local wordpress installation not accessible from the outside world

I have a working installation of wordpress located in /var/www/html/wordpress It is accessible in my local network at [local-machine-ip]/wordpress/ There is also a test page located in /var/www/html/test.html It is also accessible in my local network at [local-machine-ip] I would like the wordpress website to be accessible from the outside world. I know that my ISP blocks incoming requests on port 80, so I set my router to redirect requests from port 8080 to 80. WordPress is enormously popular for blogs and full websites thanks to an awesome eco system which has built up around it, the simplicity (relatively) of getting it up and running plus the flexibility to “bend it” in all sorts of directions. Why is my WordPress installation unable to create a directory?

I am a new user of Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit and I want to test WordPress on my local PC installation. I've only installed LAMP and the latest version of WordPress for now. Further actions were creating a directory www in /home, i.e /home/www install wordpress in it. changed Apache to use /home/www instead of /var/www Apache is running smoothly & wordpress seems to be so as well. However, if try to change my background of my wordpress blog it throws an error Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2012/12. Is its parent directory writable by the server? Plese help me to resolve my problem.

grid layout default on wordpress theme

I'm having trouble with a multi-layout option on a wordpress theme sight http://sight.wpshower.com/ the traffic have the option of a grid or a list layout at the click of a button. at present the list layout is default. How come I can not install plugins on my local Wordpress install?

Hello, I got WordPress up and running fine on Ubuntu 10.04 by using this source except that when I try to update and install themes/plugins I get this following error message in wp-admin page: Installing Plugin: WordPress.com Stats 1.8.1 Downloading install package from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/stats.1.8.1.zip… Unpacking the package… Could not create directory. /var/www/wordpress/wp-content/upgrade/stats.tmp/stats Actions: Return to Plugin Installer At first I thought I had to setup an FTP account but searched more and I found some information that says that I need to change the permissions of the wp-content folder which is located in the directory: /var/www/wordpress/wp-content I tried changing it by doing: sudo chmod -R 777 wp-content/ but when I tried installing a plugin I got the same error message. I also tried passing it 755 as a permission but still got the same thing. I settled on 755 because it is more secure I have read. How can I solve this problem safely and securely?

Wordpress on Apache is redirecting all https to http

I have a problem with a wordpress site on a server I admin. I don't know anything about wordpress however. My problem is that we want the site to be accessed over https, bot somehow all requests to https:// URLs are answered by the server with a 302, redirecting to http. The wordpress site itself is configured to use https, and we see that in the pages that are generated the links are all https links. In the apache config there are no rewrite rules and no redirects. However, any request to a https:// URL is answered with a redirect to the equivalent http URL. And I really would like to know where these redirects are coming from, what is generating these redirects. I've increased the loglevel on the webserver to DEBUG, but did not get any info there. I tried to enable debug logging in wordpress per the recipy I found here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Debugging_in_WordPress But did not get a debug.log file in the directory where one should appear. I'm really at a loss here, and need to fix this urgently. Any hints as where to start looking? Apache is 2.2.14 on Ubuntu. There are several other virtual hosts on this server, using php and https without any problem... Edit: I created a small info.php script and dropped that in the webservers' root. Calling this yields the output of the script, no redirect is generated. This suggest that it's not the webserver, but wordpress that is doing it. A second thing I noticed is that the redirect comes with several cookies, one of which has "httponly" set. Could that be it?

WordPress front page (homepage) fails to redirect when static front page is set.

I have configured WordPress to display a static front page as described here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Settings_Reading_SubPanel#Reading_Settings When save changes and try to visit my front page, my browser displays the following error: "The page isn't redirecting properly. Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete." Disabling cookies does not remedy the situation. I'm using the theme, Constructor (http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/constructor), which I suspect may be contributing to the problem. How can I make WordPress properly display my front page?

Manage widgets from page edit screen

Hi there. I'm looking to find a way to integrate the widget control area into the page edit screen. For the site I'm making it would be perfect with the same drag and drop functionality. I want a list of the available widgets that I can drag and drop into the page widget area. The widgets will then only be shown on that particular page. I've looked through the wp-admin/widgets.php file and tried to use some code from there. I even tried just including widgets.php at the end of the post.php (which is basically what I want, but of course gave me funny results). Please don't suggest plug-ins like Widget Context or Widget Logic. Those are my fallback if I cant do this :) So I would like ideas and/or input on how to accomplish this. Preferably I'd like to do it in the functions.php file, or in a plug-in.

I manage a website. In order to lead the visitor to the latest post when entering the website, I set a 302 redirect from the homepage URL to the latest post URL. There's 1 to 2 posts a month so the redirection is made manually each time a new post gets published. Despite the website registration on google it doesn't get indexed at all. After searching for some solution on blogs and forums I understood this issue might be related to the 302 redirection. It's the first time I use redirections on a website, can someone help me?

Wordpress Multisite Network installation and dev questions

Please go easy on me. I'm a clutzy dinosaur. I currently have a large, unwieldy website hand-coded in html/css with php includes. It currently has a single WP installation in a subdirectory. The plan is to reorganize, and I want to use WP as the CMS and incorporate 3 WP blogs for 3 subdomains. Ideally, would like to create a WP multisite network to allow for further expansion and to save admin trouble. I just want to confirm that if I install WP in the root directory and create 3 blogs (in subdomains), does this mean my website's home page is the mother blog's index.php? Essentially, I will have created 4 blogs - mother at root and 3 children in subdomains? How to set this up on my Mac (OSX 10.5.8) running MAMP for development? And then how to migrate to server without breaking?

Debugging matchit plugin in vim (under Cygwin)

The "matchit" plugin for vim is supposed to allow you to use the % key to jump between matching start/end tags when editing HTML, as well as /* and */ comment delimiters when editing other kinds of code. I've followed the exact instructions in ":help matchit", but % still doesn't work for me. It seems silly to ask "Why doesn't this work?" so instead I'm asking How can I diagnose the problem? Pointers to references are welcome, but specific vim-plugin-debugging techniques are preferred. Wordpress: how to call a plugin function with an ajax call?

I'm writing a Wordpress MU plugin, it includes a link with each post and I want to use ajax to call one of the plugin functions when the user clicks on this link, and then dynamically update the link-text with output from that function. I'm stuck with the ajax query. I've got this complicated, clearly hack-ish, way to do it, but it is not quite working. What is the 'correct' or 'wordpress' way to include ajax functionality in a plugin? (My current hack code is below. When I click the generate link I don't get the same output I get in the wp page as when I go directly to sample-ajax.php in my browser.) Wordpress redirects to itself endlessly

I've just upgraded to last version (2.9.1) from kinda late version (2.2.1). After the upgrade I've realized that you cannot access wordpress from my .com domain, however it is possible via other subdomain! db-he.110mb.com works fine while http://www.db-he.com doesn't. That both redirect to the same server, and configurations are fine. However you cannot surf index.php (which is wordpress'). www.db-he.com/index.php is doing a permanent redirect to www.db-he.com/index.php for some reason. Problem is with wordpress only. All other files works fine. For example, changes.txt can be accessed from both links: www.db-he.com/changes.txt db-he.110mb.com/changes.txt For some reason, it seems more a server problem than a wordpress problem. What can I do?

Add separate domain name to Wordpress admin area with htaccess

I have a Wordpress installation in a seperate folder on my server (meaning it is not in the root folder). I have a htaccess rewrite rule that maps Domain A to folder A. Inside folder A is the Wordpress admin folder, let's call it folder A.B. I tried mapping Domain B to folder A.B., but I can't get it to work properly. When you log in to Wordpress via /admin, you get redirected to /wp-login.php (so from folder A.B. to folder A), maybe that is where I get into trouble. So what I would like to do is this: Domain A folder A Domain B folder A.B Note that this is not for security purposes, I just like the idea of www.domainb.com instead of www.domaina.com/wp-admin. Can this be done with Wordpress?

Scalable WordPress Host for High-Volume Site?

I need recommendations for a scalable web host for a high volume WordPress web site. For my purposes, high-volume might be 100K-500K visitors/hour. Might think towards a 1M/hour burst rate as a "high water mark." I know WP isn't the highest-performing platform out there (ha!), but it's non-negotiable. I can do "the usual optimizations" (e.g. put static files in a CDN, run and follow the advice of performance analyzers like YSlow, etc). But it will still be WordPress, and there will be a dozen or so plugins involved. So, where to host the site? Most "what's the best WordPress host?" discussions seem to focus on lowest-cost. I need the opposite. What are the high-volume, scalable, or clustered WordPress hosts with which you've had great experiences?
