• Is it possible to install ZSNES Emulator from default software sources?

  I can find it listed when I search for "zsnes" in the Ubuntu Software Center but it doesn't have the "Install" button. If I click the "More information" button I'll get a "package not found" message. Synaptic can't find this package either. (from user @REJ) I have Natty 64bit. When I run sudo apt-get install zsnes it gives the following output: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package zsnes is not available, but is referred to by another package.   Hi Everyone,Recently there has been some confusion regarding the need for partner-related candidates to meet the hands-on course requirement for tracks that require it. I thought it would be wise to clarify this point on the blog. A recurring question that we have been getting is:Question: Do partner candidates need to meet a hands-on course requirement?Answer: Yes. In order for a person to become certified they must meet the certification requirements for the track that they are pursuing (as listed on the Oracle certification web site). Regardless of candidate type - partner, customer, employee, etc. - all of the certification requirements for a track must be met. • Change from tri-boot to dual-boot

  I have been tri-booting Windows 7, Windows 8 Release Candidate and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS for a few months now. I have decided that, since I have no touch screen, I will not purchase Win 8. I now want to get rid of the Win 8 RC, then add that partition space to my Ubuntu partition, but have no idea how to accomplish this. Do I need to uninstall Win 8 RC from within Windows first? The grub loader sends me to the Win 8 loader, where I have Win 7 as the default. Does that complicate things? Any assistance anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

• How do you make comp.sci students and future programmers aware of the various software licenses and the nuances of it ?

  To be specific How would you include it as part of curriculum ? Would it be too boring to just introduce them as a pure law subject ? Are there any course structure available or can we derive one ? What are the books that could be used ? I would like to see that - after going through the course - candidate is well aware of "what software licenses are and what they are good for". Various implications of not knowing it in it's proper sense. What licenses they should use for their own code. What to consider when they are trying to use certain libraries or tools in their project and gauge risks/rewards associated with it. The idea is to let them make informed choices when they are professionals/practitioners in field of programming and not make them substitute for a lawyer or even a paralegal who is going to fight the case or draft things.

• Humor in Documentation

  Is a small amount of lighthearted wording or humor acceptable in source code documentation? For example, I have an algorithm that has a message hop around a graph (network) until its path forms a cycle. When this happens it is removed from the queue of the node it last resided on which removes it from memory. I write that in a comment, and finish the comment with "Rest in peace, little guy". That serves very little documenting purpose, but it cheers me up a bit, and I imagine it might cheer up other people I'm working with as they read through the code. Is this an acceptable practice, or should my in-code documentation resemble as much as possible the speeches of 2004 United States presidential candidate John Kerry? ;-)

  So I was doing the following: sudo apt-get install php-pear php5-dev sudo apt-get install imagemagick libmagickwand-dev sudo pecl install imagick It all works till I get the error: make: *** [imagick_class.lo] Error 1 ERROR: `make' failed Which according to blog posts and forms is because of libmagick9-dev, how ever when trying to install this I get: sudo apt-get install libmagick9-dev Reading package lists... • Good Literature for "Object oriented programming in C"

  This is not a debate question about whether or not C is a good candidate for Object oriented programming or not. Quite often C is the primary platform where the development is happening. I have seen, and hopefully learnt through crawling many open source and commercial projects - that while the language inherently doesn't stop you if you create "non-object" code. However, you can still think in the "Object" way and reasonably write code that captures this designs thinking. For those who has done this, OO way is still the best way to write code even when you are programming in C. While, I have learnt most of it through the hard way, are there any deep literature that can help educate the relatively young guys about how to do OO programming in C?

  I'm having trouble coming up with an approach that isn't n^2 for this problem. Here's a contrived, simplified version I've come up with: Let's say you're a company that needs 4 employees to launch in a new city, a manager, two salespeople, and a customer support rep, and you magically know how much impact every candidate will have and how much salary they require to take the job. Your table of potential employees looks something like this: Name Position Salary Impact Adam Smith Manager 60,000 11 Allison Brown Salesperson 40,000 9 Brad Stewart Manager 55,000 9 ...etc (thousands of records) What algorithmic approach can be taken to find the maximum "impact" while still filling all the positions and remaining under, say, a 200,000 budget? • How do I install the latest Mesa release?

  Which is the preferred way to install the latest stable version of Mesa on Ubuntu? I believe that would be a PPA, but not the bleeding-edge one like xorg-edgers. I would like to see a PPA that contains the latest stable release. Right now 10.3 has reached Release Candidate stage and development branched to 10.4, so the latest stable version is 10.2. Soon 10.3 will become the latest stable version and I'd like a PPA that would follow that. For comparison, xorg-edgers contains 10.3.0~git20140821 and oibaf has 10.4~git1408211930.

• Preventing pop-up dialogs when connecting an MTP device

  I'm using Lubuntu 14.04 with a Samsung Galaxy S3 running Android 4.3. Each time I connect my phone via USB, I get the following dialog: Unable to open MTP device '[usb:002,023]' A few moments later, I get the "Removable medium is inserted" dialog, prompting me to open in File Manager. After that, the phone is connected and fully accessible. So MTP works. The problem is that I plug in my phone to charge every time I sit down, and unplug it every time I step away. Dismissing these two dialogs every time is a pain. I would think the "Removable medium" dialog is the easier candidate. How do I tell Ubuntu to take no action and stop prompting me? For the MTP error, all the discussion I can find is for people who can't get MTP working at all. For me, it's working, but only after throwing this initial error. I've verified that my device is present in /lib/udev/rules.d/69-libmtp.rules

• Need Help Unable to Mount Location

  I am not able to start Windows and am using a DVD copy of Ubuntu to start up. I see my 750 GB Hard Disk, but if I click it i get this error: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details. After googling for a while I think I need to do sudo apt-get install ntfsprogs but when I try that: E: Package 'ntfsprogs' has no installation candidate My problem is a lot like this thread

  I'm working as a developer in a small software company whose main job is interfacing between separate applications, like between a telephony system and an environment control system, between IP TVs and hospitality systems, etc...And it seems like I am the candidate for a new job title in the company, as the person who does the proof of concept of a new interfacing project and does some R&D for prototyping. What do you think the pros and cons of such a job would be, considering mainly the individual progress/regress of a person as a software engineer? And what aspects would you consider essential in a person to put him/her in such a job position?

• Constrained/penalized distance function

  Assume a character is located on a n by n grid and has to reach a certain entry on that grid. Its current position is (x1,y1). Also on the same grid is an enemy with coordinates (x2,y2). Each step algorithm randomly generates new candidate locations for the hero (if there are k candidates then there is a kx2 matrix of new potential locations. What I need is some distance objective function to compare the candidates. I'm currently using d1 - c * d2, where d1 is distance to the objective (measure in terms of number of pixels for each axis), d2 is distance to the enemy and c is some coefficient (this is very much like a set-up for Lagrangian). It's not working very well though. I'd be quite keen to learn how what constrained distance function are used for similar cases. Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

It gives the following errors and a blank screen in which I should get android home screen, icons, etc shows up.   This post will be a part of Visual Studio 2012 series. Before some days Microsoft has released the release candidate version of Visual Studio 2012. Today I got installed Visual Studio 2012 and once I loaded the visual studio 2012 first things I noticed that there is purple color blank strip is there at bottom. After doing some R and D on internet I have found that it is used for the different indication. The purple color indicates that there is no project loaded now. Once you open the project this line will be of blue color like below. Once you run and F5 and debug it, the color will change to orange like below . Isn’t that great?
