On Windows XP/2000, when the user presents invalid credentials, the program/system performs as expected. On a Windows 7 system, the procedure doesn't validate the credentials and allows the user to continue without a check.

Our SOP is to disable, export/purge the Exchange mailbox, and then after "some time" has elapsed (usually quarterly), delete the account. Is there any need for that delay? After exporting and purging their mailbox, why shouldn't I delete the account right then and there?

  I have never used a Linux system in an AD environment before and am trying to join my laptop running Ubuntu to join our Active Directory (DC is a Windows Server 2008 machine) using Likewise-open. Using the GUI wizard, I have joined the domain. I can mount network shares using CIFS Problem: I only have read access to our fileserver. What more is needed to get the AD to recognize me as a user who has the appropriate rights? Any help is appreciated.

• Web interface to allow users to change their Active Directory password

  I have a few web applications that use Active Directory to authenticate. What I would like to be able to do is provide a simple web page that would allow users to update their AD password. This wasn't a problem when the majority of the users had windows machines that connected to this AD server (and could ctrl-alt-del to change the password), but we are moving away from that and the AD server is mostly for web apps. Is there a simple solution for this, or am I looking at the big LDAP managers?

  I have an ftp client (.NET app I don't have the source to) that only does active mode that needs to push data to an appliances ftp-server that only speaks passive. There is nothing I can do to modify the software on either end; but everything in between is fair game. (routing, windows or linux software, firewall tricks, ...) I followed this tutorial: http://wiki.debian.org/Authenticating_Linux_With_Active_Directory but I'm stuck on the getent passwd Because this doesn't list all AD users but only locals. This is my nsswitch.conf: passwd: files winbind group: files winbind shadow: files winbind And I'm sure it is well connected to AD becuse this: wbinfo -u Lists all AD users. What have I missed?

Currently, I make the change in both places, which I suspect is unhealthy, but it's the only way I know to make sure that the account is disabled to every machine. Is there a better way? I'm not really sure if each DC needs to be monitored, each NTDS connection, or each DC * Each NTDS connection. For example: I have a directory TarPrefix/x/y/z in a tar archive I want to extract it in a given target directory for example: extracted/a/ this directory should contain all the files and directories contained in directory TarPrefix/x/y/z. subdir_and_files = [ tarinfo for tarinfo in tar.getmembers() if tarinfo.name.startswith("subfolder/") ] to get the list of all the members in the directory path "subfolder/" and then I extract it using tar.extractall(extracted/a,subdir_and_files) but it extracts all the members with their directory path For example this results in extracted/a/x/y/z. Could you please help me in extracting these files in the given folder.

  I want to style the :active state of a button that is represented by an <a> tag. The <a> tag has an inner <span> (beacuse I want to add an icon to this button). I notice the :active state is triggered properly in everything but Internet Explorer 8. In IE 8, it appears that the area around the <span> (the <a>’s padding) triggers the :active state, but when clicking directly on the text within the <span>, the :active state is not triggered. • Only show windows 7 Preview Pane (in explorer) when the file has a preview

  I use the preview pane often, especially with pdfs. But when selecting folders or files which don't have previews, or not even selecting anything, the preview pane stays, it's quite big, and I use lots when I have the explorer window maximised on my 1920x1080 monitor in this case it takes up about half my screen, but when I use explorer in a smaller window the preview pane shrinks the cneter folder pane and stays half the size of the window. Is there anyway to only show the preview pane when the file has a preview and then hide it again when the file doesn't or not file is selected. (btw, please don't say about alternate file browsers, as they all look ugly and complicated)

• windowsupdate troubles on windowsxp after april 2014, plus an explorer error message

  I've spent the last couple of days trying to install windows xp from a cd onto my desktop. The installtion is successful, and I can activate windows, but cannot run windows update. The error I receive from windows update is: Error number: 0x80240036 I understand that after april 2014 microsoft is no longer developing new patches, but I have presumed that customers would continue to have access to all the patches that where made up to this date. How can I install these patches? Is this possible? As mentioned, I can install windows and activate, but cannot run windowsupdate (Error number: 0x80240036). Seperately, there is an error with a windows explorer pull down menu (item) that asks: Is this copy of windows legal? How can I get rid of this message? I am not running a pirated, or illegal copy of windows and this message should not be there. I want continue running windows xp without windows update, but I need to get rid of this windows explorer error message.
