• Should I give preferential treatment to proxy users on my ecommerce site?

  I am setting up an ecommerce site that caters to a worldwide audience. I would imagine that visitors would come from everywhere, and for whatever reasons, some would be connecting through proxy servers. My site uses a server that is configured to rate limit connections from the same ip address to protect itself from a DOS attack. So, if a proxy server is heavily used by my visitors, then it would appear to be a DOS. This is problematic in a sense that it is hard to tell whether the users are genuinely browsing my site or if a DOS is taking place. So my question is, should I give preferential treatment to proxy users on my ecommerce site? If yes, how should this be done. If not, why not?

  Hi, I presented a talk on Windows Phone 7 @ MoMo and got awesome response, even though WP7 is quite new still. I also demoed 2 applications on both emulator and the actual device. It enjoy the look on audience faces when they see the app actually work on actual device. I see a great opportunity on WP7 and everyone I met agrees on the fact the WP7 has a very bright future ahead. The Ecosystem which WP7 has (developing/ debugging tools, emulator, almost flat learning curve,  office/sharepoint integration a lively forum, marketplace) makes it a major player in mobile, already. • How does a government development shop transition to developing open source solutions?

  Our shop has identified several reasons why releasing our software solutions to the open source community would be a good idea. However, there are several reasons from a business stand point why converting our shop to open source would be questioned. I need help from anyone out there who has gone through this transition, or is in the process. Specifically a government entity. About our shop: - We develop and support web and client applications for the local law enforcement community. - We are NOT a private company, rather a public sector entity Some questions that tend to come about when we have this discussion are: We're a government agency, so isn't our code already public? How do we protect ourselves from being 'hacked' if someone looks into our code? (There are obvious answers to this question like making sure you don't hard code passwords, etc. However, the discussion needs to consider an audience of executives who are very security conscience.)

• What are the tactics used to discover what kind of affiliate products will do well in your website?

  I'm starting to post some affiliate ads on my website. As it happens, I am not even close to making a sale. I'm not sure if the products I have chosen will appeal to the audience I have. I'm not sure if the volume of traffic is enough to support affiliate programs. I get about 8000-9000 visitors everyday. But since its growing constantly, thats not much of a worry. But I'm surely struggling to figure out what kind of products to market? (its a techie site). Is there a service/tool which can analyze the website and suggest what products will do well and what won't?

  Are there any tools available for the following use case: I am planning to write a complex application and now I just know about the basic functional requirments. I am refining the functionality with more and more details. I am also writing down how to implement this in software architecture perspective. I am in a situation where there are multiple ways implement a certain functionality and based on the selected approach, other parts of the program will also change. At this moment, I don't want to decide on the approach to use, I just want to list down all the options, present to a wider audience and get it finalized. • Identical spam coming from many different (but similar) IP addresses

  A forum I run has been the victim of spam user accounts recently - several accounts that have been registered and the profile fill with advertising/links. All of this is for the same company, or group of companies. I deleted several accounts weeks ago and blocked some IP addresses, but today they have come back with the same spam. Every account has a different IP address, but they are all of the form 122.179.*.* or 122.169.*.*. I am considering blocking those two IP ranges, but there are potentially thousands of IPs in that range. They appear to be assigned to India (although the spam is for an American company) so given the site is for a western, English-speaking audience maybe it doesn't matter. My questions: How are they posting on so many IPs? Is there likely to be a limit to the number of IPs they have access to? Is there anything else I can do at the IP-level to block them? (I am looking into other measures like blocking usernames/links.)

  I still remember one of my high school teachers lecturing us about the "web safe colors". A set of 216-256 colors that you should confine your designs to use, and nothing else besides them. Last I knew, Photoshop still has the "web safe" yield icon[1] on it's color picker. Are web safe colors still a concern? Outside of the obvious application (accessibility, legacy software versions, etc.), how much consideration should I give to limiting my color choice for my general audience? [1] Or was it the cube?   My first post.  Working with Google Analytics (GA).  What an incredible tool this is for those that are wanting to know about their site traffic.  GA allows the user to drill down to the screen size of any mobile sources that came in contact with his site.  The user is even able to know region demographics of visitors and the types of browsers and languages being used.  This is a great tool to help determine your target audience and what direction of growth one may be needing to take.GA has Real-Time currently in beta but it already allows the user to see some information.  I can already detect that I am viewing my site from Louisville, KY and what page of my site is being accessed.  I highly recommend using GA for the sheer plethora of data available.

• Background image layout issue

  A client wants to have an image that takes up entire screen, on mouse over the menu would appear. The problem is the height vertical alignment for various screen sizes....What would be the most common sleek looking solution to this issue?
