• Using npgsql with SSIS

  Hi, I am using npgsql as the ADO.NET provider in SSIS to connect to Postgres and create some workflows. I am able to connect to postgres but am unable to use the "Table or view" data access mode to list the tables and views. I have to resort to using "SQL command" data access mode. For the "table or view" access mode, the log shows that the last call is GetDataSourceInformation and it returns successfully. After that there is a close connection. Has anyone successfully used "Table or view" data access mode using npgsql? Thanks, Flash

• Is this an acceptable UI design decision?

  OK, while I'm on record as stating that StackExchange UI is pretty much one of the best websites and overall GUIs that I have ever seen as far as usability goes, there's one particular aspect of the trilogy that bugs me. For an example, head on to http://meta.stackoverflow.com . Look at the banner on top (the one that says "reminder -- it's April Fool's Day depending on your time zone!"). Personally, I feel that this is a "make the user do the figuring out work" anti-pattern (whatever it's officially called) - namely, instead of making your app smart enough to only present a certain mode of operations in the conditions when that mode is appropriate, you simply turn on the mode full on and put an explanation to the user of why the mode is on when it should not be (in this particular example, the mode is of course displaying the unicorn gravatars starting with 00:00 in the first timezone, despite the fact that some users still live in March 31st). The Great Recalc was also handled the same way - instead of proactively telling the user "your rep was changed from X to Y" the same nearly invisible banner was displayed on meta. So, the questions are: Is there such an official anti-pattern, and if so,m what the heck do i call it? Do you have any other well-known examples of such design anti-pattern? How would you fix either the SO example I made or you your own example? Is there a pattern of fixing or must it be a case-by-case solution?

• RHEL 5.x SCSI Driver .img update for initrd.img

  I have production DB server (RHEL 5.1) with LSI Megaraid driver loaded during setup via DUD (Driver Upd Diskett). Now I'd like to update kernel and other packeges to 5.4 version. I also downloaded new LSI SCSI driver (megasr-13.11.0922.2009-1-rhel50-u4-all.img ). Could you explain the necessary steps to make this driver visible on boot for new kernel (lets assume, that I've already update kernel to 5.4)? I read the article on Redhat - "How do I add a driver to the initrd.img". Does it contain all the steps I need? Thanks in advance!

• Ubuntu Server - Power failure leads to boot failure

  I have installed Ubuntu Server 10.04.1 LTS on an ext4 partition. Whenever my system looses power suddenly, It doesn't boot into the normal procedure to fix the problems automatically, but switches to the busy box shell (where it says Kernel Panic : No init found) So I guess kernel is refusing to mount the filesystem when it is not clean, since when I boot up using a Live CD and fsck it, it boots up correctly. How can I force kernel to mount the filesystem, even if it is not clean ?, so that automated fsck on system startup fixes the problems... (or it's a grub problem ?) K-V : 2.6.32-26-generic-pae #48-Ubuntu SMP

I'm trying to build it up again, but while I'm at it, I thought I'd pick up other good configurations that other people use. So, if you use Emacs, what's in your .emacs? Mine is pretty barren right now, containing only: Global font-lock-mode! (global-font-lock-mode 1) My personal preferences with respect to indentation, tabs, and spaces. Use cperl-mode instead of perl-mode. A shortcut for compilation. What do you think is useful?

• modprobe amd-rng fails, No such device

  When trying to install hw_random to a 2.6 kernel, modprobe returns a FATAL error "No such device" on both CentOS 5.7 and Fedora 15. Both are using the latest kernel, respectively. The .ko file exists, and config- contains CONFIG_RTC=y and CONFIG_CRYPTO_RNG=m Both servers are x86_64 AMD processors. The only google results are very old, often reference the kernel module 'hw_random' (which has been replaced with processor specific modules and don't offer much help. Has anyone been able to install hw_random? Am I missing a step while installing the module?

• Potential issues to consider when using debootstrap for different Ubuntu distros

  We currently run Lucid on top of Xen. Using debootstrap, we have created many jailed environments for Lucid (10.04), Maverick (10.10) and Natty (11.04). We're considering creating an Oneiric environment as well. However, we're beginning to wonder what the consequences of doing so are. What incompatibilities should we watch out for? The Lucid base runs on the 2.6.32 Kernel, and happens to be running on Amazon EC2 (Xen). We realize that Oneiric when installed from scratch comes with the 3.0 Kernel. Also, if we were to upgrade the Lucid base to Oneiric (including the Kernel), what would we have to watch out for to ensure that the Lucid, Maverick, and Natty jailed environments still work fine?

• FMOD.net streaming, callback and exinfo parameters

  I posted a question on gamedev about how to play nsf files (NES console music) in FMOD. It didn't get any results, but since then I made some progress. I decided that the easiest method was just to compile an existing player into a dll and then call it from C# to populate my buffer. The problem now is getting it to sound right, and making sure all my paremeters are correct. Here are the facts so far: The nsf dll is dealing with shorts, so the data is PCM16. The sample nsf I'm using has a playback rate of 60 Hz. Just for playing around now, I'm using a frequency of 48000. Based on 2 and 3, the dll calculates a necessary buffer size of 48000 / 60hz = 800. This means it will render 800 shorts worth of buffer for every simulated NES frame. I've so far got my C# code to play the nsf, at the correct pitch and tempo, but it's very grainy / fuzzy, which I'm attributing to the fact that the FMOD read callback is giving a data length of 1600, whereas I should be expecting 800. I've tried playing around with all the numbers and it either crashes, or the music changes pitch, tempo, or both. With this code sample, it's coming in as 3200. I don't know where that factor of 4 between it and the decodebuffersize comes from. Is datalen in the callback referring to number of bytes, or shorts? The process_buffer function takes a short array and its length. I would expect fmod is talking about shorts as well because I told it PCM16. Maybe my playback quality is bad for some totally different reason. If so I have no idea where to begin solving that. Any ideas there?

• Error "fileid changed" when accessing files over NFS

  I have an nfs-kernel-server configured and running on Ubuntu 10.04 Server. /export THIRD_SERVER_IP(rw,fsid=0,insecure,no_subtree_check,async) SECOND_SERVER_IP(rw,fsid=0,insecure,no_subtree_check,async) /export/ebs THIRD_SERVER_IP(rw,fsid=0,insecure,no_subtree_check,async) SECOND_SERVER_IP(rw,nohide,insecure,no_subtree_check,async) I mounted the exported folder to the second server: mount -t nfs4 -o proto=tcp,port=2049 NFS_SERVER_IP_HERE:/ebs /ebs and it works just fine. I mounted it to the third server but I cannot access files from it. ls -l /ebs ls: reading directory /ebs: Stale NFS file handle total 0 The syslog on the third server says: kernel: [11575.483720] NFS: server NFS_SERVER_IP_HERE error: fileid changed kernel: [11575.483722] fsid 0:14: expected fileid 0x2, got 0x6e001 Some info: uname -r 2.6.32-312-ec2 uname -m i686

• Encrypt/Decrypt ECB/PKS5/Blowfish between AS3Crypto & Javax.Crypto fails with padding error

  I have a secret key that was sent to me as a file so I can encrypt some xml data using Blowfish. How do I access the key so that I can use it with AS3Crypto? I assume I need to Embed it using the [Embed] meta tag. It's mimeType="application/octet-stream" but I'm not sure if thats right. How do I embed, then reference this file as the secret key? The xmls that I'm encrypting cannot be decrypted on the Java side. Each attempt fails with this exception: javax.crypto.BadPaddingException: Given final block not properly padded. As a bonus, if anyone has experience using the lib to work with the Java implementation and knows the ideal mode/padding/IV to use that would be awesome. Thanks! //keyFile is an embedded asset.   i installed gentoo by the handbook from official site , when i got into the step 7.b. Installing the Sources , the book says :Code Listing 2.2: Viewing the kernel source symlink, When you take a look in /usr/src you should see a symlink called linux pointing to your kernel source. but ,in my virtualbox, there is no such file! ,only a linux-3..3.38-gentoo directory in the src and when i tried to use cd linux-3.3.38-gentoo and make menuconfig , an error occured , init/Kconfig:389: can't open file "kernel/irq/Kconfig" how can i solve the problem?

• J2me Blackberry Numeric Input

  Hello, I am developing a blackberry application using j2me and LWUIT (blackberry port). Everything works great except for the TextField in numeric mode. Basically when you have focus on the TextField you have to first go into "NUMERIC" mode (by pressing alt + aA) in order to input, which is not user friendly and a problem. The proposed solution is to use a TextArea instead that allows you to open a NATIVE type input box. The problem there is that the user needs to focus the field and then press the fire button which again is unfriendly. Does anyone know of any simple solutions? The few solutions i have in mind (but not sure how to do them): 1) Capture any keypress on the TextArea and go into NATIVE mode, instead of just the fire key. 2) Put the blackberry input mode into numeric using code for the whole form. • Problem with Lenovo x200s Wifi under Ubutu Karmic

  Hi, I have just gotten my Lenovo X200s laptop, and I am install Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic on it. The installation went through without a hitch, but I can't get my wifi to work. lspci | grep Network Produces the following results: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03) 03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. • What is the right way to scale a Flex application up to fullscreen?

  Fullscreen mode and I have been battling for a while in this Flex application, and I'm coming up short on Google results to end my woes. I have no problem going into fullscreen mode by doing a Application.application.stage.displayState = StageDisplayState.FULL_SCREEN;, but the rest of the content just sits there in the top, left corner at it's original size. All right, says I, I'll just do a stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.SHOW_ALL and make it figure out how to pull this off. And it looks like it does. Except that when you mouse over the individual checkboxes and buttons and various components, they all fidget slightly. Just a slight jump up or down as they resize...on mouse over. Well, this is frustrating, but bearable. I can always just invoke invalidateSize() explicitly for all of them. But for the comboboxes. The ones at the bottom have their menus go off the bottom of the screen, and when I pop out of fullscreen mode, their drop downs cut off half way. I have no idea how to fix that. Can someone step in here, and put me out of my misery? • Taking video from video camera and displaying it with MPMoviePlayerController IPhone SDK

  Has anyone tried taking a video from the camera and then using the video player provided to play it? When you take the video in portrait mode, sometimes the movie will play (when the player puts it in landscape mode) and when it puts it in portrait mode you cannot view the movie all you hear is sound,sometimes in landscape mode is flickers and does not play right, has anyone encountered this and found a way to fix it?   I have a Solaris on a AMD- uname -a gives OS Solaris 10 x86_64 (SunOS goldtpus34 5.10 Generic_144489-11 I wanted to find whether it has a 32bit or 64 bit kernel so I did /usr/bin/isainfo -k it says amd64 but when i do file /sbin/init it says ELF 32-bit LSB executable 80386 Version 1, dynamically linked, stripped Also if I do file it says ELF 64-bit LSB executable AMD64 Version 1 [SSE2 SSE FXSR FPU], dynamically linked, not stripped So is it possible to have a Kernel working in 64bit mode but System utils/process spawner(init) in 32bit mode. I am confused. How to accurately get if the OS Kernel is in 64/32 bit mode on Solaris and on Linux?

  Hi, I have a C#-application running on Windows 7. I am using Watin to test some flash and quicktime movies in Internet Explorer. I am running in x64 mode due to some memory limitations I encountered in x86-mode. So I run my application which uses Watin, which starts MSIE. Watin starts the 64-bit version of MSIE. So far so good. The problem is, flash and quicktime do not seem to work in MSIE 64-bit, so testing playing of movies will not work. What must be done to run my C# application in 64-bit mode but to get Watin to run MSIE in 32-bit mode?

  hi we lately purchase few dell servers all of them from Rxxx series couple of R410 and R710 the OS we used on those servers is: CentOS 5.4 we're getting very weird error messages and we lost network connectivity couple of times (restarting the network interface was needed to fix it) the messages we're getting are: Message from syslogd@ at Wed Nov 18 12:07:08 2009 ... servername kernel: Uhhuh. • On boot firmware request for intel GMA 3100 chipset timing out

  I am currently in the process of installing a Gentoo linux box with a Vanilla 2.6.29-r5 kernel with gentoo-xen-kernel patches in order to run the Xen Hypervisor. After rebooting with the new kernel, the booting process seemed to hang on: [ 0.863005] platform microcode: firmware: requesting intel-ucode/06-0f-07 [ 60.863442] Microcode Update Driver: v2.00-xen <[email protected]>, Peter Oruba Apparently the firmware request times out after 60 seconds (/sys/class/firmware/timeout) and booting just continues. I have done some research and have found that on RHEL-4 this problem was related to the mount of /sys changed and the firmware.agent hotplug script couldn't parse the line correctly. However I am having some difficulty tracking down how to fix this on Gentoo. Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks

• Error with Ajax.Beginform on ASP.NET MVC Page

  Hi I am using Ajaxy Call to load the partial view. It is working fine in Firefox and IE without in Debug Mode. • USB resets with Ubuntu 9.10

  Since the upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 I have issues with getting USB device resets on my Maxtor OneTouch USB harddrive: Nov 9 20:54:37 localhost kernel: [32459.100021] usb 2-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 Nov 9 21:54:37 localhost kernel: [36059.100017] usb 2-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 Nov 9 23:24:37 localhost kernel: [41459.112025] usb 2-2: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 The device itself continues to work fine, the resets however wake the device out of its sleep state and thus cause it to spin up, which is very annoying. Interestingly, as the log shows, the resets happen at pretty regular intervals (i.e. one hour or half an hour), not randomly. An USB card reader seems to have the same issues, while another USB harddrive from a different manufactor works fine on the same PC. What could be causing this and how could I fix it?
