Does upgrading RAM causes increase in Graphic card's share?

I have asked this question on Ask Ubuntu, and I was suggested to Upgrade RAM from most voted answers. But I got a point about my graphics card. Since, I can upgrade RAM and not graphics card, Does upgrading RAM also cause graphics memory to increase. To clear the point: My specs are given below: Laptop : Lenovo 3000 Y410. (bought in 2008 October) RAM: 1 GB (DDR2) External Graphics (Dedicated): N/A Internal Graphics (Shared): 256 MB Graphics Chipset: Intel GMA X3100 My Question is: If I increase my RAM to 3 GB, will it increase graphics cards share of the Memory. In other word, If graphics card shares 256 MB in 1GB RAM, will it share more, when I upgrade the RAM into 2GB or more ? On my Ubuntu VPS, i have a mysql server running and a Glassfish 3.0.1 Application Server running. And I am having a hard to have my GF successfully ping the database. Here is my GF set up Assume: x.y.z.t is the ip of my VPS Resource Type: javax.sql.ConnectionPoolDataSource User: root DatabaseName: scholar Url: jdbc:mysql://x.y.z.t:3306/scholar URL: jdbc:mysql://x.y.z.t:3306/scholar Password: xxxx PortNumber: 3306 ServerName: x.y.z.t Inside my glassfish3/glassfish/lib, I have my mysql-connector-java-5.1.13-bin.jar Inside the database, table mysql here is the result of the query select User, Host from user; +------------------+-----------+ | User | Host | +------------------+-----------+ | root | 127.0.0.1 | | debian-sys-maint | localhost | | root | localhost | | root | yunaeyes | +------------------+-----------+ Now from my machine, if I try to connect to this db via mysql browser (mysql client software), well I cant. Well from the table above, seem like it only allow localhost to connect to this db. Keep in mind that both my db and my GF are on the same VPS. Please help

Unable to use Gmail in Thunderbird 3

Mozilla Thunderbird v.3.1.7 I am trying to setup Gmail, but none of the settings are working. I have tried every resource: Blogs, tutorials Instructions by Google Instructions by Thunderbird Questions here But, still its not working. My settings are as follows Server Settings Server Type: IMAP Mail server Server Name: imap.gmail.com Username: [email protected] Port: 993 Default: 993 Connection Security: SSL/TLS Authentication method: Encrypted password Outgoing server (SMTP) Server Name: smtp.gmail.com Port: 587 Default: 25 Connection Security: STARTTLS Authentication method: Encrypted password Username: [email protected] IMAP is enabled in my Gmail settings. ERROR: Connection to the server [email protected] timed out. I am behind a proxy server and I have configured those settings under: Thunderbird Preferences - Advanced - Network and Disk Space - Connection Settings - Manual Proxy Configuration The proxy configuration works, as when I created a Blogs and News feeds a/c, it was working properly and fetching the feeds for me. Bootstrapping in CloudFormation with Autoscale

My CloudFormation template creates an autoscale group and bootstrap it with utility script /opt/aws/bin/cfn-init. When I remove the bootstrap part out of my template the, autoscale get created without any problem, but I add it the CloudFormation Stack fails and add line in /var/log/cloud-init.log : Error: AutoScalingGroupName does not specify any metadata The line above appens right after the following command : /opt/aws/bin/cfn-init --verbose --configsets orderedConfig --region us-east-1 --stack AS15 --resource AutoScalingGroupName --access-key XXXXXXXXXXXXX --secret-key XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Digging a little bit deeper, in cfn-init I added the following lines the point where it exit: from pprint import pprint pprint(vars(detail)) and I get the following trace when running the previous cfn-init command : {'_description': None, '_lastUpdated': datetime.datetime(2012, 7, 12, 14, 52, 42), '_logicalResourceId': u'AutoScalingGroupName', '_metadata': None, '_physicalResourceId': u'AS15-AutoScalingGroupName-HNPOXXXXXXXX', '_resourceStatus': u'CREATE_COMPLETE', '_resourceStatusReason': None, '_resourceType': u'AWS::AutoScaling::AutoScalingGroup', '_stackId': u'arn:aws:cloudformation:us-east-1:XXXXXXXXXXXXX:stack/AS15/XXXXXXXX-cc30-11e1-XXXXXX-XXXXXXXXXX', '_stackName': u'AS15'} As you can see, the metadata field is empty and that's the reason why it fails to create the stack. Not able to access other machines on network

Hi I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise (32bit) on my laptop. For some time I'm not able to access other machines using \\192.168.xxx.xxx. I've installed VM Ware player on my machine few days back but I don't remember if it happened just after that or there is some other reason behind it. EDIT:- I've disabled VMWare Bridge Protocol but still no effect. Please help me. PS:- I've used both wireless and wired networks. Network sharing is enabled and I can ping other machines but cannot access network shares. I get following message: \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have acess permissions. The request is not supported. EDIT (2):- Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing, Folder sharing are all on.

Migrating XenServer VMs from Intel to AMD servers

I need to replace my XenServer 6.1 resource pool hardware. I currently run Intel hardware and I have to move to AMD hardware (corporate politics and budget stuff, blah blah blah). I have downtime available so I can use cold migration - live migration is not required. I will also have the new hardware (AMD) alongside the old hardware (Intel). The XenServer docs say there may be problems exporting from one arch and importing to another "may not work" - http://docs.vmd.citrix.com/XenServer/6.1.0/1.0/en_gb/guest.html#importing_vms - but mentions nothing about simply turning off the VM on one arch and then powering it back on new arch. VMs are a mix of OS - some Windows, some Linux, multiple versions. Is this something that can be done with no problems, or are there problems I need to be aware of?

I am trying to set up my own DNS server solaris 10, i used the setup guide from http://www.logiqwest.com/dataCenter/Demos/RunBooks/DNS/DNSsetup.html I tried to join windows xp clients to the domain i configured using the above guide but i was unable to join giving me these errors, An error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate adomain controller for domain MYDOMAIN.COM. The error was: "No records found for given DNS query." (error code 0x0000251D DNS_INFO_NO_RECORDS) The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.MYDOMAIN.COM Where could i be going wrong? Your assistance will highly be appreciated

Need help configurating my Tomcat server without any WAR files

I just reinstalled my entire server, and now I can't seem to get my JSP-based website to work on Tomcat anymore. I use the same server.xml file, which worked perfectly before the reinstallation, but no longer. Two different sites, same IP, same top-level domain, on IIS 7.5 -- one works and the other displays HTTP 404 error

I'm running a Windows 2008 R2 box with IIS 7.5 as the web server. On IIS, I have two websites: mysubsite1.mysite.com and mysubsite2.mysite.com. There is only one IP on the server and both sites share this IP. Here is how I have the bindings configured: mysubsite1.mysite.com works fine. However, mysubsite2.mysite.com gives me the following error: Not Found HTTP Error 404. The requested resource is not found. Now, if I change the Host name field for mysubsite1.mysite.com to blank and restart the web server, both sites work! The question is why is the host name field for the first site causing an HTTP 404 error for the second site when both sites' Host name fields are filled? I would appreciate any insight. Thank you.

How to avoid Memory "Hard Fault/sec"

i've a problem on my windows 2008 server x64, and i cannot understand how can i solve it. i'm looking to Resource Monitor and see about 100 to 200 hard faults/sec. and generally the machine is slow. As i've readed a bit it is caused by a "memory Page" that is no longer available on physical memory and causes a io operations (disk) and it is a problem. The current hardware is a intel core2duo E8400 (3.0GHz) with 6GB RAM on a Windows Server Web 64-bit. Actually the machine have about 2GB Ram used what having 4Gb available to use, Why is the machine requires that high level of Disk operations? what can i do to increase the performance? Im experiencing a memory issues? what should be my starting point?

Asp.net mvc application deployment / security issues

I'll start with appologies; I wasn't sure if this was best posted here of Server Fault so if its in the wrong place then please move :-) Basic information I have written the first module of a new application at work. This is written using Visual Studio 2010, targetting .net 3.5 (at the moment) and asp.net mvc 2. This has been working fine during development running on the built in Development server from VS but however does not work once deployed to IIS 7/7.5. To deploy the application, I have built it in release mode and created a deployment package by right clicking on the project in the solution explorer (this will be done with an automated build in tfs once upgrade from the beta). This has then been imported into IIS on the server. The application is using windows/domain authentication. Issue #1 I can fire up internet explorer and browse to the application from a client computer as well as on a remote desktop connection. I can execute the code which reads/stores data in Session fine from the IE instance on the remote desktop but if I browse to it from the client pc it seems to lose the session state. I click on the form submit and the page refreshes and doesn't execute the required code. I've tried setting with; InProc, SQLServer and StateServer. but with no luck :-( Issue #2 As part of the application it views PDF and Tiff documents on the fly which are on a network share on the office network and creates thumbnails if the document hasn't been viewed before. This works if running on the machine the application is deployed to; however when browsing from a client pc I get an error saying: Access to the path '\\fileserver\folder\file.tif' is denied Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path '\\fileserver\folder\file.TIF' is denied. ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}\ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via , the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user. As this is on a different server the user is not accessible. To get round this I have tried: 1 - setting the application pool to run as domain administrator (I know this is a security risk, but I'm just trying to get it to work at the moment!) 2 - to set the log on account for World Wide Web Publishing service to be the domain admin . When trying to restart the service I get ... Windows could not start the World Wide Web Publishing Service service on the Local Computer. Error 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified fro the other services running in the same process. Any pointers/help would be much appriciated as I'm pulling my hair out (of what little I have left). Update I've been using this funky little tool I found - DelegConfig v2 beta (Delegation / Kerberos Configuration Tool). This has been really usefull. So I've got the accessing of the file share working (there is a test page which will read the files) so now I've just got the issue of passing through the users credentials through to the SQL Server (wans't my choice to do it this way!!) to execute the queries etc. but I can't get it to log on as the user. It tries to access it as "NT Authority\Network Service" which doesn't have a sql login (as should be the logged on user). My connection string is: <add name="User" connectionString="Data Source=.;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> No initial catalog is specified as the system is over multiple dbs (also wasn't my choice!!). I really appriciate all the help so far! :-) Any further hints?!

Technically why is processes in Erlang more efficient than OS threads?

Spawning processes seam to be much more efficient in Erlang than starting new threads using the OS (i.e. by using Java or C). Erlang spawns thousands and millions of processes in a short period of time. I know that they are different since Erlang do per process GC and processes in Erlang are implemented the same way on all platforms which isn't the case with OS threads. But I don't fully understand technically why Erlang processes are so much more efficient and has much smaller memory footprint per process. Both the OS and Erlang VM has to do scheduling, context switches and keep track of the values in the registers and so on... Simply why isn't OS threads implemented in the same way as processes in Erlang? Does it have to support something more? and why does it need a bigger memory footprint? Technically why is processes in Erlang more efficient than OS threads? And why can't threads in the OS be implemented and managed in the same efficient way?

taskmgr.exe - Wrong Volume

The other day my girlfriend used my computer to use one of those additional resource CD's that come with text books. This particular CD worked by acting like what seemed like a web server that hosted a site that the student is supposed to use (cgi-bin, python scripts...the whole deal). Today, I opened task manager to shut down some rogue IE's and got the following in an error popup with the title taskmgr.exe - Wrong Volume and Cancel/Try Again/Continue buttons: The wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume DosageCalc into drive D: (FYI: DosageCalc = nursing student) Clicking Cancel or Continue lets me continue to task manager. The CD hasn't been in the drive for days and I've used it since then with no problems. Where could task manager be holding onto this reference? My guess would be the registry somewhere...but I don't even know where to begin looking.

Intent.putExtras not consistent

I have a weird situation with AlarmManager. I am scheduling an event with AlarmManager and passing in a string using intent.putExtra. The string is either silent or vibrate and when the receiver fires the phone should either turn of the ringer or set the phone to vibrate. The log statement correctly outputs the expected value each time. Intent intent; if (eventType.equals("start")) { intent = new Intent(context, SReceiver.class); } else { intent = new Intent(context, EReceiver.class); } intent.setAction(eventType+Long.toString(newId)); Log.v("EditQT",ringerModeType.toUpperCase()); intent.putExtra("ringerModeType", ringerModeType.toUpperCase()); PendingIntent appIntent = PendingIntent.getBroadcast(context, 0, intent, 0); AlarmManager alarmManager = (AlarmManager) getSystemService (Context.ALARM_SERVICE); alarmManager.set(AlarmManager.RTC_WAKEUP, calendar.getTimeInMillis(), appIntent); The receiver that fires when the alarm executes also has a log statement and I can see the first time around that the statement outputs the expected string either SILENT or VIBRATE. The alarm executes and then I change the value for putExtra to opposite string and the receiver still displays the previous value event though the call from the code above shows that the new value was passed in. Troubles with MSVC++ redistributable

A friend of mine is trying to install AutoCAD. In the install log it is written Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (x86) Failed Installation aborted, Result=1603 I've found a site which (hopefully) explains how to solve this: here However, my friend has not been able to uninstall the redistributables. The error message says The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable I've already suggested running this but that didn't help much. Only some of the redistributables could be uninstalled. What can be done? Do you think running some other cleanup tool could work? Or will we have to uninstall manually (how exactly would we do that)?

One time torrent download

I know about bittorrent but have never used it since it tends to be mostly used for illegal download of movies and software. Typically whenever I see a legitimate use for it (Linux distros) there is also a regular download option so I haven't had the need for a client until today. There is a large (500Mb) file I want to download that appears to only be accessible via bit torrent. For a one time use, is there an online resource that converts the torrent to a normal http no-special-client-software download? If not, what is an easy to use and light client to install/uninstall on WinXP for a one time use?

Use of clone() and appendTo() with draggable - unexpected results with dragging

I'm constructing a UI for a doctor scheduling app. We have several doctors, each of whom can go in one of several locations on a scheduled day (M - F). I have the main day/location grid (table) in the center of the screen. At the left is a table for the doctor names. On loading, each table cell contains a span (outlined) with the doctor name. The doctor name can go in one slot for each day. I didn't want to just put 5 copies of the doctor name, because the doctor might not be available all 5 days of the week. The idea was: Drag the span and drop into the calendar table. On the drag "start" event, clone the span and append it to the table cell. Now there is another span ready to be dropped into the calendar table. One line of code does the work: $(ui.helper).clone(true).prependTo(ui.helper.parent()); This works. But when I move the cloned span, the original one moves in sync - preserving the spatial relationships as I move the clone around (no doubt there's a "position:relative;left=XX;top=YY" inserted somewhere). I'm sure there's a way to do what I'm thinking of, while keeping the two spans independent. But I'm not thinking of one. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks! What options can I use in totem, xine or vlc to play on machines with limited resources?

Mplayer has some options that allow me to play it on a machine with limited resources. I can use mplayer -vo x11 -zoom -framedrop to play videos when otherwise I'd run out of memory. At least I think I'm running out of memory. I am running our of some resource for sure. -vo sets the video output driver -zoom actually I don't know what this does, but it works for me ;-) -framedrop allows mplayer to not render frames if it falls behind. Are there similar command line controls (or a defaults file) for totem, vlc or xine?

Can't communicate with Primary DNS Server

A computer, with Windows 7, can't access any website by domain suddenly. Whether this computer use a wired link or connect to the WLAN, The fault persists IP and DNS obtained automatically, and seems normal (ipconfig /all return the correct info) I can visit websites by using HTTP proxy The DNS server is available, other computer in my room works properly. I can ping myself, the gateway and any other IP, but domains I can use nslookup and obtain the correct IP info There are some error information in the event log about dns client events explaining the client can not verify the DNS server available Windows network diagnosis explain that Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (Primary DNS Server) I guess the dns client should be blame. I tried to do the following things but the fault persist. Reinstall the driver of network adapter Reset TCP/IP (netsh int ip reset) Reset Winsock (netsh winsock reset) Reset LSP I don't want to reinstall the whole os, what should I do?

Ghosting context menu clicks in WinXP

Let me preface by saying I have a lot of windows open most of the time, although not resource intensive ones, just browsers, ssh sessions, a music player, FTP client, Notepad++, IM clkients, etc. Anyway, I get a lot of weird visual "ghosting" type effects. For example when right-clicking and then selecting an option from a context menu the selected item will remain in view until I right click somewhere on the desktop. Same thing happens when selecting items from the File, Edit, etc. menu in various programs. I'm assuming this is just a result of a less than high quality video card (NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200), all the other hardware in the machine is newer higher quality, that specific video card was added after the fact for multiple monitors. I have looked all over the web for solutions and have increased the number of GDI handles for Windows, reduced the hardware accelaration on the card, etc. Any suggestions other than replace the card?

Oracle account locked

Hi All, I had a user in my oracle DB with some 'x' password for sometime. Without notifying my team I changed the password to 'y'. But my team members tried to connect to the machine with the old passowrd 'x' and as the limit was set, the user account got locked. I know how to set the resource limit for the login. It would be helpful if anyone can help in finding who and all has tried to connect to the DB. As a administrator I would like to view from where the connection was from. Thanks in advance. Priya.R

I am currently using the AXL snippet <firstname>FirstNameFilter</firstname><lastname>LastNameFilter</lastname> This will work as & between two filters. for example my filter is FirstNameFilter = sam* LastNameFilter = joy* this will return the entries which satisfies both the filters. But i want to filter in such a way that we need to or this filter like i need to get the users with First Name is sam* or last name = joy*. Whether anyone did such AXL programming? My internet connection just got really slow - How can I troubleshoot it?

A few days ago my connection became really slow. I have DSL which should be 3mb down and 768k up. I'm lucky if I get 768k down and 200k up. It sucks. I called my ISP, Verizon and they did some sort of line test and told me the problem was on my end. I rebooted my modem several times, like they told me. I'm not really sure why I even bothered calling them, the guy on the other end was just reading stuff out of a notebook - pretty useless. So, I checked my network traffic in windows resource monitor, and there doesn't seem to be anything there hogging the bandwidth. What else could be slowing my connection down on my PC? on my router? Something else?
