• Low CPU performance with low usage and clock - Windows 8.1

  I recently deleted everything from my PC and reinstalled Windows 8.1 from scratch. When I first booted into Windows everything was extremely slow though the CPU usage was very low (about 1%). After installing some drivers the problem seemed to be solved, I was able to use my PC normally. Today I installed a game and I noticed a strange behavior: the game was playable but the performance worsened more and more in the time. This is the situation BEFORE opening the game (normal): This is AFTER some minutes inside the game (low CPU usage and clock): Some information about my system: PC: Sony Vaio S13 (SVS13A1C5E) OS: Windows 8.1 CPU: Intel Core i7-3520M 2.90GHz GPU(1): Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU(2): NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE I tried searching for new drivers and other solutions but noting worked and I don't know what is the cause. I did not checked the temperatures but the fans are not running fast and the PC does not look overheated. Update: Max CPU Temp: 66°C, Max GPU Temp: 61°C The strange thing is that the GPU load is 99% (GPU-Z) and the fan is almost silent. Update 2: I had troubles with Sony Vaio software, I can't get the FN keys and the STAMINA/SPEED switch to work (it is a physical switch to enable/disable the Nvidia card and change the Power Profile). I'm saying this because I remember that before reinstalling Windows there was an option in the Vaio Control Center (now it is not there anymore) that allowed me to choose from something like "priority to performance (ventilation)" or "priority to silence". The current behavior looks like a "priority to silence", but I can't get the stamina-speed switch to work and so I don't see similar oprions in the Vaio Control Center. I don't know if the problem is related to this.

• Windows Vista will not boot; the file header checksum does not match the computed checksum

  Right out of the blue, my wife's Sony Vaio stopped booting. This, not so fun, error message displays immediately after POST: The system cannot boot. The file is possibly corrupt. The file header checksum does not match the computed checksum The repair option on the Vista DVD says everything is fine and dandy, it couldn't be more happier or more clueless... Any ideas? Update: CHKDSK reports no issues. CHKDSK /r reports no issues. (Heck, both Windows Repair and CHKDSK could just as well tell me that I have won on lottery or that the earth is flat... ) Some have reported that a mem diagnostic could help, but for me the mem diag has just ran through 5 passes. It doesn't seem to help. According to Sony, pressing F10 should bring up the restore menu, but it doesn't, the error pops up straight after Bios POST. It seems that this error is first in line of all options at this point, and is doesn't put a smile on my face. I have attached an external USB drive and copied all user data/documents to it. I feel an OS re-install is around the corner.

• Why can't I boot in to Windows Recovery Environment to fix my HDD or salvage my data?

  I've been trying to get in to WindowsRE to salvage the files on my Sony Vaio laptop after it failed to load Vista (it finally, consistently displays "Error loading operating system" after months of such intermittent failures, usually rectified via restarts or utilizing Startup Repair or CHKDSK from WindowsRE) . The problem is, after successfully accessing it once after this failure (and many times before over the course of the laptop's life), I can no longer get it to load. During the last successful access (right after the failure), I ran startup repair, which itself failed and notified me that the boot sector was corrupt. I attempted to head in to Sony's proprietary recovery tools menu, which is accessible from WindowsRE when it is loaded from the recovery partition or recovery disk, however it hung. I have since been unable to access the recovery environment after restarting, using any of these methods: Access via the recovery partition (pressing F10 on boot) Access via recovery DVD (created using the same computer when it was healthy) Access via a Windows Vista installation DVD All three methods produce the same results: The computer acknowledges the boot attempt The computer successfully gets passed the "Windows is loading files" screen The computer successfully gets passed the Windows loading screen The computer then stalls at a black screen, while showing HDD activity (via indicator light). After a few minutes, the HDD activity ceases, and after a few more minutes, the over sized cursor that is utilized in WindowsRE appears on the black screen. The actual recovery environment, however, never appears, even after leaving the computer in such a state overnight. What is fustrating is that other bootable utilities, such as SeaTools for DOS and MemTest, boot up and run fine. In running perfectly normally, MemTest was able to produce a plethora of errors utilizing my RAM. I'm inclined to believe the RAM's faultiness may causing the WindowsRE booting to fail. Would this be a valid assumption? If I'm not mistaken, booting from external media utilizes the RAM, so such a reason is plausible, assuming my knowledge of bootloading is correct. Other than that, I can't figure out any reason why all the bootable utilities except WindowsRE run fine. Does anyone know what the problem is, or could be? Any solutions?

• Can't display RSSI values in Wireshark

  I am trying to analyze the up-link Wireless traffic generated by my Sony Ericsson phone and captured by my D-Link router, on which I installed the DD-WRT firmware. To do this, first I log in the router and enable the prism0 interface by typing the command: wl -i eth1 monitor 1 and then I start to capture the packets by typing: tcpdump -i prism0 ether src xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx -s0 -w /tmp/smbshare/sony_ericsson_test.pcap where xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx is the MAC address of my Sony Ericsson phone. After a while I transfer the sony_ericsson_test.pcap file to my computer and open it with Wireshark program. In order to display the RSSI values I follow this procedure: Edit - Preferences... - Columns - Press "Add" button - As "Field type" I choose "IEEE 802.11 RSSI" and finally I choose name "Power" and click on "Apply" button. The problem is that the column "Power" is empty with no RSSI values. Does Anyone has a clue on why are RSSI values not displayed? Maybe I am missing a passage. Looking forward to hearing from anyone of you! Thanks in advance for your help!

• Connecting a laptop to a TV via HDMI

  I just bought a new Dell XPS17 laptop (Win7) that only has HDMI output. My last 2 laptops had VGA, which I used to connect to my Sony Bravia 32" TV with no issues, but with the HDMI it's been quite a headache. Drivers for display adapters have been updated to the latest versions: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M I went to a store and plugged in to 4 different TVs from different manufacturers. A sales rep and I spent about 30 minutes being baffled by the results (which are the same as my current TV): Extreme buggy behavior in the Nvidia and Windows display/resolution control panel Can not extend or duplicate displays, can only select one Third and fourth output devices "randomly" detected by the Windows control panel Could not get the screen to fit the output (edges cut off on all sides by about a half inch) Resolution and colors less than perfect. Artifacts around text. Display "randomly" cuts out Defaults to TV output only when plugged in Can not change resolution on either device when connected No audio from the TV Plugged in to 3 monitors from different manufacturers: Defaults to duplicated displays when plugged in Everything works perfectly So far, four people have gone through all the settings in the latop with no luck. I had similar, but not exactly matching results with a different laptop. I'm using the Sony Bravia currently at home, but in order to get it to work I have to turn on the laptop, wait until the display shows up on it, close the lid, then cycle through each output channel on the TV until I come back around to the HDMI port again, but still I have the symptoms described above. However: Once in a while, it just works. Sometimes, seemingly randomly, the output fits the screen perfectly. Sometimes the audio comes through the speakers too, but not always. Usually my screen saver "Mystify" will come up with a message that it cannot be displayed due to a limitation of the video card, but then sometimes it works fine. These 3 things seem to be independent of each other and don't always happen together. So, is there any way to get the laptop to output correctly to a TV, or is it just not meant to be?

  I'm having a runtime errror when i'm looking at the "workers" tab on resque-web (localhost). Everything else works. Edit: when this error occurs, i also have some (3 or 4) unknown workers 'not working'. I think they are responsible for the error but i don't understand how they got here Can you help me on this ? During my recent visit, one of my acquaintances suggested that I should blog about my travel experiences as well. This can be helpful to others who are traveling to the country or city. I have previously written about my experience about all the airlines in India. I would be writing about a few tips about traveling to the beautiful country Nepal today. Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal is very scenic. There are lots of historical places to see and visit. I was fortunate enough to stopover the Pashupatinath Temple, Bhaktapur, Vasantpur and the temple of Kumari Goddess. I also visited casinos there, but even if  I have stayed in Las Vegas for 3 and a half years before, I was not keen on them so I left the casinos just like what I did in Las Vegas . I also traveled to the famous Thamel area by car. Here are my quick tips for anyone who is planning to visit Nepal. They are not categorized but just written in the order that came to my mind. Please note that if you are an Indian, you will get a special privilege everywhere in Nepal, beginning right from the Indian airports. Use the expression “Nameste!” If you want to greet any Indian or Nepali. Indian Nationals do not need visa/passport to enter Nepal. In fact, Indian Nationals can just walk in to Nepal without any passport; but should have any valid Indian ID. There is no use of a passport since it will not be stamped at any immigration ports, whether in India or Nepal. Indian currency is widely accepted everywhere. However, please bring only Rs. 100 bills/notes as Rs. 500 or Rs. 1000 are not accepted. However, casinos there will accept larger bills. Indian National Language – Hindi is widely spoken and understood everywhere. I did not find a single person who had trouble speaking it. Nepali language uses the scripting language as Devnagari, which is similar to Hindi. Here, you will find food of almost every country.  The taste of Nepali food is authentic and very delicious. It is very safe to travel and move around in Kathmandu (despite what media suggests). However, it will really help if you have a friend who speaks Nepali. You can negotiate a few deals and cut off to almost 1/5 of the original quoted price of products sold here. If you are from Gujarat, India – you will find Nepali language sharing many common words. Temples are everywhere, so do not miss to visit a few of them. Pashupatinath is a must. Only followers of Hindu religion (from Nepal and India only) are allowed in most of the holy places. Camera is allowed everywhere except on the holy places. Now it is your turn to share your opinions or any suggestions. I think Nepal is a great country as there are lots of places to visit.   After having excellent response to my quiz – Why SELECT * throws an error but SELECT COUNT(*) does not?I have decided to ask another puzzling question to all of you. I am running this test on SQL Server 2008 R2. Here is the quick scenario about my setup. Create Table Insert 1000 Records Check the Statistics Now insert 10 times more 10,000 indexes Check the Statistics – it will be NOT updated Note: Auto Update Statistics and Auto Create Statistics for database is TRUE Expected Result – Statistics should be updated – SQL SERVER – When are Statistics Updated – What triggers Statistics to Update Now the question is why the statistics are not updated? The common answer is – we can update the statistics ourselves using UPDATE STATISTICS TableName WITH FULLSCAN, ALL However, the solution I am looking is where statistics should be updated automatically based on algorithm mentioned here. • SQL CE: Limiting rows returned in the query

  In SQL Compact Edition 3.5 , note that it is the Compact Edition I am talking about- Is there a way to limit the amount of rows to only 2? Something like using LIMIT or TOP. I really don't want to use anything with a SqlCEDataReader, or SqlCEResultSet. I want to do all the limiting in the query. Is this possible now? I have looked around and it doesn't seem so. EDIT- In response to Dave Swersky's request for data and using Min()/Max() on some columns as a means to get the top 2 lines, here is some sample (sterilized) data: Line Site Function Status 1010 Las Vegas new 4 1020 DC send 1 1030 Portland copy 1 1040 SF copy 1 1050 Portland copy 1 1060 DC send 1 *There are more columns than this but these are the significant ones. Sorry for the lack of intuitive data (but the actual data is even less intuitive!), but for security i need to change the data. So- i need to determine: what site the record was at in the preceding line to determine where it needs to be picked up. The site on any given line (except the first line with function = 'new') corresponds to where the item is going next. So simply grabbing that site off the same line wont tell me where it came from. The status will always be 1 or 4. The 4 corresponds to a where it has been delivered already and so i dont want to include those records in the result. But it might be useful in getting the pickup site. For this table of data i want the query to return the site corresponding to the line just above the first line with status 1. So- for this it would be Las Vegas.

• Switching to WPF, the best use of time at Visual Studio Launch 2010

  Yes, this is a programming-related question, if a little indirectly (that's why I marked it Community Wiki right away). For better or worse, I am switching from Winforms to WPF in April. I am also going to be in attendance at the Visual Studio Launch in Las Vegas. I have a real need to get up to speed quickly in WPF, so my question is: What sessions are going to be the best use of my time? I've got some picked out already, but I'm looking for some more advice on how to wade through all the marketing fluff and get some real educational value out of these few days. I have not been to one of these events before, so I don't really know how much is marketing hype, and how much is solid content. A couple of the workshops look interesting (VPR02 and VPS02), but I don't know enough about the actual content of these to justify the extra expense right now. Any thoughts there would be appreciated. And yes, I do have WPF learning planned other than just these few days in Vegas, but since I'm going to be there anyway, I want to learn as much as I can in the time available.

• Extracting and re-combining audio from a video

  I'm fed up with Vegas, Premiere, Pinnacle, SoundForge and all of the other editors I've tried. I'm trying to modify the audio of an AVI file, but all of the editors I've tried insist on re-encoding the video when I save the changes, and either reduce the quality or take hours. Is there a way to just extract the audio stream from a video with ffmpeg, edit it in an audio editor and then recombine the saved changes with the video?

When we populate the data in the column the index is update – resulting execution plan to be invalided – this leads to the statistics to be updated in next execution of SELECT. This behavior does not happen on Heap or column where index is auto created. If you explicitly update the index, often you can see the statistics are updated as well. You can see this is for sure happening if you follow the tell of John Sansom. John Sansom‘s suggestion: That was fun! Although the column statistics are invalidated by the time the second select statement is executed, the query is not compiled/recompiled but instead the existing query plan is reused. It is the “next” compiled query against the column statistics that will see that they are out of date and will then in turn instantiate the action of updating statistics. You can see this in action by forcing the second statement to recompile. SELECT FirstName, LastName, City FROM ExecTable WHERE City = ‘New York’ option(RECOMPILE) GO Kevin Cross also have another suggestion: I agree with John. It is reusing the Execution Plan. Aside from OPTION(RECOMPILE), clearing the Execution Plan Cache before the subsequent tests will also work. i.e., run this before round 2: ————————————————————– – Clear execution plan cache before next test DBCC FREEPROCCACHE WITH NO_INFOMSGS; ————————————————————– Nice puzzle! Kevin As this was puzzle John and Kevin both got the correct answer, there was no condition for answer to be part of best practices. I know John and he is finest DBA around – his tremendous knowledge has always impressed me. John and Kevin both will agree that clearing cache either using DBCC FREEPROCCACHE and recompiling each query every time is for sure not good advice on production server. It is correct answer but not best practice. By the way, if you have better solution or have better suggestion please advise. I am open to change my answer and publish further improvement to this solution. On very separate note, I like to have clustered index on my Primary Key, which I have not mentioned here as it is out of the scope of this puzzle.
