• 2-Bay External HDD Enclosure in JBOD mode fails to detect both drives (Linux & Windows)

  I recently purchased a couple of USB 3.0 External HDD Enclosures to use for storage and backup; the idea was to have one act as backup to the other, with 4 x 3TB drives in total. However, the second drive in each is not accessible in either Linux nor Windows, and I could not determine the reason. 1. Situation The two enclosures are slightly different (couldn't find them in stock at the same time) yet from many little details appear to be the same Chinese base design with a tweaked outer shell. The models are: Sharkoon 2-Bay RAID Box Fantec MR-35DU3 The drives are Seagate 3TB Barracuda ST33000651AS, firmware CC44, all identical. From reading manuals and online sources, I determined that JBOD would be the optimal setup for my needs -- addressing the two drives separately in each enclosure would be important, making it easy to swap drives and mix&match them if needed; all the other modes implied the controller doing a combination of the drives. The software used was Debian GNU/Linux - testing/wheezy - kernel 2.6.39-2 and Windows 7 Ultimate. 2. Description of the problem Now, here comes the problem: every time I connect either of the enclosures to a PC using the supplied cable (tried a different one as well), only the HDD in the top bay is readable, the one below is detected yet errors out in various ways. According to the manuals, it should not happen: in JBOD, the system should be able to "see" two separate drives upon connection. This happens with both enclosures and any combination of HDDs (i.e. if I swap them, the same thing happens), so the HDDs are good and I think so are the enclosures (two different companies making similar products that failed in an identical fashion would be very unlikely). The top HDD can be used fine every time, I actually tried a speed test from Linux and got about 150MiB/s reads, so all is working as it should; the one below refuses to work every time. So the failure is consistent. To make sure this was not some obscure Linux bug, I tried the same under Windows 7, and the system also only created one drive letter for a drive of 3TB size (so it was only seeing one instead of both). Placing an older, known good, 2TB drive in the top bay made that the one recognised, so we have the same issue under Windows as well. Log entries under Linux (tested here with a 3TB and a 2TB drive so I could differentiate them; either one works in the top enclosure, in the test setup the 3TB one is on top). • Create creative diagrams or find someone creative

  This question might be slightly non-techy/dev, but I am sure many of you had a similar problem. We code, write test-cases, put comments in source-code (!), put messages in svn commit, write comments in tracked issues. We create ERD/class/usecase/.. diagrams with whatever tool. We might write user-manuals, wikis, guidelines,.. Not everyones cup of tea, but usually practice makes a good tech writer (I experienced that). Now comes the point: Once in a while we need to supply system overview diagrams, drawings of architecure,.. that look appealing to non-technical people, and no, we dont have a marketing department with designers waiting for our input or a $$$$ design company doing our corporate design. If I try to do that, it a) takes forever b) I might not have the tools and c) looks like crap and not like something I want to see in a slideshow. Whats your experience or recipe ? Is there something like RENT-A-DESIGNER ? cheers

• Implementing a pager for asp.net's DataList/Repeater

  I have a DataList showing the results, and a Repeater that is supposed to be the pager. I decided to use the page number by redirecting with a QueryString parameter, so it will also be bookmarkable ... My problem is mainly in the UI actually. If I put DIV's with their onclick calling a JS function that does window.location = url + pagenumber , then somehow I have to deal with QueryString operations via JS which is a bit messy. If I use LinkButton objects within the ItemTemplate, then the Redirecting happens only when the linkbutton is clicked while whole div has cursor: pointer , you what I mean. What would be the best approach to this? Thanks in advance. Note: I really want to spend the time and effort implementing my own server-side paging. I think its more fun than reading 3rd party manuals.

• Disable CTRL+P in WPF DocumentViewer

  I'm working on a new presenation component for one of our applications. I am building a Custom WPF Control that just has a DocumentViewer in it and hosting that CC in a Windows Forms application with an ElementHost. I'm using Visual Studio 2008 with C#. I have customized everything through the XAML to give it the look and feel that integrates it perfecting into our application, but one thing remains... If you press CTRL+P the print dialog still comes up. I'm at a complete loss as to how to disable that fuction. The use of this CC is to allow the users to pull up and view the Manuals for the systems installed at that site, but we don't want them to accidently print them (100s of pages). Please help, -G

• Mixing regular expression and other conditional expression in a bash if statement

  I can't get around this for quite sometime now. As I read along manuals and tutorials I'm getting more confused. I want an if statement with the following logic: if [ -n $drupal_version ] && [[ "$drupal_version" =~ DRUPAL-[6-9]-[1-9][1-9] ]]; then but I can't get it to work properly. When the script is evaluated using the "bash -x ... " script construct, works ok but when is run as a regular script my expression is not evaluated (eventhough the above condition should be met the else part is run). Could you provide any help?

• Why do software engineers hate writing documentation?

  I ask because I quite enjoy it! I'm talking about design documentation and implementation notes (NOT user manuals), which are non-existent in most of the codebases I've been handed. I can understand why a developer wouldn't want to write requirements (that's the analyst's job) or the user documentation (that's a technical writer's job) but I don't get why developers hate writing design docs. I don't think I would feel as if I'd finished the job if I only wrote the code and walked away -- mainly because when I've been introduced to code-only situations I've seen how hard it is to figure out what's been done and what the software does. I would hate for people to suffer the same situation when inheriting my code. What makes you loath writing supporting documentation for your code?

For example, a lot of ant manuals suggest the following list of targets: init clean compile build jar test javadoc dist deploy webapp What is the most large build file you met in your life? How many targets did it have and what are they? How often do you need more than predefined set of targets? The goal is to develop some conventions to have standard buildfile template for any project having the notion of the maven-like approach in mind (when a lot of work happens under the cover, convention over configuration). Also it would be great if you know the place where one can find collection of different buildfiles to choose or to get inspired from.

• What are the ways to create draw data structures for latex?

  I tried tikz/pgf a bit but have not had much luck creating a nice diagram to visualize bitfields or byte fields of packed data structures (i.e. in memory). Essentially I want a set of rectangles representing ranges of bits with labels inside, and offsets along the top. There should be multiple rows for each word of the data structure. This is similar to most of the diagrams in most processor manuals labeling opcode encoding etc. Has anyone else tried to do this using latex or is there a package for this?

• Condor job using DAG with some jobs needing to run the same host

  I have a computation task which is split in several individual program executions, with dependencies. I'm using Condor 7 as task scheduler (with the Vanilla Universe, due do constraints on the programs beyond my reach, so no checkpointing is involved), so DAG looks like a natural solution. However some of the programs need to run on the same host. I could not find a reference on how to do this in the Condor manuals. Example DAG file: JOB A A.condor JOB B B.condor JOB C C.condor JOB D D.condor PARENT A CHILD B C PARENT B C CHILD D I need to express that B and D need to be run on the same computer node, without breaking the parallel execution of B and C.   Hello, I have a stored procedure, which has got executed without any errors, but gives me an error "#1054: Unknown column 'templateName' in where clause" when I run it. And whenever I call it, I get the mentioned error. What could the problem be?? It surely is syntactical, I have been reading the mysql manuals for 2 days and have come out without!! • Simple PHP query question: LIKE

  When I replace $ordering = "apples, bananas, cranberries, grapes"; with $ordering = "apples, bananas, grapes"; I no longer want cranberries to be returned by my query, which I've written out like this: $query = "SELECT * from dbname where FruitName LIKE '$ordering'"; Of Course this doesn't work, because I used LIKE wrong. I've read through various manuals that describe how to use LIKE and it doesn't quite make sense to me. If I change the end of the db to "LIKE "apples"" that works for limiting it to just apples. Do I have to explode the ordering on the ", " or is there a way to do this in the query?

• Throw blank even-numbered/left pages

  I am trying to typeset a large document using ReportLab and Python 2.7. It has a number of sections (about 6 in a 1,000 page document) and I would like each to start on odd-numbered/right-hand page. I have no idea though whether the preceding page will be odd or even and so need the ability to optionally throw an additional blank page before a particular paragraph style (like you sometimes get in manuals where some pages are "intentionally left blank"). Can anyone suggest how this could be done, as the only conditional page break I can find works on the basis of the amount of text on the page not a page number. I also need to make sure that the blank page is included in the PDF so that double-sided printing works.

Price: $139 iPod Touch or iPad       You can’t go wrong with either of these presents—the iPod Touch can do almost everything the iPhone can do, including games, apps, and music, and it has the same Retina display as the iPhone, HD video recording, and a front-facing camera so you can use FaceTime. Price: $229+, depending on model. The iPad is a great tablet for playing games, browsing the web, or just using on your coffee table for guests. It’s well worth buying one—but if you’re buying for yourself, keep in mind that the iPad 2 is probably coming out in 3 months. Price: $500+ MacBook Air  The MacBook Air comes in 11” or 13” versions, and it’s an amazing little machine. It’s lightweight, the battery lasts nearly forever, and it resumes from sleep almost instantly. Since it uses an SSD drive instead of a hard drive, you’re barely going to notice any speed problems for general use. So if you’ve got a lot of money to blow, this is a killer gift. Price: $999 and up. Stuck with No Idea for a Present? Gift Cards! Yeah, you’re not going to win any “thoughtful present” awards with these, but you might just give somebody what they really want—the new Angry Birds HD for their iPad, Cut the Rope, or anything else they want. • ESXi hard drive power saving

  I currently have a Windows Server running beneath my desk and was considering replacing it with a ESXi layer to run both a Windows and Unix virtual machine. The ESXi is going to give me some nice advantages that I can use but I am still stuck on this issue: The server is mainly used as a fileserver/local webserver, and I use Windows tasks to hibernate/wake the machine at night. Also there is an aggressive disk spin down timeout to reduce noise. With ESXi, this will not be possible to do any more. I could live with the server running 24/7, but I would really like to spin down the disks when not in use. Is there a way to do this on ESXi?

• reverse proxy on PFsense, squid or otherwise

  I've been trying to get this to work for days now and its not working. After bashing my head against the desk enough times, I've decided to man up and ask. I'm desperately trying to set up a reverse proxy on the pfsense box itself. One because its a pretty powerful box and its not being utilized to the maximum at all and two because I don't have any spare machines to setup squid (or any other reverse proxy [capable]) server on. So, on pfsense, everytime I set up rules (on ServicesProxy ServerGeneral) as so: acl surveillance dstdomain surveillance.myweb.local; acl camera dstdomain camera.myweb.local; http_access allow surveillance AND camera (ad nauseum) when I check the services, squid stops and refuses to restart until I remove them pesky acls that are supposed to make my life easier! What am I doing wrong? How can I get it to work? Is there another way/package I can use? Thanks

• How would the optimal Emacs-keyboard look like?

  Emacs is a historic piece of software. It promises outstanding productivity for keyboard wizards that really want to explore it's power. The effective use of the keyboard is key to Emacs productivity, but the keyboard hardware has changed a lot since the old days, so many modern Emacs users are struggling with weird 'Emacs chords' on their Windows/IBM keyboards. If one would design a keyboard that is entirely focused on the needs of Emacs users - how would it look like? I assume the following: the standard keybindings of Emacs are accepted, redefinitions are rare exceptions we are only talking about QWERTY keyboards (including regional variations like QWERTZ) we are only considering users applying the (10 fingers) touch typing system. the question is not only about remapping the keys of existing keyboards (perfectly possible on Linux with .xmodmap and on Windows with keytweak, for example) - think about the perfect keyboard-hardware you would like to see on your desk while hacking in Emacs all day long. Please tag your answer with your locale, i.e. [en] or [de], so that everybody knows what regional layout you are using. I will answer my own question below, to show you the results of some investigation and experimentation, but I really would like to read about different approaches and their pro's and con's. • Would you re-design completely under .Net?

  A very extensive application began as an Access-based system (for database storage). Forms were written in VB5 and/or VB6. As .Net became a fixture in the development community, certain modules have been rewritten. This seems very awkward and potentially costly just to maintain because of the cross-technologies and extra work to keep the two technologies happy with each other. Of course, the application uses a mix of ODBC OleDb and MySql. Would you think spending the time and resources to completely re-develop the application under .Net would be more cost effective? In an effort to develop a more stable application, wouldn't it make sense to use .Net? Or continue chasing Access bugs, adding new features in .Net (which may or may not create new bugs between .Net and Access), and rewriting old Access modules into .Net modules under time constraints that prevent proper design and development? Update The application uses OleDb and MySql - I corrected my previous statement. Also, to lend further support to rewriting: I have since found out that when the "porting" to .Net began, the VBA/VB6 code that existed was basically translated to the .Net equivalent. From my understanding, nothing was done to improve performance, or take advantage of new libraries or technologies. In my opinion, this creates a very fragile and unstable application. With every new update, this becomes more and more visible. As a help desk technician, I have noticed an increase in problems reported. The customers using the software have noticed an increase in problems and are commenting on it.

• SQL SERVER – 4 Tips for ETL Software IDE Developers

  In a previous blog, I introduced the notion of Semantic Types. To an end-user, a seamlessly integrated semantic typing engine significantly increases the ease of use of an ETL IDE (integrated development environment, or developer studio). This led me to think about other ease-of-use issues I have encountered while building ETL applications. When I get stumped while programming, I find myself asking the variations on these questions: “How do I…?” “Now what?” “Why isn’t this working?” “Why do I have to redo the work I just did?” It seems to me that a good ETL IDE will anticipate these questions and seek to answer them before they are even asked. So here are my tips to help software vendors build developer IDEs that actually make development easier. How do I…? While developing an ETL application, have you ever asked yourself: “How do I set up the connection to my SQL Server database?”,“How do I import my table definitions from Access?”, etc. An easy answer might be “read the manual” but sometimes product manuals are not robust or easily accessible. So, integrating robust how-to instructions directly into your ETLstudio would help users get the information they need at the time they need it. Now what? IDEs in general know where you last clicked or performed an action using an input device such as a keyboard; so they should be able to reasonably predict the design context you are in and suggest the next steps accordingly. Context-sensitive suggestions based on the state of the user’s work will help users move forward in ETL application development. Why isn’t this working? Or why do I have to wait till I compile to be told about a critical design issue? If an ETL IDE is smart enough to signal to users what in their design structures is left to be completed or has been completed incorrectly, then the developer can spend much less time in the designàcompileàerror-correct loop. Just-in-time validation helps users detect and correct programming errors earlier in the ETL development life cycle. Why do I have to redo the work I just did? In ETL development, schemas, transformation rules, connectivity objects, etc., can be reused in various situations. Using mouse-clicks to build and manage libraries of reusable design objects implies that the application development effort should decrease over time and as the library acquires more objects. • Charging a laptop battery, without a laptop.

  I have an old-ish laptop that only works on AC power because the battery is old and no longer holds a charge. I live in Christchurch New Zealand where there has recently been a number of very large earthquakes. During one of these earthquakes my laptop was thrown from my desk to the floor and now does not respond at all when the AC adapter is connected. Given that the laptop is not responding to power, is there another way I could charge a replacement battery for it as I don't currently have funds to repair the AC adapter on the box. My research would suggest that this isn't possible as chargers need to take into account the specifics of the model of battery being charged
