  • Difference in fans on Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04

    - by Timo
I have bought a Hp Pavilion DV7 with Core i7 CPU and installed Ubuntu 12.04 on dual boot with Windows 7 alongside. Apart from the difference in battery life (although that's fixed with Jupiter), I have another problem with the fans. On Windows my fans work perfectly and the laptop is cool, but it seems to overheat in Ubuntu. It becomes quite hot and it looks like my fans are not working under Ubuntu. I think I'm having the same problem as How can I keep the cpu temp low?, but since I cannot comment because of the lack of reputation (?), I post the question as a new thread. I think the result of the overheating is that my keyboard doesn't seem to follow when I start typing a long text. It just freezes and types the last letter multiple times. For example: when I type the word freezes, it shows freeeee so the zes changed into eee...

  • How to Use Windows 8's Storage Spaces to Mirror & Combine Drives

    - by Chris Hoffman
“Storage Spaces” is a new feature in Windows 8 that can combine multiple hard drives into a single virtual drive. It can mirror data across multiple drives for redundancy or combine multiple physical drives into a single pool of storage. You can even create pools of storage larger than the amount of physical storage space you have available. When the physical storage fills up, you can plug in another drive and take advantage of it with no additional configuration required. Storage Spaces is similar to RAID or LVM on Linux. • Antivirus Poses as Windows Security Alert, March Patch

The campaign's attacks are said to begin when a Web user attempts to visit a WordPress blogger's site. Instead of seeing the intended website, the user is redirected to a site hosting the rogue antivirus. The blogger will see that user's traffic, however, even though they never get to see any actual content. The site performs a phony scan on the user's computer and displays what appear to be existing Trojans found on the computer. In an attempt to look authentic, the rogue antivirus software carries the appearance of a typical Windows Explorer window and also employs a Windows Security Ale...

  • How To Force Windows Applications to Use a Specific CPU

    - by Taylor Gibb
Channing a process’s affinity means that you limit the application to only run on certain logical processors, which can come in terribly handy if you have an application that is hogging all the CPU. Here’s how to choose the processor for a running application. We’ve previously written about how to create a shortcut that forces an application to use a specific CPU, but this is a way to change it on the fly. Note: For the most part we do not recommend you changing these settings, and to rather let Windows manage them. • Is there any text editor for windows which can save files with code highlight for viewing

    - by user1713836
I want some software for Windows where I can save code snippets and other daily usable commands in one file. Everyday I find some small code snippets which I want to save in a single file. Just like we have code snippet savers online, I want something offline on Windows, basically with all the features Microsoft Word has, but with code highlight. It should be lightweight like Notepad++. I mean if I select the code and then press some button, it should change the color according to the language. Currently I use Notepad++, but in it, I can't select small code snippets on one page. It either highlights the entire file or nothing.

  • Backup Windows files using Ubuntu - Unable to find Win partition

    - by Siva
I am using a Dell laptop with Windows 7, all of a sudden the HDD is not recognized by Win7. I wanted to backup the data in Win, so I made a Ubuntu 12.04.1 Live CD, and booted from it. I am using Ubuntu without installing it in my laptop. My problem is that I don’t see the Windows partitions in Ubuntu 12.04.1, b’cos of which I am unable to backup the data. Any suggestion in this regard would be very helpful.. PS: I checked the SMART status of the HDD it says 2 Bad sectors, when I attempted an extended Self-Test, I get a Read Failed message, though the Short test goes through fine. Thank You, Siva

  • Partitioning Windows 7 so I can use ubuntu

    - by thommo1919
I have been recording happily using Audacity for many years but after upgrading to Windows 7, the latency has meant that recording music is impossible. My mate suggested partitioning my hard drive, installing ubuntu on it and then using this alongside Windows. He reckons I can use music recording software then on the partitioned Ubuntu drive without the latency problems. A few questions: a) Is my mate correct? b) How do I go about doing the partition and installing? c) What music recording software would you recommend? Many many thanks to anyone who can help me.

  • Can't access Ubuntu's shared folders from Windows 7

    - by endolith
In Ubuntu Maverick, I've shared some folders using the Nautilus "Sharing Options" GUI. I can see them from Windows 7, but when I try to access them (from Windows) it asks for a username and password. No matter what I enter, it won't let me in. How do I configure this to share normally? Update: I've found that some of the shared folders let me in, but others don't. Of the ones that do, some of their subfolders do, others don't, etc. How can I investigate what's causing this?

  • How to access network folders from within windows 7 virtualbox

    - by musher
At work we have fileshare storages accessible via the network. I'm not super familiar with this kind of networking, so I'm not 100% sure how to word this question/give enough details right away so please ask for any clarifications. That being said: Host: Xubuntu 14.04 Guest: Windows 7 enterprise Via thunar I can access these network drives fine by going to Browse Network > Windows Network > Server I want to use The name given in the address bar is: smb://SERVER-NAME So my question now, is how do I go about accessing these folders via my win 7 machine in virtualbox? I've searched but all I get is people who can't figure out shared folders between host/guest (which I've got working)

  • Understanding Data Binding for Windows Phone 7

    - by nikhil
I want to develop a simple app for the Windows Phone 7 platform. It's basically a vocabulary based game that involves the user moving word tiles from one area to another to score points. I want to know what is the best way of tying the UI to the game's backend? I saw the Windows Phone 7 jumpstart videos, there they touch up on Data Binding but don't really go into any depth. I'm a newbie and don't have any experience with designing the architecture for a phone app, It'd be great if someone could explain what steps I should be taking or guide me to a resource from where I could learn more.

  • How to Tweak the Low Battery Action On Your Windows 7 Laptop

    - by The Geek
If you’ve got a netbook with really great battery life, you’ll probably still have loads of time left even with only 10% of the battery remaining. Here’s how to tweak the settings so it alerts you or goes into sleep mode at a more reasonable time. Note: obviously if you don’t have a great battery in your laptop, you should probably be careful with these settings or you might lose data. • Simulating Smartphones on PC with Unity

    - by Cengiz Frostclaw
I want to make a game that depends on the phone orientation (changing shoot direction with tilt), however I need to test this on PC. So is there any tool I can use to simulate the orientation of the phone with mouse or keyboard of my PC? Something like joysticks on the screen. Thanks for any help! Edit : Thanks to @jhocking for his suggestion of Unity Remote. I, however still can accept a solution with using only PC, since I'm afraid of shortening my phone's battery life, for some reason.

  • Ubuntu boot is slower than Windows 7

    - by Alex Bixel
One of the reasons I installed Ubuntu (Wubi installer) was for a supposedly quick boot time. My boot time with Windows 7 is about 20-25 seconds, while my boot with Ubuntu is 30-40. I judged the boot times from the time after I selected the operating system on the initial selection menu and the grub menu, respectively. This is even after following all sorts of online guides to improve it. I've done driver profiling (and yes, I remembered to remove the "profile" edit in the grub file afterwards), I've cut a fair few startup programs out, and I've installed the preload package. But I'm still getting startup rates phenomenally slower than Windows 7. Any help here?

  • Switching windows behavior in Ubuntu

    - by Leonid
Ubuntu supports a shortcut to switch windows Ctrl+Tab, but it allows you to move through apps in one direction only. Direction depends on whether initially Ctrl+Tab or Ctrl+Shift+Tab was pressed. Ctrl+Tab will move forwards, but pressing Shift while moving forward doesn't change the direction, it still goes forwards unlike Windows default behaviour. Ctrl+Shift+Tab will move backwards, but if Shift is released while moving backwards the menu will disappear. Is there a way to configure Ubuntu so that you could go backwards and forwards without running the menu twice?

  • How to create Windows XP LiveUSB using Ubuntu to replace it

    - by Orion Clark
I am using an Acer Aspire One netbook with no CD-disk drive, and would like to uninstall Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and install Windows XP in its place. The problem here is that I can't seem to find a program that can put the windows boot files on a USB drive from an ISO file. I have Ubuntu fully installed and have tried using unetbootin. When I tried booting from unetbootin I got a screen with a blue box that had the word "default" in it highlighted. underneath the box there was a countdown that said "will boot from default in 10" after the countdown finished the number would revert to ten and nothing would happen. Can someone tell me another program that would be useful for this please?

  • 6 Start Menu Replacements for Windows 8

    - by Chris Hoffman
Want a Start menu on your Windows 8 desktop? While Microsoft no longer includes the Start button, opting instead for a click in a hidden corner and a new Start screen, there are quite a few Start menu replacements you can choose from. You can try living without the Start button and customizing your Start screen – it’s very possible to get by without the Start button and some people seem to prefer the new interface – but you have a choice. Many of these tools also allow you to boot directly to the desktop and hide the charms and app switcher that appear when you move your cursor to the corners of the screen, giving you a more traditional desktop experience. • Can I hook my xbox up to my Ubuntu PC

    - by Anonymous John
My old xbox 360 won't eject disks, it makes a sound, but won't open. I want to play games, so I think I could hook it up to my PC running Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit and maybe I could use my PC's DVD drive. Can this work at all, or am I just crazy? There is an HDMI port on the back of my graphics card. If I can't do that, is there any software for Ubuntu that can rip the game off of a CD and put it on a flash drive? I have heard xbmcbuntu works great for gaming, but it doesn't work with my PC.

  • Dual boot problem - Ubuntu windows 7

    - by Benoit Roberge
I've been using Ubuntu for a while on my laptop. Recently, I decided to install Ubuntu on my main desktop PC (dual boot with windows 7). I downloaded the Ubuntu installer for windows and installed it (it's now showing Ubuntu in the installed software in my W7 control panel). However, when I tried to boot Ubuntu, after the boot loader and the login screen, my screen splitted in half. I was not able to see the icons and the launcher. I was also not able to do anything. I uninstalled Ubuntu and tried again twice. Same thing/results. Then, I created a partition in W7 and installed Ubuntu on it. Unfortunately, it's doing the same thing. I never saw something like this. Any idea??? Thanks for your help and support.

  • How To Extract Individual Files From a Windows 7 System Image Backup

    - by Chris Hoffman
Windows 7’s backup control panel has the ability to create full system image backups. While Windows says you can’t restore individual files from these backups, there’s a way to browse the contents of a system image and extract individual files. System image backups are meant for restoring an entire system. If you want to easily restore individual files, you should use another type of backup – but you don’t have to restore an entire system image to get a few important files back. • Installing Ubuntu 12.10 on new computer with Windows 8

    - by rft183
I recently purchased a new HP computer (P6-2330) with Windows 8. I have tried unsuccessfully to install Ubuntu 12.10 64bit alongside Windows 8. The computer is UEFI with Secure Boot enabled. I've tried following the instruction at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI. I am able to get the GRUB menu to show up. However, as soon as I press Enter on either Try Ubuntu or Install Ubuntu, the screen goes blank. Nothing works at all, not even the Num Lock or Caps Lock keys on the keyboard. I have to use the power button to restart the computer. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get Ubuntu installed? To clarify, I have actually tried installing using both a USB stick and a DVD. The USB stick gave a blank screen, while the DVD gave the error message "Empty Security Header" after pressing Enter at the GRUB screen.
