• Trackpad Drag lock pissing me off with Windows 7

  This is driving me insane and I've scowered the web for two days trying to fix this. I just picked up an Apple Magic Trackpad to be used exclusively on a Windows 7 PC (not apple with bootcamp). I found a nice driver that got it working right away, but when I'm moving the cursor around the screen, often it will begin "highlighting" text, or picking up and dragging things I don't want it to. I looked in the "regedit" where people are saying there is binary that can be changed, however the driver I installed doesn't use the binary being suggested. Can anyone suggest a better driver for my situation or a way to disable the drag lock that is driving me so nuts? I don't mind not being able to lift my finger when dragging, it's a far better compromise than having the insane feature.

• Backing up data in an encrypted way

  I have the following use case: There's some data from my PC I want to periodically back-up online I own some hosting, so I want to use that for the backups, don't want to pay to another backup service I want to encrypt my data locally prior to moving it to the server I have no problem writing scripts to automate the process (say, periodically generate the backup and upload by FTP to my server), but my main question is about step 3 - the encryption: which way is recommended to encrypt my files (say, collected into a .ZIP) prior to uploading to the server? P.S. TrueCrypt seems popular but it's not quite what I'm looking for, since I don't want the files to be constantly encrypted here on my PC.

• Java Convert ColorSpace of BufferedImage to CS_GRAY without using ConvertColorOp

  I know its possible to convert an image to CS_GRAY using public static BufferedImage getGrayBufferedImage(BufferedImage image) { BufferedImageOp op = new ColorConvertOp(ColorSpace .getInstance(ColorSpace.CS_GRAY), null); BufferedImage sourceImgGray = op.filter(image, null); return sourceImgGray; } however, this is a chokepoint of my entire program. I need to do this often, on 800x600 pixel images and takes about 200-300ms for this operation to complete, on average. I know I can do this alot faster by using one for loop to loop through the image data and set it right away. The code above on the other hand constructs a brand new 800x600 BufferedImage that is gray scale. I would rather just transform the image I pass in. Does any one know how to do this with a for loop and given that the image is RGB color space?

• Installing SSL certs with nginx on Amazon EC2

  I finally got a cert from an authority and am struggling to get things working. I've created the appropriate combined certificate (personal + intermediate + root) and nginx is pointing to it. I got an elastic IP and connected it to my EC2 instance. My DNS records point to that IP. But when I point the browser to the hostname, I get the standard "Connection Untrusted" bit, with ssl_error_bad_cert_domain. Port 443 is open - I can get to the site over https if I ignore the warning. Weird thing is, under technical details, it lists the domain I tried to access as valid! When I try and diagnose with ssl testing sites, they don't even detect a certificate! What am I missing here? domain is yanlj.coinculture.info. Note I've got coinculture.info running on a home server without a dedicated IP and have the same problem, but I'll be moving that to the same EC2 instance as soon as I figure this thing out. I thought the elastic IP would solve things but it hasn't

• Backup and restore MySQL database without system access

  Hi guys, I am trying to move a database from 1 provider to another, the problem is that I don't have system access at either end (ie, no ssh), so I cannot use a mysqldump. I have already tried using MySQL Administrator, the backup took about 45 minutes, but when it came to restoring it was moving at a snails pace, and estimating 12+ hours. This is a live app so I need to keep the downtime to an absolute minimum. The database consists of 35 tables, a mixture of MyISAM and InnoDB, the whole thing comes to about 4.4GB. The source and destination databases are both running on very powerful servers. Any suggestions on a quick way of doing this will be gratefully received. Thanks

• Parsing a CSV File to a Rails Database

  G'day guys, I'm using fasterCSV and a rake script to parse a csv with about 30 columns into my rails db for a 'Trade' item. The script works fine when all of the values are set to strings, but when I change it to a decimal, int or other value, everything goes to hell. Wondering if fasterCSV has built in int etc parsing or whether I'll have to manage these within my model. Basically, I'm given a giant amount of trades data, need to import it, and then need to provide feedback with say the average trade volume, the times, etc. I understand I can do that all with the wonderful records provided to me by activeRecord but wondered if there was an easier way to populate a rather large Database with a given CSV? Several of the fields don't have values for certain rows, fasterCSV seems to work perfectly when they're all strings, but not when I try to get decimal or other.

• SQL Server backup/restore error: The Media Family on Device is Incorrectly Formed.

  Basically, I'm having this issue: http://www.sqlcoffee.com/Troubleshooting047.htm What I'm doing is running a script I found online (http://pastebin.com/3n0ZfybL) to do a full backup, then rar'ing up the file and moving it to my computer. The CRC of the backup file inside the rar is correct on both computers, so there is no problem with data being corrupted when I transfer it. But then I go and try to restore the database on my dev computer here and I get the errors "sql server cannot process this media family" ... "msg 3013". Why is this happening? I'd test out the backup on the server I'm getting it from, but it's a production server.

• MySQL indexes: how do they work?

  I'm a complete newbie with MySQL indexes. I have several MyISAM tables on MySQL 5.0x having utf8 charsets and collations with 100k+ records each. The primary keys are generally integer. Many columns on each table may have duplicate values. I need to quickly count, sum, average, or otherwise perform custom calculations on any number of fields in each table or joined on any number of others. I found this page giving an overview of MySQL index usage: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/mysql-indexes.html, but I'm still not sure I'm using indexes right. Just when I think I've made the perfect index out of a collection of fields I want to calculate against, I get the "index must be under 1000 bytes" error. Can anyone explain how to most efficiently create and use indexes to speed up queries? Caveat: upgrading Mysql is not possible in this case. Using Navicat Light for db administration, but this app isn't required.

• psloggedon timeout question.

  Hi guys, I have a list of machine names from my network that I have put in a batchfile to run through the list and show me who is logged onto each. psloggedon \machineA psloggedon \machineB psloggedon \machineC psloggedon \machineD psloggedon \machineE psloggedon \machineF Psloggedon works fine, however when it hits a machine that isnt actually on the network, it hangs for a good 30 - 60 seconds before moving onto the next machine...I was just wondering if there was any way to speed this up so that if it hits a machine that isnt on the network, it moves onto the next machine in the list much quicker. I have read in other places that this could be possible by adding a ping -n loop into the command but im not sure how to get that to work? any ideas guys? Many thanks in advance. Jimmy

This means that there do not have to be any objects at the destination, but if there are then the number of objects must lie within the bounds specified. What exactly does "orthogonal" mean? I bet it's just a fancy soundig nerd-style word for something that could be expressed a lot easier to understand for average people ;) From wikipedia: In mathematics, two vectors are orthogonal if they are perpendicular, i.e., they form a right angle.   We have an e-mail account for support purposes which is tended to by multiple members of the team. When answering a support e-mail we obviously choose the support account as sender. Still, the answer is not stored in the support account's Sent Items folder, but in the Sent Items of the person actually answering. This behavior, which seems to be by design, prevents others from gaining access to the entire conversation and potentially causes multiple answers. I am looking for an automated way of moving e-mails sent on behalf of someone else to that person's Sent Items folder. I tried to create a rule for this but could not find the right setting.

A full example (using a very small file!) is: 1) my file contains the following bits 000011110000111 2) I need a procedure to QUICKLY convert it to 0F0F 3) I will call a sql server function passing 0x0F0F as parameter The problem is that I have large files (up to 100MB, even if average file size is 100KB files are possible), so I need the fastest way to do this. • Set a row to follow my cursor anywhere in Calc

  How do I make a whole row follow wherever I am in the Calc document when I scroll down/up? I'm looking for something that keeps a row from moving, or to make it stay put. This is so that when I want to see other rows, this one locked row will stay in place and allow me to refer back to it on screen without having to scroll all the way back up to the top of the document.   Hi, I'm working on a Django project where I need to provide a lot of different visualizations on the same data (for example average of a value for each month, for each year / for a location, etc...). I have been using an OLAP database once in college, and I thought that it would fit my needs, but it appears that it is much too heavy for what I need. Actually the volume of data is not very big, so I don't need any optimization, just a way to present different visualizations of the same data without having to write 1000 times the same code. So, to recap, I need a python library: to emulate a multidimensional database (OLAP style would be nice because I think it is quite convenient : star structure, and everything) non-intrusive, because I can't modify anything on the existing MySQL database easy-to-use, because otherwise there's no point in replacing some overhead by another.

The problem is that where I work is moving to more security. We will need to stick a card into a slot to log into our PCs. They bought a bunch of new keyboards with these slots built in. • Presentation software requires admin rights to install - any way to remove this requirement?

  I have some wireless presentation software which I use in a meeting room in order to allow end users to hold presentations here and wirelessly have their laptop screens showing on the TV on the wall. Unfortunately the .exe file requires admin rights to install therefore requiring that either the user requests temporary admin rights beforehand, I install it using my admin account or that we use a VGA/HDMI cable. Is there a way to remove the admin right requirement from a .exe or a .msi file so that it can be installed freely by any user? We are using XP for now but will be moving to 7 soon. Thanks James

• Problem with usb wireless mouse

  Recently I have started having problems with my wireless mouse (Wireless Optical Mouse MI-4910D). Sometimes when I start my PC or during a game the pointer/arrow stops moving. When the PC boots the pointer is locked in the center of the screen. If I'm lucky it helps to change the USB wireless adapter from port 1 to port 2 but sometimes this trick doesn't work and I have to restart my PC to get the mouse to work again. Like you can see in the product web page this mouse don't have a driver but only a tool to solve some problems. • How to recover C:\Users folder

  Today I was moving C:\Users to another partition using symlink method. I had the great idea of making the symlink from C:\Users = U:\, instead of C:\Users = U:\Users. Sadly, I've deleted the original "Users" folder and now, when I try to login, it says that The User Profile Service failed the logon. Maybe I'm wrong, but this is because the root directory of user profiles isn't the system one, so now when I create C:\Users, I can't log into Windows and I get the above error message. How can create a new C:\Users directory and workaround the problem? Thank you in advance!

• PC boots on then off & 30 sec. later on again, it wiil shut off on itself mostly in idle or just unexpecticly

  This problem started w/ my sons desktop, it would just shut off after a bit of work or stay on for a long time & to get it to unfreeze is to cold boot it, i put a new HDD in & I still have the same issue, RAM is good power supply fan is moving quite as well as all the rest of the fans it has stayed fairly dust free, i'm at a loss ,I have defaulted all the factory settings changed battery & ungraded to a new OS. I still have the same problem. the power light stays on after it has shut down & when upon starting it goes straight to safe mode option page, I start in last good config. reboots again takes 30 sec. to boot & will work again for a while, the only other thing I haven't tried was a graphic card replace, i'm onboard video now & have been.

We're really happy with its stability and we aren't interested in moving over to non-core. We need to get either SVN or GIT installed on the aforementioned box in the shortest amount of steps. We know the advantages/disadvantages of both systems. That being said, we don't care which one we use, we're just are looking for the path of least resistance on setting up a repository on a machine running R2 core.

• Do virtual machines perform better on the host HDD or USB drive?

  The question I'm asking is kind of general, and I'll give more specifics about my specific setup. Here's the main question though: Do virtual machines generally perform better on the host HDD or is it better to operate them from an external disk? My specific setup: A Macbook Pro with a nearly full internal SATA drive that spins at 7200. On this system I'm running large programs like Photoshop and some other RAM-intense applications. I've dedicated 2 of my 8 gigs of RAM to my VMware Fusion virtual machine, which runs Windows 7 and Visual Studio, sits on the same drive. When that thing boots up, my system really starts crawling. I have an external USB (specifics of that drive are here) which I'm thinking about moving the VM to. Obviously a USB drive is slower than my internal HDD, but maybe having two operating systems using the same disk is WORSE than putting one of them on a separate (albiet slower) disk. This a bad idea?

  I am planning on moving my static files to Google's App Engine. I was wondering if this is a good idea to do. I have read that is it possible that Google will cache your files on multiple locations, which is a good thing in my opinion. The setup should also be quite easy in eclipse with the GAE plugins. But i still have my doubts on the performance of this. Is the setup of App Engine optimized for serving static content. Now I have Nginx server my static content, will App Engine perform the same way. Are there any other ups or downs using this method?

• mysql single database relocation

  I would like to know if it's possible to operate different databases on different filesystem locations. Background: we are a hosting service, which hosts mysql, web, and smtp to it's customer, but all our services (sql, smtp, http) are located in a different place. We are going to assign a single logical volume to a customer, which will accommodate the customer's mailing, weppages and (hopefully) sql database. Web pages and mailing are already covered, but I am not able to find a configuration setting which would enable me to specify the location of a database (the directory where mysql stores the DB). Let me please highlight, the target here is to relocate different databases to different locations in the filesystem, not moving them from a single place to an another (single) place. Also please do not bother answering with soft and hard symbolic links. ;) Thanks
