  • Should a C++ constructor do real work?

    - by Wade Williams
    I'm strugging with some advice I have in the back of my mind but for which I can't remember the reasoning. I seem to remember at some point reading some advice (can't remember the source) that C++ constructors should not do real work. Rather, they should initialize variables only. The advice when on to explain that real work should be done in some sort of init() method, to be called separately after the instance was created. The situation is I have a class that represents a hardware device. It makes logical sense to me for the constructor to call the routines that query the device in order to build up the instance variables that describe the device. In other words, once new instantiates the object, the developer receives an object which is ready to be used, no separate call to object-init() required. Is there a good reason why constructors shouldn't do real work? Obviously it could slow allocation time, but that wouldn't be any different if calling a separate method immediately after allocation. Just trying to figure out what gotchas I not currently considering that might have lead to such advice.

  • Log4net 1.2.10 running on .NET 1.1 and 2.0 not compatible

    - by Daniel Williams
    I have old code that uses log4net version 1.2.10 targeted for the .NET 1.1 platform. My current code uses lognet version 1.2.10 targeted for the .NET 2.0 platform When I mix the old and new code all hell breaks loose. Code written today on .NET 4.0 and VS2010 can use the 2.0 log4net dll just fine. but if I put in the 1.1 version, it breaks. Conversely, the old dlls will break if I use the 2.0 log4net dll. I do not want to force my old dlls onto 2.0. Is there a good solution? I guess what bugs me most is that the log4net has the same version number, but I cannot fool my code and dlls into working with a single version.

  • jQuery selector after dynamically created element

    - by Bryan Williams
    I am trying to get an dynamically created element using a jQuery selector but it is returning an empty array. The first thing I am doing is grabbing an empty div: var packDiv = document.getElementById('templates'); packDiv.innerHTML = ""; then adding items to it in a loop: packDiv.innerHTML = packDiv.innerHTML + "<img id='" + thumbName + "' src='thumbs/" + thumbName + "'/>"; after the loop finishes I try to select an item using: console.log($("#"+thumbName)); and it returns the empty array. All the things I search on show to use .on but all the examples show that is to set event handlers. My question is how do I format a selector for dynamically created elements?

  • Show content with fancybox like a Javascript Alert

    - by Ron Lens
    I try to show the content from a PHP-file in a fancybox but I can't handle it. Now it's the following situation: If a file permission problem occures a <div id="error"> is shown on the website. I'd like to have the content from <div id="error"> in fancybox. Everything I try I get the notice "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later." That means the fancybox, it the file permission error occures, should be shown when the page is loading and not like usual shown when some events like click or mouseover. For example, if the error exists, the following content should be shown in the fancybox: <div style="width:100px; height:100px; background:#f00;"> <p>Failure</p> </div> This snippet is located in a file security_check.php. Now there are two possibilities. The 1st is to load the security_check.php directly into the fancybox or to put in the mentioned above snippet. So: how to load file contents into the fancybox?

  • Perl launched from Java takes forever

    - by Wade Williams
    I know this is an absolute shot in the dark, but we're absolutely perplexed. A perl (5.8.6) script run by Java (1.5) is taking more than an hour to complete. The same script, when run manually from the command line takes 12 minutes to complete. This is on a Linux host. Logging is the same in both cases and the script is run with the same parameters in both cases. The script does some complex stuff like Oracle DB access, some scp's, etc, but again, it does the exact same actions in both cases. We're stumped. Has anyone ever run into a similar situation? If not and if you were faced with the same situation, how would you consider debugging it?

  • Vertical line on HxW canvas of pixels

    - by bobby williams
    I searched and found nothing. I'm trying to draw lines (simple y=mx+b ones) on a canvas of black pixels. It works fine, but no line occurs when it is vertical. I'm not sure why. My first if statement checks if the denominator is zero, therefore m is undefined and no need for a line equation. My second and third if statement check how steep it is and based on that, calculate the points in between. I don't think there is a need for other classes, since I think there is a bug in my code or I'm just not translating the mathematics into code properly. If more is needed, I'll be happy to post more. /** * Returns an collection of points that connects p1 and p2 */ public ArrayList getPoints() { ArrayList points = new ArrayList(); // checks to see if denominator in m is zero. if zero, undefined. if ((p2.getX() - p1.getX()) == 0) { for (int y = p1.getY(); y<p2.getY(); y++) { points.add(new Point(p1.getX(), y, getColor())); } } double m = (double)(p2.getY()-p1.getY())/(double)(p2.getX()-p1.getX()); int b = (int)(p1.getY() - (m * p1.getX())); // checks to see if slope is steep. if (m > -1 || m < 1) { for (int x = p1.getX(); x<p2.getX(); x++) { int y = (int) ((m*x)+b); points.add(new Point(x, y, getColor())); } } // checks to see if slope is not steep. if (m <= -1 || m >= 1) { for (int y = p1.getY(); y<p2.getY(); y++) { int x = (int) ((y-b)/m); points.add(new Point(x, y, getColor())); } } return points; }

  • Editable CATextLayer?

    - by Ron
    I have several CATextLayers. When I doubleclick one of them, I want to be able to edit it's string. Think of text as it's handled in Keynote or many other apps. Any ideas? I thought of putting an editable textfield right in front of the layer and then dismiss it on enter, but I didn't get far. :-( I target Mac OS X 10.5 with Objective-C 2.0 and Garbage Collection. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

  • Tree iterator, can you optimize this any further?

    - by Ron
    As a follow up to my original question about a small piece of this code I decided to ask a follow up to see if you can do better then what we came up with so far. The code below iterates over a binary tree (left/right = child/next ). I do believe there is room for one less conditional in here (the down boolean). The fastest answer wins! The cnt statement can be multiple statements so lets make sure this appears only once The child() and next() member functions are about 30x as slow as the hasChild() and hasNext() operations. Keep it iterative <-- dropped this requirement as the recursive solution presented was faster. This is C++ code visit order of the nodes must stay as they are in the example below. ( hit parents first then the children then the 'next' nodes). BaseNodePtr is a boost::shared_ptr as thus assignments are slow, avoid any temporary BaseNodePtr variables. Currently this code takes 5897ms to visit 62200000 nodes in a test tree, calling this function 200,000 times. void processTree (BaseNodePtr current, unsigned int & cnt ) { bool down = true; while ( true ) { if ( down ) { while (true) { cnt++; // this can/will be multiple statesments if (!current->hasChild()) break; current = current->child(); } } if ( current->hasNext() ) { down = true; current = current->next(); } else { down = false; current = current->parent(); if (!current) return; // done. } } }

  • True / false evaluation doesn't work as expected in Scheme

    - by ron
    I'm trying to compare two booleans : (if (equal? #f (string->number "123b")) "not a number" "indeed a number") When I run this in the command line of DrRacket I get "not a number" , however , when I put that piece of code in my larger code , the function doesn't return that string ("not a number") , here's the code : (define (testing x y z) (define badInput "ERROR") (if (equal? #f (string->number "123b")) "not a number" "indeed a number") (display x)) And from command line : (testing "123" 1 2) displays : 123 Why ? Furthermore , how can I return a value , whenever I choose ? Here is my "real" problem : I want to do some input check to the input of the user , but the thing is , that I want to return the error message if I need , before the code is executed , because if won't - then I would run the algorithm of my code for some incorrect input : (define (convert originalNumber s_oldBase s_newBase) (define badInput "ERROR") ; Input check - if one of the inputs is not a number then return ERROR (if (equal? #f (string->number originalNumber)) badInput) (if (equal? #f (string->number s_oldBase)) badInput) (if (equal? #f (string->number s_newBase)) badInput) (define oldBase (string->number s_oldBase)) (define newBase (string->number s_newBase)) (define outDecimal (convertIntoDecimal originalNumber oldBase)) (define result "") ; holds the new number (define remainder 0) ; remainder for each iteration (define whole 0) ; the whole number after dividing (define temp 0) (do() ((= outDecimal 0)) ; stop when the decimal value reaches 0 (set! whole (quotient outDecimal newBase)) ; calc the whole number (set! temp (* whole newBase)) (set! remainder (- outDecimal temp)) ; calc the remainder (set! result (appending result remainder)) ; append the result (set! outDecimal (+ whole 0)) ; set outDecimal = whole ) ; end of do (if (> 1 0) (string->number (list->string(reverse (string->list result))))) ) ;end of method This code won't work since it uses another method that I didn't attach to the post (but it's irrelevant to the problem . Please take a look at those three IF-s ... I want to return "ERROR" if the user put some incorrect value , for example (convert "23asb4" "b5" "9") Thanks

  • How to generate a LONG guid?

    - by Ron
    I would like to generate a long UUID - something like the session key used by gmail. It should be at least 256 chars and no more than 512. It can contain all alpha-numeric chars and a few special chars (the ones below the function keys on the keyboard). Has this been done already or is there a sample out there? C++ or C#

  • Accessing 'data' argument of with() function?

    - by Ken Williams
    Is it possible, in the expr expression of the with() function, to access the data argument directly? Here's what I mean conceptually: > print(df) result qid f1 f2 f3 -1 1 0.0000 0.1253 0.0000 -1 1 0.0098 0.0000 0.0000 1 1 0.0000 0.0000 0.1941 -1 2 0.0000 0.2863 0.0948 1 2 0.0000 0.0000 0.0000 1 2 0.0000 0.7282 0.9087 > with(df, subset(.data, select=f1:f3)) # Doesn't work Of course the above example is kind of silly, but it would be handy for things like this: with(subset(df, f2>0), foo(qid, vars=subset(.data, select=f1:f3))) I tried to poke around with environment() and parent.frame() etc., but didn't come up with anything that worked. Maybe this is really a question about eval(), since that's how with.default() is implemented.

  • Tokenizing a string with variable whitespace

    - by Ron Holcomb
    I've read through a few threads detailing how to tokenize strings, but I'm apparently too thick to adapt their suggestions and solutions into my program. What I'm attempting to do is tokenize each line from a large (5k+) line file into two strings. Here's a sample of the lines: 0 -0.11639404 9.0702948e-05 0.00012207031 0.0001814059 0.051849365 0.00027210884 0.062103271 0.00036281179 0.034423828 0.00045351474 0.035125732 The difference I'm finding between my lines and the other sample input from other threads is that I have a variable amount of whitespace between the parts that I want to tokenize. Anyways, here's my attempt at tokenizing: #include <iostream> #include <iomanip> #include <fstream> #include <string> using namespace std; int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { ifstream input; ofstream output; string temp2; string temp3; input.open(argv[1]); output.open(argv[2]); if (input.is_open()) { while (!input.eof()) { getline(input, temp2, ' '); while (!isspace(temp2[0])) getline(input, temp2, ' '); getline (input, temp3, '\n'); } input.close(); cout << temp2 << endl; cout << temp3 << endl; return 0; } I've clipped it some, since the troublesome bits are here. The issue that I'm having is that temp2 never seems to catch a value. Ideally, it should get populated with the first column of numbers, but it doesn't. Instead, it is blank, and temp3 is populated with the entire line. Unfortunately, in my course we haven't learned about vectors, so I'm not quite sure how to implement them in the other solutions for this I've seen, and I'd like to not just copy-paste code for assignments to get things work without actually understanding it. So, what's the extremely obvious/already been answered/simple solution I'm missing? I'd like to stick to standard libraries that g++ uses if at all possible.

  • get next available integer using LINQ

    - by Daniel Williams
    Say I have a list of integers: List<int> myInts = new List<int>() {1,2,3,5,8,13,21}; I would like to get the next available integer, ordered by increasing integer. Not the last or highest one, but in this case the next integer that is not in this list. In this case the number is 4. Is there a LINQ statement that would give me this? As in: var nextAvailable = myInts.SomeCoolLinqMethod(); Edit: Crap. I said the answer should be 2 but I meant 4. I apologize for that! For example: Imagine that you are responsible for handing out process IDs. You want to get the list of current process IDs, and issue a next one, but the next one should not just be the highest value plus one. Rather, it should be the next one available from an ordered list of process IDs. You could get the next available starting with the highest, it does not really matter.

  • How to override jquery's show() and hide() functions

    - by Max Williams
    hi all Short version of question: see title Long version of question: I've used jquery's show() and hide() functions extensively in my code and just encountered a bit of a problem: they work by changing the display attribute of the element to 'block' or 'none' respectively, so that if you have somethin that has display: inline and then hide and show it, you've changed its display to block, which screws up the layout in a couple of cases. In my code, whenever i want something to be hidden initially i give it a class 'hidden'. This class is simply {display: none}. I'd like the change show and hide to remove or add this class, instead of directly changing the display attribute, so that if you add the hidden class and then remove it again (ie hide and show something) then it's back to exactly how it was to start off with (since adding a class overrides the attributes rather than directly changing them). Something like this (this is a little pseucodey as i don't know how to set the function up properly - let's assume that 'this' is the object that show/hide was called on) function show(){ this.removeClass("hidden"); } function hide(){ this.addClass("hidden"); } how and where would i go about overriding the jquery methods? (I'm not a javascript expert) thanks - max
