    What layout of resume works best for experienced programmers? Currently my layout is: Contact Details Focus (goal) Technical Skills Professional Experience (Responsibilities + achievements at each job) Education Interests I feel my current layout uses up too much valuable space. Most of the online templates feel like junior Resumes with emphasis on education so I am not sure how I can improve it. I wonder how many hiring managers actually care about goal/objective? To me it looks useless. Also, is it necessary to have summary of technical skills/technologies? If so, would it not make more sense for it to be mentioned later in the Resume rather then at the top? Finally, do you have separate section for achievements? Many thanks.

  • Part-time work as a beginner programmer [on hold]

    I wrote to one company near my university (starting in September) and they responded that they will probably hire me from the work I have already done (some projects and Euler problems solving). It's for 15 hours/week or so in order to not fall behind uni work. They require Python, SQL, XML and a good idea about how the Web works. The job role involves acquiring data from the Web and supplying it as search results for flight seekers (people). I am eager to learn but still, what can I do to become prepared for this? I ask because I tend to gravitate from one technology to the other, trying out things but never mastering it properly. What Web technologies are involved in such a job role? I have two months and want to learn as much as possible because there is much info but I have no idea where to start.

I am starting to regret not taking any business classes in college because I don't understand the first thing about running a business so I don't always understand what people are wanting, the best I can do is "think through it".   • Best/ most efficient way to learn a programming language as a beginner [closed]

    I am a student and have obtained a one year placement at a business that develops an e-commerce system using C#, HTML, WPF, javascript, ASP and more. Although I do have a little bit of knowledge, I find myself being assigned a lot of tasks that are beyond me and even when I ask for help, the response I get is often cryptic to me. I stare at as much code as possible to just try and "throw myself into it" but I often just get lost in the code I like to consider myself a fast learner and I am damn determined to be a good programmer. I would just like to ask if there are some tips for me to catch up as quick as possible? I don't want to be a nuisance and sit here and ask for help 24/7. I just want to crack on!

    I want to be able to write programs (tools) for my own needs, and I want to tell the computer what to do, not to be strict to what other's told it to do. I have a good knowledge of Linux & Windows, I am also have a bit of Python in my head, but I think that I need some guidance on what languages or practices to invest my time into in order to be able to tell the computer what to do. I know there is a lot of posts similar to what I am asking here, but there is a big difference and so I have opened this thread. My goal isn't to work at a company, so I don't need to learn how to work as a team, I don't need to learn as much how to maintain my code nor how to write it nice for others to understand (I know it is important but not for me). I don't want to learn it as a profession, but as a serious hobby (you can call it hacking as long as you know what cracking means), my end goal is to be able to understand other's people code, and to write my own code with a lot of deep knowledge of the ins and outs of the computer system in order to gain from it as much as I can. So in essence my questions are: How can I understand, in depth, computers, in order to exploit them as much as I can? What should I learn? Are there any books that I should read? Is it possible to do this, or do I have to learn every aspect of programming?

I am thinking of trying to go to his place, at least try as I want to move in Business Intelligence field in SSRS and SSIS. I just want to know that is it possible for me to get my head around those things in 4 months because I have no idea how they work and how hard it will be for me to pick up those things. Can I do that? I just want to know from experienced people if I can move towards that field? At least how should I start? In my area there are shortages of person, so once I know the stuff I can get into junior jobs easily but I want to know from experienced people.

    There is a coworker who has stolen credit for my work. I created a system that will show live statuses of printing machines throughout the plant. There was one glitch in it so the coworker made an improvement and then re-wrote the entire system (copying 90% of my code, yet he added a new piece of hardware then took over the project). Now he asks me programming questions from time to time. I don't mind teaching coworkers how to program, but since he has stolen my ideas and credit in the past I am reluctant to teach him all I know. Today he asks me for a particularly challenging algorithm for this system. His code now looks exactly like the way I would program! How would you handle the situation? How can I decline helping him without appearing to not being a team player?

    I am a student right now. Recently, I am working in a project as a leader with three other students. Due to the lack of experience, our project is progressing slowly and our members are frustrated. They do not feel sense of accomplishment in the project. I am pressured and frustrated, too. But as a team leader, I think I need to push them. But I do not know how to do. Do I help them solve coding problem or just encouragement? But if I pay too much attention on it, it would slow down my own progress. It is a not technical question, but it is very common in software development.     Hi All! this is my very first time here! so nice to meet you guys! ;-) When i was starting with this job, ( when i have chosed of doing this for the rest of my life) i have thinked also, one day, before or after, i would become blind or at least sick by drinking 5 or more coffee per day and of course by sitting down on my pc for hours!!! ;-\ From many years now, i'm asking myself how my eyes can stay in front o the monitor for so many hours per day!? well now i'm to a point of no return!!! i feel my eyes each day more tired, and my productivity is waning, but i can't change work now and i don't want do this!!!! what i need to do for prevent this to become a more serious problem for me and for my eyes!? any suggestion will be really appreciated!!!     Hey all. As part of ongoing research that I am conducting, I would like to ask a crowd, that I feel is the most qualified, to answer a question. What does the community feel are characteristics of a mature programmer? I'm not asking the question because I'm looking to hire or anything of that nature. A colleague and I repeatedly hear a trend throughout universities and specifically computer science departments. The students generally ask questions of the form: How can I become a mature programmer? How can I become a world class programmer? What steps should a new programmer take to become more skilled? So, with that, we are conducting research to attempt to identify an optimized path that would allow an introductory programmer to advance to that of a skilled/mature programmer. Now, I understand that there are many "it depends" out there depending on what vertical industry one works in, but I feel we can determine many common characteristics irrespective of the industry. Any thing you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Lately I have been learning of more and more programmers who think that if they were working alone, they would be faster and would deliver more quality. Usually that feeling is attached to a feeling that they do the best programming in their team and at the end of the day the idea is quite plausible. If they ARE doing the best programming, and worked alone (and more maybe) the final result would be a better piece of software. I know this idea would only work if you were passionate enough to work 24/7, on a deadline, with great discipline. So after considering the idea and trying to learn a little more, I wonder if there are famous one-man-army programmers that have delivered any (useful) software in the past?

  • I am not satisfied with my career and accomplished nothing in my life. what should I do now [on hold]

    After my complete my College education I got chance to work on software programming. I work on few software and now nothing make me feel good. I don't like web-programming. Can't have too much mind to play with other people in team a designer or a senior. it's totally time wasting for me. We do integration without any source code control. copy through pen drive. I write in too many language for web-programming but know nothing about any language specially. I don't like to have a BOSS. I would like to do something on my own. From last 3 year I thing I will got a better job but I am unable to get it. I am not good at Programming nor my English is native. I have a big list for pay then my salary. I have problem with nothing. my atmosphere is about illiterate people. they abuse 24 hours a day. this thing make me sick. people watch CRIME patrol my home (watching rape in TV because it's happen to someone). I do my work from home. I don't like to live in my state. All state is one of the biggest illiterate state of my country. Once I apply for a Job in China and it's look like I can get thing Job but I don't get it. My family doesn't want me to settle anywhere else. I told my family 4 time a day that I can't live in this worst situation. Everyone (including the person who I work for) tell me that you can do it only you have money. Now I really don't know how to make money. My job not allow me to work for anyone. My productivity going down since I don't learn anything new. I thing if this happen to me for next 2 year I don't have any knowledge more then a peon. I hate it. When I was in other city then I see that if I spent 7 days their all my 7 days going better. even I go for travelling in green places then I like it. but all I hate it where I work for. When I work on other city then I see my productivity are improved and I don't hate my work. I listen a song "If you don't your love what are you doing it for". I seriously don' t know what I still live here because this place gave me nothing but depression and trouble. for people I clear that I don't belong to RICH or middle class family. All I got is doing something on my own or help of someone. affording a rental place make my run on footpath. All I save in one month is just 10$ (approximately) (actually I afford some guys's education now). Can a programmer live worst life like this. I really not happy. Today is a festival in India and I don't celebrate it because I really hate myself. I want to do suicide. someone guide me how to start solving this headache

No side cabinets. Attractive. Electric adjustable would be nice, but I haven't found very attractive looking one.   • OpenVPN, Great on Windows, VERY slow on Mac...

    Hello, I'm not really an IT Pro, but this seemed like the best place to ask this question... I have setup VPN networks in the past, for fun, and everything was great, but now I've set one up for my boss, and while my computers all work great, his Mac machines are almost too slow to work with. Its pretty much vanilla configs all around, anyone have any ideas? Its a TUN routing setup over UDP. Back Story: My boss travels a lot, and wants to be able to access all his files from the road, and is also pretty paranoid about security (even though knows almost nothing about computers). SO i figured a VPN would be the answer. I went with OpenVPN, but there are some other issues. The only ISP we can get in our area besides Dial-UP is a crappy Satellite provider, that doesn't offer public IPs unless your willing to pay, so while the computers and VPN setup are pretty vanilla, the routing and structure is strange to get around this limitation. Specs: Its OpenVPN2, and there are six machines using it (only three actually use it, the rest are my test machines), one Windows 7 laptop, two XP Desktops, one OS X 10.5 Desktop, one 10.6 Desktop, and one 10.6 Laptop. One XP Desktop sits at my house and acts as the server (6Mbs/2Mbs FIOS connection). One XP desktop sits at the office and hosts a webpage that will wake up the Main Mac Desktop from sleep, and also ping all the machines on the VPN and show their status. The main office mac (10.6) stays in sleep mode until it gets the Wake-On-Lan packet from the Office XP, and then it auto connects to the VPN and opens itself up. The reason for all this is the Satellite private IP crap means i cant directly access the office machines outside of the LAN, so everyone connects to my house first, then they talk to each other from there. The Wake On Lan weirdness is because my boss doesn't want to leave the main Mac on all the time, and making a quick and dirty webpage was the easiest way to send a Magic Packet from inside the LAN without confusing my boss. The VPN uses Client Config files to make static IPs for the client. The only thing i found in google was some changes to the VPN MTU settings (down to 1400) but no real help. Oh, and i forgot...all the windows machines just have OpenVPN start as a service. The Mac laptop uses tunnelblick (an OpenVPN GUI) and the Mac Desktops use OpenVPN in normal command line mode.     There are a lot of great programming quotes out there. Which do you like? Today (Sept 12, 2008) I heard a new one from a friend, Lars-Gunnar, he said "Gud finns i Emacs" (in Swedish). This basically means "God is in Emacs". Still laughing about it here :) What he meant was that a function "gud is grand-unified-debugger" is in Emacs.
