• .NET Reflector Pro T-shirt contest - and the winner is...

  Three weeks ago, I kicked off a T-shirt design contest. We've been eagerly poring over the results and today, it's finally announcement time! Although many of you raced to design some great t-shirts for us, we ended up with a clear winner who came up with a nice design and an original slogan that accurately represents what .NET Reflector Pro lets you do: decompile and debug C# and VB.NET code. So, the winner is... Mandeep Sangha! Mandeep sent us the following awesome design via the Twitter account, mss_10: We liked the combination of detective and superhero elements through the magnifying glass and the slogan. Batman (possibly the most eminent of detective-superheroes?) would be proud to wear this under his suit. • Windows CE and the Compact Framework are dead?

  This is one of the question that I’ve been asked more and more frequently at my public speeches and each time I meet customers. The announcement of the new Windows Phone 7 platform and the release of Visual Studio 2010 generated a bit of confusion around Windows CE and some of the technologies it supports. Windows CE is still alive and a lot of good programmers are working on the new releases (I had a chance to know some of them during the MVP summit in February). Here’s a blog post from Olivier Bloch that describes the situation and provides some good news about the OS: http://blogs.msdn.com/obloch/archive/2010/05/03/windows-ce-is-not-dead.aspx As you can read here, Windows Phone 7 keeps its “roots” inside Windows CE. • Disable Mailman Reminders

  We run a mailserver on OSX server, and a few mailing lists. The password/subscription reminds USED to come out at 8AM (local), but in the past months it's moved to 5AM, a nuisance to all involved. It would appear that mailman has been modified by Apple because there is no cronjob entry I can find that controls when these reminder notices come out, and I haven't found any launch agent/daemon plists that would control this ether. Nor have I found anything in the mailman configuration web pages. So... where are they?! Due to the specific-announcement style of use, they're a fairly worthless message to be originated, and they are a huge bother when announcing to support phones.

  Nokia’s alliance with Microsoft is likely to be good news for anyone using Microsoft technologies, and particularly for .NET developers. Before the announcement, the future wasn’t looking so bright for the ‘mobile’ version of Windows, Windows Phone. Microsoft currently has only 3.1% of the Smartphone market, even though it has been involved in it for longer than its main rivals. Windows Phone has now got the basics right, but that is hardly sufficient by itself to change its predicament significantly. With Nokia's help, it is possible. Despite the promise of multi-tasking for third party apps, integration with Microsoft platforms such as Xbox and Office, direct integration of Twitter support, and the introduction of IE 9 “later this year”, there have been frustratingly few signs of urgency on Microsoft’s part in improving the Windows Phone  product. Until this happens, there seems little prospect of reward for third-party developers brave enough to support the platform with applications. This is puzzling when one sees how well SQL Server and Microsoft’s other server technologies have thrived in recent years, under good leadership from a management that understands the technology. The same just hasn’t been true for some of the consumer products. In consequence, iPads and Android tablets have already exposed diehard Windows users, for the first time, to an alternative GUI for consumer Tablet PCs, and the comparisons aren’t always in Windows’ favour. Nokia’s problem is obvious: Android’s meteoric rise. Android now has 33% of the worldwide market for smartphones, while the market share of Nokia’s Symbian has dropped from 44% to 31%. As details of the agreement emerge, it would seem that Nokia will bring a great deal of expertise, such as imaging and Nokia Maps, to Windows Phone that should make it more competitive. It is wrong to assume that Nokia’s decline will continue: the shock of Android’s sudden rise could be enough to sting them back to their previous form, and they have Microsoft’s huge resources and marketing clout to help them. For the sake of the whole Windows stack, I really hope the alliance succeeds.

• TLS-SRP ciphersuites support in browsers

  i'm doing some research on how browsers support TLS-SRP (RFC5054). I know that TLS-SRP is implemented in GnuTLS, OpenSSL as of release 1.0.1, Apache mod_gnutls, cURL, TLS Lite and SecureBlackbox. I don't find any fresh source of information, only this from 2011: http://sim.ivi.co/2011/07/compare-tls-cipher-suites-for-web.html I'm testing them manually at the moment, but as far as i know nobody seems to support it. My interest is then in understanding if browsers are planning to support these ciphersuites in the future, apart from the current state. • Oracle ATG Ranked "Leader" Once Again In This Year's Gartner Magic Quadrant For E-Commerce

  Oracle ATG Web Commerce is in the top portion of the Leaders quadrant once again in this year's Gartner Magic Quadrant for E-Commerce, and gained in “ability to execute” over the 2010 version. Leaders are defined in this Magic Quadrant as technology providers that demonstrate the optimal blend of insight, innovation, execution and the ability to "see around the corner." Oracle ATG Web Commerce is a Leader because it has broadened its e-commerce capabilities with multisite management, a broader range of mobile devices supported and other additions, and Gartner points out ATG’s steady growth in revenue, market share and market visibility. Gartner notes that Oracle made the announcement regarding its acquisition of ATG in November 2010 and this has helped ATG with additional sales, marketing, R&D and global partnerships.Oracle ATG's latest release, Oracle ATG Commerce 10, provides several important enhancements, including multisite management, cross-channel campaign management and support for a broader range of mobile devices, with the addition of merchandising (including updates to the user interface) and promotions applications. The Magic Quadrant focuses on e-commerce for B2B and B2C across industry verticals, including retail, manufacturing, distribution, telecommunications, publishing, media, and financial services. • Why is NDA so hard to understand?

  Maybe this concept is simpler for me because of all the jobs I've been on over the years requiring security clearances. I've signed quite a few NDA forms. Some for big companies, some for small, but the meaning of "NDA" remains constant: Non-Disclosure Agreement. To me, that takes no further explanation, but apparently it's confusing to some people, and I don't understand how you can be confused. The papers I signed with the U.S. Army in 1970 read "10 years and $10,000" for a violation... can't imagine what it's up to now, but THAT is a strict NDA :) So those things I've been told, I cannot talk about, period. Even if the entire world knows about them, I cannot speak about them until the information goes off NDA. An example was a Silverlight release a while back. It might have been Silverlight 3, I don't remember. Everyone was anxiously awaiting the release so they could post their material. Of course the entire world knew it was coming out and imminently so. Some enterprising folks had even found the bits on a server before the official announcement. So then the situation became: everyone knew about it, some were even coding with it and blogging about it and yet we couldn't talk about it. Scott Guthrie's posting about it opened the flood gates and then it went off NDA, but up until that moment, we were locked. Sitting out on the edge you're uninstalling and re-installing all the time and you get frustrated when things that used to work don't, but hey... those bits were still warm when you got 'em, and that's the fun. • Should I Return My iPhone?

  got an iPhone 3G S about 20 days ago. That means I can return it no problem for the next 10 days. Should I return it, wait about 6 weeks, and get the iPhone 4.0 instead? I also put about $25 towards accessories but I could probably sell them for $15. Is it worth it not having it for those 6 weeks? Or should I just go with the free update, keep my screen protectors and case, and "survive" without the phone. What new features will come with the phone? My understanding is that most of the features will be part of the upgrade. My other option will probably be to give it back and then when they make the official announcement, buy the 3G S for maybe $99 if they drop the price that much.

• Linqpad and StreamInsight

  Slightly before the announcement of StreamInsight being available for Linqpad I downloaded it from here.  I had seen Roman Schindlauer demonstrate it at Teched and it looked a really good tool to do some StreamInsight dev.   You will need .Net 4.0 and StreamInsight installed. Here’s what you need to do after downloading and installing Linqpad. Add a new connection   The next thing we need to do is install and enable the StreamInsight driver.  Choose to view more drivers.   Choose StreamInsight     Select the driver after install     I have chosen the Default Context.     And after all that I can finally get to writing my query.  This is a very simple query where I turn a collection (IEnumerable) into a PointStream.  After doing that I create 30 minute windows over the stream before outputting the count of events in each of those windows to the result window.     I have played with Linqpad only a little but I think it is going to be a really good tool to get ideas developed and quickly.  I have also enabled Autcompletion (paid £25) and I recommend it.

• Museum of Modern Art Starts Video Game Collection; Acquires Myst, Pac-Man, and More

  The Museum of Modern Art is weighing in on the video-games-as-art debate by starting a collection of iconic video games and putting them up for public display. Read on to see what games are included in the initial batch and the MoMA’s reasons behind starting a video game collection. Although the MoMA is slated to grow to over 40 titles, the seed batch is 14 titles including: Pac-Man, Tetris, Sim City 2000, Myst, Portal, and Dwarf Fortress. In the announcement they explain the motivation for building a video game collection: Are video games art? They sure are, but they are also design, and a design approach is what we chose for this new foray into this universe. The games are selected as outstanding examples of interaction design—a field that MoMA has already explored and collected extensively, and one of the most important and oft-discussed expressions of contemporary design creativity. Our criteria, therefore, emphasize not only the visual quality and aesthetic experience of each game, but also the many other aspects—from the elegance of the code to the design of the player’s behavior—that pertain to interaction design. In order to develop an even stronger curatorial stance, over the past year and a half we have sought the advice of scholars, digital conservation and legal experts, historians, and critics, all of whom helped us refine not only the criteria and the wish list, but also the issues of acquisition, display, and conservation of digital artifacts that are made even more complex by the games’ interactive nature. This acquisition allows the Museum to study, preserve, and exhibit video games as part of its Architecture and Design collection.   One of the more exciting developments in the embedded systems world has been the announcement and availability of the Raspberry Pi, a very capable computer that is no bigger than a credit card.  At $35 US, initial demand for the device was so significant, that very long back orders quickly ensued. After months of patiently waiting, mine finally arrived.  Those initial growing pains appear to have been fixed, so availability now should be much more reasonable. At a very high level, here are some of the important specs: Broadcom BCM2835 System on a chip (SoC) ARM1176JZFS, with floating point, running at 700MHz Videocore 4 GPU capable of BluRay quality playback 256Mb RAM 2 USB ports and Ethernet Boots from SD card Linux distributions (e.g. Debian) available So what's taking place taking place with respect to the Java platform and Raspberry Pi? A Java SE Embedded binary suitable for the Raspberry Pi is available for download (Arm v6/7) here.  Note, this is based on the armel architecture, a variety of Arm designed to support floating point through a compatibility library that operates on more platforms, but can hamper performance.  In order to use this Java SE binary, select the available Debian distribution for your Raspberry Pi. The more recent Raspbian distribution is based on the armhf (hard float) architecture, which provides for more efficient hardware-based floating point operations.  However armhf is not binary compatible with armel.  As of the writing of this blog, Java SE Embedded binaries are not yet publicly available for the armhf-based Raspbian distro, but as mentioned in Henrik Stahl's blog, an armhf release is in the works. As demonstrated at the just-completed JavaOne 2012 San Francisco event, the graphics processing unit inside the Raspberry Pi is very capable indeed, and makes for an excellent candidate for JavaFX.  As such, plans also call for a Pi-optimized version of JavaFX in a future release too. A thriving community around the Raspberry Pi has developed at light speed, and as evidenced by the packed attendance at Pi-specific sessions at Java One 2012, the interest in Java for this platform is following suit. • Team Foundation Service Preview now open for all!

  The concept of TFS in the cloud was first presented back in early 2010, the product team worked hard to preview a constantly evolving solution at the BUILD conference last year and after having completed 31 Sprints today the preview service has been opened for all. No more invitation codes required, TfsPreview has been made public! “Since we announced the Team Foundation Service Preview at the BUILD conference last year, we’ve limited the on boarding of new customers by requiring invitation codes to create accounts.  The main reason for this has been to control the growth of the service to make sure it didn’t run away from us and end up with a bad user experience.  In this time period, we’ve continued to work on our infrastructure, performance, scale, monitoring, management and, of course, some cool new features like cloud build. ”   - Brian Harry Since the service is still in preview, it is free for all… If you haven’t, now is the best time to try out the offering.   Filtering the informative, insightful and quirky from the fire hose of cloud-based hype. Irving Wladawsky-Berger provides some great insight into The Complex Transition to the Cloud, sharing his views on the slow adoption of cloud computing in organizations. “…a prediction by the research firm Gartner that while cloud computing will continue to grow at almost 20 percent a year, it will account for less than 5 percent of totally IT spending in 2015.” With a more positive mindset, Balaji Viswanathan highlights 7 Salient Trends and Directions in Cloud Computing that could be shaping the industry over the next few years. Cloud computing also looks to save energy “A small business with 100 users that moved the Microsoft applications to the cloud could cut energy use and carbon emissions by 90%. Large organizations with 10,000 users saw a 30% reduction.” More on that story here. The expansion of Windows Azure has been in the news with the announcement of “East US” and “West US” datacenters; this was covered by Visual Studio Magazine and Mary-Jo, and according to thenextweb.com Microsoft are also building $112 million data center in Wyoming. The cloud price war is still in full swing with Joe Panettieri discussing the pricing of Windows Azure and Office 365 and asking How Low Can It Go?

• Explicitly pass context object versus injecting with IoC

  I have a layered service application where the service layer delegates operations into the domain layer for execution. Many of these operations need to know the context under which they are operation. (The context included the identity of the current user, culture information, etc. received from the caller.) For example, I have an API method that returns a list of announcements. The list is based on the current user's role and each announcement is localized to their culture. The API is a thin-facade that delegates to an Application Service in my domain layer. The Application Service method obviously needs to know the context of the current request/operation as another call to the same API from another user should result in a different list. Within this method, we also have logging that uses some of the context information so we a clear understanding of the context when the operation was performed (this is especially useful if something goes wrong.) While this is a contrived example, in the real world, my Application Services will coordinate operations with many collaborative components, any number of them also needing the context information. My choice is to pass the context to the Application Service which would then pass it with any calls to collaborators or have the IoC container satisfy the dependency the Application Service and any collaborators have on the context. I am wondering if it is considered good/bad, best practices/code smell, etc. if I pass the context object as a parameter to the domain methods or if injecting the context via an IoC container is preferred. (EDIT: I should mention that the context object is instantiated per-request.)

One announcement during the presentation was the plan to move m2e-wtp plugin into the m2e project at Eclipse. The project proposal was posted yesterday afternoon for those who are interested - http://www.eclipse.org/proposals/technology.m2e.m2e-wtp/. Jason said that m2e-wtp will not make it into the m2e Juno release but they expect the code to be transitioned over to Eclipse over the next six months. Getting the maven and wtp project models to play nicely together has been an issue for quite some time for our users. Hopefully this is a good step toward resolving those issues.
