  • Help understanding the Single Responsibility Principle

    - by user204588
    I'm trying to understand what a responsibility actually is so I want to use an example of something I'm currently working on. I have a app that imports product information from one system to another system. The user of the apps gets to choose various settings for which product fields in one system that want to use in the other system. So I have a class, say ProductImporter and it's responsibility is to import products. This class is large, probably too large. The methods in this class are complex and would be for example, getDescription. This method doesn't simply grab a description from the other system but sets a product description based on various settings set by the user. If I were to add a setting and a new way to get a description, this class could change. So, is that two responsibilities? Is there one that imports products and one that gets a description. It would seem this way, almost every method I have would be in it's own class and that seems like overkill. I really need a good description of this principle because it's hard for me to completely understand. I don't want needless complexity.

  • Need some help understanding IO Statistics

    - by Abe Miessler
    I have a query that has a very costly INDEX SEEK operation in the execution plan. In order to track down the cause i set IO STATISTICS on and ran it. In the problem section it gave the following statistics: Table '#TempStudents_Enrollment2_____________________________________000000004D5F'. • Help understanding how to make a bar chart using ggplot2

    - by celenius
    I'm trying to use the bar_geom function of ggplot2, but I can't understand how to use it. I've made a small sample of my code to show what I am trying to do: library(ggplot2) # sample data sampleData = data.frame( v1=c('a','b','c','d','e', 'f','g', 'h', 'i','j'), v2=c(1:10) ) sampleData$Names = data.frame( Names = paste(sampleData$v1, sampleData$v2, sep="") ) sampleData$Values = c(1:10) # make plot x = sampleData$Values y = sampleData$Names qplot( x, y, data = sampleData, geom="bar" ) I want sampleData$Names to be on the x-axis of my graph, labeling each bar and and sampleData$Values to scale the bar height. I want the y-axis to be specified as a range. I realize that I don't understand how ggplot2 functions as this small example does not work, yet my other example is generating a plot but I cannot specify a y-range as it considers the variables to be categorical.

  • Understanding CSRF - Simple Question

    - by byronh
    I know this might make me seem like an idiot, I've read everything there is to read about CSRF and I still don't understand how using a 'challenge token' would add any sort of prevention. Please help me clarify the basic concept, none of the articles and posts here on SO I read seemed to really explicitly state what value you're comparing with what. From OWASP: In general, developers need only generate this token once for the current session. After initial generation of this token, the value is stored in the session and is utilized for each subsequent request until the session expires. If I understand the process correctly, this is what happens. I log in at http://example.com and a session/cookie is created containing this random token. Then, every form includes a hidden input also containing this random value from the session which is compared with the session/cookie upon form submission. But what does that accomplish? Aren't you just taking session data, putting it in the page, and then comparing it with the exact same session data? Seems like circular reasoning. These articles keep talking about following the "same-origin policy" but that makes no sense, because all CSRF attacks ARE of the same origin as the user, just tricking the user into doing actions he/she didn't intend. Is there any alternative other than appending the token to every single URL as a query string? Seems very ugly and impractical, and makes bookmarking harder for the user.

  • Help Understanding Function

    - by Fred F.
    What does the following function perform? public static double CleanAngle(double angle) { while (angle < 0) angle += 2 * System.Math.PI; while (angle > 2 * System.Math.PI) angle -= 2 * System.Math.PI; return angle; } This is how it is used with ATan2. I believe the actually values passed to ATan2 are always positive. static void Main(string[] args) { int q = 1; //'x- and y-coordinates will always be positive values //'therefore, do i need to "clean"? foreach (Point oPoint in new Point[] { new Point(8,20), new Point(-8,20), new Point(8,-20), new Point(-8,-20)}) { Debug.WriteLine(Math.Atan2(oPoint.Y, oPoint.X), "unclean " + q.ToString()); Debug.WriteLine(CleanAngle(Math.Atan2(oPoint.Y, oPoint.X)), "cleaned " + q.ToString()); q++; } //'output //'unclean 1: 1.19028994968253 //'cleaned 1: 1.19028994968253 //'unclean 2: 1.95130270390726 //'cleaned 2: 1.95130270390726 //'unclean 3: -1.19028994968253 //'cleaned 3: 5.09289535749705 //'unclean 4: -1.95130270390726 //'cleaned 4: 4.33188260327232 }

  • understanding the models in MVC

    - by fayer
    i cant fully understand the models in MVC. so i am using symfony with doctrine. the doctrine models are created. does this mean that i don't have to create any models? are the doctrine models the only models i need? where should i put the code that uses the doctrine models: eg. $phoneIds = array(); $phone1 = new Phonenumber(); $phone1['phonenumber'] = '555 202 7890'; $phone1->save(); $phoneIds[] = $phone1['id']; $phone2 = new Phonenumber(); $phone2['phonenumber'] = '555 100 7890'; $phone2->save(); $phoneIds[] = $phone2['id']; $user = new User(); $user['username'] = 'jwage'; $user['password'] = 'changeme'; $user->save(); $user->link('Phonenumbers', $phoneIds); should this code be in the controller or in another model? and where should i validate these fields (check if it exists in database, that email is email etc)? could someone please shed a light on this. thanks.

  • Trying to verify understanding of foreign keys SQL Server

    - by msarchet
    So I'm working on just a learning project to expose myself to doing some things I do not get to do at work. I'm just making a simple bug and case tracking app (I know there are a million this is just to work with some tools I don't get to). So I was designing my database and realized I've never actually used Foreign Keys before in any of my projects, I've used them before but never actually setting up a column as a FK. So I've designed my database as follows, which I think is close to correct (at least for the initial layout). However When I try to add the FK's to the linking Tables I get an error saying, "The tables present in the relationship must have the same number of columns". I'm doing this by in SQLSMS by going to the Keys 'folder' and adding a FK. Is there something that I am doing wrong here, I don't understand why the tables would have to have the same number of columns for me to add a FK relationship between the tables?

  • Understanding the output from svn export

    - by ThatBlairGuy
    Working on some tweaks for a build script, I noticed that the output from svn export has an 'A' in column 1 for each file exported. A C:\build\file1 A C:\build\file2 A C:\build\file3 The subversion book describes the meaning of the various columns for svnlook changes and svn status, but I'm not having much luck finding the meaning behind this one. What does the 'A' in column 1 mean? Are there any other values displayed there? Any other columns? Thanks!

  • Git tutorial: Understanding git pull and branches (using a specific example repo)

    - by dreftymac
    Backround: Suppose I have the following Git URLs (hosted on github) http://github.com/mikl/drupal.git git://github.com/mikl/drupal.git (Git read-only) I am interested in having a local copy of this repository so I can pratice working with branches in git and see how my local working tree can change depending on which branch I am working with. Questions: To get started, I set up a local directory and do git clone git://github.com/mikl/drupal.git ... Will this clone all of the branches? Or will it only clone master? The web front-end for github gives me a "drop down" menu that allows me to switch branches ... Does changing this drop-down actually change which branch I will be grabbing when I run git clone? If I want a new copy of this repository on my local machine, but I am interested in only two branches of this repository and I want to ignore all the rest, what command do I use to ensure I clone only those two branches and nothing else (assume one of the branches is master)?

  • Help understanding some OpenGL stuff

    I am working with some code to create a triangle that moves with arrow keys. I want to create a second object that moves independently. This is where I am having trouble, I have created the second actor, but cannot get it to move. • Understanding the "Instantiation" of Actionscript/Flash Objects

    - by parallax7d
    Could someone expand and clarify the different logical instantiations of objects in actionscript? So far it seems there are 3 layers of instantiations, for lack of a better term. The first one is declaring a variable/type. Next is instantiating that variable with something solid in the code, like a method or function? Is this just a way to glue things together? Then after that you instantiate it on the stage, is this something you have to do explicitly, or is it a side effect? Is this "3 layer" concept the correct way of looking at it, kind of like the MVC for flash app logic?

  • Understanding VS2010 C# parallel profiling results

    - by Haggai
    I have a program with many independent computations so I decided to parallelize it. I use Parallel.For/Each. The results were okay for a dual-core machine - CPU utilization of about 80%-90% most of the time. However, with a dual Xeon machine (i.e. 8 cores) I get only about 30%-40% CPU utilization, although the program spends quite a lot of time (sometimes more than 10 seconds) on the parallel sections, and I see it employs about 20-30 more threads in those sections compared to serial sections. Each thread takes more than 1 second to complete, so I see no reason for them to work in parallel - unless there is a synchronization problem. I used the built-in profiler of VS2010, and the results are strange. Even though I use locks only in one place, the profiler reports that about 85% of the program's time is spent on synchronization (also 5-7% sleep, 5-7% execution, under 1% IO). The locked code is only a cache (a dictionary) get/add: bool esn_found; lock (lock_load_esn) esn_found = cache.TryGetValue(st, out esn); if(!esn_found) { esn = pData.esa_inv_idx.esa[term_idx]; esn.populate(pData.esa_inv_idx.datafile); lock (lock_load_esn) { if (!cache.ContainsKey(st)) cache.Add(st, esn); } } lock_load_esn is a static member of the class of type Object. esn.populate reads from a file using a separate StreamReader for each thread. However, when I press the Synchronization button to see what causes the most delay, I see that the profiler reports lines which are function entrance lines, and doesn't report the locked sections themselves. It doesn't even report the function that contains the above code (reminder - the only lock in the program) as part of the blocking profile with noise level 2%. With noise level at 0% it reports all the functions of the program, which I don't understand why they count as blocking synchronizations. So my question is - what is going on here? How can it be that 85% of the time is spent on synchronization? How do I find out what really is the problem with the parallel sections of my program? Thanks.

Does it mean the following are legal? <bean id="test"> <bean name="test"> But this is illegal: <bean non_idnorname="test"> you may also or instead specify one or more bean ids (separated by a comma (,) or semicolon (;) via the name attribute. Does it mean I can specify multiple ids this way: <bean name="id1;id2,id3"> Can someone convince my doubt?

  • Understanding CLR 2.0 Memory Model

    - by Eloff
    Joe Duffy, gives 6 rules that describe the CLR 2.0+ memory model (it's actual implementation, not any ECMA standard) I'm writing down my attempt at figuring this out, mostly as a way of rubber ducking, but if I make a mistake in my logic, at least someone here will be able to catch it before it causes me grief. Rule 1: Data dependence among loads and stores is never violated. Rule 2: All stores have release semantics, i.e. no load or store may move after one. Rule 3: All volatile loads are acquire, i.e. no load or store may move before one. Rule 4: No loads and stores may ever cross a full-barrier (e.g. Thread.MemoryBarrier, lock acquire, Interlocked.Exchange, Interlocked.CompareExchange, etc.). Rule 5: Loads and stores to the heap may never be introduced. Rule 6: Loads and stores may only be deleted when coalescing adjacent loads and stores from/to the same location. I'm attempting to understand these rules. x = y y = 0 // Cannot move before the previous line according to Rule 1. x = y z = 0 // equates to this sequence of loads and stores before possible re-ordering load y store x load 0 store z Looking at this, it appears that the load 0 can be moved up to before load y, but the stores may not be re-ordered at all. Therefore, if a thread sees z == 0, then it also will see x == y. If y was volatile, then load 0 could not move before load y, otherwise it may. Volatile stores don't seem to have any special properties, no stores can be re-ordered with respect to each other (which is a very strong guarantee!) Full barriers are like a line in the sand which loads and stores can not be moved over. No idea what rule 5 means. I guess rule 6 means if you do: x = y x = z Then it is possible for the CLR to delete both the load to y and the first store to x. x = y z = y // equates to this sequence of loads and stores before possible re-ordering load y store x load y store z // could be re-ordered like this load y load y store x store z // rule 6 applied means this is possible? load y store x // but don't pop y from stack (or first duplicate item on top of stack) store z What if y was volatile? I don't see anything in the rules that prohibits the above optimization from being carried out. This does not violate double-checked locking, because the lock() between the two identical conditions prevents the loads from being moved into adjacent positions, and according to rule 6, that's the only time they can be eliminated. So I think I understand all but rule 5, here. Anyone want to enlighten me (or correct me or add something to any of the above?)

More than a problem with only smarty is with the whole MVC model, with CakePHP or KohanaPHP i experience the same problems, u need to do 3x lines of code and files for something that u can do with a few lines of simple php. Maybe u can tell how did u learned to code using MVC model :)

  • Need some help understanding this problem about maximizing graph connectivity

    - by Legend
    I was wondering if someone could help me understand this problem. I prepared a small diagram because it is much easier to explain it visually. Problem I am trying to solve: 1. Constructing the dependency graph Given the connectivity of the graph and a metric that determines how well a node depends on the other, order the dependencies. For instance, I could put in a few rules saying that node 3 depends on node 4 node 2 depends on node 3 node 3 depends on node 5 But because the final rule is not "valuable" (again based on the same metric), I will not add the rule to my system. 2. Execute the request order Once I built a dependency graph, execute the list in an order that maximizes the final connectivity. I am not sure if this is a really a problem but I somehow have a feeling that there might exist more than one order in which case, it is required to choose the best order. First and foremost, I am wondering if I constructed the problem correctly and if I should be aware of any corner cases. Secondly, is there a closely related algorithm that I can look at? Currently, I am thinking of something like Feedback Arc Set or the Secretary Problem but I am a little confused at the moment. Any suggestions? PS: I am a little confused about the problem myself so please don't flame on me for that. If any clarifications are needed, I will try to update the question.

Obviously it s command line parser but i m trying to understand the syntax so i can actually run the program. This is from commandline-jmxclient , they have no documents on setting JMX properties but in their source code, there is such an option, so i just want to understand how i can invoke that method. Hi, I have the Hibernate model @Cache(usage = CacheConcurrencyStrategy.NONE, region = SitesConstants.CACHE_REGION) public class Node extends StatefulEntity implements Inheritable, Cloneable { private Node _parent; private List<Node> _childNodes; .. } @Cache(usage = CacheConcurrencyStrategy.NONE, region = SitesConstants.CACHE_REGION) public class Page extends Node implements Defaultable, Securable { private RootZone _rootZone; ...... @OneToOne(fetch = FetchType.LAZY) @JoinColumn(name = "root_zone_id", insertable = false, updatable = false) public RootZone getRootZone() { return _rootZone; } public void setRootZone(RootZone rootZone) { if (rootZone != null) { rootZone.setPageId(this.getId()); _rootZone = rootZone; } } I want to get all pages ( call getSiteTree), so I using this query String hpql = "SELECT n FROM Node n "; See the trace I find Page.setRootZone(RootZone) line: 155 NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke0(Method, Object, Object[]) line: not available [native method] NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(Object, Object[]) line: 39 DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(Object, Object[]) line: 25 Method.invoke(Object, Object...) line: 597 BasicPropertyAccessor$BasicSetter.set(Object, Object, SessionFactoryImplementor) line: 66 PojoEntityTuplizer(AbstractEntityTuplizer).setPropertyValues(Object, Object[]) line: 352 PojoEntityTuplizer.setPropertyValues(Object, Object[]) line: 232 SingleTableEntityPersister(AbstractEntityPersister).setPropertyValues(Object, Object[], EntityMode) line: 3580 TwoPhaseLoad.initializeEntity(Object, boolean, SessionImplementor, PreLoadEvent, PostLoadEvent) line: 152 QueryLoader(Loader).initializeEntitiesAndCollections(List, Object, SessionImplementor, boolean) line: 877 QueryLoader(Loader).doQuery(SessionImplementor, QueryParameters, boolean) line: 752 QueryLoader(Loader).doQueryAndInitializeNonLazyCollections(SessionImplementor, QueryParameters, boolean) line: 259 QueryLoader(Loader).doList(SessionImplementor, QueryParameters) line: 2232 QueryLoader(Loader).listIgnoreQueryCache(SessionImplementor, QueryParameters) line: 2129 QueryLoader(Loader).list(SessionImplementor, QueryParameters, Set, Type[]) line: 2124 QueryLoader.list(SessionImplementor, QueryParameters) line: 401 QueryTranslatorImpl.list(SessionImplementor, QueryParameters) line: 363 HQLQueryPlan.performList(QueryParameters, SessionImplementor) line: 196 SessionImpl.list(String, QueryParameters) line: 1149 QueryImpl.list() line: 102 QueryImpl.getResultList() line: 67 NodeDaoImpl.getSiteTree(long) line: 358 PageNodeServiceImpl.getSiteTree(long) line: 797 NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke0(Method, Object, Object[]) line: not available [native method] NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(Object, Object[]) line: 39 DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(Object, Object[]) line: 25 Method.invoke(Object, Object...) line: 597 AopUtils.invokeJoinpointUsingReflection(Object, Method, Object[]) line: 307 JdkDynamicAopProxy.invoke(Object, Method, Object[]) line: 198 $Proxy100.getSiteTree(long) line: not available the calling setRootZone in Page makes Hibernate issue a hit to database. I don't want this. So my question is + Why query String hpql = "SELECT n FROM Node n "; issues un-expected trace logs like above. Why the query String hpql = "SELECT n.nodename FROM Node n " not? What is the mechanism behind? Note: Im using hibernate caching level 2. In case I don't want to see that trace logs. I mean I just get Node data only. How to do ? Thanks for your help. Sorry for my bad english :( Van

    I have taken slide show script from net. But There some functions i cannot understand here is script <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd" > <html lang="en"> <head> <title></title> <script> var interval = 1500; var random_display = 0; var imageDir = "my_images/"; var imageNum = 0; imageArray = new Array(); imageArray[imageNum++] = new imageItem(imageDir + "01.jpg"); imageArray[imageNum++] = new imageItem(imageDir + "02.jpg"); imageArray[imageNum++] = new imageItem(imageDir + "03.jpg"); imageArray[imageNum++] = new imageItem(imageDir + "04.jpg"); imageArray[imageNum++] = new imageItem(imageDir + "05.jpg"); var totalImages = imageArray.length; function imageItem(image_location) { this.image_item = new Image(); this.image_item.src = image_location; return this.image_item.src; } function get_ImageItemLocation(imageObj) { return(imageObj.image_item.src) } alert(imageArray[imageNum].image_item.src); function randNum(x, y) { var range = y - x + 1; return Math.floor(Math.random() * range) + x; } function getNextImage() { if (random_display) { imageNum = randNum(0, totalImages-1); } else { imageNum = (imageNum+1) % totalImages; } var new_image = get_ImageItemLocation(imageArray[imageNum]); //alert(new_image) return(new_image); } function getPrevImage() { imageNum = (imageNum-1) % totalImages; var new_image = get_ImageItemLocation(imageArray[imageNum]); return(new_image); } function prevImage(place) { var new_image = getPrevImage(); document[place].src = new_image; } function switchImage(place) { var new_image = getNextImage(); document[place].src = new_image; var recur_call = "switchImage('"+place+"')"; timerID = setTimeout(recur_call, interval); } </script> </head> <body onLoad="switchImage('slideImg')"> <img name="slideImg" src="27.jpg" width=500 height=375 border=0> <a href="#" onClick="switchImage('slideImg')">play slide show</a> <a href="#" onClick="clearTimeout(timerID)"> pause</a> <a href="#" onClick="prevImage('slideImg'); clearTimeout(timerID)"> previous</a> <a href="#" onClick="switchImage('slideImg'); clearTimeout(timerID)">next </a> </body> </html> here exactly i dont know what does acctually function of get_ImageItemLocation(imageObj) and imageItem(image_location) what does these two functions seperately? Thanks in advance for attention

  • Need help understanding _set_security_error_handler()

    - by Emil D
    So , I've been reading this article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa290051%28VS.71%29.aspx And I would like to define my custom handler.However, I'm not sure I understand the mechanics well.What happens after a call is made to the user-defined function ( e.g. the argument of _set_security_error_handler() ) ? Does the program still terminate afterward ? If that is the case, is it possible to terminate only the current thread(assuming that it is not the main thread of the application).AFAIK, each thread has its own stack , so if the stack of a thread gets corrupted, the rest of the application shouldn't be affected. Finally, if it is indeed possible to only terminate the current thread of execution, what potential problems could such an action cause? I'm trying to do all this inside an unmanaged C++ dll that I would like to use in my C# code.
