  I get asked often which business process standard an organization should use; BPMN or BPEL?  As I explain to folks, they both have strengths.  Here is a great article that helps understand the benefits of both and where to use them.  The good news is that, with Oracle SOA Suite and BPM suite, you have the option and flexibility to use both in the same SCA model and runtime container.  Good stuff. Here is the great article that Mark Nelson wrote: The right tool for the right job BPEL and BPMN are both ‘languages’ or ‘notations’ for describing and executing business processes. Both are open standards. Most business process engines will support one or the other of these languages. Oracle however has chosen to support both and treat them as equals. This means that you have the freedom to choose which language to use on a process by process basis. And you can freely mix and match, even within a single composite. (A composite is the deployment unit in an SCA environment.) So why support both? Well it turns out that BPEL is really well suited to modeling some kinds of processes and BPMN is really well suited to modeling other kinds of processes. • The Windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.04 Dual Boot NIghtmare

  I have done some research as to how to go about this dual-boot, and I am close, but I need some guidance with booting into Windows 8 (Ubuntu is installed). I have a Lenovo Ideapad y510p. I will go over what I have done to dual-boot this laptop, with windows 8 pre-installed, with Ubuntu 12.04: I followed every instruction to the letter for the 97-vote response here, and everything worked fine up until after the repair boot section: Installing on a Pre-Installed Windows 8 System (UEFI Supported) I ran into the following error upon restarting after the repair boot section: error: invalid arch independent elf magic. This error (a grub issue) disabled me from booting into Ubuntu :( After a little googling, I followed the instructions in the reactivating grub 2 section to resolve the error: http://kb.acronis.com/content/1686 I found a possible solution to fixing the Windows 8 boot issue, and tried it: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:i9JMyXzzRpYJ:askubuntu.com/questions/279275/dual-boot-problem-windows-8-ubuntu-12-04+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=ubuntu I thought the above solution worked, but when I attempt to boot into Windows 8, I get the following missing file error: File: \Boot\BCD Status: 0xc000000e Info: The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors. Here is some other information that may be useful: I have 3 partitions devoted to Ubuntu. The first, sda8, has a flag bios_grub (1049 kb). The second, sda9, is where everything else is (96.6 GB). The last, sda10, is for swap (8299 MB). My question is: How do I fix the boot configuration for Windows 8? Any help would be greatly appreciated :) Update 1: When I attempt to boot into UEFI mode, I get the following error: invalid arch independent elf magic (the same error I saw in step 2). Update 2: A useful link here I found: Dual booting Ubuntu 12.04: UEFI and Legacy So, this is my 4th time installing Ubuntu on the laptop, and it looks like I need to install it in UEFI mode. Should I scrap it all again, and reinstall? Or is there ANY way of salvaging my installation? At this point, I can't even boot into Windows (although I have an installation cd to fix the windows boot issue, that would ultimately screw over ubuntu). Update 3: After doing a little more browsing around, I found a cool way around this messy grub stuff, using rEFInd. Rod Smith's post here saved me! Installing ubuntu 12.04.02 in uefi mode Now, I am able to dual-boot Windows 8 and Ubuntu and boot into both operating systems :) I have another issue (relating to the boot configuration in the bios) that I will post as a separate question :)

• GParted detects entire disk as UNALLOCATED SPACE + hd0 out of disk

  Good day to everyone. I hope someone can help me with my problem. I have a dual boot Windows and Ubuntu system. I recently encountered an hd0 out of disk error and wasn't able to boot Ubuntu. So I booted into Windows. After 2 to 3 times of booting and rebooting Windows, I tried booting Ubuntu again but still I get the same hd0 out of disk error. I decided to run Ubuntu from LIVEUSB to try to fix my Ubuntu partition using GParted, but when I run GParted, it shows my entire disk as UNALLOCATED SPACE! The strange thing is that Nautilus still shows and mounts my partitions. Also every time I boot into Windows , my partitions exists and I am able to read and write to them. I have no idea what is wrong. Please help! I can't stand using Windows since most of the tools I use are in Ubuntu. I don't mind reinstalling Ubuntu. In fact I already tried reinstalling using the LIVEUSB but since GParted or the Ubuntu installer itself does not recognize my partitions and shows the entire disk as unallocated space, I decided not to continue. I am currently running Ubuntu from LIVEUSB. UPDATE I think I might know the problem. The total sectors of sda is 625142448 but the extended partition (sda4) ends at 625153409. Now, my question is, how do I fix this or modify the extended partition (sda4) to matched the total number of sectors? Anyone, please??? UPDATE I was able to fix the unallocated space issue with the help of Rod Smith's tool called fixparts I am now able to view my partitions via GParted in LiveUSB. But the error: hd0 out of disk. Press any key to continue... still persists on reboot. I still can't boot into Ubuntu. Can someone help me please???

• Getting "Illegal Seek" error after calling accept()

  Well.. it's pretty much that, I seem to be getting a "Illegal Seek" error when checking my errno variable. The problem is that I have no idea of what that can mean. I know sockets are treated like files in unix, but I can't see how can this be related to sockets. What I'm doing exactly is: int sck = ::accept(m_socket, (struct sockaddr*)&client_address, (socklen_t*)&address_len); Then I get sck = -1 and errno = ESPIPE And the weird thing is that it happens randomly. I mean, sometimes the code works fine, and sometimes it just thows an exception. I'm working with threads so that's understandable. But I just would like to know what kind of behaviour makes the accept() call to set errno as ESPIPE so I could check the paramethers for instance. Thanks Nelson R. Pérez

  Hi everybody, I need to set up a simple event listener to refresh a listview from once in a while. The problem is I don't know how could I generate an event. I know that for events like key or button pressing I just need to implement the handler. But in this specific case I actually need to generate the event, which will be fired everytime another running thread of my app wakes up and refreshes it's list of news from a rss feed. • Curious: Could LLVM be used for Infocom z-machine code, and if so how? (in general)

  Forgive me if this is a silly question, but I'm wondering if/how LLVM could be used to obtain a higher performance Z-Machine VM for interactive fiction. (If it could be used, I'm just looking for some high-level ideas or suggestions, not a detailed solution.) It might seem odd to desire higher performance for a circa-1978 technology, but apparently Z-Machine games produced by the modern Inform 7 IDE can have performance issues due to the huge number of rules that need to be evaluated with each turn. • Exploding maps in Reporting Services 2008 R2

  Kaboom! Well, that was the imagery that secretly appeared in my mind when I saw “USA By State Exploded” in the list of installed maps in Report Builder 3.0 – part of the spatial offering of SQL Server Reporting Server 2008 R2. Alas, it just means that the borders are bigger. Clicking on it showed me. Unfortunately, I’m not interested in maps of the US. None of my clients are there (at least, not yet – feel free to get in touch if you want to change this ‘feature’ of my company). So instead, I’ve recently been getting hold of some data for Australian areas. I’ve just bought some PostCode shapes for South Australia, and will use this in demos for conferences and for showing clients how this kind of report can really impact their reporting. One of the companies I was talking about getting shape files sent me a sample. So I chose the “ESRI shapefile” option you see above, and browsed to my file. It appeared in the window like this: Australians will immediately recognise this as the area around Wollongong, just south of Sydney. Well, apart from me. I didn’t. I had to put a Bing Maps layer behind it to work that out, but that’s not for this post. The thing that I discovered was that if I selected the Exploded USA option (but without clicking Next), and then chose my shape file, then my area around Wollongong would be exploded too! Huh! I think this is actually a bug, but a potentially useful one! Some further investigation (involving creating two identical reports, one with this exploded view, one without), showed that the Exploded View is done by reducing the ScaleFactor property of the PolygonLayer in the map control. The Exploded version has it below 1. If you set to above one, your shapes overlap. I discovered this by accident… I guess I hadn’t looked through all the PolygonLayer options to work out what they all do. And because this post is about Reporting, it can qualify for this month’s T-SQL Tuesday, hosted by Aaron Nelson (@sqlvariant). • HOWTO Turn off SPARC T4 or Intel AES-NI crypto acceleration.

  Since we released hardware crypto acceleration for SPARC T4 and Intel AES-NI support we have had a common question come up: 'How do I test without the hardware crypto acceleration?'. Initially this came up just for development use so developers can do unit testing on a machine that has hardware offload but still cover the code paths for a machine that doesn't (our integration and release testing would run on all supported types of hardware anyway).  I've also seen it asked in a customer context too so that we can show that there is a performance gain from the hardware crypto acceleration, (not just the fact that SPARC T4 much faster performing processor than T3) and measure what it is for their application. With SPARC T2/T3 we could easily disable the hardware crypto offload by running 'cryptoadm disable provider=n2cp/0'.  We can't do that with SPARC T4 or with Intel AES-NI because in both of those classes of processor the encryption doesn't require a device driver instead it is unprivileged user land callable instructions. Turns out there is away to do this by using features of the Solaris runtime loader (ld.so.1). First I need to expose a little bit of implementation detail about how the Solaris Cryptographic Framework is implemented in Solaris 11.  One of the new Solaris 11 features of the linker/loader is the ability to have a single ELF object that has multiple different implementations of the same functions that are selected at runtime based on the capabilities of the machine.  The alternate to this is having the application coded to call getisax() and make the choice itself.  We use this functionality of the linker/loader when we build the userland libraries for the Solaris Cryptographic Framework (specifically libmd.so, and the unfortunately misnamed due to historical reasons libsoftcrypto.so) The Solaris linker/loader allows control of a lot of its functionality via environment variables, we can use that to control the version of the cryptographic functions we run.  To do this we simply export the LD_HWCAP environment variable with values that tell ld.so.1 to not select the HWCAP section matching certain features even if isainfo says they are present.  For SPARC T4 that would be: export LD_HWCAP="-aes -des -md5 -sha256 -sha512 -mont -mpul" and for Intel systems with AES-NI support: export LD_HWCAP="-aes" This will work for consumers of the Solaris Cryptographic Framework that use the Solaris PKCS#11 libraries or use libmd.so interfaces directly.  It also works for the Oracle DB and Java JCE.  However does not work for the default enabled OpenSSL "t4" or "aes-ni" engines (unfortunately) because they do explicit calls to getisax() themselves rather than using multiple ELF cap sections. However we can still use OpenSSL to demonstrate this by explicitly selecting "pkcs11" engine  using only a single process and thread.  $ openssl speed -engine pkcs11 -evp aes-128-cbc ... type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes aes-128-cbc 54170.81k 187416.00k 489725.70k 805445.63k 1018880.00k $ LD_HWCAP="-aes" openssl speed -engine pkcs11 -evp aes-128-cbc ... type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes aes-128-cbc 29376.37k 58328.13k 79031.55k 86738.26k 89191.77k We can clearly see the difference this makes in the case where AES offload to the SPARC T4 was disabled. The "t4" engine is faster than the pkcs11 one because there is less overhead (again on a SPARC T4-1 using only a single process/thread - using -multi you will get even bigger numbers). $ openssl speed -evp aes-128-cbc ... type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes aes-128-cbc 85526.61k 89298.84k 91970.30k 92662.78k 92842.67k Yet another cool feature of the Solaris linker/loader, thanks Rod and Ali. Note these above openssl speed output is not intended to show the actual performance of any particular benchmark just that there is a significant improvement from using hardware acceleration on SPARC T4. • SQL Server Bulk insert of CSV file with inconsistent quotes

  Is it possible to BULK INSERT (SQL Server) a CSV file in which the fields are only OCCASSIONALLY surrounded by quotes? Specifically, quotes only surround those fields that contain a ",". In other words, I have data that looks like this (the first row contain headers): id, company, rep, employees 729216,INGRAM MICRO INC.,"Stuart, Becky",523 729235,"GREAT PLAINS ENERGY, INC.","Nelson, Beena",114 721177,GEORGE WESTON BAKERIES INC,"Hogan, Meg",253 Because the quotes aren't consistent, I can't use '","' as a delimiter, and I don't know how to create a format file that accounts for this. I tried using ',' as a delimter and loading it into a temporary table where every column is a varchar, then using some kludgy processing to strip out the quotes, but that doesn't work either, because the fields that contain ',' are split into multiple columns. Unfortunately, I don't have the ability to manipulate the CSV file beforehand. Is this hopeless? Many thanks in advance for any advice. By the way, i saw this post SQL bulk import from csv, but in that case, EVERY field was consistently wrapped in quotes. So, in that case, he could use ',' as a delimiter, then strip out the quotes afterwards.

• Can't seem to load a webview from xml, why?

  Well, I'm trying to follow the tutorial from http://rapidandroid.org/wiki/Graphing. But I found a problem just in the first part of it. I'll describe the problem here, I just cannot understand how this could be wrong, it's pretty simple stuff. What am I doing wrong here? First I created a xml file called statistics.xml, in it among other things I put this code: <WebView android:id="@+id/webview" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_width="fill_parent"/> Now in the activity that is supposed to display this webview I'm doing this: public class DisplayStatistics extends Activity { public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); WebView wv = (WebView) findViewById(R.id.webview); The problem arises here, as I seem to be getting null for wv whenever I test for it. Which means of course that findViewById(R.id.webview) couldn't find the view. But again, what am I doing wrong?? Of course I know I could also instantiate the webview directly from code without the need to specify it from the xml, but I was just wondering what was wrong about this way of doing it. Just in case I also added the following line in my android manifest file: <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" /> I'm not really sure if it's necessary for displaying the webview (I think not) but I just put it there to see if that was the problem, and it turned out it isn't. • Strange constructor

  Well, I'm gonna be pretty straightforward here, I just have a piece of code in c++ which I'm not sure I really understand and need some help with. Ok, to simplify lets just say I have a class that is defined like this: (the real class is a little bit more complicated, but this is what matters) class myClass : public Runnable { Semaphore *m_pMySemaphore; __Queue<Requests> *m_pQueue; Request m_Request; VetorSlotBuffer *m_vetorSlotBuffer; } Up to here nothing is wrong, myClass is just a regular class which has 3 members that actually are pointers to other classes and an object of the class Request, the implementation of those classes not being important for my point here. Then when this person implemented the constructor for myClass he or she did this: myClass::myClass() : m_pMySemaphore(0), m_pQueue(0), m_vetorSlotBuffer(0) { } It's pretty evident that those three variables are treated like that by the constructor because they are pointers, am I right? but what kind of syntax is that? am I setting the pointers to null by doing that? I've seen a little bit of c++ already but never found something like that. And secondly, what's the deal with the ":" after the constructor declaration? that I've seen but never took the time to investigate. Is this like an inner class or something?
