• DNS Configuration when registrar and host are two different companies

  I'm a total noob when it comes to DNS configuration. My client bought a domain through one company and is hosting their site with another (a virtual dedicated server). I can't find anything on the web that explains one's way through this setup. Where do I start? Which nameservers do I use? Which company's zone files do I edit? Basically it boils down, for me that I don't understand which company takes the lead, and which piggybacks off their configuration. Thanks in advance for the help.

• 1and1: Unable to host an external domain

  I'm sorry if this isn't the right place for this question, but I'm presently having difficulties with my hosting provider (1and1). Two weeks ago, two of my clients bought hosting from them on my recommendation, but as it turned out, 1and1 are having severe technical difficulties. Right now non of their hosting packages are able to accept ANY external domains. So either you pay the costs of transferring the registrar of your domain, or you use the ugly 1and1 domain name. Not any good for a hosting company of 1and1's reputation! They have been promising me for two weeks that they're going to fix the problem, but as you have probably guessed by now, that hasn't been the case. I would like to know if a) Anyone else is in the same boat as me, and b) If there are other comparably reputable hosting providers that I should consider moving to instead? Very disappointing! :( Note: This is for 1and1 in the UK. I imagine it isn't affecting users in other countries(?) Clarification: 1and1 are unable to accept ANY external domains. That means that even if you update your DNS details on your domain, their system cannot be updated to add your external domain to your account.

• Mac host and Ubuntu guest on virtual box shared folder issue

  I have set up ubuntu server on virtual box on my mac. I created a shared folder which appears to be saved and visible in the configuration section on virtual box for the ubuntu server machine. My only issue is I don't know where this is or how to access it from inside ubuntu server. Does it get it's own directory or do I have to create some sort of a sym-link? If I do need to manually tell it to look in the mac for the file how do I reference the mac machine?

  Hi, requested use case is having a Windows XP SP3 guest running in 64bit Ubuntu. (Linux pcs 2.6.35-22-server #35-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 22:02:33 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux) I want this guest to access an LVM LV on the Ubuntu disk. I've setup the following LVM config: --- Logical volume --- LV Name /dev/storage/sdc1 VG Name storage LV UUID Zg5IMC-OlqB-prL5-fgg4-3A9A-OgKP-oZ0QkJ LV Write Access read/write LV Status available # open 0 LV Size 1.01 GiB Current LE 259 Segments 1 Allocation inherit Read ahead sectors auto - currently set to 256 Block device 251:3 -- 1) I've setup a storage pool for /dev/storage 2) I've mkfs.vfat /dev/storage/sdc1 3) and made a virtual IDE disk in the virt-manager setup for the guest. Target device: IDE Disk 2 Source path: /dev/storage/sdc1 -- Now when running XP (guest) Windows sees a new disk in Disk Manager and want's to install a partition on it, since it believes the drive is empty. After formatting from within Windows I can put data on the new disk volume. -- Back in Ubuntu however I cannot access this this any more since it created a partition within an LVM Logical Volume. • Rewrite request URI based on Host header in HAProxy

  I would like to set up HAProxy to forward HTTP requests to some backend servers but I need it to also rewrite the URI part based on the Host. I've read through the doc but it seems that reqirep isn't suitable for this purpose. Any idea if this is even possible with HAProxy? Here are the details of what I'm trying to accomplish: Requests that come in on: http://www.original-domain.com/ would be balanced between: http://server1/domains/www.original-domain.com/ ... http://serverN/domains/www.original-domain.com/ The proxy should be able to handle this for any number of domains (original-domain.com can be anything, it's not limited to a fixed set of values). For this to work HAProxy would need to rewrite a request like this: GET /original-uri HTTP/1.1 Host: original-domain.com to: GET /domains/original-domain.com/original-uri HTTP/1.1 Host: serverN and forward that request to one of the internal servers.

• Set up development site on another server/host

  I'm developing a site for a client. They've got a site now that's hosted at hosting.com. I'm going to move them to my VM hosting solution at edge web but I want to run some tests and have the client approve the site before changing the name servers to the new site/hosting location. How do I make this happen? I'm running a red hat/Apache on linux for the edge web hosting. I don't have control of the domain name (i.e. the client controls that right now). Edgeweb has set up a dns zone for the domain name so that when the time comes to switch we're ready to go. I'm a web developer and I understand the technologies that make a user experience 'work' but I'm unfamiliar with the server jargon and all that so, please be patient. Thanks in advance.

• SQL Server PowerShell Provider follows the Version of PowerShell on the Host and other errata

  There may be some misunderstanding on how the PowerShell Provider for SQL Server works. I’ve written an article or two explaining that you can use PowerShell with SQL Server, without having the SQL Server 2008 (or higher) provider around. After all, PowerShell just uses .NET, and SQL Server “Server Management Objects” or SMO listen to that interface as well. In SQL Server 2008 and higher we created a “MiniShell” for PowerShell that gives you the ability to treat a SQL Server Instance as a drive (called a “Provider” or path or drive) and a few commands (called command-lets). Using these two simple constructs you can move around SQL Server quickly and work with the objects it holds. I read the other day where someone stated that we had “re-compiled” PowerShell, so that you would have version 1.0 from SQL Server and 2.0 on your new server. Not so! Drop to a SQLPS prompt and a PowerShell prompt and type this in each: $PSVersionTable They should return the same value. You can think of a MiniShell as simply a compiled “profile” that gives you those providers and command-lets automatically – that’s all. In fact, you can load the SMO libraries yourself without the SQL Server 2008 Provider anywhere in sight. I do this all the time, since the MiniShell also has other restrictions. Also remember that if you run a PowerShell script as a SQL Agent Job step type (in 2008 and higher) that you’re running under the context of the account that starts Agent – I think most folks know this, but it’s good to keep in mind. There’s a re-written section of Books Online that goes over working with this very nicely – also covers the question “How to I connect to another server using the SQL Server PowerShell Provider” (hint: It’s just CD) and “How do I load all the SMO stuff if I don’t want to use the Provider” and more.   Does anyone know a website that hosts javascripts on their page? I have a research project that needs to collect some RTT from all over the world and compare them together. I have written the javascript code for that but I do not have a high hit rate website to put it on to collect data. I know it is a little bit odd question to ask, but do you know any website or any trick that can help me? Note that the script would not do any harm to anybody! :-) Thanks, Decad is right, I basically need some people to put my script on their "high-hit rate" website ... so I can collect data from large number of clients... • Setting up routing for MS DirectAccess to a VMWare EsXi Host

  I'm trying to set up DirectAccess on a virtual machine so I can demonstrate it's value and then if need be add a physical machine to host it. I'm hitting a problem because the Direct Access machine (DA01) needs to have 2 public addresses actually configured on the external adapter but there is a Zyxel Zywall USG300 between the VMware ESXi host and the outside world. I've summarised my setup in this diagram If I ping from the LAN to 212.x.y.89 I get a response but if I ping from the VM I get destination host unreachable. I used "route add 212.x.y.89 192.c.d.1" and get request timed out. At that point I see outbound traffic allowed on the Zyxel firewall but nothing coming back. I'm past my understanding of routing and VMWare so am not sure how to tie down where my problem lies (or even if this setup is possible). So any help massively appreciated. Paul

I'd like to send back the Parent host of the guest with this monitor, How can I found out the VM host from within a ESXi VM? Ideally I'm looking for a universal way to do this from both Windows and Linux, but if they are separate paths that okay. Using something from VMWare tools would be fine, but I'm not currently using anything running the vSphere API.

• Is PhotoBucket a viable solution to host a website's photo galleries

  I'm currently working with a lot of photographers and will probably be picking up development on a professional photography site soon. With that in mind, and I can't stop thinking about a way I can implement a user-friendly photo gallery hosting solution where the site owner can upload images themselves without any webmaster intervention. Kind of like a CMS for image hosting. The idea is: - The user can log in to PhotoBucket - Upload their gallery - Visit an admin section of the site - Enter the new gallery name to the listing And... Voila, the gallery automagically gets displayed on the website in a clean lightbox-style presentation format (ie, no iframe nonsense). I took a brief look at the API and it looks promising. Is this a viable solution? Bonus points if you have implemented something like this with Photobucket and/or another 3rd-party image hosting site. Note: Purchasing a premium account is expected if necessary. The limitations on free accounts at most image hosting sites are just too restrictive to be useful.

• Network access to VM only from host ...

  I'm trying to do some testing of Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 2 Server in a VMWare environment. The host is XP, and the VM software is VMPlayer. Problem is, I want to be able to see the VM from the network, not just from the host. I can SSH into the VM from the host, but from any other machine on the network I can't even get the VM to respond to a ping. Going the other way (from the VM out) isn't a problem at all. The VM software did an 'easy installer' so I'm not really sure what was going on with the networking. Suggestions?

• Domain appears taken when searched from a different host, but whois says 'No match'

  I have recently registered a new .name domain. It is just myfirstname.name, something like nanda.name. My debit card has been billed, but my domain control panel doesn't show any information regarding the new domain. I have raised a ticket with their support and there is no response yet. It's been 3 days. I checked some other registrars and almost all of them say that nanda.name is taken, but when I search whois either from my command line or the numerous whois web services, I get No match as answer each time. What gives? PS : I should add that this registrar's support is known to suck, which, by the time I found, is a bit late.

  A few minutes ago I signed up at a new webhost. I have yet to move my sites over. Upon initial SSH connection, I checked the load and memory usage, they do seem rather higher than I would like: # uptime 12:06:51 up 71 days, 23:23, 1 user, load average: 9.02, 9.49, 9.45 # free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 33014800 31927192 1087608 0 2384812 17729816 -/+ buffers/cache: 11812564 21202236 Swap: 16787916 8584 16779332 Is that a bit to packed? I'm only paying about $5 USD per month, so I don't expect <0.1 loads, but ~10 is worrisome. Is it not? • Known Hosts ECDSA Host Key Multiple Domains on One IP

  Hello, world!, I have a VPS set up with multiple domain names pointing to it. Arbitrarily, I like to access it via SSH through the domain name I'm dealing with. So for example, if I'm doing something with example1.com, I'll log in with ssh [email protected], and if I'm working with example2.com, I'll log in with ssh [email protected]. They both point to the same user on the same machine. However, because SSH keeps track of the server's fingerprint, it tells me that there is an offending host key, and makes me confirm access. $ ssh [email protected] Warning: the ECDSA host key for 'example2.com' differs from the key for the IP address '123.123.123.123' Offending key for IP in /home/me/.ssh/known_hosts:33 Matching host key in /home/me/.ssh/known_hosts:38 Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?   I understand that this is the way a PTR record would be made on a Class A subnet (10.100.250.100 255.0.0.0) dnscmd /RecordAdd 10.in-addr.arpa. 100.250.100 PTR host.domain.tld To clarify the syntax, this is what it should be for a Class C subnet (192.168.1.100 255.255.255.0) dnscmd /RecordAdd 1.168.192.in-addr.arpa. 100 PTR host.domain.tld Is that right? Now how do I do this for a host with the IP address 172.31.111.210 on a 172.31.111.192/26 network? I'm not sure how to do this with a classless subnet mask.

  Hello, Experts. I've successfully installed VMware tools for Ubuntu. Everything seems to work fine, but shared folders were not mounted automatically. How do I get them to work? If I run vmware-hgfsclient in terminal, I get the list of shared folders, but ls -l /mnt/hgfs is empty. Actually there's no hgfs dir in /mnt. I know I should probably use the vmware-hgfsclient tool, but I realy don't know how. P.S. I wouldn't ask if I could understand the vmware-hgfsclient help I've read. Any suggestions?

If you logon to this site, you can login with the password and username to have access to your profile. There is another option that requires you to login to my site from your site and have your profile displayed within your site. This is because you might already have a site that your clients know you with. • Host grub error after installing Virtualbox - Non Recoverable

  I have been unable to fine a resolution to my problem and I have been suffering from it for a while. I can install Virtualbox and can reboot the machine successfully straight after. Once the system is back up I can run Virtualbox ans start working towards creating a new machine. So, say I am installing an XP machine. 1 time out of 10 it will work successfully first time. If it doesn't work (i.e BSOD), I delete the machine and start again. But when the time comes to finish up and switch off my computer, but it doesn't happen gracefully. As soon as I click shutdown, The machine dies. When the machine is switched back on I get: Error: no such device grub resuce I boot up my Grub Fix Live CD, but the grub reinstaller get stuck on searching for partitions, gparted just get stuck looking for devices and even fdisk -l drops a line and displays nothing and is the same. Stuck. The only way I know how to sort it is by re-installing Ubuntu. Has anyone had this problem, or know how to fix it?

Homework: this question is very similar to this one and this one, which aren't answered :( The challange - Can't run the corporate VPN client from the private computer, so converted the work laptop to a VMWare Virtual Machine. The VPN client is working fine inside the Guest VM, now we want to share it with the Host (the private computer) The specs: * The private computer (Host OS) is Mac OS X Lion 64bit * The corporate laptop (Guest VM) is WinXP 32bit, running in Bridged network mode * The VPN client on the Guest VM is is Checkpoint SecuRemote NGX R60 HFA03 * While the VPN is running in the Guest VM, the Host can still ping the Guest and vice versa

  I have a development setup from this tutorial: http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2009/10/27/build-your-own-dev-server-with-virtualbox/ But what I can't figure out is how to share a folder on my Ubuntu virtualized machine with the host Win7. I want to use a Windows text editor to edit code that's on my Ubuntu server. I've tried using the Shared Folders setting, adding "/var/www" but it says that the path is not absolute. When I click on "other", it only allows me to browse folders on my Win7 host. Both the host and guest are 64-bit OS. Thanks in advance!
