  I am sure you all have heard of Responsive/Adaptive Website Design and Development, but for the sake of beginners to the technique and skill, what are ways to create a Responsive Menu Navigation? I know there are a few standard ways, hence: JavaScript/jQuery Menu that changes functionality at different breakpoints. CSS3 Menu that changes functionality at different breakpoints. If you have had the opportunity to create a Responsive Menu, what technique did you use? How did you do it? Do you have an example? Did your Menu change functionality at different break points? • Working with logout dialog box - text error

  I am having a problem with the shutdown dialog box for Ubuntu 12.04. If I am logged in as any user and press shutdown, I see the box with the question 'Are you sure..." and its usual options. Shutting down when I am not logged in as a specific user, however, displayed only square boxes. An image of this error can be found here: I believe this error started a few weeks ago when i accidentally changed the group for my root system directory, so it might be a permission thing or an improperly assigned group lingering somewhere. The trouble is that I don't know where the text for this box is stored, and no idea where to begin checking. Can any one point me in the right direction?

  I bought a dell inspiron n5110 hoping that i'll be able to use it fine with Linux; however i couldn't install the video card drivers and in 8 months the motherboard burned because the power management wasn't right and it was overheating. I want to buy a workstation pc that works with ubuntu. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd like to have the videocard and all other hardware to be used properly Thank you

• SEO Question - allintitle with or without quotes

  I'm trying to learn more about implementing basic SEO strategies and have been spending a lot of time refining my keywords using Google Analytics combined with manually checking them using Google's allintitle operator. However, I'm unclear on whether I should be using quotes with my allintitles. Example: allintitle: seo tips and tricks for beginners 191 results allintitle: "seo tips and tricks for beginners" 70 results My thought is that it would be more accurate to use it without quotes because that way you get a more well rounded idea of all those you are competing with. So, my question is does Google give more weight to exact matches in the title tag or does that not really matter? If someone searched for: seo tips and tricks for beginners, would they be more likely to see the ones that have that exact phrase in their title tag or does that not have any impact?

• Should I learn GWT (I'm a Java newb) if I eventually want to learn JavaScript and related libraries?

  I haven't been working with Java for a long time, and I found GWT to be interesting plus a chance to learn and practice Java. My goal for this year is to learn JavaScript. I'm very interested in HTML5, browser extensions and other cool stuff that JavaScript can do. I think I'm more interested in this than Java at the moment (that's not to say I dislike or would discontinue working with Java) but I would like advice as to whether it's a good idea to proceed with learning GWT (given my interest in JavaScript) or to spend my time learning other Java technology. • Can I make query strings produce separate pages?

  I have a profile page with a URL like so: localhost/profile.php/?username=Bob I was wondering, if I had a separate <title> which changed according to the username, would they produce separate pages in the google search results? How do I tell Google to only use the username string or does it search within the title? On a similar note, how would I create a separate page with the username like so: localhost/bob instead of a query string like facebook does. Do that make a new file for each user?

• Where should I store and verify files manipulated by an app

  I'm working on a little Ruby script to move screenshots while renaming them based on a specific convention. I'll be writing tests to confirm the behavior. Ruby has lots of conventions for where to store files (e.g. the "spec" and "features" directories for RSpec and Cucumber, respectively), but I'm not finding best practices for storing files that will be acted upon by the tests. The same goes for a destination for the final copies of the files. So, the question in two parts is: Where should I store files that the test cases will use for a source input. Where should tests that need to write output files send them to.

• Google Analytics on Demo Site

  Will adding the UA code of the live site to a revision site affect anything adversely? They are, technically, two different sites with different metrics. I don't want to lose the old data when I initiate the new site, of course. I would also like to work on setting up the new analytics page while the revision site is in development. Does anyone have any good workflows on setting up a revision site without losing old site data?

• Skype chat opens full screen and I can't get off it

  Skype was working perfect and then all of a sudden the chat box was full screen sized. Once you click on the Skype icon from the side bar it takes you straight to the full sized chat windows (By full sized I mean the side bar, top bar, and the programs close buttons disappear) I have uninstalled Skype and installed again but the issue is still occurring. I looked about but couldn't find an answer, thanks for any help!

• What kind of hosting do I need?

  I migrated this question from serverfault. Hopefully this is the appropriate place. I have been trying to answer this question but I haven't found an specific answer to my situation. As I want to pay for what I need, I thought I could get a good answer here. I have a custom made forum (rather than a built-in forum like the ones you can find in plugins, e.g. WP-Forum or phpBB type of software) in Django. I don't want to use Apache and modwsgi because it's usually very memory-hungry and I can't afford a big server. I prefer a combination of nginx and gunicorn which I think is very efficient (maybe you can also tell me what you think about that). I'm expecting to receive 10,000 to 20,000 visits each month with 15,000 to 30,000 page impressions. I have reviewed some cloud services like Amazon EC2 or Rackspace and other more traditional services (Linodo). This site won't use videos or big images and I certainly don't need a huge amount of bandwidth (200GB would be definitely too much). I need shell access so shared hosting is out of the question. What do I need to run a website like that without problems? What about RAM? 256MB would be enough (that's the amount of RAM offered by small instances in Amazon and Rackspace)? Do you know of any alternative to those I mentioned? If you need more information to provide a useful answer, please don't hesitate to ask. By the way, I was told that Linodo is not all that different to Amazon EC2 but this website is supposed to work 24/7, so I can't take advantage of Linodo's flexibility regarding creating and deleting instances. • display port on x230 not working

  having problems with my new lenovo x230 - using dual montiors, only vga registers anything. This has the Intel graphics controller : 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics Controller (rev 09) TO get it to even boot, had to add the nomodeset parameter to the kernel. Otherwise will not even start up X Ive upgraded my kernel to the latest 3.6 with no difference. The display section reads the monitor as the only display and labels it as laptop. Cant seem to get it to work! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Should I extract specific functionality into a function and why?

  I have a large method which does 3 tasks, each of them can be extracted into a separate function. If I'll make an additional functions for each of that tasks, will it make my code better or worse and why? Edit: Obviously, it'll make less lines of code in the main function, but there'll be additional function declarations, so my class will have additional methods, which I believe isn't good, because it'll make the class more complex. Edit2: Should I do that before I wrote all the code or should I leave it until everything is done and then extract functions?

• point to rectangle distance

  I have a 2D rectangle with x, y position and it's height and width and a randomly positioned point nearby it. Is there a way to check if this point might collide with the rectangle if closer than a certain distance? like imagine an invisible radius outside of that point colliding with said rectangle. I have problems with this simply because it is not a square, it would be so much easier this way! Any help? Thanks in advance.

• Google Analytics goal funnel does not recognize virtual page views

  I have a setup wizard with 3 steps. Since I'm using AJAX each step uses a virtual pageview with an appropriate URL for each step (see below). The pageviews are being recorded in the Content section of Google Analytics but the Goal Funnel still shows zero for each step. I've tried advise on other forums such as... Make sure Goal URL is set to Exact match Make sure no steps or the Goal URL are a parent directory of any other steps. For example, don't track /wizard/ as a Goal/step and track /wizard/step2/. Not sure why this would be a problem since it is an exact match, but it shouldn't hurt so I tried it... Require (or don't require - tried both) the first step in the funnel ...but none of these seem to work. Thoughts? • Have there been attempts to make object containers that search for valid programs by auto wiring compatible components?

  I hope this post isn't too "Fringe" - I'm sure someone will just kill it if it is :) Three things made me want to reach out about this now: Decoupling is so in the forefront of design. TDD inspires the idea that it doesn't matter how a program comes to exist as long as it works. Seeing how often the adapter pattern is applied to achieve (1). I'm almost sure this has been tried from a memory of reading about it around the year 2000 or so. If I had to guess, it was maybe about and earlier version of the Java Spring framework. At this time we were not so far from days when the belief was that computer programs could exhibit useful emergent behavior. I think the article said it didn't work, but it didn't say it was impossible. I wonder if since then it has been deemed impossible or simply an illusion due to a false assumption of similarity between a brain and a CPU. I know this illusion existed because I had an internship in 1996 where I programmed neural nets that were supposedly going to exhibit "brain damage". STILL, after all that, I'm sitting around this morning and not able to shake the idea that it should be possible to have a method of programming to allow autonomous components to find each other, attempt to collaborate and their outputs evaluated against a set desired results.

• How do you dual boot Windows 7/8 seperatly with GRUB?

  I installed the beta version of Windows 8 and re-installed GRUB. When I boot my computer and select Windows 7, I get the new Windows 8 booting screen asking to boot between either Windows 7 or 8. If I choose Windows 7, my computer then restarts and I have to select Windows 7 again in order to boot into 7. But if I choose Windows 8 it boots right up. I understand I can choose which OS to boot by default, but I want my GRUB options to be the only way to choose between OS's. So my question is, how can I set this up so that when I click on Windows 7, I go there, and when I select Windows 8, I boot 8?

• Translate along local axis

  I have an object with a position matrix and a rotation matrix (derived from a quaternion, but I digress). I'm able to translate this object along world-relative vectors, but I'm trying to figure out how to translate it along local-relative vectors. So if the object is tilted 45 degrees around its Z-axis the vector (1, 0, 0) would make it move to the upper right. For world-space translations I simply turn the movement vector into a matrix and multiply it by the position matrix: position_mat = translation_mat * position_mat. For local-space translations I'd think I'd have to use the rotation matrix into that formula, but I see the object spin around instead when I apply a translation over time no matter where I multiply the rotation matrix.

• Avoiding "double" subscriptions

  I am working on a website that requires a bit of marketing; let me explain. This website is offering a single, say, iTunes 50$ voucher to a lucky winner. To be entered in the draw, you need to invite (and has to join) at least one friend to the website. Pretty straightforward. Now, of course it would be easy for anyone to just create a fake account and invite that account so, I was thinking of some other way to somehow find out of possible cheating. I was thinking of an IP check on the newly subscribed (invited) user, and if there is the same IP logged in the last 24 hours, and if that's the case, investigate more about it. But I was thinking that maybe there is a more clever way around this issue. Has anyone ever though about this? What other solutions did you try? Thanks in advance.

• Help with calculation to steer ship in 3d space

  I'm a beginner using XNA to try and make a 3D Asteroids game. I'm really close to having my space ship drive around as if it had thrusters for pitch and yaw. The problem is I can't quite figure out how to translate the rotations, for instance, when I pitch forward 45 degrees and then start to turn - in this case there should be rotation being applied to all three directions to get the "diagonal yaw" - right? • Simple Hierarchical Clustering Implementations for C#?

  I need a C# library that can do hierarchical single/complete link clustering. It's for a BSc final year project and I can't find any free implementations. I'd be happy to port a small(ish) Java project to C#, but most of the Java implementations are contained within huge libraries that have 30+ algorithms. The problem with large libraries is that one has to port 50% of the entire library due to dependency fanout. I'd be extremely grateful if anyone knows of any free single/complete link clustering implementations for C# or a small Java implementation of either! By the way, as I am a student, it may be possible to ask for an academic/research license from commercial companies.

• Should I expect my peers to read or practice on a regular basis? [closed]

  I've been debating asking this question for some time. Based several of the comments I read in this question I decided I had to ask. This feels like I'm stating the obvious, but I believe that regular reading (of books, blogs, StackOverflow, whatever) and/or practice are required just to stay current (let alone excel) in whichever stack you use to pay the bills, not to mention playing with things outside your comfort zone to learn new ways of doing things. Yet, I virtually never see this from many of my peers. Even when I go out of my way to point out useful (and almost always free) learning material, I quite often get a sense of total apathy from those I'm speaking to. I'd even go so far as to say that if someone doesn't try to improve (or at least stay current), they'll atrophy as technology advances and actually become less useful to the company. I don't expect people to spend hours a day studying or practicing. I have two young kids and hours of practice simply aren't feasible. Still, I find some time; perhaps on the train, at lunch, in bed for a few minutes, whatever. I'm willing to believe this is arrogance or naivete on my part, but I'd like to hear what the community has to say. So here's my question: Should I expect (and encourage) the same from my peers, or just keep my mouth shut and do my own thing?

• Transparent parts of texture are opaque black instead

  I render a sprite twice, one on top of the other. The sprites have transparent parts, so I should be able to see the bottom sprite under the top sprite. The transparent parts are black (the clear colour) and opaque instead though and the topmost sprite blocks the bottom sprite. My fragment shader is trivial: uniform sampler2D texture; varying vec2 f_texcoord; void main() { gl_FragColor = texture2D(texture, f_texcoord); } I have glEnable(GL_BLEND) and glBlendFunc(GL_SRC_ALPHA, GL_ONE_MINUS_SRC_ALPHA) in my initialization code. My texture comes from a PNG file that I load with libpng. I'm sure to use GL_RGBA when initializing the texture with glTexImage2D (otherwise the sprites look like noise).
