• lwjgl isKeyDown canceling out other keys

  While trying to create a simple game where a square is manipulated via the keyboard keys, I have come across a small, rather irritating problem. I would like it to work so that when the opposite directional key is pressed, the character will stop; the character may move the other two directions while stopped in this situation. This works perfectly with LEFT and RIGHT held down; the player may move UP or DOWN. • Forcibly clear memory in java

  I am writing an application in java that I care about being secure. After encrypting a byte array, I want to forcibly remove from memory anything potentially dangerous such as the key used. In the following snippet key is a byte[], as is data. SecretKeySpec secretKeySpec = new SecretKeySpec(key, "AES"); Cipher cipher = Cipher.getInstance("AES"); cipher.init(Cipher.ENCRYPT_MODE, secretKeySpec); byte[] encData = cipher.doFinal(data, 0, data.length); Arrays.fill(key, (byte)0); As far as I understand, the last line above overwrites the key with 0s so that it no longer contains any dangerous data, but I can't find a way to overwrite or evict secretKeySpec or cipher similarly. Is there any way to forcibly overwrite the memory held by secretKeySpec and cipher, so that if someone were to be able to view the current memory state (say, via a cold boot attack), they would not get access to this information?

• Is there anything wrong with a class with all static methods?

  I'm doing code review and came across a class that uses all static methods. The entrance method takes several arguments and then starts calling the other static methods passing along all or some of the arguments the entrance method received. It isn't like a Math class with largely unrelated utility functions. In my own normal programming, I rarely write methods where Resharper pops and says "this could be a static method", when I do, they tend to be mindless utility methods. Is there anything wrong with this pattern? Is this just a matter of personal choice if the state of a class is held in fields and properties or passed around amongst static methods using arguments?

  While coding JavaScript sometimes you store the reference of object this in a local variable for different purposes (to set proper scope, to help code obfuscators, etc.). There are coders who prefer aliasing this to that to make it obvious its intention. Other guys use self since it's pointing to the object itself. I even saw source codes where me held the reference and it still makes sense. Certainly there are other ones. Which one should I prefer? Is there a convention on which to use or is it only the matter of taste.

• Are spinlocks a good choice for a memory allocator?

  I've suggested to the maintainers of the D programming language runtime a few times that the memory allocator/garbage collector should use spinlocks instead of regular OS critical sections. This hasn't really caught on. Here are the reasons I think spinlocks would be better: At least in synthetic benchmarks that I did, it's several times faster than OS critical sections when there's contention for the memory allocator/GC lock. Edit: Empirically, using spinlocks didn't even have measurable overhead in a single-core environment, probably because locks need to be held for such a short period of time in a memory allocator. Memory allocations and similar operations usually take a small fraction of a timeslice, and even a small fraction of the time a context switch takes, making it silly to context switch in the case of contention. A garbage collection in the implementation in question stops the world anyhow. There won't be any spinning during a collection. Are there any good reasons not to use spinlocks in a memory allocator/garbage collector implementation?

• Git svn - no changes, no branches (except master), rebase/info is not working

  I know that similar questions were asked before, but I think my is a little bit different, so please don't point me to existing threads. I'm migrating our old svn repo to git. I did git svn clone path --authors-file abc.txt and everything seemend legit to me. Then I did git remote add origin xyz and git push --all origin and it also worked. I created this repo as test one, with only me having access to both local repo and origin. No changes were made in project held on this repo, nothing to commit, no pushing and so on. There is also only one branch, because someone initialized svn years ago without creating proper folder structure (branches, trunk, tags). Meanwhile someone pushed their work to svn, so I tried to git svn fetch (which worked), and git svn rebase which didn't, giving me error: Unable to determine upstream SVN information from working tree history Is there any reason why git svn decided to stop working?

• [iOS] How to catch cancallation of UIScrollView or others?

  Sometimes, interruptions such as phone call occur and disturb a regular behavior of an app in iPhone or iPad. For example, I created one UIScrollView instance and implemented UIScrollView delegate methods: scrollViewWillBeginDragging and scrollViewDidEndDragging(and scrollViewDidEndDecelerating). A scrollViewWillBeginDragging method deactivated all custom buttons in my app. Then scrollViewDidEndDragging and scrollViewDidEndDecelerating methods activated these custom buttons. That is, while the user scrolled, all custom buttons became deactivated for a while. The problem was that while the user started to drag and just held an UIScrollView instance, if I took a screenshot by pressing a home button and a power button, then any of scrollViewDidEndDragging and scrollViewDidEndDecelerating didn't get called. So the app became messed up. I implemented a UIApplicationWillResignActiveNotification method in my UIViewController, but it didn't get called after taking a screenshot. How can I catch any kind of interruption that disturbs a regular flow of events? Sometimes, touchesEnd and touchesCanceled didn't get called too due to an interruption. Thank you.

• list(of byte) to Picturebox

  I have a jpeg file that is being held as a list(of Byte) Currently I have code that I can use to load and save the jpeg file as either a binary (.jpeg) or a csv of bytes (asadsda.csv). I would like to be able to take the list(of Byte) and convert it directly to a Picturebox without saving it to disk and then loading it to the picturebox. If you are curious, the reason I get the picture file as a list of bytes is because it gets transfered over serial via an industrial byte oriented protocol as just a bunch of bytes. I am using VB.net, but C# example is fine too.

• C/C++ detect network type

  I need to write a win32 c/c++ application which will be able to determine whether the PC it's running on is connected to one of 2 networks. The first network is the company LAN (which has no internet connection) and the second network is a standalone switch with a single PC connected to it (the PC that the program is running on). I'm pretty new to network programming but so far I have tried testing to see if a network drive which is held on our LAN can be mapped. This works fine if the PC is connected to the LAN, the drive mapping succeeds so so LAN detection is successful. However, if the PC is connected to the switch, this results in a VERY long timeout which is not a suitable as it will delay the program so much as to make it unusable. Does anyone have any alternative suggestions? I'm using c/c++ in VS 6.0

  Newb question: how do i show a from that have been hidden using this.Hide(); I have tried MainMenuForm.Show(); and this just says i need an object ref have tried: MainMenuForm frmMainMenu = new MainMenuForm(); frmMainMenu.Show(); which seems to show the appropriate form. but when you exit the app, it is still held in memory because it hasn't shown the form that was hidden, instead it has shown a new version of the form. in effect having 2 instances of the form (one hidden, one visible). whats the correct procedure here Thanks in advance

  Hi everybody, How do you use a php variable (array) inside a mysql select statement? I am designing an auction site and currently working on a page that lets people view a list of all the current bids for an item. I want to display 3 columns: amountbid - the amount each bidder has bid for the item (held in tblbid) bidderid - the id of each bidder who has bid (found in tbluser) total_positivity_feedback - how many users have left positive feedback for the bidder (calculated from tblfeedback) To find the 'amount' and the 'bidderid' columns i pass the essayid URL parameter from the previous page. This works fine. Despite this, i can't display the total_positivity_feedback column for the various users who have made each bid. My mysql query looks like this: select tblbid.bidderid, tblbid.amount, (select count(tblfeedback.feedbackid) from tblfeedback WHERE tblfeedback.writerid = "ARRAY VARIABLE GOES HERE") AS total_positivity_feedback FROM tblbid WHERE tblbid.essayid = $essayid_bids I assume that the only way to accomplish this is to make the variable contain the bidderid's of those people who bid for that particular essay? • Graphics Question: How do I restrict the mouse cursor to within a circle?

  I'm playing with XNA. When I click the left mouse button, I record the X,Y co-ordinates. Keeping the mouse button held down, moving the mouse draws a line from this origin to the current mouse position. I've offset this into the middle of the window. Now, what I'd like to do is restrict the mouse cursor to within a circle (with a radius of N, centred on the middle of the screen). Restricting the mouse to a rectangular region is easy enough (by adjusting the origin by the difference of the mouse position and the size of the region), but I haven't a clue on how to start doing it for a circular region. Can anyone explain how to do this? Any advice on where to start would be helpful.

• Choose Your Own Adventure : BASIC Programming

  Hopefully this isn't considered too off-topic, but I guess we'll see. I'd love to find and frame a copy of this book. Years ago, in my pre-teen years, I remember reading a lot of CYOA books, and one in particular stands out in my mind as the book that started me down the path of becoming a programmer. The details are fuzzy, but what I remember was that the story involved a programmer who was held captive somewhere and was trying to escape. IIRC, each section or chapter had a short BASIC program you could could type into your computer to simulate something from the story. The one that stands out most in my mind was a very simplistic animation made with pipes, pluses, and dashes that "looked" like a metal grate that opened (sliding upward). I realize this is pretty scant information to go on, but I suspect that anyone else who read the book would immediately remember it. Maybe not, I guess we'll see. Again, my apologies if this is too far off-topic for S.O.

• Do you have to call .Save() when modifying a application setting that is bound to a control property

  I am programming in .NET I have an application setting of type string. On my form I have a textbox. I bound the text property of the textbox to my application setting. If I type something in the textbox it changes the value that is held in the Application setting but the next time I start the program it goes back to the default value. Do I need to call Properties.Settings.Default.Save(); after the text is entered for the new value to be saved? Shouldn't it do this automatically? Is there a way I can make it do it automatically?

• Read external HTML page and then find data within

  I'm playing around with an idea, and I'm stuck at this one part. I want to read an external HTML page and then extract the data held within two <dd> tags. I've been using file_get_contents with good results, but I'm at a loss as to how to accomplish that last part. The two tags I want to extract the value from are always enclosed within a particular <div>, was wondering if that might help? In my mind it reads the entire html file into a string, then dumps all the data up until this one particular <div>, and dumps all the data after the closing </div>. Is that possible? I think this needs regex syntax which I've never used yet. So any tips, links, or examples would be great! I can provide more info as necessary.

• How to subscribe to the free Oracle Linux errata yum repositories

  Now that updates and errata for Oracle Linux are available for free (both as in beer and freedom), here's a quick HOWTO on how to subscribe your Oracle Linux system to the newly added yum repositories on our public yum server, assuming that you just installed Oracle Linux from scratch, e.g. by using the installation media (ISO images) available from the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud You need to download the appropriate yum repository configuration file from the public yum server and install it in the yum repository directory. • Open Data, Government and Transparency

  A new track at TDC (The Developer's Conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil) is titled Open Data. It deals with open data, government and transparency. Saturday will be a "transparency hacker day" where developers are invited to create applications using open data from the Brazilian government.  Alexandre Gomes, co-lead of the track, says "I want to inspire developers to become "Civic hackers:" developers who create apps to make society better." It is a chance for developers to do well and do good. There are many opportunities for developers, including monitoring government expenditures and getting citizens involved via social networks. The open data movement is growing worldwide. One initiative, the Open Government Partnership, is working to make government data easier to find and access. Making this data easily available means that with the right applications, it will be easier for people to make decisions and suggestions about government policies based on detailed information. Last April, the Open Government Partnership held its annual meeting in Brasilia, the capitol of Brazil. It was a great success showcasing the innovative work being done in open data by governments, civil societies and individuals around the world. For example, Bulgaria now publishes daily data on budget spending for all public institutions. Alexandre Gomes Explains Open Data At TDC, the Open Data track will include a presentation of examples of successful open data projects, an introduction to the semantic web, how to handle big data sets, techniques of data visualization, and how to design APIs.The other track lead is Christian Moryah Miranda, a systems analyst for the Brazilian Government's Ministry of Planning. "The Brazilian government wholeheartedly supports this effort. In order to make our data available to the public, it forces us to be more consistent with our data across ministries, and that's a good step forward for us," he said. He explained the government knows they cannot achieve everything they would like without help from the public. "It is not the government versus the people, rather citizens are partners with the government, and together we can achieve great things!" Miranda exclaimed. Saturday at TDC will be a "transparency hacker day" where developers will be invited to create applications using open data from the Brazilian government. Attendees are invited to pitch their ideas, work in small groups, and present their project at the end of the conference. "For example," Gomes said, "the Brazilian government just released the salaries of all government employees and I can't wait to see what developers can do with that." • Ask the Readers: Do You Prefer Computers, Game Consoles, or Other Devices for Your Gaming Needs?

  Nearly everyone who has access to a computer will play games on it at some point, but many people also use a separate game platform as well. What we would like to know this week is if you prefer using a computer, game consoles, or other devices for your gaming needs. Photo of Faith and Kate Connors from Mirror’s Edge by Tamahikari Tammas. Video games are a perfect way to relax and have fun at home (or at work if you can sneak in some game time!). The increasing variety of devices available with each passing year are making it easier to have access to a gaming platform to suit your needs or “darkest gaming desires”. For many people their computers are the perfect platform…they can play Flash-based games in their browsers, use the default set of games that come with their system, and install any extras that catch their eyes. The added benefit is that when game time is over they can drop right into their browsing, e-mail, personal projects, or work without having to switch hardware. The convenience of the “all-in-one” platform is certainly appealing! Perhaps you prefer to use your computer for other activities outside of gaming and own one or more separate game consoles. You might have chosen an Xbox, Playstation, or Nintendo for example. Maybe a hand-held is preferable for its’ size and portability. Then there are mobile phones and the iPad… With so many options it may feel hard to choose the right platform(s) without a good bit of research regarding display, availability of games for a particular platform, how long before the platform starts to become “obsolete”, etc. What we would like to know this week is which gaming platform you prefer. Is there only one that you choose to use or do you use multiple platforms for gaming? Is there a particular reason such as convenience for your choices? You may even be keeping an older platform around just for a certain game (or games) made for it. Are there any recommendations or advice that you would like to share with your fellow readers?
