• Installing ant; clearly misunderstanding JAVA_HOME

  Hey all, I am installing ant on a Windows XP machine, and am following the instructions at Apache's manual site. It said to set JAVA_HOME, so I checked, saw there was no environment variable named JAVA_HOME, made one, and set it to "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_19" When I try to run ant debug, however, it tells me that JAVA_HOME is currently set to "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6" I'm guessing JAVA_HOME isn't an environment variable. But if it isn't one, I'm at a loss as to where to start looking for it. Anybody know? Edit: Oh yeah - it's bugging me for tools.jar as well, but I'm guessing that when I fix the JAVA_HOME issue, that will help the terminal find tools.jar as well. Or maybe I'm wrong. Thanks

• Will pool the connection help threading in sqlite (and how)?

  I currently use a singleton to acces my database (see related question) but now when try to add some background processing everything fall apart. I read the sqlite docs and found that sqlite could work thread-safe, but each thread must have their own db connection. I try using egodatabase that promise a sqlite wrapper with thread safety but is very buggy, so I return to my old FMDB library I start to see how use it in multi-thread way. Because I have all code with the idea of singleton, change everything will be expensive (and a lot of open/close connections could become slow), so I wonder if, as the sqlite docs hint, build a pooling for each connection will help. If is the case, how make it? How know wich connection get from the pool (because 2 threads can't share the connection)? I wonder if somebody already use sqlite in multu-threading with NSOperation or similar stuff, my searching only return "yeah, its possible" but let the details to my imagination...

  Where can I find out enough info about how Brushes work to implement my own System.Windows.Media.Brush? I can handle all of the freezable baggage, but it's not really obvious what I need to override to get it to work. Yeah, so I didn't mean that I want to use a predefined brush. I want to extend System.Windows.Media.Brush, which is an abstract class. This is all purely for my own edification. I'm not even sure what kind of brush I could make. • PHP check if file exists on my server, based on a full URL

  I have an app that generates invoices in the form of PDF files stored in a directory on my server. Before mailing out this invoices I'd like to make sure that the URL (not server path) which I store in my DB does indeed point to a valid PDF file. Something could have gone wrong that wrote a value to that field in the db, but for example the filename is missing; meaning the file is not in the specified directory. AFAIK file_exists just checks server paths but not URL's. I could always store the server path too, or assemble it, but I'm wondering if i can do this check based on a full http url ending with a filename? EDIT: yeah CURL occurred to me too but doesn't that seem a bit heavy for such a simple task? Perhaps I should just store the server path too.

  My particular scenario: - Main thread starts a worker thread. - Main thread needs to block itself until either worker thread is completed (yeah funny) or worker thread itself informs main thread to go on Alright, so what I did in main thread: wokerThread.Start(lockObj); lock(lockObj) Monitor.Wait(lockObj); Somewhere in worker thread: if(mainThreadShouldGoOn) lock(lockObj) Monitor.Pulse(lockObj); Also, at the end of worker thread: lock(lockObj) Monitor.Pulse(lockObj); So far, it's working perfect. But is it a good solution? Is there a better one?

• Kohana v3, automatically escape illegal characters?

  Quick question, does Kohana (version 3) automatically escape data that is passed into ORM::factory..... (and everywhere else that has to do with the database)? For example: $thread = ORM::factory('thread', $this->request->param('id')); Would the data passed in the second argument be auto-escaped before it goes in the SQL query or do I have to manually do it? Probably a stupid question and it's better to be safe than sorry, but yeah... I usually do manually escape the data, but I want to know if Kohana does this for me? Thanks

• setting up/installing/configuring nginx LEMP stack on fresh VPS server

  I need some help in settingup/installing and configuring nginx LEMP stack on a fresh new VPS i have. The specs of the CentOS 5.7 VPS are 2GB DDR3 ECC RAM(4GB burst), 1 core 1.5Ghz(3Ghz burst) and 100GB RAID 10 storage, unmetered bandwidth @ 100Mpbs all for a whopping $25/month(unbeatable, yeah i know :) Anyways i have followed this LEMP(will also need MySQL and PHP) stack guide on linode http://library.linode.com/lemp-guides/centos-5 but basically what i want is to be able to host multiple website on this webserver after everything is setup. I am used to using DirectAdmin control panel on other server and want to have things setup so i can host multiple websites...mostly wordpress and drupal themes. Lets say 10 websites on this nginx web server. So can someone please help me on what i need to do to take "full" advantage of nginx power and performance, while been able to easily manage these multiple websites (wordpress and drupal themes)? • Django, CSRF protection and js generated form

  I have to create a form dynamically via javascript (yeah, that sounds ugly, but read this for the reason) and wants to make its submission CSRF proof. Usually, I use the @csrf_protect decorator in my views, and the {% csrf_token %} tag in my templates, as recommanded in the doc. But what should I do with a client-side generated form ? If I add a '/get_token/' view to generate a token on the server and obtain its value (say, via JSONP), then that means that I'm creating a backdoor an attacker could use to bypass the protection. Kinda head-scratching. What would you recommand ?

• Eclipse and Cassandra

  I've searched various websites for instructions on how to link 'Cassandra' and 'Eclipse' and followed directions to the last detail in several sites. For some reason, while using Git Bash, I cant get through the 'ant build', via instruction in said mentioned locations across the web. In some location's its easy, just make sure you have; 1. Apache Cassandra source 2. Apache Ant 3. Git So, yeah I've downloaded all the above, tried the same directory, different directories, etc., although still unable to get past the middle step of 'ant build'. • Drupal htaccess redirect - all files in directory to new directory

  Hiya, I've moved a site to Drupal, but am now getting a lot of 404 errors due to the search engines taking their time to update the indexes. The 404 paths all look similar to this: recipedata/ccp1300006/633_L.jpg recipedata/ccp1500005/risotto.jpg recipedata/ccp1500006/haddock.jpg So I'd like to do some htaccess redirection with mod_rewrite to take care of this lot. All the images DO exist - the path has just changed to /sites/default/files/images/ I've edited a lot of redirects into my htaccess already, but because the ccpXXXXXX directory changes I can't quite figure out the regex. This was my last attempt, but yeah - doesn't work :) Can anyone give me some pointers? • multiple jQuery Cycle slideshows get superimposed

  I'm using the jQuery cycle plugin to create multiple slideshows on a single page (which, once I get this problem figured out, will be started/stopped by mouse hover -- yeah, I know there are 9 slideshows on the page). Problem is, when I tell more than one slideshow to start cycling, whichever ones I call cycle() on get superimposed. So, all the images from slide 1 are superimposed, then they all transition to slide 2, etc. I can tell they're being superimposed because the first slide of each slideshow contains a transparent PNG. This happens whether I call cycle() in a jQuery each() iterator, or even if I call it by hand on just two or three of the containers with a jQuery id selector. • Debugging JavaScript in Internet Explorer

  I am working on a relatively complex JavaScript-driven website. It runs great in all browsers except Internet Explorer. I am getting this very curious error: "A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to Debug? Line: 93,865,600. Error: Expected ';'" The issue is, I don't have 93 million lines of code, and clicking "Yes" doesn't attach to Visual Studio like it normally does. I can click on 'No' and the website continues to run fine, but if a user doesn't have JavaScript debugging disabled, I don't want them to see this meaningless error. Suggestions/Tools/Plugins to get to the bottom of this? And yeah, I learned my lesson, switch over and check my project in Internet Explorer more often... Thanks,

• acts_as_taggable_on and auto_complete returning no results

  I'm using acts_as_taggable_on in a model, and am trying to implement the auto_complete plugin. It seems as though I have everything hooked up correctly, but the search isn't returning any results. • Sorting a vector of (double precision) reals and obtain their order

  Hello everyone, in C++ would like to sort a lengthy (2^20) vector of reals, obviously sort() does the trick. Having used R before I was used to the nice order() function which yields the permutation that leads to the sorted vector. Probably someone has done this in C++, maybe it's just my weak google-Fu that prevents me from finding it. And yeah, obivously my C++ newbness could stop me from spotting something straightforward. Example: x = {24, 55, 22, 1} then the permutation perm = {3, 2, 0, 1} maps the original x to the sorted x in ascending order. I can probably implement some bubble sort which does not only sort x but performs the same transpositions on the vector {0,1,2,...} and outputs both, but I believe someone must have thought about it and especially have done it efficiently. • Good reasons why to not use XIB files?

  Are there any good reasons why I should not use XIB / NIB files with an highly customized UI and extensive animations and super low memory footprint needs? As a beginner I started with XIB. Then I figured out I couldn't do just about everything in them. It started to get really hard to customize things the way I wanted them to be. So at the end, I threw all my XIBs away and did it all programmatically. So when someone asks me if XIB is good, I generally say: Yeah, if you want to make crappy boring interfaces and don't care too much about performance, go ahead. But what else could be a reason not to use XIB? Am I the only iPhone developer who prefers doing everything programmatically for this reasons?

Yeah, I know I post a lot of questions, but thats because I either need assurance that I am doing it right, what I am doing wrong, or if I am totally clueless, and cant find anything in the documentation. Anyways, I am trying to check for duplicate nodes. Here is how I would want to do it: Loop thru my nodes, and compare each single node's text (record), but if I got many nodes, wouldnt that be too time and memory consuming? • Unsigned versus signed numbers as indexes

  Whats the rationale for using signed numbers as indexes in .Net? In Python, you can index from the end of an array by sending negative numbers, but this is not the case in .Net. It's not easy for .Net to add such a feature later as it could break other code perhaps using special rules (yeah, a bad idea, but I guess it happens) on indexing. Not that I have ever have needed to index arrays over 2,147,483,647 in size, but I really cannot understand why they choose signed numbers. Can it be because it's more normal to use signed numbers in code?

  Hey Everyone, For a long time I have been using XHTML1.1 because I thought I was cool (yeah right). However, today I read Ian Hickson's Article about how everyone uses the wrong MIME type with XHTML and it opened my eyes a lot. I happen to be one of those people who are serving XHTML with text/html MIME, because like a lot of people, W3C says its "ok" to serve it this way. At the top of that article he says that "now" he would serve it using the HTML5 doctype (!DOCTYPE HTML). What are your thoughts about doing this? If I did not use unsupported functionality, would it be ok? What would the MIME type be in this case? Thanks for any help, Metropolis

• How to navigate through folders without opening a new buffer in Emacs?

  (I don't know if it is important, but I am using Aquamacs - and yeah, I am a newbie) When I want to open a file I use C-x C-f and usually just chose my home folder. From there I go clicking on folders until I find the file I want. I really don't like thought that each new file I open creates a new buffer. This is especially annoying because I am using Aquamacs with the window (tab) option enabled. I know I could simply get rid of the window option, but I quite like it, except of course for when I open a file and a zillion tabs are created. So my question is: is there a way to disable the new buffer creation when "navigating" through folders? Thanks :)

• Applying css media=print not working with MasterPages after pagebreaks

  Hi, I´m using a css media=print file in a Page that is using a MasterPage. I put some pagebreaks like this in certain parts of the html code: <h1 style="page-break-before: always; height: 0px; line-height: 0px;"> This works perfectly in the first page, meaning that the styles are applied correctly, but after the pagebreaks, the css is not working any more. Looking somewhere, the advice was to delete the masterpage, and yeah, it worked, but it is not the best thing to do, ´cause I have to remember changing this page if the masterpage changes. Anyone knows another way to solve this problem using MasterPages?

• Access Rails under /app/, not /app/public/

  I'm trying to deploy Rails 2.1.2 with Apache 2.2.10 and FastCGI (yeah, bad, ancient, ugly, I know). And I know it's no programming question, but please bear with me. My application can be accessed via example.com/app/public/, but I want to access it via example.com/app/. In my .htaccess-File (in the app/-directory!) I have: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase /app/ RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ public/dispatch.fcgi [QSA,L] How can I forward each request going to app/ to app/public/? Every time I try this (like, with RewriteRule ^.*$ public/$1 [QSA]) I get a routing error: No route matches "/app/" with {:method=>:get} Help?

• PHP math gets crazy, need explanation, my brain is melting

  I know that playing with php float can give strange results if you try to add "goats + apples", but please take a look to the following case: $val = 1232.81; $p1 = 1217.16; $p2 = 15.65; $sum = $p1 + $p2; $dif = $val - $sum; echo $dif; It will give you -2.2737367544323E-13 ... yeah, ALMOST zero, but then why it doesn't say 0 ? This freaks me out big time. Please, I need some valid explanation.

• Best cross-platform solution for network server?

  Hi, im starting a new project and for the first time i want to be cross-platform. But the tricky is my project would involve listen server, cryptos etc., etc. So i was wondering what is the best solution for cross-platform development (OpenSSL, instead of MSCrypto etc.) that would be easy to write with VS2010 (yeah the RC). The language is still not specified (depends on witch we would be easier) but im leaning to Visual C++. In Cross-Platform i mean windows/generic unix compilation.
