• How should I define a composite foreign key for domain constraints in the presence of surrogate keys

  I am writing a new app with Rails so I have an id column on every table. What is the best practice for enforcing domain constraints using foreign keys? I'll outline my thoughts and frustration. Here's what I would imagine as "The Rails Way". It's what I started with. Companies: id: integer, serial company_code: char, unique, not null Invoices: id: integer, serial company_id: integer, not null Products: id: integer, serial sku: char, unique, not null company_id: integer, not null LineItems: id: integer, serial invoice_id: integer, not null, references Invoices (id) product_id: integer, not null, references Products (id) The problem with this is that a product from one company might appear on an invoice for a different company. I added a (company_id: integer, not null) to LineItems, sort of like I'd do if only using natural keys and serials, then added a composite foreign key. LineItems (product_id, company_id) references Products (id, company_id) LineItems (invoice_id, company_id) references Invoices (id, company_id) This properly constrains LineItems to a single company but it seems over-engineered and wrong. company_id in LineItems is extraneous because the surrogate foreign keys are already unique in the foreign table. Postgres requires that I add a unique index for the referenced attributes so I am creating a unique index on (id, company_id) in Products and Invoices, even though id is simply unique. The following table with natural keys and a serial invoice number would not have these issues. LineItems: company_code: char, not null sku: char, not null invoice_id: integer, not null I can ignore the surrogate keys in the LineItems table but this also seems wrong. Why make the database join on char when it has an integer already there to use? Also, doing it exactly like the above would require me to add company_code, a natural foreign key, to Products and Invoices. The compromise... LineItems: company_id: integer, not null sku: integer, not null invoice_id: integer, not null does not require natural foreign keys in other tables but it is still joining on char when there is a integer available. Is there a clean way to enforce domain constraints with foreign keys like God intended, but in the presence of surrogates, without turning the schema and indexes into a complicated mess?

• Make Apache to show different index.html also in browser's address bar

  I have the following foloder tree on my shared hosting server: www.somesite.com | |_ public_html (document folder) |_ .htaccess (Apache file) |_ inde.html (page shown by server now when someone looks for www.somesite.com) | |_ site_editor (folder) | |_login.html (site editor control panel) | |_file1.php | |_file2.php | |_ ... | |_ website (folder) |_ index.html (website HOME PAGE) |_ page1.html |_ page2.html |_ etc. Now when someone looks for www.somesite.com the webserver look for index.html in public_html folder. I would like the web server to show website/index.html when someone looks for www.somesite.com and I would like his browser bar to show only www.somesite.com/index.html and not www.somesite.com/website/index.html I would also like the web server to show site_editor/login.html when someone looks for www.somesite.com/site_editor/ Is it possible to accomplish both task by setting .htaccess files in some ways??? • Disable apache catch-all subdomain

  Hi, I have a problem with my apache2 configuration and I hope someone here can help me. There is one server with one IP and a few domains. http://123.123.123.123 should have /var/www/123.123.123.123 as DocumentRoot http://www.domain1.com should have /var/www/domain1.com as DocumentRoot http://blog.domain1.com should have /var/www/blog.domain1.com as DocumentRoot http://www.domain2.com should have /var/www/domain2.com as DocumentRoot and http://bullshit.domain1.com along with all other non-existing subdomains on both domains should return a 404 page. What am I doing wrong? That can't be so hard, and I'm sure I had it working before... In my current config all subdomains show the /var/www/123.123.123.123. I guess because thats the first VirtualHost apache is reading.

• Database design for a media server containing movies, music, tv and everything in between?

  In the near future I am attempting to design a media server as a personal project. MY first consideration to get the project underway is architecture, it will certainly be web based but more specifically than that I am looking for suggestions on the database design. So far I am considering something like the following, where I am using [] to represent a table, the first text is the table name to give an idea of purpose and the items within {} would be fields of the table. Also not, fid is functional id referencing some other table. [Item {id, value/name, description, link, type}] - this could be any entity, single song or whole music album, game, movie - almost see this as a recursive relation, ie. a song is an item but an album that song is part of is also an item or for example a tv season is an item, with multiple items being tv episodes [Type {id, fid, mime type, etc}] - file type specific information - could identify how code handles streaming/sending this item to a user [Location {id, fid, path to file?}] [Users {id, username, email, password, ...? }] - user account information [UAC {id, fid, acess level}] - i almost feel its more flexible to seperate access control permissions form the user accounts themselves [ItemLog {id, fid, fid2, timestamp}] - fid for user id, and fid2 for item id - this way we know what user access what when [UserLog {id, fid, timestamp}] -both are logs for access, whether login or last item access [Quota {id, fid, cap}] - some sort of way to throttle users from queing up the entire site and letting it download ... Suggestions or comments are welcome as the hope is that this project will be a open source project once some code is laid out.

  I have a situation where I need to repeatedly execute a stored procedure Now this procedure (spMAIN) has a cursor inside which looks for a value from a table as T1,which has the following structure ID Status ---- -------- 1 New 2 New 3 success 4 Error now the cursor looks for all rows with a status of 'New' Now while processing , if that instance of the cursor encounters an error, another SP say spError needs to be called, the 'Status' column in T1 needs to be updated to 'Error' and spMAIN needs to be called again which again repeats the process, looking for rows with 'new' how do I do it?   In the App ID section of the Program Portal, locate the App ID you wish to use with the Apple Push Notification service. Only App IDs with a specific bundle ID can be used with the APNs. You cannot use a “wild-card” application ID. You must see “Available” under the Apple Push Notification service column to register this App ID and configure a certificate for this App ID. Click the ‘Configure’ link next to your desired App ID. In the Configure App ID page, check the Enable Push Notification Services box and click the Configure button. Clicking this button launches the APNs Assistant, which guides you through the next series of steps that create your App ID specific Client SSL certificate. Download the Client SSL certificate file to your download location. Navigate to that location and double-click the certificate file (which has an extension of cer) to install it in your keychain. When you are finished, click Done in the APNS Assistant. Double-clicking the file launches Keychain Access. Make sure you install the certificate in your login keychain on the computer you are using for provider development. The APNs SSL certificate should be installed on your notification server. When you finish these steps you are returned to the Configure App ID page of the iPhone Dev Center portal. The certificate should be badged with a green circle and the label “Enabled”. I can successfully read the /var/www/svnauth file Any reasons for this? • Cannot convert object, recieved from ajax call, into a long

  I'm using Asp.Net-Mvc, I have this method in my controller: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult LinkAccount(string site, object id) { return this.Json(id); } Here's the ajax method that calls it: $.post("/Account/LinkAccount", { site: "Facebook", id: FB.Facebook.apiClient.get_session().uid }, function(result) { alert(result); }, "json" ); returning this.Json(id); makes the alert work... it alerts 7128383 (something similar to that). but if I change this.Json(id) to this.Json(Conver.ToInt64(id)); the alert does not fire... Any idea of why I can't convert an object received from an object to a long? I already know changing the LinkAccount method to accept a long instead works just fine. It's just I need it as an object because some other sites I'm linking up have strings for id's rather than longs. UPDATE: I tried running the code on localhost so I could set a breakpoint. First I changed the line return this.Json(Convert.ToInt64(id)); to long idAsLong = Convert.ToInt64(id));. Here's what the debugger is telling me: When I hover over id it says: "id | {string[1]}" and when I press the plus button is shows: "[0] | '7128383'" When I hover over idAsLong, it says: "idAsLong | 0" Why isn't it converting it properly?

  Hello, I am learning asp.net but I'm finding some problems. My doubt is how to make a list of titles of news contained in a database. And in this list, each of the titles when clicked is redirected to a page where you will be able to view the news in full (Title, Body, Author ..). What I got: - A database containing a table with the news, every news is associated with an identification code (ex: "ID"). - A page where you will make the listing. (Ex: site / listofnews.aspx) - I have a page that uses the method "querystring" to know what is the primarykey the news. (Ex: site/shownews.aspx?ID=12345, where "12345" is the primarykey of the news. Once it knows what is the primarykey of the news in the database, it loads each of the fields of the page (news.aspx) with the news, this part is working ok. - The data is retrieve using the Linq, so I receive a List of "News", the class "News" as ID, Title, Body, Author.. My doubt is how to make the listing clickable. • MySQL query pulling from two tables, display in correct fields

It looks as though where both links.id and project.id are equal, it outputs anything, but when there is no links.id associated with a given $clientID the container relative to the $clientID doesn't display at all. Essentially I'm using this to add links dynamically to a specific client in this CMS and if there are no links, I want the container to show up anyway. Hopefully I've expressed myself clearly, any pointers in the right direction are appreciated. Thanks!

  I'm using the jQuery-UI Sortable Connected Lists. I'm saving the order of the connected lists to a Rails server. My approach is to grab the list ID, column ID and index position of each list item. I want to then wrap this into an object that can be passed as a parameter back to the Rails Controller to be saved into the database. So ideally i'm looking to format the parameter like this: Parameters: {"Activity"=>[{id:1,column:2,position:1},{id:2,column:2,position:2} ,...]} How do I properly format my parameters to be passed in this Ajax POST request?
