• Lag in Windows 7 with Zepto Znote 6224W

  Hi! Why does my Zepto Znote 6224W Laptop with Windows 7 make these small laggy moves whenever I use it? First I installed Windows 7 64 bit because of the memorycap in Windows 7 32 bit, but soon I realized that the system was lagging randomly. It was very annoying whenever I listened to music, because of the sudden lags. Then I tried everything with drivers; Chipset, Soundcard, Graphicscard, and so on. No luck. I then installed Windows 7 32 bit and this reduced the amount of lags but they are still here. I haven't tried bios upgrade since my bios should be newest according to now the now bankrupt Zepto company. My specifications: Zepto Znote 6224W Intel T8300 Intel Chipset PM965 PC-5300 4gb Nvidia 8600M GT Zepto's rebranded bios: Phoenix Technologies LTD Z14ND06 - Date: 12/20/2007 Harddrive: 320 GB 5400 RPM which I replaced with a Kingston SSDnow 40 GB. No luck either. I haven't tried Windows Vista on the machine though, but I would like to keep Windows 7.

  Hi, I have Dell Studio 540 desktop and Debian Lenny installed on it: 2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Mar 9 22:29:32 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux The problem is that I can't reboot it. It just hangs after "Will now restart" message. I've already tried: reboot=b, reboot=a, reboot=h kernel options. Nothing helps. • Linux: prevent VNC from swapping like mad

  I'm accessing a MacMini (with MacOS X 10.4) from my Linux machine using VNC and there's an issue that is driving me crazy... My Linux machine has 4 GB of ram and I run a lot of various apps on it and I've got no issue at all. It's all snappy and don't hear the hard disk swapping/read/writing too often. Now with VNC, the hard disk is swapping like mad... When I'm moving things on the OS X desktop. So I was thinking of creating a ramdisk and forcing the temp VNC files to go into that ramdisk but the problem is I can't find any temp files. I've attempted to do that: #!/bin/bash while [ true ] do lsof | grep vnc done And eyeball parse the output to try to find some temp file: no luck. The VNC version I'm using is this one: $ vncviewer -version VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.1 for X - built Jan 30 2009 19:33:16 Copyright (C) 2002-2005 RealVNC Ltd. No matter how much data is coming from the Mac, there should be plenty of memory (4 GB of ram) so there's really no reason to swap like crazy. This is driving me mad. Any help as to how I could solve this problem is most welcome because this is literally driving me nuts.

• The RTL8111/8168B NIC under Linux and the r8168 driver

  So I've got one of the infamous R8168 Realtek ethernet NIC, which have some problems under Linux. After some research, I found out I had to use the r8168 driver for this card (and not the r8169 which still loads when nothing else is available), which I did. So now everything works fine... Sort of. My download and upload rates are more than halved compared to what I should get. When I test (with eg. speedtest) I get something like 20M (often 15M) in download and 30M in upload, but if I test under Windows (everything is otherwise identical: same ethernet cable, same connection, at the same time of the day (well 5 min apart)...), I get 50M upload/download (which is what I expect). • Setting my NIC to full duplex

  I am trying to optimize the network speed of my Solaris X86 server, and have discovered that the Cisco 3548 that it is connected to has issues with the NIC in my server. The NIC appears to have not been configured fully, and is coming up 100 half-duplex. The 3548 ports are all set to 100 full. Ideally I'd like to have the server set for 100 full, and have been attempting to configure it using ndd commands. However I have had no results. The following command: -bash-3.00# dladm show-dev rtls0 link: unknown speed: 100 Mbps duplex: unknown The NIC shows up as: pci bus 0x0001 cardnum 0x06 function 0x00: vendor 0x10ec device 0x8139 Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ which should be configurable. I have modified the configuration file from auto config (5) to 100 fdx (4) to no avail. If there is no other choice, I could alter the Cisco 3548 to be 100 half-duplex. However, this solution causes huge performance loss. Currently throughput is about 500Kbps, when it should be around 40Mbps.

  I have a bit slow PC here, so I decided to put Ubuntu 11.04 on it. It use to run Windows Vista on a resolution of 1280x1024, so both my hardware and monitor support it. Now I'm on Ubuntu, but can only run 1024x768, and the screen is not that bright. Its like when you don't have the right drivers on a Windows machine.   I'm trying to setup Pystromo so that I can remap the keys on my Belkin N52TE gamepad. Pystromo basically captures the key strokes and then outputs the remapped keystrokes to the uinput device. However, at the moment it simply swallows the input and outputs absolutely nothing. I've tracked the issue to something being wrong with my uinput device, with the smoking gun being: # ls -l /dev/input/uinput crw-rw---- 1 root plugdev 10, 223 Dec 31 2009 /dev/input/uinput # cat /dev/input/uinput cat: /dev/input/uinput: No such device The uinput module is loaded, and can be clearly seen via lsmod. Anyone seen this before, or can think of something worth attempting? • Performance: Nginx SSL slowness or just SSL slowness in general?

  I have an Amazon Web Services setup with an Apache instance behind Nginx with Nginx handling SSL and serving everything but the .php pages. In my ApacheBench tests I'm seeing this for my most expensive API call (which cache via Memcached): 100 concurrent calls to API call (http): 115ms (median) 260ms (max) 100 concurrent calls to API call (https): 6.1s (median) 11.9s (max) I've done a bit of research, disabled the most expensive SSL ciphers and enabled SSL caching (I know it doesn't help in this particular test.) Can you tell me why my SSL is taking so long? I've set up a massive EC2 server with 8CPUs and even applying consistent load to it only brings it up to 50% total CPU. I have 8 Nginx workers set and a bunch of Apache. Currently this whole setup is on one EC2 box but I plan to split it up and load balance it. There have been a few questions on this topic but none of those answers (disable expensive ciphers, cache ssl, seem to do anything.) I had to remove the cache directory as I was testing something. Remade it, re-set permissions and found that eAccelerator was no longer creating cache files within the folder. I thought it might be down to ownership rights on the folder so chown'd it apache.apache and this made no difference. I recreated the directory in /var/cache instead and editted php.ini to point to the new cache dir location, chmod'd, chown'd etc. and still eAccelerator is not creating any of the cache files in the directory (just empty). Could someone suggest what I might be doing incorrectly here. I've read through numerous pages to try and troubleshoot the issue to no avail. Any help appreciated.

  My problem comes from that my laptop [PB TJ-75] has a faulty Alcor card reader. It’s 100% sure, the device is dead and unusable whatever the OS is. It cannot be disabled in BIOS [latest: Vendor: Phoenix Technologies LTD Version: V1.26 Release Date: 05/04/2010]. If I could take it apart from the main board easily, and if with that, the system would never look again for it, I’ll be very happy! Is it possible, has anyone ever tried this? Or maybe, replacing the BIOS with a more open one, which let you disable the card reader. Does this exists? Here's what I've tried to disable it so far. In Win7, I choose ‘disable’ in device manager and that’s ok. If not, the device keeps on appearing and disappearing and lot of resources are used. In Lubuntu 13.04, I got extra boot time, with the msg:'sdb, assuming drive cache, etc.’ I tried other distros (isos booted by grub). I can boot Puppy, Gparted, and Redobackup apparently without any problem. I cannot boot Debian, live or install + tried Crunchbang and Tails. I got a loop :’usb device, scsi n+1 blabla‘. I tried "nousb", no result, I have blacklisted EHCI, no result, then usb_storage module, better boot time in Lubuntu, with just the message "...data transfer failed", better shutdown time too. But, no way to use usb storage medias. In Debian, it ends with BusyBox prompt. Is it possible to just disable that Alcor card reader? Does it have a specific module? Is there a special kernel boot option that I missed? Does it have something to do with kernel recompiling, and if yes, how to do with isos? Programming a driver which says everything is ok (out of my comprehension for the moment)? Disabling device by vendor id? What is the best way?

• Power issues Foxconn Barebones kit

  I have a Foxconn R20D2 bought about a year and a half ago. It ran fine for a while and then around last summer it started having power issues. I chalked it up to changes in electric current due to the overwhelmed grid when people turn on their AC units, but this problem has stayed for all year, shutting off randomly, shutting off when i turn on a vacuum and similar problems. Now that its summer again, the box basically sits there all day cycling itself, and now has gotten to the point it tried to boot and after 3 seconds, fails, shuts off and tried again. I know its power related, it runs opensuse linux and there are never any shutdown logs or anything of that sort. As the weather got hotter i noticed it happening more and more, and it most often happened in the morning, i presume as people woke up and turn on the AC. The power supply is a Chennel well technology co LTD model DSL-150. 150W max output. Its an intel atom dual core, with 2 sata drives, no CD/floppy etc, recently upgrades from 2 to 4gb of ram. It runs at 104 degrees Fahrenheit all the time almost. Any way i can test the power supply or anything else to try to fix it? Im a software guy, not hardware so im at a complete loss here, thanks for all assistance you can provide! EDIT: The switch on the back that says 230 or 115 is set to 230. If im in the USA, could that be causing the problems?

• CD/DVD Drive not detecting locally burned CD/DVDs, but works fine with Genuine discs.

  I'm using Dell Inspiron 1420 - 32 Bit - Windows Vista, since 2.5 years. I'm facing a strange problem with my CD/DVD-drive. I cannot run/play a CD/DVD which I get burned from my friends. But when I insert Genuine CD, I'm able to play/run it. And when I try to install my Vista package which I got with my notebook, the CD/DVD gets loaded. If I insert a CD/DVD which I get from my friend, CD doesn't get loaded and the system gets hanged. But all these CDs/DVDs work on other systems. I've tested it on many of my friends PCs. So, now I'm able to run only genuine CDs & a few genuine DVDs. My Experience/Experiments: I tried to install Windows Vista using Genuine DVD - It worked I tried to install Ubuntu which I got from shipped from Canonical Ltd. - It worked I tried to install OpenSUSE .iso file burned to a DVD in my friend's PC - It didn't work for me (But working perfectly fine in my friends PCs(Tested in 4 other PCs) Tried to play a DVD containing movies, burned in my friend's PC - It didn't work for me (But working perfectly fine in my friends PCs Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. • Ubuntu 10.04 network manager issues

  I was using the default network manager to connect to my wi-fi network, but if the connection is dropped or router restarted the network manager wont reconnect automatically after i guess a couple of tries and just gives a pop-up to connect manually . To avoid this annoyance I installed WICD but though it does try to reconnect to the network after a drop in connection it is unable to resolve the ip address and i am left with an even bigger annoyance . 1. Is there a way to counter either of these issues ? 2. Something like a background process that will check network status periodically and then try to connect to a favored network ? • PC hangs and reboots from time to time

  Hello, I have a very strange problem: Since I have my new PC, I have always had problems with it. From time to time the computer freezes for some seconds and suddendly reboots by itself. I've had this problem since Ubuntu 9.10. The same with 10.04 and 10.10. That's why I don't think it's a software failure because the problem persist too long. It doesn't have anything to do with what I'm doing at this time. Sometimes I listen to music, sometimes I only use Firefox, sometimes I'm running 2 or 3 VMs, sometimes I watch DVD. So it's not isolatable. I could freeze once a day or once a week. I put the PC to the vendor twice(!). The first time they changed my power supply but the problem persisted. The second time they told me that they made some heavy performance tests 50 hours long but they didn't find anything. (How can that be that I have daily freezes with normal usage). The vendor didn't check the hard discs because they used their own disc with Windows. (So they never checked the Linux installation). Yesterday I made some intensive hard disc scans with "SMART" but no errors were found. I ran memtest for 3 times but no errors found. I already had this problem in my old flat, so I doubt that I has something to do with current fluctuation. I already tried another electrical socket and changed to connector strip but the problem persists. At the moment I removed 2 of the RAMs (2x 2GB). In all I have 6GB, 2x2GB and 2x1GB. • Delphi app manifest file problems under WinXP and Win7

  My last question "List service and services status under Win-7" made me start working on a solution that gives my app the admin privileges under Windows Vista onward based on a .manifest file. I was not sure about continue the previous question with this matter since they are not the same so here is another question: My app now works fine under Win 7 whether or not I run it "as admin" because of the manifest file. The other and bigest problem is, even thou the app runs with no problem under Win7 or Vista, under WinXP it is now crashing with the message: "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem." Another thing I would like to add: If I add reference (uses clause) to XPMan the app works fine on WinXP but then it my .manifest file makes no diference under Vista or Win7.

Now BC is at version 3, and I think it's a great tool... but what are your experience in this field? Do you think there is something better?   I'd like to accept JSON on an REST endpoint and convert it to the correct type for immediate validation. The endpoint looks like this: @POST public Response createCar(@Valid Car car) { // persist to DB // ... } But there are many subclasses of Car, e.g. Van, SelfDrivingCar, RaceCar, etc. How could I accept the different JSON representations on the endpoint, while keeping the validation code in the Resource as concise as something like @Valid Car car? Again: I send in JSON like (here, it's the representation of a subclass of Car, namely SelfDrivingCar): { "id" : "t1", // every Car has an Id "kind" : "selfdriving", // every Car has a type-hint "max_speed" : "200 mph", // some attribute "ai_provider" : "fastcarsai ltd." // this is SelfDrivingCar-specific } and I'd like the validation machinery look into the kind attribute, create an instance of the appropriate subclass, here e.g. SelfDrivingCar and perform validation. I know I could create different endpoints for all kind of cars, but thats does not seem DRY. And I know that I could use a real Validator instead of the annotation and do it by hand, so I'm just asking if there's some elegant shortcut for this problem.
