• Why would a PCI scan fail because of components that are not even installed?

  Recently a PCI scan was run against a web server and the result was a failure. Some of the issues could be fixed, however others simply make no sense to me. The machine was a clean install, there are only two things running, the .NET 3.5 website and the dotDefender web application firewall. However there are several errors similar to: Web server vulnerability Impact: /servlet/SessionServlet: JRun or Netware WebSphere default servlet found. All default code should be removed from servers. Risk Factor: Medium/ CVSS2 Base Score: 6.4 CVE: CVE-2000-0539 I'm not sure what this is, but I can't find anything on the server that looks anything like this. Web server vulnerability Impact: /some.php?=PHPE9568F35- D428-11d2-A769-00AA001ACF42: PHP reveals potentially sensitive information via certain HTTP requests that contain specific QUERY strings. Risk Factor: Medium/ CVSS2 Base Score: 5.0 PHP is not installed. Trying to add that query string to any page does nothing because the application ignores it. And doing that phpVersion check results in a 404. Similar to this, there are dozens of errors related to JSP and Oracle that are also not installed. Web server vulnerability Impact: /admin/database/wwForum.mdb: Web Wiz Forums pre 7.5 is vulnerable to Cross-Site Scripting attacks. Default login/pass is Administrator/letmein Risk Factor: Medium/ CVSS2 Base Score: 4.0 There are several errors like this, telling me that Web Wiz Forums, Alan Ward A-Cart 2.0, IlohaMail, etc. are all vulnerable. These are not installed or referenced anywhere I can find. There are even references to pages that simply don't exist, like OpenAutoClassifieds. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to why these errors are showing up or where I might look to find these components if they are in fact installed? Note: This website and server are for a subdomain of the main website. The main website runs on a server that is running Apache/PHP, but I don't have access to that server. The report says the subdomain was the site being scanned, but is it possible for it to have scanned the main site as well?

• init never reaping zombie/defunct processes

  Hi, On my Fedora Core 9 webserver with kernel 2.6.18.8, init isn't reaping zombie processes. This would be bearable if it wasn't for the process table eventually reaching an upper limit where no new processes can be allocated. • nginx can't see MySQL

  I have a fully working Joomla 2.5.6 install driven by a local MySQL server, but I'd like to test nginx to see if it's a faster web serving experience than Apache. \ PHP 5.4.6 (PHP54w) \ CentOS 6.2 \ Joomla 2.5.6 \ PHP54w-fpm.i386 (FastCGI process manager) \ php -m shows: mysql & mysqli modules loaded Nginx seems to have installed fine via yum, it can process a PHP-info file via FastCGI perfectly OK (http://37.128.190.241/php.php) but when I stop Apache, start nginx instead and visit my site I get: "Database connection error (1): The MySQL adapter 'mysqli' is not available." I've tried adjusting my Joomla configuration.php to use mysql instead of mysqli but I get the same basic error, only this time "Database connection error (1): The MySQL adapter 'mysql' is not available" of course! Can anyone think what the problem might be please? I did try explicitly setting extension = mysqli.so and extension = mysql.so in my php.ini to try and force the issue (despite php -m showing they were both successfully loaded anyway) - no difference. Any thoughts? I have re installed glassfish and NetBeans but it all seems the same. I think this started happening after I had to force-restart my computer with NetBeans stil open and the app deployed, but it's hard to know for sure if this was the real catalyst. Any thoughts or help is appreciated thanks. Is it an app error? if so why no errors in the log are shown?

  It happens at the same place in my code (albeit not the first time the method is executed) but I can't make head or tail of what is wrong. (Doubly so as it's code for a robot). • error initializing multiple configuration files

  I am trying to toggle between CKEditor and textarea in a facelet(.xhtml) file. I have used the same code in a jsp file and it works fine. But in .xhtml file its not doing the toggle between ckeditor and plain editor.It loads ckeditor both the times.Can anyone please let me know what am I missing. • How do I use jQueryUI's ui-states with JSF2's h:messages?

  It seems like it should be very simple to specify that the h:messages generated by JSF should be styled using jQueryUI's nice ui-states. But sadly I can't make it fit. It seems that the jQueryUI states require several elements (div,div,p,span) in order to make it work. • Does IntelliJ-Idea support Groovy 2.x?

  I just tried IntelliJ-Idea 11.x and 12.x (EPA), but when I use Groovy 2.0.1 or 2.0.5, the code can't be run and there are some errors out there. The Groovy plugin of idea has little information about which version of Groovy has been supported. Does idea support Groovy 2.x? I want to try the new @TypeChecked annotation of Groovy 2. Uncompress the css style classes 3. CHECK_FILE_MODIFICATION so that you see your skinning changes right away 4. View the generated CSS File   1. Firebug is your friend Install Firebug (http://getfirebug.com/layout) into Firefox and use it to view your rendered jspx page in the browser. You can select the HTML dom nodes on your page and you can see the css styles applied to each dom node.   2. Uncompress the css style classes By default the styleclasses that are rendered are compressed. You may see style classes like class="x10" and class="x2e". But in your skin css file you have styleclasses like: af|inputText::content or af|panelBox::header   It is easier for you to develop a skin and debug a skin with Firebug if you see the uncompressed styleclasses. To do this, a. open web.xml b. add   <context-param>     <param-name>org.apache.myfaces.trinidad.DISABLE_CONTENT_COMPRESSION</param-name>     <param-value>true</param-value>   </context-param> c. save d. restart the server and re-run your page.   3. CHECK_FILE_MODIFICATION so that you see your skinning changes right away   For performance sake the ADF Faces framework does not check if you skin .css file has changed on every render. But this is exactly what you want to happen when you are developing or debugging a skin. You want your changes to get noticed right away, without restarting the server.   To do this, a. open web.xml b. add   <context-param>     <description>If this parameter is true, there will be an automatic check of the modification date of your JSPs, and saved state will be discarded when JSP's change. It will also automatically check if your skinning css files have changed without you having to restart the server. This makes development easier, but adds overhead. For this reason this parameter should be set to false when your application is deployed.</description>     <param-name>org.apache.myfaces.trinidad.CHECK_FILE_MODIFICATION</param-name>     <param-value>false</param-value>   </context-param> c. save d. restart the server and re-run your page. e. from then on, you can change your skin's .css file, save it and refresh your page and you should see the changes right away   4. View the generated CSS File   There are different ways to view the generated CSS File which is your skin's css file merged in with all the skins it extends and processed and generated to the filesystem and linked to your generated html page. One way is to view it with Firebug. The problem with this approach is you might see something that is a little different than the actual css file because Firebug may do some extra processing. • How-to filter table filter input to only allow numeric input

  In a previous ADF Code Corner post, I explained how to change the table filter behavior by intercepting the query condition in a query filter. See sample #30 at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/learnmore/index-101235.html In this OTN Harvest post I explain how to prevent users from providing invalid character entries as table filter criteria to avoid problems upon re-querying the table. In the example shown next, only numeric values are allowed for a table column filter. To create a table that allows data filtering, drag a View Object – or a data collection of a Web Service or JPA business service – from the DataControls panel and drop it as a table. Choose the Enable Filtering option in the Edit Table Columns dialog so the table renders with the column filter boxes displayed. The table filter fields are created using implicit af:inputText components that need to be customized for you to apply a custom filter input component, or to change the input behavior. To change the input filter, so only a defined set of input keys is allowed, you need to change the default filter field with your own af:inputText field to which you apply an af:clientListener tag that filters user keyboard entries. For this, in the Oracle JDeveloper visual editor, select the column which filter you want to change and expand the column node in the Oracle JDeveloper Structure Window. Part of the column definition is the Column facet node. Expand the facets so you see the filter facet entry. The filter facet is grayed out as there is no custom facet defined. In a next step, open theComponent Palette (ctrl+shift+P) and drag an Input Text component onto the facet. This demarks the first part in the filter customization. To make the custom filter component work, you need to map the af:inputText component value property to the ADF filter criteria that is exposed in the Expression Builder. Open the Expression Builder for the filter input component value property by clicking the arrow icon to its right. In the Expression Builder expand the JSP Objects | vs | filterCriteria node to select the attribute name represented by the table column. The vs entry is the name of a variable that is defined on the table and that grants you access to the table attributes. Now that the filter works as before – though using a custom filter input component – you can add the af:clientListener tag to your custom filter component – af:inputText – to call out to JavaScript when users type in the column filter field Point the client filter method property to a JavaScript function that you reference or add through using the af:resource tag and set the type property value to keyDown. <af:document id="d1">     <af:resource type="javascript" source="/js/filterHandler.js"/> … The filter definition looks as shown below <af:inputText label="Label 1" id="it1"                         value="#{vs.filterCriteria.Employe        <af:clientListener method="suppressCharacterInput"                                     type="keyDown"/> </af:inputText> The JavaScript code that you can use to either filter character inputs or numeric inputs is shown below. • Monitoring Events in your BPEL Runtime - RSS Feeds?

  @10g - It had been a while since I'd tried something different. so here's what I did this week!Whenever our Developers deployed processes to the BPEL runtime, or perhaps when a process gets turned off due to connectivity issues, or maybe someone retired a process, I needed to know. So here's what I did. Step 1: Downloaded Quartz libraries and went through the documentation to understand what it takes to schedule a recurring job. Step 2: Cranked out two components using Oracle JDeveloper. [Within a new Web Project] a) A simple Java Class named FeedUpdater that extends org.quartz.Job. All this class does is to connect to your BPEL Runtime [via opmn:ormi] and fetch all events that occured in the last "n" minutes. events? - If it doesn't ring a bell - its right there on the BPEL Console. It is very straight forward. It will make this look much simpler.   Now that both components were ready, I packaged the Application into a war file and deployed it onto my Application Server. When the servlet initialized, the "n" second schedule was set/initialized. From then on, the servlet kept populating the RSS Feed file. I just ensured that my "Job" code keeps only 30 latest events within it, so that the feed file is small and under control. [a few kbs]   Next I opened up the feed xml on my browser - It requested a subscription - and Here I was - watching new deployments/life cycle events all popping up on my browser toolbar every 5 (actually n)  minutes!   Well, you could do it on a browser/reader of your choice - or perhaps read them like you read an email on your thunderbird!.

• Solaris 11 Live CD alapú telepítés

  Az elozo részben megigért két telepítési eljárás helyett kénytelen vagyok ebben a bejegyzésben kizárólag a Live CD-s változattal foglalkozni. Korábban nem gondoltam, hogy ennek bemutatása is több, mint 50 képernyo kimenetet igényel, ezért változtatnom kellett a korábbi tervezeten. A Solaris 11 Live CD-s telepítés elsosorban az asztali (desktop) felhasználók igényeit veszi figyelembe és kizárólag x86-os architektúrájú gépeken támogatott (annak ellenére, hogy SPARC-os rendszerek is rendelkeznek grafikus kártyával - pl. T4-1).A folyamat két részre bontható: eloször a vendéggép kerül kialakítása VirtualBox környezetben, majd ezt követi a Solaris 11-es telepítése virtuális gépre. HCL és segédprogramok (DDT, DDU) Mielott telepíteni szeretnénk a Solaris operációs rendszert, célszeru tájékozódni fizikai rendszerünk támogatottságáról. Erre jól használható a már említett hardver kompatibilitási (HCL) lista, vagy az alábbi két segédprogram: Device Detection Tool Device Driver Utility Mindkét alkalmazás képes rendszerünk hardver komponenseit feltérképezni és ellenorizni azok meghajtóprogram (driver) ellátottságát. Eltérés köztük abban nyilvánul meg, hogy míg a DDT futtatásához Java szükséges, addig a DDU Solarist igényel. Ez utóbbiról a telepítés során röviden szó fog esni. Telepíto készletek letöltési helye Hálózati installációtól eltekintve (*) telepítokészletre van szükségünk, mely az alábbi oldalról töltheto le. Célszeru letöltenünk mindhárom állományt és a csomagokat tartalmazó ún. repository médiát (a következo felsorolás utolsó eleme) is: sol-11-1111-live-x86.iso sol-11-1111-text-x86.iso sol-11-1111-ai-x86.iso sol-11-1111-repo-full.iso Az elso három változat indítható USB formátumban is rendelkezésre áll - ekkor iso végzodés helyett usb található a fájlnevek végén. Rövid utalást az egyes készletek feladatáról az elozo blog bejegyzés tartalmaz (link). Amennyiben SPARC architektúrájú rendszerre szeretnénk a telepítést végezni, 'x86' helyett a 'sparc' szöveget tartalmazó állományokra lesz szükség. (*) - arra is lehetoség van, hogy AI készletrol történo indítás segítségével végezzük a hálózaton keresztül történo telepítést. Ez akkor fontos, ha célgépünkön nincs PXE (Preboot Execution Environment) boot támogatás. VirtualBox konfigurálás Külön fizikai eszköz felhasználása nélkül virtuális környezetben is használható a Solaris 11, mint vendéggép. A VirtualBox használatával erre kényelmes lehetoség kínálkozik. Gazdagépünknek (Windows, Unix, Linux) megfelelo telepíto program, vagy programcsomag (jelenleg a 4.1.16-os verzió a legfrissebb változat) és az installációt is taglaló felhasználói kézikönyv letöltheto a termék oldaláról. A sikeres telepítést követoen az alábbi lépések során jutunk el az új virtuális gép kialakulásáig: 1. A VBox indítása után a központi ablak megmutatja a már létezo virtuális gépeinket (Sol11demo, Sol11u1b07, Sol11.1B16, Sun_ZFS_Storage_7000) és az aktuálisan kiválasztott egyed (Sol11demo) fobb jellemzoit (megnevezés, memória mérete, virtuális tároló eszközök listája...stb.) 2. A New gombra kattintva elindul a virtuális gépet létrehozó segéd (wizard) 3. Ezt követoen nevet kell adnunk a vendéggépnek és ki kell választanunk az operációs rendszer típusát (beszédes név használata esetén a VirtualBox képes az operációs rendszer családját kiválasztani, nekünk pusztán csak verziót kell beállítanunk): adjuk meg Solaris11-et névként és válasszuk a 64bites változatot (feltéve, hogy gazdagépünk támogatja ezt) 4. Telepítéshez és a kezdeti lépések megtételéhez 1536MB memória tökéletesen megfelel (ez késobb módosítható az elvárások függvényében) 5. Fizikai társaihoz hasonlóan, egyetlen virtuális gép sem létezhet merevlemez (jelen esetben virtuális diszk) nélkül. Használhatunk egy már létezo területet (virtuális lemezt tartalmazó állomány), de létrehozhatunk egy nekünk tetszo új példányt is. Maradjunk ez utóbbinál (Create new hard disk)! 6. A lehetséges formátumok közül - az egyszeruség okán - éljünk a felkínált alaptípussal (VDI - VirtualBox Disk Image). 7. Létrehozás során a virtuális lemez készülhet egyidejuleg (Fixed size), vagy több lépésben dinamikusan (Dynamically allocated). Az elso változat sokkal kevésbé terheli a rendszert, a második elonye pedig a helytakarékosság. Válasszuk a fix méretu változatot. 8. Most már csak egyetlen adat ismeretlen a VirtualBox számára, mégpedig a létrehozásra kerülo virtuális lemez nagysága. 8GB-os terület jelen esetben alkalmas az ismerkedés elkezdéséhez. 9. Amennyiben minden beállítást helyesen adtunk meg, a Create gomb megnyomása után elindul a virtuális lemez létrehozása. 10. Ez a muvelet a megadott adatoktól függoen néhány perc alatt befejezodik. 11. Hasonló megerosítés (Create gomb aktiválása) után elkezdodik a kért virtuális gép létrehozása is. 12. Sikeres végrehajtás után az új vitruális gép közvetlenül megjelenik a központi ablak baloldali listáján a rendelkezésre álló virtuális gépek közt. A blog bejegyzés folyamatosan frissül...a rész fennmaradó tartalma hamarosan felkerül az oldalra.

  The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) is a group tasked with providing thought-leadership to the global banking industry.  Over the years, the BCBS has released volumes of guidance in an effort to promote stability within the financial sector.  By effectively communicating best-practices, the Basel Committee has influenced financial regulations worldwide.  Basel regulations are intended to help banks: More easily absorb shocks due to various forms of financial-economic stress Improve risk management and governance Enhance regulatory reporting and transparency In June 2011, the BCBS released Basel III: A global regulatory framework for more resilient banks and banking systems.  This new set of regulations included many enhancements to previous rules and will have both short and long term impacts on the banking industry.  Some of the key features of Basel III include: A stronger capital base More stringent capital standards and higher capital requirements Introduction of capital buffers  Additional risk coverage Enhanced quantification of counterparty credit risk Credit valuation adjustments  Wrong  way risk  Asset Value Correlation Multiplier for large financial institutions Liquidity management and monitoring Introduction of leverage ratio Even more rigorous data requirements To implement these features banks need to embark on a journey replete with challenges. These can be categorized into three key areas: Data, Models and Compliance. Data Challenges Data quality - All standard dimensions of Data Quality (DQ) have to be demonstrated.  Manual approaches are now considered too cumbersome and automation has become the norm. Data lineage - Data lineage has to be documented and demonstrated.  The PPT / Excel approach to documentation is being replaced by metadata tools.  Data lineage has become dynamic due to a variety of factors, making static documentation out-dated quickly.  Data dictionaries - A strong and clean business glossary is needed with proper identification of business owners for the data.  Data integrity - A strong, scalable architecture with work flow tools helps demonstrate data integrity.  Manual touch points have to be minimized.   Data relevance/coverage - Data must be relevant to all portfolios and storage devices must allow for sufficient data retention.  Coverage of both on and off balance sheet exposures is critical.   Model Challenges Model development - Requires highly trained resources with both quantitative and subject matter expertise. Model validation - All Basel models need to be validated. This requires additional resources with skills that may not be readily available in the marketplace.  Model documentation - All models need to be adequately documented.  Creation of document templates and model development processes/procedures is key. Risk and finance integration - This integration is necessary for Basel as the Allowance for Loan and Lease Losses (ALLL) is calculated by Finance, yet Expected Loss (EL) is calculated by Risk Management – and they need to somehow be equal.  This is tricky at best from an implementation perspective.  Compliance Challenges Rules interpretation - Some Basel III requirements leave room for interpretation.  A misinterpretation of regulations can lead to delays in Basel compliance and undesired reprimands from supervisory authorities. Gap identification and remediation - Internal identification and remediation of gaps ensures smoother Basel compliance and audit processes.  However business lines are challenged by the competing priorities which arise from regulatory compliance and business as usual work.  Qualification readiness - Providing internal and external auditors with robust evidence of a thorough examination of the readiness to proceed to parallel run and Basel qualification  In light of new regulations like Basel III and local variations such as the Dodd Frank Act (DFA) and Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review (CCAR) in the US, banks are now forced to ask themselves many difficult questions.  For example, executives must consider: How will Basel III play into their Risk Appetite? How will they create project plans for Basel III when they haven’t yet finished implementing Basel II? How will new regulations impact capital structure including profitability and capital distributions to shareholders? After all, new regulations often lead to diminished profitability as well as an assortment of implementation problems as we discussed earlier in this note.  However, by requiring banks to focus on premium growth, regulators increase the potential for long-term profitability and sustainability.  And a more stable banking system: Increases consumer confidence which in turn supports banking activity  Ensures that adequate funding is available for individuals and companies Puts regulators at ease, allowing bankers to focus on banking Stability is intended to bring long-term profitability to banks.  Therefore, it is important that every banking institution takes the steps necessary to properly manage, monitor and disclose its risks.  This can be done with the assistance and oversight of an independent regulatory authority.  A spectrum of banks exist today wherein some continue to debate and negotiate with regulators over the implementation of new requirements, while others are simply choosing to embrace them for the benefits I highlighted above. In the Structure Window., expand the view activity node and then the train-stop node therein Add the display name element by using the right-click context menu on the train-stop node, selecting Insert inside train-stop > Display Name Edit the Display Name value with the Property Inspector Following the steps outlined above, you can define static display names – like "PF1" for page fragment 1 shown in the image below - for train stops to show at runtime. In the following, I explain how you can change the static display string to a dynamic string that reads the display label from a resource bundle so train stop labels can be internationalized. There are different strategies available for managing message bundles within an Oracle JDeveloper project. In this blog entry, I decided to build and configure the default properties file as indicated by the projects properties. To learn about the suggested file name and location, open the JDeveloper project properties (use a right mouse click on the project node in the Application Navigator and choose Project Properties. Select the Resource Bundle node to see the suggested name and location for the default message bundle. Note that this is the resource bundle that Oracle JDeveloper would automatically create when you assign a text resource to an ADF Faces component in a page. For the train stop display name, we need to create the message bundle manually as there is no context menu help available in Oracle JDeveloper. For this, use a right mouse click on the JDeveloper project and choose New | General | File from the menu and in the opened dialog. Specify the message bundle file name as the name looked up before in the project properties Resource Bundle option. Also, ensure that the file is saved in a directory structure that matches the package structure shown in the Resource Bundle dialog. For example, you would save the properties file in the View Project's src > adf > sample directory if the package structure was "adf.sample" (adf.sample.ViewControllerBundle). Edit the properties file and define key – values pairs for the train stop component. In the sample, such key value pairs are TrainStop1=Train Stop 1 TrainStop2=Train Stop 2 TrainStop3=Train Stop 3 Next, double click the faces-config.xml file and switch the opened editor to the Overview tab. Select the Application category and press the green plus icon next to the Resource Bundle section. Define the resource bundle Base Name as the package and properties file name, for example adf.sample.ViewControllerBundle Finally, define a variable name for the message bundle so the bundle can be accessed from Expression Language. For this blog example, the name is chosen as "messageBundle". <resource-bundle>   <base-name>adf.sample.ViewControllerBundle</base-name>   <var>messageBundle</var> </resource-bundle> Next, select the display-name element in the train stop node (similar to when creating the display name) and use the Property Inspector to change the static display string to an EL expression referencing the message bundle. Instead the whole table needs to be refreshed, rerunning the managed bean list query. Be aware that having individual list values per table row is an expensive operation that should be used only on small tables for Business Services with low latency data fetching (e.g. ADF Business Components and EJB) and with server side caching strategies for the queried data (e.g. storing queried list data in a managed bean in session scope).

• My own personal use of Oracle Linux

  It always is easier to explain something with examples... Many people still don't seem to understand some of the convenient things around using Oracle Linux and since I personally (surprise!) use it at home, let me give you an idea. I have quite a few servers at home and I also have 2 hosted servers with a hosted provider. The servers at home I use mostly to play with random Linux related things, or with Oracle VM or just try out various new Oracle products to learn more. I like the technology, it's like a hobby really. To be able to have a good installation experience and use an officially certified Linux distribution and not waste time trying to find the right libraries, I, of course, use Oracle Linux. Now, at least I can get a copy of Oracle Linux for free (even if I was not working for Oracle) and I can/could use that on as many servers at home (or at my company if I worked elsewhere) for testing, development and production. I just go to http://edelivery.oracle.com/linux and download the version(s) I want and off I go. Now, I also have the right (and not because I am an employee) to take those images and put them on my own server and give them to someone else, I in fact, just recently set up my own mirror on my own hosted server. I don't have to remove oracle-logos, I don't have to rebuild the ISO images, I don't have to recompile anything, I can just put the whole binary distribution on my own server without contract. Perfectly free to do so. Of course the source code of all of this is there, I have a copy of the UEK code at home, just cloned from https://oss.oracle.com/git/?p=linux-2.6-unbreakable.git. And as you can see, the entire changelog, checkins, merges from Linus's tree, complete overview of everything that got changed from kernel to kernel, from patch to patch, errata to errata. No obfuscating, no tar balls and spending time with diff, or go read bug reports to find out what changed (seems silly to me). Some of my servers are on the external network and I need to be current with security errata, but guess what, no problem, my servers are hooked up to http://public-yum.oracle.com which is open, free, and completely up to date, in a consistent, reliable way with any errata, security or bugfix. So I have nothing to worry about. Also, not because I am an employee. Anyone can. And, with this, I also can, and have, set up my own mirror site that hosts these RPMs. both binary and source rpms. Because I am free to get them and distribute them. I am quite capable of supporting my servers on my own, so I don't need to rely on the support organization so I don't need to have a support subscription :-). So I don't need to pay. Neither would you, at least not with Oracle Linux. Another cool thing. The hosted servers came (unfortunately) with Centos installed. While Centos works just fine as is, I tend to prefer to be current with my security errata(reliably) and I prefer to just maintain one yum repository instead of 2, I converted them over to Oracle Linux as well (in place) so they happily receive and use the exact same RPMs. Since Oracle Linux is exactly the same from a user/application point of view as RHEL, including files like /etc/redhat-release and no changes from .el. to .centos. I know I have nothing to worry about installing one of the RHEL applications. So, OL everywhere makes my life a lot easier and why not... Next! Since I run Oracle VM and I have -tons- of VM's on my machines, in some cases on my big WOPR box I have 15-20 VMs running. Well, no problem, OL is free and I don't have to worry about counting the number of VMs, whether it's 1, or 4, or more than 10 ... like some other alternatives started doing... and finally :) I like to try out new stuff, not 3 year old stuff. So with UEK2 as part of OL6 (and 6.3 in particular) I can play with a 3.0.x based kernel and it just installs and runs perfectly clean with OL6, so quite current stuff in an environment that I know works, no need to toy around with an unsupported pre-alpha upstream distribution with libraries and versions that are not compatible with production software (I have nothing against ubuntu or fedora or opensuse... just not what I can rely on or use for what I need, and I don't need a desktop). pretty compelling. I say... and again, it doesn't matter that I work for Oracle, if I was working elsewhere, or not at all, all of the above would still apply. Student, teacher, developer, whatever. contrast this with $349 for 2 sockets and oneguest and selfsupport per year to even just get the software bits.

• CPU/JVM/JBoss 7 slows down over time

  I'm experiencing performance slow down on JBoss 7.1.1 Final. I wrote simple program that demostrates this behavior. After few days of JBoss 7.1.1. running, it takes 330 sec to run this code. In both cases, I launch the code when the CPU utilization is very low (say, 1%). Any ideas why? I run the server with following arguments: -Xms1280m -Xmx2048m -XX:MaxPermSize=2048m -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -Dorg.jboss.resolver.warning=true -Dsun.rmi.dgc.client.gcInterval=3600000 -Dsun.rmi.dgc.server.gcInterval=3600000 -Djboss.modules.system.pkgs=org.jboss.byteman -Djava.awt.headless=true -Duser.timezone=UTC -Djboss.server.default.config=standalone-full.xml -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,address=8787,server=y,suspend=n I'm running it on Linux 2.6.32-279.11.1.el6.x86_64 with java version "1.7.0_07". It's within J2EE applicaiton. I use CDI so I have a button on JSF page that will call method "proceed" on @RequestScoped component PerformanceTest. I deploy this as separate war file and even if I undeploy other applications, it doesn't change the performance. It's a virtual machine that is sharing CPUs with another machine but that one doesn't consume anything. Here's yet another observation: when the server is after fresh start and I run the bubble sort, It utilizes 100% of one processor core. It never switches to another core or drops utilization below 95%. However after some time the server is running and I'm experiencing the performance problems, the method above is utilizing CPU core usually 100%, however I just found out from htop that this task is being switched very often to other cores. That is, at the beginning it's running on core #1, after say 2 seconds it's running on #5 then after say 2 seconds #8 etc. Furthermore, the utilization is not kept at 100% at the core but sometimes drops to 80% or even lower. For the server after fresh start, even though If I simulate a load, it never switches the task to another core.

• How to create a simple adf dashboard application with EJB 3.0

  In this month's Oracle Magazine, Frank Nimphius wrote a very good article about an Oracle ADF Faces dashboard application to support persistent user personalization. You can read this entire article clicking here. The idea in this article is to extend the dashboard application. My idea here is to create a similar dashboard application, but instead ADF BC model layer, I'm intending to use EJB3.0. There are just a one small trick here and I'll show you. I'm using the HR usual oracle schema. The steps are: 1. Create a ADF Fusion Application with EJB as a layer model 2. Generate the entities from table (I'm using Department and Employees only) 3. Create a new Session Bean. I called it: HRSessionEJB 4. In the wizard screen, Bars label, adds: sum, avg, max, min. In the X Axis label, adds: departmentName, and click in OK button 12.
