• Crashes and freezes after fixing "BOOTMGR is missing" error

  I came back from a 3-day weekend to a computer that was off. I leave my PC on 24/7, so this was odd. Turn it on to get the dreaded "BOOTMGR is missing" screen. Two attempts at Windows Recovery and it booted into Windows fine. After an hour or so, I get a frozen Chrome and my start bar disappears. Ctrl+Alt+Del brings up an error box telling me that Ctrl+Alt+Del failed to work properly. Clicking on any open application triggers an error (I can't recall the error now, but it essentially just said that the application couldn't be found running or something along those lines). I restart, and again, the same thing happens after a while of use. I turn it on, install the 47 updates I have or so, and then restart it. After a while of use (under an hour), it just freezes completely. My thoughts are: SSDs, RAM or PS. My system specs below: (RAID0) 2 x Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CML16GX3M4A1600C9 CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active 1 x ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z/GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard 1 x Hitachi GST Deskstar 7K1000.C 0F10383 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive 1 x Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 1 x SAPPHIRE 21197-00-40G Radeon HD 7970 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card 1 x Noctua NH-D14 120mm & 140mm SSO CPU Cooler This is all crammed in a pretty small case (NZXT Vulcan) and has been running perfectly problem-free since January. The only thing out of the ordinary is that there is a fan in the case that is now making noise whereas the case has previously been completely silent. I have no reason to believe this is anything more then correlation, but felt it is worth mentioning. I believe it MAY be the SSDs simply because of the BOOTMGR error, but not sure how to test that theory. My belief that it may be the RAM is simply from experience with frozen machines. I haven't had the time to memtest it, but will. The PS being the culprit is something I've picked up by reading similar threads on various forums, and it seems plausible. I am unsure how to test this though. ANY insight whatsover would be greatly appreciated!

• Fixing mac user file permissions, not the system

  Usually those files get wrong permission when coming from the network, even when I copy them from it, but mostly through "file sharing". So, definitely not talking about Disk Utility repair here, please. But regardless of how the file got wrong permission, I know of two bad ways to fix them. One is CMD+I and the other is chown / chmod. The command line isn't all bad but isn't practical either. Some times it's just 1 file I need to repair, sometimes it's a bunch of them. By "repair" I mean 644 for files, 755 for folders, and current user:group for all of them. Isn't there any app / script / automator out there to do that?

• MAMP Pro .xip.io, fixing urls with htaccess

  I've got all my websites set up with MAMP Pro. For instance, I got it set up, so when I go to example.com, the browser displays the website that's set up on my iMac. Now, I wanna get MAMP Pro to work so I can view my website on my other computers/devices (which are all hooked up on the same network.) So far all I had to do is check the checkbox "via Xip.io (LAN only)", and now I can view my website on my other computers/devices within my LAN by simply going to example.com.10.0.1.13.xip.io. Problem is, whenever I'm on this other computer/device, when I click on the links, I get 404 error. ie. whenever I go to example.com/news, I get the 404. But when I go to example.com.10.0.1.13.xip.io/news, THEN I get the right page. So in order to solve my problem I need to rewrite the urls. So whenever someone clicks on a link ie. goes straight to example.com/news, he'll go to example.com.10.0.1.13.xip.io/news. I don't want to change all the links in my MySQL file, but I believe I can do it simply with the htaccess file. I have a partion called Server and inside it i have 5 folders like Folder 1 FOlder 2 Folder 3 I am mounting the drive on startup by using following command as told to me by some senoir members and it works but with some problems /dev/sdb1 /media/Server ntfs defaults,umask=006,fmask=000,dmask=007,uid=1000,gid=1001 0 0 The problem is with this command the permission are applied to all folders like Folder 1 , Folder 2 , FOlder3 But i want that only FOlder 3 should be publicly readable and writable while all other should be private and no one should have access to that. How can i achieve that

• Fixing a typo in machine name

  When i installed windows i had a typo in the machine name that i corrected from the system's 'Computer Name/Domain Changes' - the workstation is a member of a workgroup not a domain. From everything i can see the renamed machine name is correct. Shift gears.... I'm importing SQL logins from my remote server to this, my development workstation and have used the script presented here - a script that generates a CREATE statement for each login found. While I was preparing to run this script's output (from the remote box) i needed to change the domain name from the remote to my local's name - so i ran the same script locally (in order to see what SQL things my domain name is. SQL has the original machine name - the one with the typo. However, the scripts are tossing errors if i try to create logins with that identifier. CREATE LOGIN [Setve\Admin] FROM WINDOWS WITH DEFAULT_DATABASE = [master] But works correctly if i use the updated machine name: CREATE LOGIN [Steve\Admin] FROM WINDOWS WITH DEFAULT_DATABASE = [master] So the problem is: do i have a problem i need to solve? Somewhere, deep in the guts of SQL Server, it has record of a Domain name that does not exist. Should i find and fix that discrepancy? thx

• Fixing/Extending Standard Windows File Open/Save Dialog [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Change left side link of the Save As Dialog for a DropBox one? Almost every time I use the standard Windows (XP) File Open/Save Dialog I get frustrated in how long it takes me to navigate to where I want to go. :-( (I won't even get into the MS Office dialog that makes things even worse) This is the dialog I'm referring to (with some notes) Notes: Wouldn't a Drive list be handy in here? C:\, D:\, E:\, etc. What about a breadcrumb URI? (the magenta list of links) Why isn't Program Files one of the icons on the left? (green) I'm always going in there for something Why can't I type "../../../" to navigate up multiple directories in the File name box? (blue) There has got to be some utilities out there that can "hijack" or "overwrite" this core windows dialog to provide a much better set of options. I'm looking for any/all solutions to help fix this dialog.

• Fixing restore active desktop on windows xp

All I know is that the computer crashed from a power outage. I've tried clicking the restore button and rebooting. Nothing. What else is there to try? Would like to have the desktop back. It powers on fine. I can login and use windows just fine. Just you get that annoying restore active desktop screen.

  I bought a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, and setup Ubuntu 10.04 to dual boot alongside Windows 7. Regrettably, when activating the wireless, I did something in Windows 7 that caused it to overwrite or corrupt the master boot record, so now when I reboot I get the message "No bootable devices found". Is there an easy way to fix this, perhaps via a Linux LiveCD, or do I have to wipe out everything and reinstall?

• Website visitors are still being redirected after "fixing" the damage from a conditional redirect website attack

  BACKGROUND A website of mine was recently the target of a conditional redirect attack. PHP code was added to my pages to redirect visitors. The .htaccess file was edited to redirect visitors. I've re-uploaded my website so the compromised PHP and .htaccess code have both been removed. My site is mostly handwritten php and static HTML content. I don't use page comments or any third party libraries. THE PROBLEM After removing the compromised php and htaccess files, visitors are still being re-directed. What could be the reason that visitors are still being redirected? Are there any tools to check where/how redirects are taking place so I can debug the problem? UPDATE - PROBLEM FIXED As suggested in the comments, I cleared my Firefox cache and that fixed the problem (for me anyway). Visitors with old cache data will obviously still be re-directed.

• Fixing Outlook 2010's notorious 'Disabled Search Indexer' Add-in problem

  I have been impressed with the improvements in search introduced in Outlook 2010. Unfortunately, in the last week search has stopped working for me. I have tried all the obvious repair tasks such as repairing office, disabling all add-ins, rebuilding the index, compacting the PST, but no luck. It appears that 'mssphtb.dll' (Used by search) keeps crashing and as a result Outlook Disables it. I have tried re-enabling it, but Outlook immediately disables it again. I have had a look in the Windows Event Log as well, but Outlook does not appear to log any errors that occur when loading add-ins. A lot of people appear to have the same problem, but no fixes so far. I am considering installing Xobni, but I prefer to make Outlook work the way it is supposed to and not rely on 3rd party applications.

I received the error message: rndc: connection to remote host closed This may indicate that the remote server is using an older version of the command protocol, this host is not authorized to connect, or the key is invalid How can I troubleshoot / repair this? I copied parts of the BIND config from a failing server, so I suspect that's what causing it...

• Fixing a corrupted Windows Server 2003 server

  I have a Windows Server 2003 server that is being mainly used for some reporting done in SQL Server. Recently Windows has started complaining about being corrupted, we are getting an NTFS error 55: The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolume1. The server is RAID 5 and I did have a disk die however the RAID never went degraded since I have a hotspare. I replaced the hot spare and I'm still having problems. When I run chkdsk I get tons of messages.. some are: Deleting corrupted attribute record (128, "") from file record segment 194746 Those go on for a while. Then it deletes some orphan files. Then it does Correcting error in index $I30 for file 132426 And that goes on for a while. Then I get tons of Recovering orphaned file RE1AB6~1.LOG into directory file 534959 I have seen a lot of errors relating to the SQL Server reporting services. What are my options at this point? I would prefer to fix the issue instead of building a new server but I don't know if I can at this point.

  Hey, I just got onto a new project with the student government at my University and we're trying to get our webserver into a more workable state. The current problem is that all of us for some reason have sudo power on the server, but we can't write/create files anywhere on the server (as far as we can tell) currently. Our groups are currently as follows: /srv/ice/db$ groups goshri sshamim rmenezes goshri : goshri sshamim : sshamim ptx rmenezes : rmenezes ptx daifotis : daifotis ptx We added a few of us to ptx because we thought that might give us write access but it didn't. We have a bunch of webapps running on this server but since it's university things change hands quickly. What can we do to give us read access?

• Last step in HDD Recovery (fixing windows)

  My dad’s hard drive corrupted which was a result of many bad sectors. Anyway, I made a clone of the drive and have now repaired it totally (recreating the MBR and MFT) and doing a series of ChkDsk's on it. I can now see all the files and folder on it and it is all intact. I currently have it as a slave in my computer (where I was doing all the repairs). When putting it back into the computer, it comes up with "A disk read error occurred: Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to Restart". I don’t know why this is happening but think it might have something to do with file permissions. I have tried a start-up recovery on the Vista boot CD and it found no problems. When trying to apply file permissions (and creating file perms for the SYSTEM group (as it didn’t have any for SYSTEM group)) it couldn't apply them for some of the System32 folder files. I have tried applying them as admin and with as powerful privileges I can get. All to no avail. When it is in my PC I can boot it up (I added it into my bootloader) and it boots up fine except when it logs in it comes up with the error - "Rundll32.exe - Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" This message keeps coming back and nothing loads at all. Any help would be greatly received as I have got so far with the data recovery and want to avoid a reformat at all costs due to the vast number of programs installed and I don’t have much time on my hands! I would like them to fill in text in the blank spaces, but without the page shifting down as they type (so in essence they would have a fixed space to enter their answers).   I tried to upgrade a laptop to SP3, which broke it. I later found out SP3 doesn't work on that 2002 laptop. I can't uninstall SP3, or fix SP2, because the hard drive is now not detected during setup (I've read that's the problem you get). I put the hard drive in a USB drive case and plugged it into my other laptop, and I can read (& write to) the disk okay. (The hard drive won't fit in my other laptop, so I'm using USB.) I need to get that disk back to SP2, or fix whatever files got screwed up causing the disk to not be recognized. I don't want to do a re-install as there are 80GB of files on it I need, and they won't fit on the HD of my other laptop, and also because I no longer have some of the install CDs for software on it. What do I need to do to fix that drive from my other laptop? (I don't want my working laptop (XP SP3) to get screwed with by putting an SP2 disk in the CD drive, or the non-o/s data on the other hard drive screwed with.)

• Fixing Windows 7 explorer issues

  OK, so here is the problem I'm hoping you guys can help me fix. On my Win7-Ult64 box, my explorer (among other things) has decided not to work. For example, if I try to use a program, say Chrome, to open a folder, I will get the message "Class not registered" (and its not program specific). In the same vein, when I go to Start-Rclick Computer-properties, nothing happens, but I can go to control panel-system properties and it will work. And other items in the control panel do nothing when I click them (and I have a feeling it is all tied together). I have already done multiple virus and spyware sweeps, so I know that isn't the problem. Any suggestions on what could be causing this/how to fix it (short of nuke and boot)?

• Fixing bent pins on a CPU

  While replacing a mainboard in a desktop machine (see related question), I did something stupid. I inserted the CPU into the new mainboard, but didn't check for the right position. When it didn't immediately lock in, I pressed slightly before realizing what was wrong. The result was a number of bent pins. I tried every tutorial that popped up when Googling "CPU bent pins" - using credit cards, sewing needles, and a hunting knife to get the pins back into position - but to no avail: For every pin I get straightened out, two others are bent. I have no problem getting individual pins straightened out, but my many attempts have led to many pins being slightly askew - enough for the CPU not to fit into the socket (An AMD X3 one). Maybe I just lack the motoric finesse. What I would need is some sort of a grid to fix all pins at once. It's a €50 processor so the loss is not catastrophic. But I thought before I go buy a new one, I thought I'd check here whether anybody knows some magic trick, or a cheap generally-available tool to fix this.

  When a bug is fixed, the dev set its status to "resolved" and the bug is reassigned back to the person that created it. In our case this is usually the product owner - we don't have dedicated testers. But what's a good process for controlling how/when the PO tests the software? Should he be given the latest build after each bug is resolved/checked-in? Or what about every morning? Or should he only receive a build at (or close to) the end of the iteration, to include all of that iteration's new functionality and bug fixes? We are using TFS by the way.

  Nevrona Designs' Rave Reports is a Report Engine for use by Embarcadero's Delphi IDE. This is what I call the Rave Endless Loop bug. In Rave Reports version 6.5.0 (VCL10) that comes bundled with Delphi 2006, there is a nortorious bug that plagues many Rave report developers. If you have a non-empty dataset, and the data rows for this dataset fit exactly into a page (that is to say there are zero widow rows), then upon PrintPreview, Rave will get stuck in an infinite loop generating pages. This problem has been previously reported in this newsgroup under the following headings: "error: generating infinite pages"; Hugo Hiram 20/9/2006 8:44PM "Rave loop bug. This posting did get a reply from Nevrona, but it was more in relation to multiple regions ("There is a problem when using multiple regions that go over a page-break.") than the problem of zero widows.

• Fixing Unicode Oops

  It seems that we have managed to insert into our database 2 unicode characters for each of the unicode characters we want, For example, for the unicde char 0x3CBC, we've inserted the unicode equivalents for each of it's components (0xC383 AND 0xC2BC) Can anyone think of a simple solution for fixing this? I've come up with something like SELECT replace(name, CONCAT(0xC3,0x83,0xc2,0xbc), CONCAT(0xc3,0xbc)) FROM lang For the above, but don't want to have to do this for every unicode character!
