  • Right code to retrieve data from sql server database

    - by HasanGursoy
    Hi, I have some problems in database connection and wonder if I have something wrong in my code. Please review. This question is related: Switch between databases, use two databases simultaneously question. cs="Data Source=mywebsite.com;Initial Catalog=database;User Id=root;Password=toor;Connect Timeout=10;Pooling='true';" using (SqlConnection cnn = new SqlConnection(WebConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["cs"].ConnectionString)) { using (SqlCommand cmmnd = new SqlCommand("", cnn)) { try { cnn.Open(); #region Header & Description cmmnd.Parameters.Add("@CatID", SqlDbType.Int).Value = catId; cmmnd.CommandText = "SELECT UpperID, Title, Description FROM Categories WHERE CatID=@CatID;"; string mainCat = String.Empty, rootCat = String.Empty; using (SqlDataReader rdr = cmmnd.ExecuteReader()) { if (rdr.Read()) { mainCat = rdr["Title"].ToString(); upperId = Convert.ToInt32(rdr["UpperID"]); description = rdr["Title"]; } else { Response.Redirect("/", false); } } if (upperId > 0) //If upper category exists add its name { cmmnd.Parameters["@CatID"].Value = upperId; cmmnd.CommandText = "SELECT Title FROM Categories WHERE CatID=@CatID;"; using (SqlDataReader rdr = cmmnd.ExecuteReader()) { if (rdr.Read()) { rootCat = "<a href='x.aspx'>" + rdr["Title"] + "</a> &raquo; "; } } } #endregion #region Sub-Categories if (upperId == 0) //show only at root categories { cmmnd.Parameters["@CatID"].Value = catId; cmmnd.CommandText = "SELECT Count(CatID) FROM Categories WHERE UpperID=@CatID;"; if (Convert.ToInt32(cmmnd.ExecuteScalar()) > 0) { cmmnd.CommandText = "SELECT CatID, Title FROM Categories WHERE UpperID=@CatID ORDER BY Title;"; using (SqlDataReader rdr = cmmnd.ExecuteReader()) { while (rdr.Read()) { subcat.InnerHtml += "<a href='x.aspx'>" + rdr["Title"].ToString().ToLower() + "</a>\n"; description += rdr["Title"] + ", "; } } } } #endregion } catch (Exception ex) { HasanG.LogException(ex, Request.RawUrl, HttpContext.Current); Response.Redirect("/", false); } finally { cnn.Close(); } } } The random errors I'm receiving are: A transport-level error has occurred when sending the request to the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.) A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached. Cannot open database "db" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'root'.

  • Is asp.net caching my sql results?

    - by Christian W
    I have the following method in an App_Code/Globals.cs file: public static XmlDataSource getXmlSourceFromOrgid(int orgid) { XmlDataSource xds = new XmlDataSource(); var ctx = new SensusDataContext(); SqlConnection c = new SqlConnection(ctx.Connection.ConnectionString); c.Open(); SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(String.Format("select orgid, tekst, dbo.GetOrgTreeXML({0}) as Subtree from tblOrg where OrgID = {0}", orgid), c); var rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader(); rdr.Read(); StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(); sb.AppendFormat("&lt;node orgid=\"{0}\" tekst=\"{1}\"&gt;",rdr.GetInt32(0),rdr.GetString(1)); sb.Append(rdr.GetString(2)); sb.Append("&lt;/node&gt;"); xds.Data = sb.ToString(); xds.ID = "treedata"; rdr.Close(); c.Close(); return xds; } This gives me an XML-structure to use with the asp.net treeview control (I also use the CssFriendly extender to get nicer code) My problem is that if I logon on my pc with a code that gives me access on a lower level in the tree hierarchy (it's an orgianization hierarchy), it somehow "remembers" what level i logon at. So when my coworker tests from her computer with another code, giving access to another place in the tree, she get's the same tree as me. (The tree is supposed to show your own level and down.) I have added a html-comment to show what orgid it passes to the function, and the orgid passed is correct. So either the treeview caches something serverside, or the sqlquery caches it's result somehow... Any ideas? Sql function: ALTER function [dbo].[GetOrgTreeXML](@orgid int) returns XML begin RETURN (select org.orgid as '@orgid', org.tekst as '@tekst', [dbo].GetOrgTreeXML(org.orgid) from tblOrg org where (@orgid is null and Eier is null) or Eier=@orgid for XML PATH('NODE'), TYPE) end Extra code as requested: int orgid = int.Parse(Session["org"].ToString()); string orgname = context.Orgs.Where(q => q.OrgID == orgid).First().Tekst; debuglit.Text = String.Format("<!-- Id: {0} \n name: {1} -->", orgid, orgname); var orgxml = Globals.getXmlSourceFromOrgid(orgid); tvNavtree.DataSource = orgxml; tvNavtree.DataBind(); Where "debuglit" is a asp:Literal in the aspx file. EDIT: I have narrowed it down. All functions returns correct values. It just doesn't bind to it. I suspect the CssFriendly adapter to have something to do with it. I disabled the CssFriendly adapter and the problem persists... Stepping through it in debug it's correct all the way, with the stepper standing on "tvNavtree.DataBind();" I can hover the pointer over the tvNavtree.Datasource and see that it actually has the correct data. So something must be faulting in the binding process...

  • How do I get a delete trigger working using fluent API in CTP5?

    - by user668472
    I am having trouble getting referential integrity dialled down enough to allow my delete trigger to fire. I have a dependent entity with three FKs. I want it to be deleted when any of the principal entities is deleted. For principal entities Role and OrgUnit (see below) I can rely on conventions to create the required one-many relationship and cascade delete does what I want, ie: Association is removed when either principal is deleted. For Member, however, I have multiple cascade delete paths (not shown here) which SQL Server doesn't like, so I need to use fluent API to disable cascade deletes. Here is my (simplified) model: public class Association { public int id { get; set; } public int roleid { get; set; } public virtual Role role { get; set; } public int? memberid { get; set; } public virtual Member member { get; set; } public int orgunitid { get; set; } public int OrgUnit orgunit { get; set; } } public class Role { public int id { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<Association> associations { get; set; } } public class Member { public int id { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<Association> associations { get; set; } } public class Organization { public int id { get; set; } public virtual ICollection<Association> associations { get; set; } } My first run at fluent API code looks like this: protected override void OnModelCreating(System.Data.Entity.ModelConfiguration.ModelBuilder modelBuilder) { DbDatabase.SetInitializer<ConfDB_Model>(new ConfDBInitializer()); modelBuilder.Entity<Member>() .HasMany(m=>m.assocations) .WithOptional(a=>a.member) .HasForeignKey(a=>a.memberId) .WillCascadeOnDelete(false); } My seed function creates the delete trigger: protected override void Seed(ConfDB_Model context) { context.Database.SqlCommand("CREATE TRIGGER MemberAssocTrigger ON dbo.Members FOR DELETE AS DELETE Assocations FROM Associations, deleted WHERE Associations.memberId = deleted.id"); } PROBLEM: When I run this, create a Role, a Member, an OrgUnit, and an Association tying the three together all is fine. When I delete the Role, the Association gets cascade deleted as I expect. HOWEVER when I delete the Member I get an exception with a referential integrity error. I have tried setting ON CASCADE SET NULL because my memberid FK is nullable but SQL complains again about multiple cascade paths, so apparently I can cascade nothing in the Member-Association relationship. To get this to work I must add the following code to Seed(): context.Database.SqlCommand("ALTER TABLE dbo.ACLEntries DROP CONSTRAINT member_aclentries"); As you can see, this drops the constraint created by the model builder. QUESTION: this feels like a complete hack. Is there a way using fluent API for me to say that referential integrity should NOT be checked, or otherwise to get it to relax enough for the Member delete to work and allow the trigger to be fired? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Although fluent APIs may be "fluent" I find them far from intuitive.

  • Web Services c#, Sending notifications Clients

    - by Diode
    I want to send a notification (say a string) to subscribers(subscribers ip addresses are in a database on the server side) by calling another method. when ever I call that method the output becomes error-some. [WebMethod] public string GetGroupPath(string emailAddress, string password, string ipAddress) { //SqlDataAdapter dbadapter = null; DataSet returnDS = new DataSet(); string groupName = null; string groupPath = null; SqlConnection dbconn = new SqlConnection("Server = localhost;Database=server;User ID = admin;Password = password;Trusted_Connection=false;"); dbconn.Open(); SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(); string getGroupName = "select users.groupname from users where emailaddress = "+"'"+ emailAddress+"'"+ " and "+ "users.password = " + "'" +password+"'"; cmd.CommandText = getGroupName; cmd.Connection = dbconn; SqlDataReader reader = null; try { reader = cmd.ExecuteReader(); while (reader.Read()) { groupName = reader["groupname"].ToString(); } } catch (Exception) { groupPath = "Invalied"; } dbconn.Close(); dbconn.Open(); if (groupName != null) { string getPath = "select groups.grouppath from groups where groupname = " + "'" + groupName + "'"; cmd.CommandText = getPath; cmd.Connection = dbconn; try { reader = cmd.ExecuteReader(); while (reader.Read()) { groupPath = reader["grouppath"].ToString(); } } catch { groupPath = "Invalied"; } } else groupPath = "Invalied"; dbconn.Close(); if (groupPath != "Invalied") { dbconn.Open(); string getPath = "update users set users.ipaddress = "+"'"+ipAddress+"'"+" where users.emailaddress = " + "'" + emailAddress + "'"; cmd.CommandText = getPath; cmd.Connection = dbconn; cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); dbconn.Close(); } NotifyUsers(); //NotifyUsers nu = new NotifyUsers(); //List<string> ipList = new List<string>(); //ipList.Add("192.168.56.1"); //nu.Notify(); return groupPath; } private void NotifyUsers() { Socket sock = new Socket(AddressFamily.InterNetwork, SocketType.Dgram, ProtocolType.Udp); byte[] ipb = Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes("255.255.255.255"); IPAddress ipAddress = new IPAddress(ipb); IPEndPoint endPoint = new IPEndPoint(ipAddress, 15000); string notification = "new_update"; byte[] sendBuffer = Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(notification); sock.SendTo(sendBuffer, endPoint); sock.Close(); } This is what has to be basically done. in the server side I have a listening thread and it gets notification when the server sends data( assume for now the database contains client ip address). then ever I call the web method it gives a error "invalid IPAddress" atline byte[] ipb = Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes("255.255.255.255"); thank you :) since this is my first ever post please be kind enough to give me a better feedback too :) thaks

  • Update transaction in SQL Server 2008 R2 from ASP.Net not working

    - by Amarus
    Hello! Even though I've been a stalker here for ages, this is the first post I'm making. Hopefully, it won't end here and more optimistically future posts might actually be me trying to give a hand to someone else, I do owe this community that much and more. Now, what I'm trying to do is simple and most probably the reason behind it not working is my own stupidity. However, I'm stumped here. I'm working on an ASP.Net website that interacts with an SQL Server 2008 R2 database. So far everything has been going okay but updating a row (or more) just won't work. I even tried copying and pasting code from this site and others but it's always the same thing. In short: No exception or errors are shown when the update command executes (it even gives the correct count of affected rows) but no changes are actually made on the database. Here's a simplified version of my code (the original had more commands and tons of parameters each, but even when it's like this it doesn't work): protected void btSubmit_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { using (SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ApplicationServices"].ConnectionString)) { string commandString = "UPDATE [impoundLotAlpha].[dbo].[Vehicle]" + "SET [VehicleMake] = @VehicleMake" + " WHERE [ComplaintID] = @ComplaintID"; using (SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand(commandString, connection)) { SqlTransaction transaction = null; try { command.Connection.Open(); transaction = connection.BeginTransaction(IsolationLevel.Serializable); command.Transaction = transaction; SqlParameter complaintID = new SqlParameter("@complaintID", SqlDbType.Int); complaintID.Value = HttpContext.Current.Request.QueryString["complaintID"]; command.Parameters.Add(complaintID); SqlParameter VehicleMake = new SqlParameter("@VehicleMake", SqlDbType.VarChar, 20); VehicleMake.Value = tbVehicleMake.Text; command.Parameters.Add(VehicleMake); command.ExecuteNonQuery(); transaction.Commit(); } catch { transaction.Rollback(); throw; } finally { connection.Close(); } } } } I've tried this with the "SqlTransaction" stuff and without it and nothing changes. Also, since I'm doing multiple updates at once, I want to have them act as a single transaction. I've found that it can be either done like this or by use of the classes included in the System.Transactions namespace (CommittableTransaction, TransactionScope...). I tried all I could find but didn't get any different results. The connection string in web.config is as follows: <connectionStrings> <add name="ApplicationServices" connectionString="Data Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=ImpoundLotAlpha;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> </connectionStrings> So, tldr; version: What is the mistake that I did with that record update attempt? (Figured it out, check below if you're having a similar issue.) What is the best method to gather multiple update commands as a single transaction? Thanks in advance for any kind of help and/or suggestions! Edit: It seems that I was lacking some sleep yesterday cause this time it only took me 5 minutes to figure out my mistake. Apparently the update was working properly but I failed to notice that the textbox values were being overwritten in Page_Load. For some reason I had this part commented: if (IsPostBack) return; The second part of the question still stands. But should I post this as an answer to my own question or keep it like this?

  • Repeater not repeating :0) (asp.net)(vb)

    - by Phil
    Morning stackoverflow, I have a repeater, with the following code in my aspx page; <asp:Repeater ID="Contactinforepeater" runat="server"> <HeaderTemplate> <h1>Contact Information</h1> </HeaderTemplate> <ItemTemplate> <table width="50%"> <tr> <td colspan="2"><%#Container.DataItem("position")%></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Name:</td> <td><%#Container.DataItem("surname")%></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Telephone:</td> <td><%#Container.DataItem("telephone")%></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Fax:</td> <td><%#Container.DataItem("fax")%></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Email:</td> <td><%#Container.DataItem("email")%></td> </tr> </table> </ItemTemplate> <SeparatorTemplate> <br /><hr /><br /> </SeparatorTemplate> </asp:Repeater> Then I have this code in my aspx.vb to get the data; If did = 0 Then s = "sql works on db server" x = New SqlCommand(s, c) x.Parameters.Add("@contentid", Data.SqlDbType.Int) x.Parameters("@contentid").Value = contentid c.Open() r = x.ExecuteReader r.Read() Contactinforepeater.DataSource = r Contactinforepeater.DataBind() End If c.Close() r.Close() If Not did = 0 Then s = "sql works on db server" x = New SqlCommand(s, c) x.Parameters.Add("@contentid", SqlDbType.Int) x.Parameters("@contentid").Value = contentid x.Parameters.Add("@did", SqlDbType.Int) x.Parameters("@did").Value = did c.Open() r = x.ExecuteReader r.Read() Contactinforepeater.DataSource = r Contactinforepeater.DataBind() End If r.Close() c.Close() If 'did' is or is not '0' I still get no data outputted to the page. I just get the 'contact information' h1 header from the header template. I've tested the value of s in sqlsms and it works fine. Position, surname, telephone, fax, email all exist in the db. The particular page I am checking exists and has 1 set of contact information attached. Where am I going wrong? Thanks! ps. Does my syntax appear correct? pps. I am also open to different ways of achieving the same result. I tried via an sqldatasource but ran into problems when using variables as params (there is no option to select them, only controls, querystring etc)

  • Cast error on SQLDataReader (entlib 5.0, asp.net 3.5, vb)

    - by Phil
    My site is using enterprise library v 5.0. Mainly the DAAB. Some functions such as executescalar, executedataset are working as expected. The problems appear when I start to use Readers I have this function in my includes class: Public Function AssignedDepartmentDetail(ByVal Did As Integer) As SqlDataReader Dim reader As SqlDataReader Dim Command As SqlCommand = db.GetSqlStringCommand("select seomthing from somewhere where something = @did") db.AddInParameter(Command, "@did", Data.DbType.Int32, Did) reader = db.ExecuteReader(Command) reader.Read() Return reader End Function This is called from my aspx.vb like so: reader = includes.AssignedDepartmentDetail(Did) If reader.HasRows Then TheModule = reader("templatefilename") PageID = reader("id") Else TheModule = "#" End If This gives the following error on db.ExecuteReader line: Unable to cast object of type 'Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data.RefCountingDataReader' to type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataReader'. Can anyone shed any light on how I go about getting this working. Will I always run into problems when dealing with readers via entlib?

  • SQL - .NET - SqlParameters - AddWithValue - Are there any negative performance implications when Par

    - by hamlin11
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.data.sqlclient.sqlparametercollection.addwithvalue.aspx I'm used to adding sql parameters to a sqlCommand using the add() function. This allows me to specify the type of the sqlParameter, but it requires another line to set the value. It's nice to use the AddWithValue function, but it skips the "specify the parameter type" step. I'm guessing this causes the parameters to be sent over as strings contained within single quotes (''), but I'm not sure. Is this the case, and does this cause significantly slower performance of the stored procedures? Note: I understand that it is nice to validate user data on the .NET side of things by specifying the data type for params -- I'm only concerned about reflection-type overhead of AddWithValue either on the .NET or SQL side.

    Middle-tier component will execute the data access routines in application. The component will call several SQL Server stored procedures to perform database updates. All of these procedure calls run under the control of a single transaction. The code for the middle-tier will implement the following objects: SqlCommand comm = connection.CreateCommand(); SqlTransaction trans; How i must add code to component to specify the highest possible level of protection against such errors(two users try to update the same data concurrently).

  • SqlDateTime overflow thrown by Typed DataSet Insert

    - by end-user
    I'm using a Typed DataSet with an Insert statement; I have a table that has a smalldatetime field defined to accept null values. When I insert from a .NET 2.0 FormView, I get a "SqlDateTime overflow. Must be between 1/1/1753 12:00:00 AM and 12/31/9999 11:59:59 PM." Now, I've read this post, and the parameter as sent to the class constructor is defined as global::System.Nullable<global::System.DateTime> DoB So, it looks like it should accept a Nullable obj. Additionally, the generated code is testing the value sent. if ((DoB.HasValue == true)) { command.Parameters[6].Value = ((System.DateTime)(DoB.Value)); } else { command.Parameters[6].Value = global::System.DBNull.Value; } Specifically, the error is occurring when generated SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteScalar() runs: try { returnValue = command.ExecuteScalar(); } So, I guess my question is: how do I use a Typed DataSet to set a blank value (passed from a FormView on CommandName=Insert) to a null in a database?

  • Does DataAdapter.Fill() close its connection when an Exception is thrown?

    - by motto
    Hi, I am using ADO.NET (.NET 1.1) in a legacy app. I know that DataAdapter.Fill() opens and closes connections if the connection hasn't been opened manually before it's given to the DataAdapter. My question: Does it also close the connection if the .Fill() causes an Exception? (due to SQL Server cannot be reached, or whatever). Does it leak a connection or does it have a built-in Finally-clause to make sure the connection is being closed. Code Example: Dim cmd As New SqlCommand Dim da As New SqlDataAdapter Dim ds As New DataSet cmd.Connection = New SqlConnection(strConnection) cmd.CommandText = strSQL da.SelectCommand = cmd da.Fill(ds)

    Can I reuse an existing result set to filter? Lets say I have a result set that contains all data. Then I want to filter that resultset. Can I just execute the sqlcommand on the same resultset? I tried and it didn't seem to work. Does someone know the reason? So the only way to make it work was to create a new resultset and execute the command on that one. So this way I'm always creating a new resulset, can this have some issue?

    - by reggie
    I am using C# and developing a winform application. I have a project class which has the project attributes. the constructor of the project class is as follows: newProject = new Project(GCD_ID.IsNull() ? (int?)null : Convert.ToInt32(GCD_ID), txt_Proj_Desc.Text, txt_Prop_Name.Text, ST.ID.ToString().IsNull() ? null: ST.ID.ToString(), cmbCentre.Text, SEC.ID.ToString().IsNull() ? null : SEC.ID.ToString(), cmbZone.Text, FD.ID.ToString().IsNull() ? null : FD.ID.ToString(), DT.ID.ToString().IsNull() ? null : DT.ID.ToString(), OP.ID.ToString().IsNull() ? null : OP.ID.ToString(), T.ID.ToString().IsNull() ? null : T.ID.ToString(), CKV.ID.ToString().IsNull() ? null : CKV.ID.ToString(), STAT.ID.ToString().IsNull() ? null : STAT.ID.ToString(), MW.IsNull() ? (Double?)null : Convert.ToDouble(MW), txt_Subject.Text, Ip_Num.IsNull() ? (int?)null : Convert.ToInt32(Ip_Num), H1N_ID.IsNull() ? (int?)null : Convert.ToInt32(H1N_ID), NOMS_Slip_Num.IsNull() ? (int?)null : Convert.ToInt32(NOMS_Slip_Num), NMS_Updated.IsNull() ? (DateTime?)null : Convert.ToDateTime(NMS_Updated), Received_Date.IsNull() ? (DateTime?)null : Convert.ToDateTime(Received_Date), Actual_IS_Date.IsNull() ? (DateTime?)null : Convert.ToDateTime(Actual_IS_Date), Scheduled_IS_Date.IsNull() ? (DateTime?)null : Convert.ToDateTime(Scheduled_IS_Date), UpSt.ID.ToString().IsNull() ? null : UpSt.ID.ToString(), UpFd.ID.ToString().IsNull() ? null : UpFd.ID.ToString(), txtHVCircuit.Text, cmbbxSIA.Text); My problem is that i cannot insert values into the database when the datetime variables and the integer variables are null. all this data are assigned to the variable from textboxes on the form.. bELOW is the database function which takes in all the variables and insert them into the database. public static void createNewProject(int? GCD_ID, string Project_Desc, string Proponent_Name, int Station_ID, string OpCentre, int Sector_ID, string PLZone, int Feeder, int DxTx_ID, int OpControl_ID, int Type_ID, int ConnKV_ID, int Status_ID, double?   • how to get the sql connection

    - by sweetsecret
    FS_Setting is a VB class which has all the details of the connections ie: Public Class FS_Setting Public Function Get_RS_Connection() As SqlConnection Try Get_RS_Connection = New SqlConnection("Data Source=***********;User ID=sa;Password=*****;database=*********") Catch ex As System.Exception Throw New System.Exception("Get_RS_Connection Error:" + ex.Message) End Try End Function I need to call the function Get_RS_Connection() in a different class instead of getting the connection all the way again and hard coding.... I want to call the above class where the SQL connection is declared Namespace FS_Library Public Class FS_Errorlog Inherits FS_BaseClass Try **cn = New SqlConnection("Data Source=***********;UserID=sa;Password=*****;database=*********")** cmd = New SqlCommand("dbo.FS_ErrorLog_ADD", cn) cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure cmd.CommandTimeout = Convert.ToInt32(ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("Command_Timeout")) Me.AddParameter(cmd, "@p_tableKey", SqlDbType.Int, tableKey) Me.AddParameter(cmd, "@p_FunctionCode", SqlDbType.Int, FunctionCode) Me.AddParameter(cmd, "@p_TableAlias", SqlDbType.VarChar, TableAlias) Me.AddParameter(cmd, "@p_ValidationCode", SqlDbType.Int, ValidationCode) If Filename = "" Then Filename = "N/A" End If Me.AddParameter(cmd, "@p_FileName", SqlDbType.VarChar, Filename) Me.AddParameter(cmd, "@p_Message", SqlDbType.VarChar, Message) Me.AddParameter(cmd, "@p_CreateUser", SqlDbType.VarChar, userID) Me.AddParameter(cmd, "@p_UserActionID", SqlDbType.UniqueIdentifier, UserActionID) cn.Open()

  • ado.net managing connections

    - by madlan
    Hi, I'm populating a listview with a list of databases on a selected SQL instance, then retrieving a value from each database (It's internal product version, column doesn't always exist) I'm calling the below function to populate the second column of the listview: item.SubItems.Add(DBVersionCheck(serverName, database.Name)) Function DBVersionCheck(ByVal SelectedInstance As String, ByVal SelectedDatabase As String) Dim m_Connection As New SqlConnection("Server=" + SelectedInstance + ";User Id=sa;Password=password;Database=" + SelectedDatabase) Dim db_command As New SqlCommand("select Setting from SystemSettings where [Setting] = 'version'", m_Connection) Try m_Connection.Open() Return db_command.ExecuteScalar().trim m_Connection.Dispose() Catch ex As Exception 'MessageBox.Show(ex.Message) Return "NA" Finally m_Connection.Dispose() End Try End Function This works fine except it's creating a connection to each database and leaving it open. My understanding is the close()\dispose() releases only the connection from the pool in ado rather than the actual connection to sql. How would I close the actual connections after I've retrieved the value? Leaving these open will create hundreds of connections to databases that will probably not be used for that session.

    I am having a hard time figuring out why the following constructor will not close connnections. When I view the active connections. Here is the code that I have. • How to pass the parameter in SQL query from PowerShell

    - by Zshava
    I have this code in PowerShell, that executes SQL query for UPDATE table: $Connection=new-object data.sqlclient.sqlconnection "server=server;database=mydb;trusted_connection=true;" $Connection.open() For( $i = 0; $i -le $ActID.Length; $i ++ ){ $cmd = New-Object System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand $cmd.Connection = $Connection $cmd.CommandText = " update Table set Note = @PATH " $cmd.Parameters.Add("@PATH", $ActID[$i].Values) | Out-Null $cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() } I try to update table with variable defined in this string: $cmd.Parameters.Add("@PATH", $ActID[$i].Values) | Out-Null But when i try to execute script, error log says that there is no value passed in $ActID[$i] Is there other methods to pass parameters (variables) in powershell queries?
