• Is it possible to print on a networked Windows Print server from an AIX server, without using remote

  I have an application on an AIX server (v5.3) that needs to print via a Windows Print Server over the LAN. The simplest way to do this is to use SMIT to setup a remote print queue - which I've done on the test environment - but the IT department have refused to set up a remote print queue on the Production server. I don't have root access to the Production server. Is there any other method for connecting the app to the print server that doesn't involve print queues on the AIX box?

• X server with nvidia driver crashing: 12.04

  My X server consistently crashes. It seems like this is happening when the X server is idle. This behaviour is new with 12.04. This is only happening on the second display of a multiseat system. Is there a configuration change I can make to stop this?   I am setting up a print server for our company that has a parent domain and 2 child domains. The print server is on the parent domain and I have no problems getting the print server to deploy printers through group policy to users on its own domain. The problem I am having is that it isn't deploying the printers to users that are in it's child domains. Some other info that may help: I am not sharing or listing printers in the directory I have added pushprinterconnections.exe to the group policy login script Does anything come to mind?

• Ubuntu Sluggish and Graphics Problem after Nvidia Driver Update

  I just recently started using Ubuntu (12.04) since a few weeks ago and noticed that the interface is very slow and sluggish: On Dash, I have to type the entire app name and wait a few seconds before it shows up in the search box, and a bit later before it displays search result Opening new files or applications takes also quite long and awkward Dragging icons or moving app windows around is not very spontaneous too: I have to take extra attention in moving the mouse otherwise Ubuntu would not do a correct movement or might ends up doing something incorrect instead e.g. opening the windows to full screen options or move the file to different folders, which is frustrating My PC is a few years old already (1.7 GB RAM) so this could be a reason too but when I checked in System Monitor it's hardly ever consuming much memory. Plus web-surfing on Firefox is actually lightning fast (much more than Windows), so I suspect there might be something wrong with the graphics driver (mine is GeForce 7050). I checked around System Settings and found an option to update the Nvidia driver. So I tried it and restarted, as instructed. Now, I got into a big problem upon restart... as the login-screen windows (where I have to type in the password) would take several attempts to display and finally did not manage to (it'd freeze for several seconds before there's any movement again). The background screen also kept reloading several times too and at some point the screen turned black with pixelated color strips running on the bottom 1/3 of the screen, and after a long while the background screen would come up again. Eventually I'd manage to be able to access the desktop but the launcher, top menu bar and app windows border would not disappear. I searched around and found many other people have this similar problem after updating Nvidia driver too, and on some threads the suggestion is to use "killall -u $USER" in command line (it's the only thing among various online suggestions I could do, as at that point I could not access Terminal without the launcher - Ctrl-Alt-T doesn't work for me). So I did that and was able to access the desktop correctly again with launchee/menu by creating a new account. But I would still have the same problem if logging into my original account. So I just finally tried upgrading to 12.10 and now can access my original account with fully-functional desktop - the launcher, menu and windows border are all back now. However, the problem with sluggishness still remains. And now I get scared of ever having to update the Nvidia driver again! I wonder if anyone knows what's the reason that updating the Nvidia driver is causing this problem and is there a way I can update it safely in the future? I'm still not sure how to solve the problem with the sluggishness too and not sure where else to look to find a solution.

• Ubuntu 12.04 - default Radeon driver does not work at all

  I've recently upgraded to 12.04 LTS and I have an ATI Radeon HD5670. I've heard that the open source 'Radeon' driver is used by default. However, it wasn't showing anything for me. What I did was I added the 'nomodeset' option to boot up and install fglrx. But it didn't work well for me as it introduced a lot of problems (freezes/glitches). So I removed/purged fglrx and am planning to use the open source drivers instead. So my question is this: Why is my default Radeon driver not working? Is anyone having a similar issue? I've also tried using the ubuntu-x-swat driver by running the ff commands: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update But the result was the same as the Radeon driver. Nothing shows up on system boot. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!   I am trying to pint to a Brother MFC-7420 from my ubuntu 10.04 machine. The brother is attached to a windows XP machine and is shared. This is what I have tried: System-Administration-Printing, Add, Expand Network Printer, Windows Printer via SAMBA, Browse (I can find the printer no problems here), Foward, Choose Driver Dialog, Brother, My printer is not in this list So the next thing I tried was to download the printer driver from here http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_prn.html The driver installed fine but my printer still does not appear in the list. I also tried installing the cups wrapper but that gave the following error. It really shouldn't be this hard. on window you don't have to installing anything it just works and the same is true for my brothers Mac. How do I print to my printer?

I did not have any problem under Ubuntu 12.04, but since I updated to 12.10, I get some annoying graphic corruption. The worst one is that sometimes the screen does not update with the new information. It happens a lot when I change between tabs in Chrome or Sublime Text. It usually gets updated when I scroll the page. Sometimes, when I type, I have to wait a little bit to view the new characters. And I get trails when I move windows too (like a part of the window). After a while, the trail disappears. I tried to install fglrx, fglrx-updates and the new beta driver downloaded from Ati (12.11 Beta 11/16/2012), with no luck. It happens the same with all of them. I tried to mess with Compiz config, but it didn't fix anything. The open source driver does not suffer this problem, but I need the performance of the propietary driver . Do you have any clue?   I just installed Ubuntu and love it so much, its so fast now. But I have a problem connecting to the internet. I checked and saw I have to install the driver Broadcom STA wireless driver but every time I do try to install it it says: Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log files for details: /var/log/jockey.log I went to the terminal and copy and pasted the log file name. and when I did it, it said I have no permission to access this file. I checked on the forums that I have to be on a wired connection. So I plugged my laptop into my router and I got internet then tried to install the driver again. And it was loading then when it got to the end the same message popped up. Also I have one of those little USB router things you plug into the computer and it gives you internet I have been using that but its to slow. So I want to use the one in my computer but cant. Also I tried the command: sudo modprobe wl and when i type that command in it says: FATAL: Module wl not found Also I'm using Ubuntu 12.04

• Graphic Card Installation Failure (NV 9600M GT)

  I wanted to switch from 7 to Ubuntu. Now, the first thing that holds me back is the installation of the driver for my Nvidia 9600M GT. Ubuntu recommends me 4 drivers from the "Additional Driver" Section. Now, whatever driver I install, there are four things happening RANDOMLY after rebooting: The pc freezes before seeing bootup splash The pc freezes while seeing bootup splash image (ubuntu logo with the 5 dots) The pc gets into login screen and freezes instantly (Thought the unity-bar is transparent now) The pc freezes right after beeing able to login. (While this is happening the unity-bar changes from transparent to ugly-flat-style) I also tried to install the official Nvidia .run file but after exiting the X-Server, it says the driver is not compatible with the kernel and exits installation. Can somebody help me? I really wanna get rid of Windows :( But Ubuntu drives me perfectly insane. Please answer as noobish as possible. I'm an expert Windows user, but Linux is absolutely new to me. My Specs: Ubuntu 11.10 installed from USB Stick (like 100 times now :/ because I dont know how to remove the driver in recovery mode) 9600M GT 4GB Ram Intel Centrino 2 Dual Core 2.26GHz Win 7 and Ubuntu running along side. • How to determine the version and origin of proprietary drivers installed by Additional Drivers?

  How can I tell which version and from which repository the Additional Drivers tool is trying to install the fglrx graphics driver? It says that I have a different version of the driver in use. I installed the driver from maverick/restricted and apt-cache tells me it's from a regular Ubuntu mirror. The installed version is the same as the candidate version. Can I get Additional Drivers to tell me what it would install if I activated the driver through it? Is it possible Additional Drivers just assumes it's a different version since it was installed by a different process?

I have installed ATI driver 11.8 when I trying this game. And then I'm trying to install the driver from menu "System Administration Additional Driver, it doesn't work. I cannot log in, in the screen appear only the text for log in. And then I uninstall it trough recovery mode. And then I download ATI driver 11.11 from official ATI/AMD website, and then I restart my computer and my screen appearing only text again. I'm using Ubuntu (Ultimate Edition) 11.04. How to overcome this problem?

• SSRS 2008 printing single page renders different for print

  I have a problem with SSRS 2008 reports rendering differently on the reporting server than the way it renders when you print the report. I’m trying to figure out to print a single page and have the print show that same records as I see on the report on the screen. As a test, I created a simple report with no headers or footers and just added a Tablix table to display the records (no groupings). My data set for this test displays 2 ¼ pages of records when I deploy it to our reporting services server and run it. If I click the print Icon and preview the report is 2 ¾ pages. I haven’t found anything searching on this so it makes me think it is something simple I’m missing. A basically want the report to render the same records on each page in Report Manager as it does when it prints, how do I accomplish this? (In response to answer posted by Chris)…If that is the case then it is disappointing. Customers are accustomed to WYSIWYG and will have a hard time understanding that, I imagine we will be getting a lot of support calls. This still leaves an issue. I tried using print preview and could not find any way to single out a page. If I select a page up front to print, or preview it renders different so I get different records. And if I preview the entire document, I can only print the entire document. You mentioned the Excel render; we have customers that will want that also. The problem I have found with Excel exports is that even a basic report winds up merging some cells and that messes up sorting. I’m going to try your tip about grouping to see if I can get a clean export to a page. It would have been nice if they would have created a property for certain controls like the tablix table called “ExcelSheet”. Then all you would have to do is give it a name and it would create a new sheet for each control with a name, the name becoming the sheet title. Thanks for the information you supplied it is very useful as I’m new to SSRS. If you know how I can Preview in print render and select individual pages to print from the render let me know. Update 02/19/2010 After testing this more I now realize it is just a bad design of Report managers print driver or a limitation because it is server based. The options work differently than Windows apps drivers, But I did find a work around. Here is the test I performed comparing Excel to Report Manager. I bring up a report that will render more than 1 page when printed. I then export to Excel, in Excel I select print preview. I can navigate the pages in preview and then select a single page like page 3. I can then print just page 3 without leaving print preview and it prints just like it rendered. I cannot do this using print in report manager. If I select print preview in report manager then try to print while in preview it always prints the entire document. However if I close out of print preview, I can then select page 3 and print it as rendered. It is just one additional step once you know what to do, but it took some time to figure it out.

  My desktop machine is built on Gigabyte GA-Z87-UD3H and Gigabyte provides the latest driver for Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST), which I installed after installing the OS. Same goes for my Lenovo Thinkpad-T420. And for both machine, checking the controller device under the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers section in Device Manager I see the driver has been updated to the latest version. I set the SATA controller to AHCI from BIOS On the desktop machine I have one WD 2TB BLACK & one WD 3TB Green I don’t use RAID, & no chance of using in near future, but according to Intel IRST improves performance in single disk scenario too. Now I have the following questions – What is the actual purpose of IRST (pre-OS install) driver that doesn’t get served with a post-OS driver that I installed? There must be some difference, otherwise there wouldn’t be a pre-OS version of the driver. Right? In the pre-OS procedure (loading the drivers at OS-installation time) after successfully completing the OS installation, do I need that post-OS driver? Because after installing from that one I got a quick launch icon that runs the IRST configuration application. Where do get that after installing the pre-OS driver? As it is “pre-OS”, when I load it at OS-installation time, does it updates anything at BIOS level or anywhere other than HDD? That’s because I’m going to dual boot Windows 7 with Windows 8.1, and after installing Windows 7 when I install Windows 8.1 & load the IRST driver for that, is there any chance of any “overwriting” or OS-incompatibility? In short, is there anything specific to follow while installing the second OS?

  I am running Debian Squeeze on an old Dell Dimension 8300 box. It has an AGP Radeon HD 4650 card. I use this machine to mine bitcoins, and today I noticed that the machine had rebooted! My precious uptime! Anyway, my miner wouldn't start, so I figured might as well update my graphics driver, maybe that would fix the issue. I went to amd.com and downloaded the newest driver (12.6 legacy), but after installing it, aticonfig gave an error: aticonfig: No supported adapters detected I uninstalled the driver and figured I'd try to install it from apt. AMD has dropped support for the HD 4000 series in fglrx, forcing me to use fglrx-legacy-driver (currently only in experimental). In order to install this, I had to update libc6 (and some other important packages, like gcc), I had to use their wheezy versions. I finally got fglrx-legacy-driver installed, but I still got: aticonfig: No supported adapters detected Why isn't the driver finding my video card? I have a hunch it has something to do with the fact that it's an AGP video card. Thing is, since I am on kernel 3.2, I need to apply this patch to common/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/firegl_public.c. I thought ATI dropped support for the 4xxx series after 12.4. Why doesn't 12.6 legacy work?

• Compiling and installing UFRII driver for Canon IR2520 on a headless Ubuntu 12.04 Server

  I want to setup a headless Ubuntu 12.04 machine as a print server. The printer is Canon IR2520 which needs UFRII driver. Printer is connected to the network via Ethernet. After searching a lot about weather printer can be directly accessed as a SMB share, I decided to make Ubuntu server as print server. The Windows clients send the print jobs to the server and the server will send those jobs via Ethernet to the printer. I followed this how-to for installing the driver. The driver compilation fails with the error that gtk 2.0 package is not available. I cannot have gtk on a headless server, it is very necessary that it should not have any graphical/desktop packages. What would be the solution for installing UFRII on Ubuntu 12.04 Server.
