Ideally I want to design the template in a "publishing like" tool with placeholders and replace these placeholders by the web application with the data from the database.     I was thinking about hosting my private project on my server (i may use 'gitolite') and have a copy on my local machine as backup (git clone then automated git fetch every few minute). I want to know what happens if there is a bug gitolite or somewhere else on my server and the source code and git repository has been tampered with? Will my backup also be corrupted? will i easily be able to revert the source using the history?

    Hey, I am not sure if this is a fitting question for gamedev, or if it is too art related. I am currently trying, to create 2D character protraits for my game. At first I tried to draw them and even though it helped polishing my drawing skills the end result either required way too much time or it simply looked like it was created by a grade school kid. So I am currently looking into some tools which from which people like me who are not out of the art-world might benefit. Especially tools which can create a 3D head+hair, so that I can render them. I have tried several 3D generation tools such as makehead and makehuman to create the basic head-shape. But I have to admit I am not well versed in what other options are available/what has the best quality/etc.

    I am personalising my Gnome-Shell in Ubuntu 11.10 I would like to disable the feature to open the Gnome's Dashboard when I close the last Window in a Workspace. Edit to clarify: The dashboard is available only in GNOME Shell. The dashboard opens if you press the windows key (aka SUPER) or if you move the mouse to the upper left corner. If you close the last window of a workspace, but there are open windows on other workspaces, the dashboard opens automatically. The latter behaviour is annoying if you do not want to use the dashboard to open new windows or to change workspace. There are many ways to to both (Gnome do, Docky, keyboard shortcuts, clicking on something on the desktop, ...).     I always wanted to use randomly generated strings for my resources' IDs, so I could have shorter URLs like this: /user/4jz0k1 But I never did, because I was worried about the random string generation creating actual words, eg: /user/f*cker. This brings two problems: it might be confusing or even offensive for users, and it could mess with the SEO too. Then I thought all I had to do was to set up a fixed pattern like adding a number every 2 letters. I was very happy with my 'generate_safe_uuid' method, but then I realized it was only better for SEO, and worse for users, because it increased the ratio of actual words being generated, eg: /user/g4yd1ck5 Now I'm thinking I could create a method 'replace_numbers_with_letters', and check that it haven't formed any words against a dictionary or something. Any other ideas? ps. As I write this, I also realized that checking for words in more than one language (eg: english and french, spanish, etc) would be a mess, and I'm starting to love numbers-only IDs again.

  • Auto mount USB drive with permissions for all users

    I have an Ubuntu 14.04 based Media Center and I store the media files on a USB HDD. I add files to drive directly on a Mac so I have it formatted as FAT32. The problem is that after reconnecting the drive to the Ubuntu, it mounts at /media/user/drivename and only the root user is allowed access. I need several applications to have full access to this drive. I can change file permissions in the terminal but it doesn't change because of the /media/user location. I am able to manually sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /media/drivename & sudo chmod 777 /media/drivename but the mount point changes each time. Is there a way to make this drive always mount where root and other applications have access?

  • Algorithm to generate N random numbers between A and B which sum up to X

    This problem seemed like something which should be solvable with but a few lines of code. Unfortunately, once I actually started to write the thing, I've realized it's not as simple as it sounds. What I need is a set of X random numbers, each of which is between A and B and they all add up to X. The exact variables for the problem I'm facing seem to be even simpler: I need 5 numbers, between -1 and 1 (note: these are decimal numbers), which add up to 1. My initial "few lines of code, should be easy" approach was to randomize 4 numbers between -1 and 1 (which is simple enough), and then make the last one 1-(sum of previous numbers). This quickly proved wrong, as the last number could just as well be larger than 1 or smaller than -1. What would be the best way to approach this problem? PS. Just for reference: I'm using C#, but I don't think it matters. I'm actually having trouble creating a good enough solution for the problem in my head.

    So suppose we stand on a position(x0, y0) of a map. We can only move on the horizontal plane(no jump and stuff) but we can move forward, left, or right (in a discrete math way, i.e. integer movement). As soon as we move to the next position(x1, y1), everything around us is generated randomly by a program. We could be surrounded by one of mountain, lake, and road. We can only move on the road. The road is always 2D as the map itself. My question is, are we able to play this game endlessly? "End" means that we come across a dead end and the only way out is to go backward.

    im trying create cards matching game. normally these type of games they match paired cards together (with the same file name "A.jpg with A.jpg") but in my case, im matching cards with different names "B.jpg with A.jpg" (correct), "C.jpg with D.jpg" (correct) but with "B.jpg with C.jpg" (incorrect answer). A.jpg-B.jpg <--correct C.jpg-D.jpg <--correct E.jpg-F.jpg <--correct i face a problem when i generate the cards in random. I manage to generate random cards but i dont manage to generate it with their paired onces. Below is an illustration of the problem A.jpg-B.jpg <--correct C.jpg-F.jpg <--incorrect so how should i code it so that it always generate with their paired onces, so that my game can proceed?

  • How can I enable auto-updates in a Qt cross-platform app?

    I love applications that are able to update themselves without any effort from the user (think: Sparkle framework for Mac). Is there any code/library I can leverage to do this in a Qt app, without having to worry about the OS details? At least for Windows/Mac/user-owned-linux-binaries. I could integrate Sparkle on the Mac version, code something for the linux case (only for a standalone, user-owned binary; I won't mess with distros packaging, if my program is ever packaged), and find someone to help me on the Windows side, but that's horribly painful. Surely I'm not the only one who wants to provide this to users?
