• Can EC2 instances be set up to come from different IP ranges?

  I need to run a web crawler and I want to do it from EC2 because I want the HTTP requests to come from different IP ranges so I don't get blocked. So I thought distributing this on EC2 instances might help, but I can't find any information about what the outbound IP range will be. I don't want to go to the trouble of figuring out the extra complexity of EC2 and distributed data, only to find that all the instances use the same address block and I get blocked by the server anyway. NOTE: This isn't for a DoS attack or anything. I'm trying to harvest data for a legitimate business purpose, I'm respecting robots.txt, and I'm only making one request per second, but the host is still shutting me down. Edit: Commenter Paul Dixon suggests that the act of blocking even my modest crawl indicates that the host doesn't want me to crawl them and therefore that I shouldn't do it (even assuming I can work around the blocking). Do people agree with this?

  I am a MySQL newbie, so sorry if this is a dumb question.. These are my tables. student table: SID (primary) student_name advisor (foreign key to faculty.facultyID) requested_advisor (foreign key to faculty.facultyID) faculty table: facultyID (primary key) advisor_name I want to query a table that shows everything in the student table, but I want advisor and requested_advisor to show up as names, not the ID numbers. so like it displays like this on the webpage: Student Name: Jane Smith SID: 860123456 Current Advisor: John Smith Requested advisor: James Smith not like this Student Name: Jane Smith SID: 860123456 Current Advisor: 1 Requested advisor: 2 SELECT student.student_name, SID, student_email, faculty.advisor_name FROM student INNER JOIN faculty ON student.advisor = faculty.facultyID; this comes out close, but I don't know how to get the requested_advisor to show up as a name.

It stores a names, a project, the week that they are storing the data for and hours spent on project. here is an example "James","Project5","15/05/2010","3" "Matt","Project1","01/05/2010","5" "Ellie","Project5","24/04/2010","1" "Ellie","Project2","10/05/2010","3" "Matt","Project3","03/05/2010","4" I need to print it on the form without quotes. There it should only show the name once and then just display projects under the name. I've looked tihs up and the split function seems interesting any help would be good.

• SQLAlchemy custom sorting algorithms when using SQL indexes

  Is it possible to write custom collation functions with indexes in SQLAlchemy? SQLite for example allows specifying the sorting function at a C level as sqlite3_create_collation(). An implementation of some of the Unicode collation algorithm has been provided by James Tauber here, which for example sorts all the "a"'s close together whether they have accents on them or not. Other examples of why this might be useful is for different alphabet orders (languages other than English) and sorting numeric values (sorting 10 after 9 rather than codepoint order.) Is this possible in SQLAlchemy? If not, is it supported by the pysqlite3 or MySQLdb modules, or for any other SQL database modules supported by python for that matter? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

• How can I get to the value of my WPF UserControl DependencyProperty from UI Automation Framework?

  Hi, I'm having trouble getting access to my WPF UserControl DependencyProperty values through the UI Automation Framework. I've used James McCaffreys article in MSDN as a starting point (Automating IO Tests in WPF Applications, MSDN March 2009), but I can only see properties etc in standard controls such as buttons. I'm assuming there's some Automation interface I have to implement on my UserControl, but what and how? I can already see my control fine e.g. in UISpy, but I can't see the dependency properties within it.   Hi, Hope my subject line was descriptive enough. Basically, I have a table called Students, and one called Absences. The Students table contains student information (Name, DOB, StudentID etc.), the Absences table contains any absences (Date, Reason, related by StudentID). I want to get a full list of the students, plus a count of their absences. Sample results would be: StudentName Absences ------------- ----------- Johnny 3 Mark 2 James 1 Anthony 0 Sharon 0 Can someone suggest a way I should tackle this problem?   Hi, I am using REXML to edit an xml file but have ran into difficulties with formatting. I found the following via google: REXML::Attribute.class_eval( %q^ def to_string %Q[#@expanded_name="#{to_s().gsub(/"/, '&quot;')}"] end ^ ) I also have a problem in that REXML is reformatting the document. are there ways to stop this?   While reading a book about JavaScript I stumbled across an example: var names = new Array("Paul","Catherine","Steve"); var ages = new Array(31,29,34); var concatArray; concatArray = names.concat(ages); My question is, why doesn't the variable concatArray need to be define as a new Array() in order to store the concatenated data for both arrays name and ages , but when I try to treat the concatArray as an array by adding another line of code "document.write(concatArray[0])", it works just like an array and shows me the data stored in the first element. I just wonder why I'm not declaring the concatArray as a new array, yet it still works as one.

  Hi All, I am planning to use Apache lucense in one of my projects, I want to index files based on the file properties (I won’t be indexing the data) and I want lucense to query the index so that I can quickly find list of files to based on the properties . E.g: give me all the files with access time greater than 10/10/2005 and access time less than 10/04/2010 and file created by james. Can i use Lucene for these kind of projects ? or i better of using windows search (the foor print is very heavy almost 5 MB :( ) and i have to bundling this as part of my application is seems to tough. Can you please suggest is there any better alternatives here?

  Hi, Is there a way in Eunit to test whether an exception has been thrown under certain cicumstances? Say I have a function sum like this: sum(N, M) when N > M -> throw({"start is bigger than end", N, M}); sum(N, M) when N =:= M -> N; sum(N, M) when N =< M -> N + sum(N + 1, M). • Algorithm to find a measurement of similarity between lists.

  Given that I have two lists that each contain a separate subset of a common superset, is there an algorithm to give me a similarity measurement? Example: A = { John, Mary, Kate, Peter } and B = { Peter, James, Mary, Kate } How similar are these two lists? Note that I do not know all elements of the common superset. Update: I was unclear and I have probably used the word 'set' in a sloppy fashion. My apologies. Clarification: Order is of importance. If identical elements occupy the same position in the list, we have the highest similarity for that element. The similarity decreased the farther apart the identical elements are. The similarity is even lower if the element only exists in one of the lists. I could even add the extra dimension that lower indices are of greater value, so a a[1] == b[1] is worth more than a[9] == b[9], but that is mainly cause I am curious.

  I was reading about the new concurrent collection classes in .NET 4 on James Michael Hare's blog, and the page talking about ConcurrentQueue<T> says: It’s still recommended, however, that for empty checks you call IsEmpty instead of comparing Count to zero. I'm curious - if there is a reason to use IsEmpty instead of comparing Count to 0, why does the class not internally check IsEmpty and return 0 before doing any of the expensive work to count? E.g.: public int Count { get { // Check IsEmpty so we can bail out quicker if (this.IsEmpty) return 0; // Rest of "expensive" counting code } } It seems strange to suggest this if it could be "fixed" so easily with no side-effects?

  Hi, For various reasons, i'm trying to write my own input keyboard. So far all is going well except that of creating the suggestions. I've found the latinIME algorithm, which is all good. However i'm having major difficulty working out how to load the dictionary in the first place. I've had a good look round the net, and found various suggestions, but no definitive answers, and i cant seem to get any of them to work.   I have data related as follows: A table of Houses A table of Boxes (with an FK back into Houses) A table of Things_in_boxes (with an FK back to Boxes) A table of Owners (with an FK back into Houses) In a nutshell, a House has many Boxes, and each Box has many Things in it. In addition, each House has many Owners. If I know two Owners (say Peter and Paul), how can I list all the Things that are in the Boxes that are in the Houses owned by these guys? Also, I'd like to master this SQL stuff. Can anyone recommend a good book/resource? (I'm using MySQL). Thanks!

So: John, Mark, James, Tyler and Joe are in a table 1( called round 1) The user selects the action that say to "move to next round" and those same instances that were chosen are now also in the table for "round 2".   I'm wondering about the current support there is in Ruby for semantic web technologies. Is there good RDF options? It seems that the last surveys done were circa 2007 ( http://paul-classic.stadig.name/2007/10/26/the-state-of-rdf-support-in-ruby-2007/ ). Is Redland's RDF wrappers the best way to go for RDF support - all the other projects mentioned in that aging article seem to be unsupported or dropped. Is Ruby perhaps a bad choice if one which to pursue projects pertaining to the semantic web?

  Hi, I cannot for the life of me get lists:keyfind to work as I expect in Erlang. I have the following eunit test: should_find_key_test() -> NewList = lists:keystore("key", 1, [], {"key", "value"}), Value = case lists:keyfind("key", 1, NewList) of false -> notfound; {_key, _value} -> _value end, ?debugVal(Value). Whenever I run this test I get the following error message: indextests:should_find_key_test (module 'indextests')...failed ::error:undef in function lists:keyfind/3 called as keyfind("key",1,[{"key","value"}]) in call from indextests:should_find_key_test/0 Can anyone see what I am doing wrong? • Learning OpenGL ES 1.x

  What is the quickest way to come up to speed on OpenGL ES 1.x? Let's assume I know nothing about OpenGL (which is not entirely true, but it's been a while since I last used OpenGL). I am most interested in learning this for iPhone-related development, but I'm interested in learning how it works on other platforms as well. I've found the book OpenGL ES 2.0 Programming Guide, but I am concerned that it might not be the best approach because it focuses on 2.0 rather than 1.x. My understanding is that 2.0 is not backwards-compatible with 1.x, so I may miss out on some important concepts. • Adding and altering multiple text items to a Canvas -- what approach?

  I am attempting to use a Canvas to create a simple Cad application. I have been able to get lines to draw as I want. For now the only other thing I need is text. The user should be able to edit the text in place. ?Is one of these better to use for this over the others? Rich Text TextBlock TextBox Label A more important question, though, is once I have chosen which class to use for implementation, how do I set and get the text value in code? Since the app is in essence a cad application, text will be added, deleted, and altered often, so I am not attempting to put these in XAML, but code-behind. That is why I am asking about how to do this in code. If the answer is "use X.SetValue()" (or that family of methods), then please tell me what I am supposed to do with the required DependencyProperty reference? TIA. Paul
