  • Polymorphism in SQL database tables?

    I currently have multiple tables in my database which consist of the same 'basic fields' like: name character varying(100), description text, url character varying(255) But I have multiple specializations of that basic table, which is for example that tv_series has the fields season, episode, airing, while the movies table has release_date, budget etc. Now at first this is not a problem, but I want to create a second table, called linkgroups with a Foreign Key to these specialized tables. That means I would somehow have to normalize it within itself. One way of solving this I have heard of is to normalize it with a key-value-pair-table, but I do not like that idea since it is kind of a 'database-within-a-database' scheme, I do not have a way to require certain keys/fields nor require a special type, and it would be a huge pain to fetch and order the data later. So I am looking for a way now to 'share' a Primary Key between multiple tables or even better: a way to normalize it by having a general table and multiple specialized tables.

  • Group SQL tables in SQL Server Management Studio object explorer

    I have a table which has approximately sixty tables, and other tables are added constantly. Each table is a part of a schema. A such quantity of tables makes it difficult to use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008. For example, I must scroll up in object explorer to access database related functions, or scroll down each time I need to access Views or Security features. Is it possible to group several tables to be able to expand or collapse them in Object Explorer? Maybe a folder may be displayed for each schema, letting collapse the folders I don't need to use?

  • jQuery - Could use a little help with a content loader

    Hi, I'm not very elite when it comes to JavaScript, especially the syntax. So I'm trying to learn. And in this process I'm trying to implement a content loader that basically removes all content from a div and inserts content from another div from a different document. I've tried to do this on this site: www.matkalenderen.no - Check the butt ugly link there. See what happens? I've taken the example from this site: http://nettuts.s3.cdn.plus.org/011_jQuerySite/sample/index.html#index But I'm not sure this example actually works the way I think it does. I mean, if the code just wipes out existing content from a div and inserts content from another div, why does the other webpages in this example include doctype and heading etc etc? Wouldn't you just need the div and it's content? Without all the other stuff "around"? Maybe I don't get how this works though. Thought it worked mosly like include really.     Hi there, Is there a way to retrieve tables, including alias tables, and columns, including alias columns, from an Apache Torque Criteria object reliably? I understand that there is methods like: getSelectedColumns, getAsColumns(), getJoins(), etc., but for examples, getJoins() will just return a list of joined tables strings in free text, where one has to use regular expression to extract the needed joined table information out of it.   • MySQL configuration that allows for locking many tables?

    I need to do a MySQLDump on a DB with ~700 tables and when I try with my current configuration, I get an error: mysqldump: Got error: 1016: Can't open file: './my_db/content_node_field_instance.frm' (errno: 24) when using LOCK TABLES Searching around I've found that this happens because it tries to lock all tables and fails because they are "too many". I know I can try lock-tables=no and get a dump, but this way my DB might be in an inconsistent state. So, does anyone know what is the MySQL configuration setting I need to change in order to be able to do the locking I need? I'm running 5.1.37-1ubuntu5.1 with MyISAM. Thanks!

  • Tables with no Primary Key

    I have several tables whose only unique data is a uniqueidentifier (a Guid) column. Because guids are non-sequential (and they're client-side generated so I can't use newsequentialid()), I have made a non-primary, non-clustered index on this ID field rather than giving the tables a clustered primary key. I'm wondering what the performance implications are for this approach. I've seen some people suggest that tables should have an auto-incrementing ("identity") int as a clustered primary key even if it doesn't have any meaning, as it means that the database engine itself can use that value to quickly look up a row instead of having to use a bookmark. My database is merge-replicated across a bunch of servers, so I've shied away from identity int columns as they're a bit hairy to get right in replication. What are your thoughts? Should tables have primary keys? Or is it ok to not have any clustered indexes if there are no sensible columns to index that way?

  • Membership Provider users in different tables

    I have an existing database with users and administrators in different tables. I am rewriting an existing website in ASP.net and need to decide - should I merge the two tables into one users table and just have one provider, OR leave the tables separated and have two different providers. Administrators, they need the ability to create, edit and delete users. I am thinking that the membership/profile provider way of editing users (i.e. System.Web.Profile.ProfileBase pro = System.Web.Profile.ProfileBase.Create("User1"); pro.Initialize("User1", true); txtEmail.Text = pro["SecondaryEmail"].ToString(); is the best way to edit users because the provider handles it? You cannot use this if you have two separate providers? (because they are both looking at different tables). Or should I make a whole lot of methods to edit the users for the administrators? UPDATE: Making a custom membership provider look at both tables is fine, but then what about the profile provider? The profile provider GetPropertyValues and SetPropertyValues would be going on the same set of properties for users and admins. Mike

    What do I do, I need to fetch data from 3 tables in mysql, here is my current query. All of the tables contain the IDNO which has 03A45 number. But this query isnt returning any results: SELECT * FROM father, mother, parents WHERE father.IDNO=mother.IDNO=parents.IDNO AND mother.IDNO='03A45' AND father.IDNO='03A45' AND parents.IDNO='03A45' What would be the correct query for this? All of the tables have the IDNO as primary key.

In such a setup importing becomes a problem since the order in which tables are imported is important (you have to import referenced tables before referencing ones).   • Java the little console game won't repeat?

    Okay, what I have so far is: You enter the game, and write "spin" to the console. Program will enter the while loop. In the while loop, if entered int is -1, return to the back (Set console input back to "", and let the user select what game he would like to play). Problem: Instead of going back, and selecting "spin" again, the program exits? Why is it happening?   • MySQL Create tables without commiting current transaction

    I'd like my program to be able to install plugins, and rollback all the changes made if an error occurs. So I create a transaction that keeps all the things that were added while installing the plugin. The problem is that the plugin may want to create tables, and doing so automatically commits the current transaction in MySQL. See Statements That Cause an Implicit Commit on MySQL web site. Any idea on how I could do it? I thought of using temporary tables as they are not automatically commited, unless they are using too much memory, but it looks like temporary tables cannot be rolled back anyway (and I haven't found a way to convert them to permanent tables). I just found out about "save points" (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/savepoint.html), but I don't really understand how/when it should be used nor if it can help me achieve what I want.

    Hello, I have a list of radio buttons that are inside a DIV called "radio-btns-wrapper-wjs", this DIV slides down/up when you click on a 'trigger' element, in my case a < span with the class "selected-search-wjs". The DIV "radio-btns-wrapper-wjs" slides back up when the user selects one of the radio buttons. This DIV also slides back up when the user does not take any action (does not select a radio button) but has already moved his mouse over "radio-btns-wrapper-wjs" DIV and then moves it out. So far, so good. What I need is to have the same DIV, "radio-btns-wrapper-wjs", slide back up when the user moves his mouse out from the < span "selected-search-wjs" element but NOT if the user moves his mouse over the DIV "radio-btns-wrapper-wjs". The thing is that is that if do this: $('.selected-search-wjs').mouseleave(function() { $('.radio-btns-wrapper-wjs').slideUp(); }); The DIV with the radio buttons, "radio-btns-wrapper-wjs", slides back up as soon as I leave that DIV to select a radio button. I need a condition that says something like: "Hide the DIV "radio-btns-wrapper-wjs" if the user hovers over you and then hovers out. Also, hide this same DIV if the user moves his mouse away from the < span "selected-search-wjs", but NOT if he moves his mouse over the DIV "radio-btns-wrapper-wjs"." Does all this make sense?   • Replicating/Synchronizng multiple tables across diffrent Databases on the same instance

    I have few tables that needed to be replicated/synchronized across several databases in our SQL Server 2008 cluster. I know it's possible to replicate between multiple instances, but I'm looking for replication or synchronization in the same instance between specific tables of databases. The replicaiton/synchronization should happen every half-hour or so, but I don't mind it happening constantly. I can't use DROP the target table and INSERT (copy) the source table since there are many constraints. Reason for this is to not manage in the application layer and write to 2 different databases at the same time. Example: DB1 has T1, T2 and T3 - these are constantly being updated by the application, APP1 running on DB1. DB2 needs to have an updated copy of T1 at all times, also, there is a different application, APP2 runs only on DB2. Both DB1 and DB2 are located on the same instance, INST1. Would it be possible to replicate T1, T2 and T3 from DB1 to DB2 ? Thanks, Idan.

  • Excel 2007 Pivot Tables: Overlapping issue hampers my summary sheet

    I've created a Workbook that has 5 Pivot Tables (PT). I want to make a summary sheet that holds all these PT's, but when they expand the 'not allowed to overlap issue' causes me updating problems - they don't update/expand effectively. Therefore, can't be printed off easily. The sheet would basically help my users give their bosses a simple quick overview of the larger worksheet - this way they would be more inclined to fill it in (give a little too get a little philosophy). I had thought about using the Camera Tool, but I'm not sure how you could make it dynamic, or whether it can be dynamic with a PT? Any advice, links or step-by-steps are greatly appreciated.
