• Nvidia GTS 360M in Asus laptop shuts off when gaming on external display

  I have had this problem on my Asus G51j Intel I5, Nvidia GTS360M graphics card. Just updated the drivers to latest off Nvidias site. Most games I play, If I hook it up through an external monitor(this happens whether it's HDMI or VGA). The laptop hard shuts down after about 20 minutes, give or take. This tends to happen on more graphically intense games like Call of dutys, bioshock. I'm running Windows 7, latest nvidia drivers. Games work fine on my laptops screen, and Movies, general computing work fine on the external displays. The laptop always sits on a cooling pad and the latest time was in front of my AC unit, I ran heatfan or whatever the heat tracking software was, and my temperatures were normal through a shut down. This has been happening for the life of the laptop. I dont play very many games, and even fewer on an external monitor, so this issue doesnt come up much Is it possible I have a faulty graphics card? Is there anything else I can try?

• Opera 10.5 RAM usage and Google Reader?

  Hi all, Today I upgraded to Opera 10.5 from Google Chrome and I have two really important questions about it. 1) Is it normal for it to use SO MUCH RAM!!!!? Closing tabs doesn't help, but opening new ones add on to the usage. I can have just 4 tabs open and it goes up to the 300MB mark and I only have 1.5GB in my laptop, 596MB of it used by the graphics card so this really unacceptable. Is there a way to fix it? 2) Why does Google Reader feel so slow and unresponsive on it? It lags so bad when I just try scrolling through the page. I know Opera is known for being really smooth while scrolling through pages. There's also a white bar at the bottom of the page that I can get rid of. It blocks the "Next" and "Previous" buttons. The test between articles is also sort of intersecting each other and that just looks completely unattractive and that's something i'm not used with any web browser. I realize there's a built-in RSS reader, but it doesn't sync across multiple computers and is very late at updating. • How to let hard drive sleep in RAID1 configuration?

  Normally in Windows 7 a hard drive stops spinning when it is not used for a longer while. This can be configured in Windows and I use it on computers which are turned on 24/7 but not used much often. My problem is on a computer with Intel X79 chipset with an integrated RAID controller. There is Windows 7 installed on an SSD drive, and there is RAID1 array with two SATA HDD drives for data. Those SATA drives aren't used much so I'd like to let them sleep (i.e stop spinning). But they ignore settings in Windows. How to let them sleep when using RAID1? It seems to me that those drives are "unstoppable", they are spinning 24/7 even when they aren't used at all. Maybe they would behave normally if I used Windows-based software RAID, but I use hardware RAID controller. Is there a way to let them stop spinning and sleep after for example 3 or 5 hours of inactivity (i.e. the same way as they would behave in Windows without RAID)?

• Getting the most out of a Mac mini as a media center

  Hello! I own an old Mac mini from 2006 (maybe early 2007). It's got an Intel Core Solo 32-bits CPU and 512 MB RAM. 160 GB HDD. The GPU is an integrated chip… Currently, my Mini is sitting under my LCD TV (720p). It's plugged in via a DVI to HDMI cable. It's currently running Leopard. And unfortunately, Snow Leopard can't be installed on a device with less than 1 GB of RAM… So, my Mac mini isn't exactly powerful. Also, it's slow and Mac OS X is not a pleasant experience on my Mini right now. It feels slow and heavy. I want to use my Mac mini as a media center/player. I want to be able to play video files in 720p (H.264, Matroska/MOV files). So basically, playing high-def videos is all I want to do with my Mini. What OS should I install? Stick to OS X? Optimize for video playback? Or should I install another OS — like Win XP, Ubuntu or any other Linux dist? Then, will my Mini be able to play 720p videos smoothly, even though the CPU and GPU aren't that powerful and with the limit of 512 MB of RAM? Appreciate all help. Thanks in advance!

• Looking for a short term solution to improve website performance with additional server

  I am working with a small team to run an internal website running with PHP 5.3.9, MySQL 5.0.77. All the files and database are hosted on a dedicated Linux machine with the following configuration: Intel Xeon E5450 8 CPU cores @3.00GHz, 2992.498 MHz, Cache 6148 KB, Cent OS – Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.4 We started small and then the database got bigger and now the website performance degraded significantly. We often get server space overrun, mysql overloaded with too many calls, etc. We don't have much experience dealing with these issues. We recently got another server that we were thinking to use to improve performance. Since it has better configuration, some of us wanted to completely move everything to the new machine. But I am trying to find out how we can utilize both machine for optimized performance. I found options such as MySQL clustering, Load balancer, etc. I was wondering if I could get any suggestion for this situation "How to utilize two machines in short term for best performance", that would be great. By short term we are looking for something that we can deploy in a month or so. Thanks in advance for your time.

• Overclock Failed

  This morning when I tried to turn on my computer, the monitor would not display anything. The computer is on, but no UI on the monitor and no beep. I turned off the computer and turn it back on again. This time, the computer was on for about 2 seconds and automatically turned itself off for about 2 second and automatically turned itself back on. This happened two times without the monitor displaying any UI. On the third try, the computer did the same thing but when it turned itself back on, the monitor displayed this: American Megatrends Asus P8P67 Le ACPI bios Revision 1011 CPU Intel Core i5 2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz Speed: 3300MHz Total Memory 4096 MB (DDR3-1333) USB Devices Total: 0 Drive, 1 Keyboard, 1 Mouse, 2 Hubs Detected ATA/ATAPI Deivces SATA6G_2 Hitachi HDs821010CLA 332 SATA3G_1 Corsair force 3 SSD SATA3G_2 HL-DT-ST DB-RE UH12CS28 Overclocking Failed! Please enter setup to reconfigure your system. Press F1 to Run Setup. After I pressed F1, it went into the Asus EF1 Bios Utility. I couldn't do anything in there so I just exited. After which, the computer auto turned off and on again and I was able to use the PC like regular. This has never happened to this computer before and the day before, nothing seemed wrong, just regular use and some gaming.

• With Ubuntu 9.10, my DVD keeps spinning up

  I have Ubuntu 9.10 on my Intel Mac Mini. When there's a DVD in the drive, and even if there's no program open at all (just looking at the desktop), every minute or so the disc spins up with a loud whirring noise, and I can hear it cranking the motor to seek across the disc. How do I find out what's causing this? And how can I make it stop? Thanks! EDIT: I straced nautilus, and saw nothing it's doing directly, even when the disc spins up. It does poll inotify regularly, but I don't know how to trace what it's watching, or if that's even how it receives disc-inserted notifications. It doesn't call inotify_add_watch when I insert a disc or mount it (or eject or umount), but it could be watching all of /dev already or something like that. Of course, a DVD is mounted read-only, so whether it's inotify or something else, it should never need to poll anything on that. And if it is inotify, it's happening in the kernel, and the kernel should really never need to poll a device it's mounted to check for notifications.

• LSI 9260-8i w/ 6 256gb SSDs - RAID 5, 6, 10, or bad idea overall?

  We're provisioning a new production server for our reasonably busy website. Our choice of host have available a 6 drive configuration with a LSI 9260-8i card. My initial thought was to fill all six bays with SSDs (Intel 520 256gb) and set them up in RAID. Good, bad, or terrible idea? Can the card handle it? Should we be using RAID 5, 6 or 10? This would be the first time the provider have filled all six slots for this rackmount with SSDs, so they're a bit hesitant. I'm wondering if somebody else with this card has done something similar in a production environment. We do about 43gb of writes per day and currently use about 300gb of storage. The server acts as webserver, database, and image store for approx 1 million files. The plan is to underprovision the SSDs by approximately 10% to 20% to increase their overall lifespan & performance. The fallback option is 2x480gb SSDs in RAID 1 and another 2x1TB HDDs in RAID 1. The motivation behind this is that the server rental cost difference between 2xSSDs and 6xSSDs is minimal (compared to the overall cost of the rental). We do not have any special high-IOPs requirements. However, if the configuration is known to work, I don't see a good reason to not use it and not have to worry about having separate 'fast and small' and 'slow and large' disks.

• Dual Monitor Setup with Ati Radeon Hd 5700 results in unusabledesktop win7

  I have an ATI Radeon HD 5700 card which i've been using under fully updated windows 7 with its latest drivers. My monitor is a 2004 NEC LCD1703M which despite being pretty old runs fine. A friend gave me an IIYAMA ProLite E1900WS monitor (2009 or 20010 ). Both monitors are vga only. I've been using a DLDVI to VGA adapter to connect my old monitor and tested the same adapter to the new monitor and it worked fine. So I bought an HDMI to vga adapter with the purpose of having a dual monitor setup. But when both screens are connected to the card the following problem occurs: The monitor connected to the hdmi port cycles between sleep and a black screen while the other shows the operating system for about two seconds before getting black for another two seconds. I can "use" the computer (move the mouse,click,type e.t.c.) while this happens but its not something pleasant. I tried reinstalling the driver, booting with both screens connected (in which case the powerup messages and the bios are mirrored in both screens until I get to the login screen where everything falls apart) Funny thing is, everything works if I disconnect the ATI graphics card and use the onboard intel one. So, any suggestions as to what might be the problem and how I can fix it?

• Why my hard disk can't boot from the BIOS?

  I installed a new sata DVD burner. When I turned on the machine (windows 7) it didn't boot. It can boot from a lubuntu CD. There is an option on lubuntu to boot form the first hard disk. If I select it, the machine boots normally to windows 7. So from the CD I can boot but not from the BIOS. I checked all the options more than once: boot from HD, not boot from removable, boot from USB, boot from optical. The order of the boot sequence is HD then DVD. I tried booting only with the HD; I disconnected both DVDs. I even tried recovery of the MBR: bootsect, bootrec, fixmbr, buildbcd, nt60, etc. So, the question is, does this have a reason, what's the difference between booting from the BIOS (as I think) to from the DVD?. The BIOS is intel, it has BIOS codes on the right bottom corner, it stays at 5A for a while. 5A is "Resetting PATA/SATA bus and all devices".

• Ubuntu 12.04 froze during update, won't boot

  I've recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop, and every time i tried to update it, it would freeze for a few seconds, and tell me that the updates could not be downloaded. After many, many tries I managed to get them downloaded, but then in the middle of installing them, it froze. Completely. No mouse movement, no blinking lights, no nothing. After a few hours of letting it sit there, I finally hit the power button to do a hard reset, and now when I select Ubuntu on the boot screen (Dual-boot with Windows 7), I get a blank purple screen, and then nothing. Another freeze. I've tried getting into the console, but no command I input has any visible effect. I have a ton of music stored on the partition it's in, so I'd really rather not have to reinstall. My specs, to the best of my knowledge: Clevo Corp model B7130 (Sager custom) CPU: Intel Core i5 @ 2.53gHz (4 CPUs) Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 425m 4096 MB RAM Drivers: Whatever comes with the download of 12.04. As a side-note, I installed Ubuntu via the Windows Installer program (wubi). Does that make a difference?

• Windows 8 freezes after every other reboot on Lenovo W520 after about 10 seconds

  I have a Lenovo W520 laptop with i7-2760QM, intel 520 SSD and Nvidia Quadro 1000m. When i boot the PC with discrete graphics SET in BIOS, the computer totally freezes and the only thing left to do is reboot. This only happens with NVidia drivers for Windows 8 x64 installed (I've tried about 4 different drivers on Nvidia's site). When i boot the PC with integrated graphics set in BIOS, there is a momentary "hickup" after about 10 seconds (instead of freezing) and then everything is working fine. When i boot the PC with discrete graphics ON and no Nvidia drivers installed, the same thing happens as described above with integrated graphics. I've tried doing 1) bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes 2) Disabling VT-x in BIOS (Seriously would prefer not to disable it, since i use VM-s almost every day) but no dice. The only thing that worked was to enable the Hyper-v feature. I was then able to boot properly with discrete graphics and Nvidia drivers installed, but since i use VMWare for VM development this was no solution (VMWare complained about not being able to launch because of Hyper-v being installed). I followed the instructions in this tutorial, to be able to run VMWare. Then the computer just booted into a black screen past Windows logo. How to boot Windows 8 x64 without freezing with Quadro 1000M enabled, Nvidia Drivers installed and Hyper-v feature preferably disabled ?

• Very slow write performance on Debian 6.0 (AMD64) with DMCRYPT/LVM/RAID1

  I'm seeing very strange performance characteristics on one of my servers. This server is running a simple two-disk software-RAID1 setup with LVM spanning /dev/md0. One of the logical volumes /dev/vg0/secure is encrypted using dmcrypt with LUKS and mounted with the sync and noatimes flag. Writing to that volume is incredibly slow at 1.8 MB/s and the CPU usage stays near 0%. There are 8 crpyto/1-8 processes running (it's a Intel Quadcore CPU). I hope that someone on serverfault has seen this before :-(. uname -a 2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Mar 8 00:01:30 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux Interestingly, when I read from the device I get good performance numbers: reading without encryption: $ dd if=/dev/vg0/secure of=/dev/null bs=64k count=100000 100000+0 records in 100000+0 records out 6553600000 bytes (6.6 GB) copied, 68.8951 s, 95.1 MB/s reading with encryption: $ dd if=/dev/mapper/secure of=/dev/null bs=64k count=100000 100000+0 records in 100000+0 records out 6553600000 bytes (6.6 GB) copied, 69.7116 s, 94.0 MB/s However, when I try to write to the device: $ dd if=/dev/zero of=./test bs=64k 8809+0 records in 8809+0 records out 577306624 bytes (577 MB) copied, 321.861 s, 1.8 MB/s Also, when I read I see CPU usage, when I write, the CPU stays at almost 0% usage. • Least CPU intensive way of streaming your screen on windows?

  Hello, sometimes I like capturing my screen for others to see. Only thing: I am playing games while I do it. I have tried a few streaming solutions where Windows Media Encoder coupled with my own Windows server appealed to me most, because I can change resolutions, etc. I also tried ustream coupled with the Flash applet and the Adobe Flash Encoder recording a Camtasia source. Camtasia has the disadvantage though that it shows the green-and-black-alternating borders and can not be targeted fullscreen. I like how xfire does it. But it doesn't work with every game, many are simply not supported. A few thoughts about this: Is there a program which captures like Fraps or XFire (based on Direct3D and OpenGL outputs) and exposes the output to a DirectShow source filter? Which brings me to: Is there hardware accelerated capturing directly from the graphics card? Maybe including direct encoding with help from OpenCL? Modern graphic cards decode BluRay content directly for example. I should have a modern enough graphics processor for this to be possible (see below). If using Windows Media Encoder: Which are the least CPU intensive settings? Which codec? Is there a newer codec than Windows Media 9? Is it less CPU intensive? I only have 7, 8 and 9 inside the Encoder Could the performance be massively increased by having a Quad-Core CPU (see below)? Bandwidth is no problem up to 1000 to 1500 kbit/s (I have 2048). • Can't access my accelerated hard disk from msdos after installing linux on ssd cache

  I mistakenly installed Linux Mint on my ssd (forgot my PC actually came with one), when it detected a ~31GiB disk that it wanted to install to, I was a bit confused since I had brought out 30Gb in my primary disk for it, but I clicked continue. After installation, I tried to boot back into my Windows and it brought out some Intel Raid Disk Utility stuff saying I should disable acceleration on a disk something couldn't be found, I canceled it but whatever I tried, recovery tools, setups etc, I couldn't just access the drive which was apparently using the SSD as cache. Since then I've been stuck. I tried setting the 'raid' flag to the disk from 'gParted', still I couldn't. I tried the diskraid utility from windows recover disk, it said it couldn't detect any raid, diskpart sees the partition but doesn't see the volume, when I remove the raid flag, it sees the volume as one of raw type, and I can't access anything. I can however mount the drive from terminal in Mint and access my files, but I don't have any backup media at the moment so I can do a factory re-install. Please how do I go about solving the issue, precisely I would like to know how to boot into the drive again. Thanks!

• How expensive to run PC 24/7 or how to figure out how to determine it?

  I realize this question is difficult to answer as it would be different based on users location, what there PC is doing and what hardware it consist of, along with other factors but I am hoping someone could give me a very rough estimate. I have always ran many PC's in my home 24/7 and I am just now looking at it from a money/cost of electric point of view. 1) I live in Central Florida. Can anyone guesstomate/estimate the avaerage monthly or daily cost of running your average PC? Intel quad core processor, 1 SSD drive for OS and programs and 4-5 1-2 TB hard drives in a RAID setup for data. 750watt PSU. What would your guess be? 2) Also is there an accurate way to figure this out (non-super technical and confusing to a non-math person please) Also I have seen those kill-a-watt devices, do they figure this kind of stuff out for you? 3) Does a larger PSU make your PC consume more power? Thanks for any help, you can most likely tell I am somewhat lost about this!

• Format & Fresh Install Mac os x snow leopard in mac mini.

  Hello Every one. I have purchased dvd of Snow leopard 10.6.2. But actually I purchased mac mini with 10.5.7 leopard I tried to install snow leopard 10.6.2. Everything went perfectly. system was installed successfully. But the problem that I faced is as follows. System was installed but my older data remained as it is. ( means installation didn't format every thing - means installation was done on upgrade basis. ) Now, my system works with very low speed. Previous performance of mac mini was double as compare to current upgrade version. Now - my question are as follows. Does upgrade installation causes the performance in specially osx ? ( means anyone faced this kind of problem ? ) Or 10.6.2 snow leopard is heavy weight system for mac mini ? ( 2Ghz Intel core2duo,1GB RAM - is this configuration OK for snow leopard 10.6.2 ? ) Fresh install works better then upgrade in os x ?

  A company I work with recently replaced their old server and gave it to me. Their old server is a Dell PowerEdge 2600. I've been playing with the machine and even installed Windows Server 2008 on it...and it seems to run it pretty well. Here are the specs for the two machines: Dev Machine: AMD Athlon64 3000+ 2.38 GHz (overclocked from 1.8GHz [@ 280x8.5] - it is stable-ish) Memory (RAM): 1x1GB OCZ PC3200 (Dual-Channel) 300GB HD OS: Windows XP Pro (32bit) SuperPi 1M digit test: 40 seconds Dell PowerEdge 2600 Server: Intel Xeon CPU 2.8GHz 2.8GHz Memory (RAM): 512MBx2 (PC2700, not dual channel) 68GB HD (RAID 5) OS: Windows Server 2000 (32bit) SuperPi 1M digit test: 56 seconds [using 1 processor] (Themes and Aero-Flass UI turned off, of course) I use my computer to regularly run Photoshop CS5, Illustrator CS5, Flash CS5, 5 browsers (Chrome, FF, IE, Safari, Opera), iTunes, Visual Studio 2010, and Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 [sometimes simultaneously :-) ]. The SuperPi test has my dev machine coming in about 30% faster than the Server machine...though this could be due to the server running "Vista" with background processes prioritized. Do you think it would be realistic/advantageous for me to move from my dev machine to the Dell PowerEdge 2600? Is it possible to install additional DVD drives/burners on the server? Can I install my internal 300 GB hard drive on the server? Can I add some USB 2.0 ports? Note: I'll probably install Win XP Pro on the dev machine if I do switch. If not, are there any creative and useful way for me to take advantage of this server (with the goal of faster computing)?

• Huge host CPU usage in idle vmware guest. Ubuntu 10.04 host, Vista SP2 guest

  I'm experiencing huge host CPU usage with an idle vmware guest. Host: Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit 2.6.32-24-generic-pae. (Very new install, i.e 24 hours ago) Hardware is Dell XPS M1530 laptop, 4GB ram. Intel Core II Duo T9300 2.50Ghz The virtualization setting "VT" or something is enabled in my bios. Guest: Completely fresh install of Windows Vista, upgraded to latest SP2 and all windows updates installed. 1024 - 1512MB ram allocated. Absolutely no other software installed on it, apart from VMWare tools. Situation When the guest is doing absolutely nothing, I watch with sysinternals process watch on the guest. This shows that system idle process is between 70 and 99%, usually around 95%. No actual process doing anything. On the host, I watch with top, I get cpu usage of 20% - 80%, usually around 30%. What I have tried Single and Dual processor available to guest - no change. Turn off all peripherals to guest - no network, drives, usb etc - no change. Turn off 3d acceleration for guest - perhaps a small improvement, or no change. Upping allocated ram to guest from 1024MB to 1512MB - no change. Yelling at vmware - no change. I have experienced a similar issue in the past, which was solved by setting the guest to have 1 CPU. This time that hasn't worked.

  I am having very often internet disconnection problem with Squid proxy service. My server config; OS: CentOS release 6.3 (Final) model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz cpu MHz : 1600.000 My Local systems IP range:192.168.2.x Server IP: 192.168.2.11 Also this server is configured with lamp for development,Samba SMB file service manager and No svn currently. So i see maximum possibility is this squid proxy since this is where it stops to connect and am sure when i restart the server net started working so something wrong with this squid service only. And this server is connected with local 14 other windows machines and basically serves as a central development node. I am able to resolve it by restarting the server fully some time or sometimes by restarting the squid proxy which is totally killing our development. I have attached my cache log file here for the error info. • Why can't I install Java?

  I've been searching high and low for someone who can help me. I've been trying for a month. A month. to install Java on my new PC to no avail. No tech support forum can seem to help me. It all started while playing tekkit one day. I kept running out of memory (using the 32-bit JRE 7 u45) so I decided to install the 64-bit version. I uninstalled the 32-bit version first, for some reason, and downloaded the 64 bit runtime. In the installer, I go through all the normal screens until the installation progress bar appears. Then, it just sits there. No progress is made. No CPU is used by the installer, or any of its dependencies. The installer will stay like this for hours, days, and in one case a whole week without doing anything at all. I've tried installing older versions, the 32-bit version, even Java 6 and none of them will install. UAC is disabled, I've run regedit, CCleaner, and any other "fix-it" program there is. It's getting to the point where I may just have to wipe my hard drives and start over. I have several applications that require java, so this is an absolute necessity.   I have tried to use spell check for aquamac. I highlighted a region of the text. Then clicked Edit, then spell check region. I got the error message: Error : No word lists can be found for the language "en_US". Then I went to the website to download the following dictionaries: CocoAspell : I just clicked the download button. It was reported that the download was successful. However, when I tested it and highlighted a text region and clicked spell check. The same error message came out. Do I need to pull the downloaded .pkg to a certain place, such as the application folder, before I opened the .pkg? Or what else do I need to do make it work? I also downloaded the base package Aspell (for Intel) and the pre-built dictionaries as (as the instruction of the website), just the same way as point 1. I still got the same error message. Being an Ubuntu user I hardly use Windows, but occasionally I do. Like to run Skyrim and other games incompatible with Linux and WINE. The new Sims 3 Seasons patch is also now not supported. When playing these two games and other ones, theoretically. I have also heard others saying that while watching HD movies and video series it also happens. While watching the bluescreen as it happens, I see it is the 'atikmpag.sys' error. I have not installed much and nothing significant. I think I have downloaded Skyrim, Firefox and The Sims 3. I haven't done much more... since Ubuntu is definitely the best in comparison! (No hate, just a joke :P). I can reproduce it easily (just by running a game for less than a minute). It is always there each time, but it's never at a specific time or anything. So far I have found that it may be caused by lack of power to the graphics card, or it may be damaged or fried. Since I've had the computer for a mere 4 months (and have had other problems with it also). I have contacted Dell but they are useless beyond belief. Anyone with any information, solutions or details are encouraged to share your knowledge, as it would be immensely appreciated.

• Computer restarts without warning; code bcc116

  Processor: Intel i5 4430 4-Core 4x3Ghz Motherboard: msi h87-g41 Graphics Card: Nvidia GTX760 Power supply: eps-750 cm RAM: 8GB I bought a new assembled gaming PC which worked fine for a few days. Then it started rebooting without warning. After it restarts windows 7 gives me an bbc 116 error code. Apparently it's something to do with my video card, either it overheating or wrong drivers. I've installed the latest driver from Nvidia for my graphics card. Since it's brand new it can't be dust, I'm running it with its lid open to see if the problem persists. I'm also running prime95 now to see if it tells me anything else. Using core temp it tells me that my CPU reaches up to 95° celsius with the blend stress test from prime95. Aaaand it just peaked to 100°. Of course it doesn't reach these temperatures at all while idle/gaming. I'm gonna let prime95 run for a night and to see what happens. Until then does anyone know what I should do next?
