  • Programming tests: are they relevant?

    Do online programming tests have any value (except for providing an evidence to potential employers) in terms of evaluating your knowledge, or a they too broad or too narrow in general? For examples, brainbench.com and similar websites. From my experience I have never found myself scoring particularly high, although I have many years of commercial experience and is doing great at work. These tests mostly refer to things I have never worked with (WebForms or ADO .Net, who works with ADO .Net directly anyway?), yet these tests claim to be C# tests. If you were hiring a programmer, would you consider online tests as an evidence of real skill?

  • What part of a computer can you "skimp" on?

    So I'm thinking about building myself a new rig. I want to go for value more than anything, but I also want to get myself a nice enough setup that I can play the latest games considerably well. Last time I built a computer I skimped on the power supply and it bit me big time later on. I know the ideal answer is "don't skimp on anything", but are there are any parts of a computer you can do relatively well without having a particularly "good" component?

  • Setting up gcov in Xcode 3.1

    I'm trying to setup my Xcode project to be instrumented with gcov so I can determine the code coverage of my unit tests. All of the documentation I find online talks about settings that I don't find in Xcode 3.1, though. An example: To work with Coverstory, first you need to set up your target to work with gcov. This requires turning on "Instrument Program Flow", "Generate Test Coverage Files" and linking with the gcov library. (Using Coverstory) The closest thing I can find to "Instrument Program Flow" and "Generate Test Coverage Files" in my build settings is "Generate Profiling Code", which doesn't appear to do what I want it to do. Am I looking in the wrong place for these settings or are all of the examples I'm finding online stale?

  • Filling data in FormView from different tables

    Hi, I am using a FormView in an online quiz page for displaying the questions and RadioButtons (for answers) http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2438219/online-quiz-using-asp-dot-net Now, I need to pick the questions according to a TestID and a particular Set of that Test. The testid and the set_number would be passed using Session variables. I'm having 3 testIDs and 3 Sets per TestID and, thus, am using 9 tables to store the Questions, the Options and the correct answer. I need help on how to set the FormView so that it extracts the questions from a particular table only. Do I need to use a StoredProcedure ? If yes, how? PS: If I use only one table to store all the questions from each Set and for each TestID, I can do that, but I'd prefer using separate tables.

  • Is there a way to pass a custom type from C# to Oracle using System.Data.OracleClient?

    I was searching online for a solution to passing a string array to a stored procedure in Oracle. The "easy" but messy way was using a comma delimited string. I had found a sample based on which I created my own type of TABLE of VARCHAR2(200). I understood that I could use a constructor created "behind-the-scenes" by Oracle to give a list of values that would, in the PL/SQL, be treated as a TABLE I could iterate through. But when I got to the C# I saw that there is no way for me to create an OracleParameter object that would allow me to use this implicit constructor. All the samples I'm finding online for now are dealing with Oracle Data Adapter, none say anything about System.Data.OracleClient. Is there a way to achieve this?

  • Sending data remotely from iPhone native apps to Rails apps

    Dear all, I have decided to develop a native iPhone apps as a compliment to our webapps. Now I am wondering what are my options to send data remotely from the iPhone apps - since the database is online - to our online database. What I can think of on top of my head - since I come from web dev background - is JSON. My webapps is built using Rails, so I figure it would not be difficult to accept JSON request from the iPhone apps. But the next question is, is it difficult to send JSON data remotely from the iPhone apps? If JSON is not recommendable, what are my other options? Thank you so much for the assistance. She is currently using Chrome and IE, and I have never done that before, even on FF. I would prefer a solution that is simple and does not require additional applications. Although it seems unlikely, is there a solution that works for all browsers (i.e. do it once and I never have to fix it for a new browser)? Thanks.

    I have a bit of free time and lots of enthusiasm for software and the web. I want to make a start-up, to sell kind of product or online service, but I'm having a hard time coming up with business ideas that haven't already been implemented. For example, I thought of making an e-ordering website for ordering food from restaurants online. Good thing I typed it into Google, because the market is already full of hundreds of websites doing the same thing and competing heavily. The same thing has happened with so many other business ideas I've become excited and passionate about - they're all taken. What's your response to this? Do you agree that all the good ideas seem to be taken? Or do you think there is room for new businesses, and that I'm just not thinking (or looking) hard enough? Have you ever tried idea after idea, only to find that it was already being done, and you had to move onto something else?

  • What's the Minimum System Spec Recommended For Developer Laptop

    I'll be regularly running Visual Studio 2010 Professional, SQLServer Express, Office and at least 1 virtual environment running a Linux Distro. I want the machine to be snappy and responsive even when doing a reasonable amount of Development work. I want to spend what it takes for this, but I don't want to go overboard spending more than I need to. I won't be playing many games or graphics processing so i won't need a monster of a machine.     Recently I replaced the videocard in my PC for a newer, faster one. All games work perfectly but I get random system crashes and reboots. This happens even when the system is almost idle (browsing, playing music). It never happened with the old card. All drivers are up-to-date. Is it possible that the power supply is not powerful enough for the new card?

  • Source control on internet i.e. no private networks.

    Me and my friend are in the process of starting a small project and want to implement a source control. Now both are located in different cities and can communicate using internet for file sharing etc. I need an online hosting solution or any way where i can maintain the source code repository for both of us to check in/out. As of now we want to maintain it as private project. Does sourceforge allow hosting projects which would not be opensource? One option i was thinking, to obtain a static IP form ISP and host the repository.But that mean my system needs to be online when my friend wants to checkin/out or do some diff with old version code. Secondly, would SVN or git be a better choice in such a situation. I have no experience in git/mercurial as of now.

    I am attempting to tune some stored procedures and have a question on indexes. I have used the tuning advisor and they recommended two indexes, both for the same table. The issue is one index is for one column and the other is for multiple columns, of which it includes the same column from the first. My question is why and what is the difference?     I am working on an online portal, where researchers can upload their research papers. One requirement is, that all PDFs are stored in PDF/A-format. As I can't rely on the users to generate PDF/A conforming documents, I need a tool to check and convert standard PDFs into PDF/A format. What is the best tool you know of? Price Quality Speed Available APIs Open-source tools would be prefered, but a search revealed none. iText can create PDF/a, but converting isn't easy to do, as you have to read every page and copy it to a new document, losing all bookmarks and annotations in this process. (At least as far as I know, if you know of an easy solution, let me know). APIs should be available for either PHP, Java or a command-line-tool should be provided. Please do not list either GUI-only or Online-only solutions.

  • Windows 7 120 GB disc drive C full

    I have windows 7 and my disc drive has a capacity of 120 GB. From one day to another it tells me that my disc C is full in a red bar but I dont have many programs installed. I deleted all of my videos, games, music, pictures, etc and I was able to free up 30 GB. I ran the disk cleaner and emptied the TEMP folder and garbage can but it still shows a 70GB used. Can I get some help from the experts PLEASE!!!

  • Is there a Hypercam for mac?

  • Real-time offline folder-to-folder backup application needed (Windows)

    I recently started using Intel Matrix Storage RAID solution that allowed me to use my 5 1TB drives for two RAID volumes. First one a 1TB RAID 0 striped across all 5 drives and second one a RAID 5 across the rest of the free space on all drives (around 2.85TB usable space). The RAID 0 I use for OS, applications and games while the RAID 5 I use as a more-permanent type storage (photos, etc). Now I do realize that running the OS and applications on RAID 0 across 5 drives is very dangerous, which is what brings up the following question. Is there a reliable freeware realtime backup application that can backup a set of folders from one drive to another drive (no online backups needed)? I've already tried a few (Mozy, Yadis, Comodo Backup, GFI Backup, Idoo, Crash Plan) but none meet my requirements: Low CPU and RAM usage. Realtime Backups - as soon as a file is modified in the source folder, it is added to the backup queue which will be processed with the lowest priority when the CPU is idle. This backup queue should persist in cases of computer restarts (ie: the source and destination folders should always have the same set of files, except for the ones waiting in the backup queue). Incremental Backups - if only 10 bytes changed in a 1GB file, the app should only copy those 10 new bytes. Ability to back up locked and opened files (some apps, like Yadis, can't back up critical files like browser favorites). Ability to run as a service (no need for any user to log-in to have the app started). Optional requirements: Compression of the destination into a well-known format (RAR, Zip) that can be directly read without the use of the application. Preset source folders (such as Browser Favorites, Game Saves, Application Settings, etc). The idea is to use RAID 0 array as "semi-persistent RAM-like" storage which in case of a failure can be quickly rebuilt by reinstalling the OS, apps and games and copying over the settings, saves, favorites from the RAID 5. I'm also thinking of taking this RAID 0 as RAM idea to the extreme with SSDs (as soon as we get some nice 6Gb/s SATA III SSDs out there), where a couple of SSDs chained in RAID 0 will work as yet another semi-persistent cache layer sitting between the RAM and the HD. I'm just hoping there already exists an application that satisfies these requirements... otherwise I'll have to write one myself, which I would prefer not to do.
