• Not able to set up Gwibber Online accounts

  I first tried Ubuntu 12.10 from the Live USB and then eith Virtual Box. In both cases I was able to connect to my google Account from Gwibber. But now I have done a clean install, but am not able to connect at all. I get a rotating circle, which just keeps on going. I am using a proxy server whose details I have given in the Network Proxy settings. I have also set up the http_proxy, https_proxy and ftp_proxy variables.

• Unable to access internet from devices connected over wifi hotspot with ubuntu 13.04

  I am using ubuntu 13.04 and till couple of days back I was able to connect to internet using the hotspot connection I had created previously when I started using ubuntu 10... But two days back I noticed that devices are getting connected to wifi but are not able to access internet.. I deleted my old wifi hotspot and created a new one by going to network settings and there by clicking create a hotspot option.. I logged in from my wife's laptop which is running on windows 7. It was able to establish connection but was not able to access the internet.. Same is happening with my iPhone too I am able to connect to hotspot but for some reason it is not able to access internet... Any help would be highly appreciated.. Thanks Jacob

• Set default pulseaudio volume

  When I reboot, the volume on the PulseAudio sinks is set to 100%. I know how to change the volume using pactl set-sink-volume, but that is only set temporarily. I could write a script that is run at startup, but it will not be applied if I connect a sink later. (i.e. a Bluetooth speaker) Is there a config file where I can set the default volume that is given to a device when it is first loaded by PulseAudio? Or even the master volume at startup? Clarification: The application is for a headless linux box, so the system shouldn't have to be rebooted and should be able to accept new devices without having to connect via ssh to adjust volumes, etc.

• Updating a database connection password using a script

  An interesting customer requirement that I thought was worthy of sharing today. Thanks to James for the requirement and Bryan for the proposed solution and me for testing the solution and proving it works :0) A customers implementation of Sarbanes Oxley requires them to change all database account passwords every 90 days. This is scripted leveraging shell scripts today for most of their environments. But how can they manage the BI Publisher connections? Now, the customer is running 11g and therefore using weblogic on the middle tier, which is the first clue to Bryans proposed solution. To paraphrase and embellish Bryan's solution a little; why not use a JNDI connection from BIP to the database. Then employ the web logic scripting engine to make updates to the JNDI as needed? BIP is completely uninvolved and with a little 'timing' users will be completely unaware of the password updates i.e. change the password when reports are not being executed. Perfect! James immediately tracked down the WLST script that could be used here, http://middlewaremagic.com/weblogic/?p=4261 (thanks Ravish) Now it was just a case of testing the theory. Some steps: Create the JNDI connection in WLS Create the JNDI connection in BI Publisher pointing to the WLS connection Build new data models using or re-point data sources to use the JNDI connection. Create the WLST script to update the WLS JNDI password as needed. Test! Some details. Creating the JNDI connection in web logic is pretty straightforward. Log into hte console and look for Data Sources under the Services section of the home page and click it Click New >> Generic Datasource Give the connection a name. For the JNDI name, prefix it with 'jdbc/' so I have 'jdbc/localdb' - this name is important you'll need it on the BIP side. Select your db type - this will influence the drivers and information needed on the next page. Being a company man, Im using an Oracle db. Click Next Select the driver of choice, theres lots I know, you can read about them I just chose 'Oracle's Driver (Thin) for Instance connections; Versions 9.0.1 and later' Click Next >> Next Fill out the db name (SID), server, port, username to connect and password >> Next Test the config to ensure you can connect. >> Next Now you need to deploy the connection to your BI server, select it and click Next. You're done with the JNDI config. Creating the JNDI connection on the Publisher side is covered here. Just remember to the connection name you created in WLS e.g. 'jdbc/localdb' Not gonna tell you how to do this, go read the user guide :0) Suffice to say, it works. This requires a little reading around the subject to understand the scripting engine and how to execute scripts. Nicely covered here. However a bit of googlin' and I found an even easier way of running the script. ${ServerHome}/common/bin/wlst.sh updatepwd.py Where updatepwd.py is my script file, it can be in another directory. As part of the wlst.sh script your environment is set up for you so its very simple to execute. The nitty gritty: Need to take Ravish's script above and create a file with a .py extension. Its going to need some modification, as he explains on the web page, to make it work in your environment. I played around with it for a while but kept running into errors. The script as is, tries to loop through all of your connections and modify the user and passwords for each. Not quite what we are looking for. Remember our requirement is to just update the password for a given connection. I also found another issue with the script. WLS 10.x does not allow updates to passwords using clear type ie un-encrypted text while the server is in production mode. Its a bit much to set it back to developer mode bounce it, change the passwords and then bounce and then change back to production and bounce again. After lots of messing about I finally came up with the following: ############################################################################# # # Update password for JNDI connections # ############################################################################# print("*** Trying to Connect.... *****") connect('weblogic','welcome1','t3://localhost:7001') print("*** Connected *****") edit() startEdit() print ("*** Encrypt the password ***") en = encrypt('hr') print "Encrypted pwd: ", en print ("*** Changing pwd for LocalDB ***") dsName = 'LocalDB' print 'Changing Password for DataSource ', dsName cd('/JDBCSystemResources/'+dsName+'/JDBCResource/'+dsName+'/JDBCDriverParams/'+dsName) set('PasswordEncrypted',en) save() activate() Its pretty simple and you can expand on it to loop through the data sources and change each as needed. I have hardcoded the password into the file but you can pass it as a parameter as needed using the properties file method. Im not going to get into the detail of that here but its covered with an example here. Couple of points to note: 1. The change to the password requires a server bounce to get the changes picked up. You can add that to the shell script you will use to call the script above. 2. The script above needs to be run from the MW_HOME\user_projects\domains\bifoundation_domain directory to get the encryption libraries set correctly. My command to run the whole script was: d:\oracle\bi_mw\wlserver_10.3\common\bin\wlst.cmd updatepwd.py - where wlst.cmd is the scripting command line and updatepwd.py was my update password script above. I have not quite spoon fed everything you need to make it a robust script but at least you know you can do it and you can work out the rest I think :0)

  I have an external hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme. I keep my photo and music files on it and can access them from both a Mac PowerPC and a Windows XP machine. For some reason I can find, much less connect to, it on my Ubuntu 10.10 machine. I can see my router in the "network" folder but can't seem to find and connect to the shared drive. Any help would greatly appreciated. I am somewhat of a novice with Ubuntu and networking. Thnaks, Nathaniel

• Can not resolve hostnames on Xubuntu computers

  I have a network of computers which has been running for many years. I have changed two of those to Xubuntu 11.10 and found I can no longer connect by ssh using the host-name from any other machine. I can connect and ping by IP although ping is very slow in one case (~200ms). All other machines are fine including another with Ubuntu 11.10. Host-name resolution works from Xubuntu machines to other networked machines. I am using wins resolution and have checked settings in /etc/nsswitch.conf are the same as my working Ubuntu systems. What is different in Xubuntu networking that I might have missed?

• Squid: caching *.swf with variables

  I'd recently upgraded my Ubuntu 11.10 x64 server to 12.04. In this process Squid was updated from 2.7 to 3.1. Squid 3.1 has many different options witch broke my setup. So I completely removed squid 2.7 and 3.1 and started from scratch. Everything is now working as before except for 1 thing: caching of .swf files with ?/variables. Squid 3 sees a ? as dynamic content and does not cache it. • Switching between ethernet interfaces on Ubuntu 10.04 SERVER

  I have ubuntu 10.04 "SERVER" installed on a system with two ehternet ports. I use only one at a time. I wanted to know if I can switch between ports without using ifup and ifdown every time. That means when I connect my Lan cable on eth0 it should work and it does. But when I disconnect the lan cable and connect it on eth1 I have to ifdown eth0 and only then it works. In my /etc/network/interfaces file I have configured both eth0 and eth1. there is no problem other than I have to switch it manually with ifdown and ifup everytime. Please guide. Thanks in advance

If possible you should try to fix it. If you can't, the easiest work around is to set "talk.google.com" in the "Server" field of the advanced section of the account. So i think this might fix my problem, or maybe just an option to shift the port it connects to. and is there anyone that knows how to use join any IRC channels with Empathy? i have installed the plugin, but i don't know how to join a channel.

• Ati Radeon HD 5850 + two screens with different resolutions

  How can I use these screens like I would use in Windows? When I turn off "copy" it gives me an error. I have tried community drivers and AMD drivers but both fail at this task. I use Ubuntu 12.04 with latest updates. It did not work in Ubuntu 11.10 either. I use DVI to connect my PC to my monitor and HDMi to my TV. It is a Sony Bravia, bought in 2008. I can't remember the model. Also, this same problem occurs when I connect to two Full HD monitors, both DVI. I cannot turn of the cloning of screens. How do I turn it off? Windows can do that.

• Vodafone mobile broadband dongle doesn't work

  I'm running kubuntu 10.10 and have vodafone mobile broadband dongle. When I plug it in, I can see a 'new cellular connection' , but when I try to connect it shows 'preparing to connect' but never does. I went to 'manage connections' and addded my details, like APN,PIN and PUK. but it still ain't working.. I also tried unchecking MSCHAPv2 and MSCHAP in my PPP settings, but nothing seems to work. what do i do? I'm new to linux.

There are quite a few updates in here and I highly recommend any Oracle VM 3 customer or user to install this update. This patch can be installed on top of Oracle VM 3.0 versions 3.0.2 and 3.0.3. The patch is cumulative for 3.0.3. So if you already installed patch update 1 (3.0.3-150) then this will just be incremental on top of that and brings you to 3.0.3-build 227. There is a readme file which contains the patchlist in the patch info. (In my case, two mobile broadband connections ppp0 x2 ) Each connection has a unique & static public IP address. What I need is to control A computer's cursor, using B computer's mouse, over the Internet. In both computers, I have allowed other users to control my computer in Desktop Sharing preferences, as below: When I try to connect to A from the B using Remmina Remote Desktop Client, it refuses to connect after trying for a while. These are my settings: I expect this to be done from an available open source software, not from TeamViewer. I found this guide harder to understand. Please provide me clear instructions...   First of all i am a newbie to Ubuntu Linux and have been trying to install and compile FFMPEG on an Ubuntu machine... • Northwind now available on SQL Azure

  Two weeks ago I made available a copy of [AdventureWorks2012] on SQL Azure and published credentials so that anyone from the SQL community could connect up and experience SQL Azure, probably for the first time. One of the (somewhat) popular requests thereafter was to make the venerable Northwind database available too so I am pleased to say that as of right now, Northwind is up there too. You will notice immediately that all of the Northwind tables (and the stored procedures and views too) have been moved into a schema called [Northwind] – this was so that they could be easily differentiated from the existing [AdventureWorks2012] objects. I used an SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) project to publish the schema and data up to this SQL Azure database; if you are at all interested in poking around that SSDT project then I have made it available on Codeplex for your convenience under the MS-PL license – go and get it from https://northwindssdt.codeplex.com/. Using SSDT proved particularly useful as it alerted me to some aspects of Northwind that were not compatible with SQL Azure, namely that five of the tables did not have clustered indexes: The beauty of using SSDT is that I am alerted to these issues before I even attempt a connection to SQL Azure. Pretty cool, no? Fixing this situation was of course very easy, I simply changed the following primary keys from being nonclustered to clustered: [PK_Region] [PK_CustomerDemographics] [PK_EmployeeTerritories] [PK_Territories] [PK_CustomerCustomerDemo]   If you want to connect up then here are the credentials that you will need: Server mhknbn2kdz.database.windows.net Database AdventureWorks2012 User sqlfamily Password sqlf@m1ly You will need SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) 2008R2 installed in order to connect or alternatively simply use this handy website: https://mhknbn2kdz.database.windows.net which provides a web interface to a SQL Azure server. Do remember that hosting this database is not free so if you find that you are making use of it please help to keep it available by visiting Paypal and donating any amount at all to [email protected]. To make this easy you can simply hit this link and the details will be completed for you – all you have to do is login and hit the “Send” button.   In the same way gmail can generate ads based on email content, I am looking for a way to develop a system which can: Allow users to connect their email address to our site It then would continously monitor all incomming emails From the incomming emails there would be a critera(e.g. a certain address or subject) if any of the emails matched the critea it would would be saved to a database Then once a new email had been found the users would receive an email notification will tells them to log back into the site to see it. My questions are: Would this be possible? What would be a good language to use(generally I like php, python and java) Are there any frameworks which would help do this? How would I connect the users email account to allow access to their emails(do I need a mail server?) Any advice? Thank you! If you need more information please let me know.

  The system works and its called Microsoft Connect , who would of thought it :) Following on from my previous blog post MicroSoft – Follow best practices, on the connect item , the followup stated that changes had been made in 2008.  I genuinely thought that a change would take an age to trickle through to the customer. But after firing up 2008R2 RTM and examining the SqlAgent traffic with profiler , where before i would see non-parameterized sql, I now see RPC calls.    Excellent , i get my cache back.

• How can I stop Ubuntu from automatically unmounting Samba shares?

  I have some music files I'd like to listen to sitting on a Samba share. I added this share via the Ubuntu GUI (Places - Connect to server...), and everything worked just fine. However, despite the fact that my music file is playing from this location, after I've not touched the location using the Nautilus GUI, Ubuntu/GNOME decides that I'm not using the share anymore and terminates the connection. Thus, my music stops playing and Rhythmbox is unhappy with me. Simply clicking on the new shortcut the "Connect to server..." bit created for me immediately makes the files come back again and allows me to restart the music playing. How can I have Ubuntu not automatically dismount samba shares?

• Direct X-forwarding

  I'm struggling to set up X-forwarding between 2 different machines on my local network and my ubuntu desktop. I'm able to connect using ssh x-forwarding one one machine, but the other machine (a Qnap TS-219P II) seems to have a less functional build of SSH on it, and I'd rather use a simpler approach. I've set $DISPLAY, and done 'xauth list $DISPLAY' on the desktop, then 'xauth add ' on the remote machine. From the remote machine, I just get xterm xterm Xt error: Can't open display: 192.168.0.4:0.0 Now, oddly, if I connect via ssh -X, there is a different magic cookie for the tunnelled port (but neither seems to work). I'm wondering if there is a port which needs to be enabled to permit X connections from the LAN? If so, how? The proper solution might be to re-build all the packages which are preventing X-forwarding from working on my QNAP machine, but lets assume for the purposes of this question that I've tried building enough packages on that architecture already and want to run X without the overhead of encryption.

• Quick run through of the WP7 Developer Tools January 2011

  In case you haven’t heard the latest WP7 Developers Tool update was released yesterday and contains a few goodies. First you need to go and grab the bits here. You can install them in any order, but I installed the WindowsPhoneDeveloperResources_en-US_Patch1.msp first. Then the VS10-KB2486994-x86.exe. They install silently. In other words, you would need to check Programs and Features and look in Installed Updates to see if they installed successfully. Like the screenshot below: Once you get them installed you can try out a few new features. Like Copy and Paste. Just fire up your application and put a TextBox on it and Select the Text and you will have the option highlighted in red above the text. Once you select it you will have the option to paste it. (see red rectangle below). Another feature is the Windows Phone Capability Detection Tool – This tool detects the phone capabilities used by your application. This will prevent you from submitting an app to the marketplace that says it uses x feature but really does not. How do you use it? • Remote connection problem.

  Hello I have ubuntu 10.04 installed with mysql on it and I have a problem with remote connection. When I connect through putty it works but sometimes it looks like it hangs for example when I execute the command ln --help. Also with MySQL connection When I execute a simple query like show processlist; it works, but for example select * from table not always, if the table doesn't have many rows it works but if it has let's say more than 20 the query looks like it keeps working and never ends. It's connected but I can't do many things remotely. Added: I connect using putty from other windows pc, server is not overloaded. when i work at the same time directly on ubuntu i can do everything. Remotely not.

• Exchange with Evolution or any other mail client

  I see other questions about this, no answers and no one with a completely similar question. I work for a place with an Exchange 2007 server. There is an http://owa.ourserver.com that is accessible from anywhere. I've tried every combo I can think of for Evolution - Microsoft Exchange, including the MAPI plugin, but then I read that, that doesn't work on OWA Exchange email servers and I can't get it to connect at all that way. If there is no way to connect via Evolution, is there another mail client? I tried Thunderbird, but I couldn't get it to work with Exchange either...

• Remote Workers...We're Not That Bad!

  I work from home a lot – my team is located in different cities and countries, my manager is in a different city, and most of our work is done via conference calls, email and collaboration through Oracle Social Network. We’ve figured out how to be effective and involve team members, regardless of where we are all located. When I mention that I work from home, a lot of my friends will laugh, roll their eyes or use their fingers to make quotation marks around “work from home.” Their belief is that I’m sitting at home, eating bon-bons and watching television. The attempts at humor only multiply when they know that my husband also mostly works from home. So, it was with great joy that I read the Lifehacker article Why Remote Workers Are More (Yes, More) Engaged. I’m not going to re-write the article for you, but four highlights from the article include: Proximity breeds complacency –because communicating with employees sitting next to you is so easy, you may not do it well. Absence makes people try harder to connect – because you have to make an effort to connect to your team, you tend to pay better attention when you do connect Leaders of virtual team make better use of tools – when working remotely, you will use technology (many different forms of it) to connect with your team. This daily use of the tools makes you more proficient with those tools Leaders of far-flung teams maximize the time spent together – getting together takes effort, time and money, so leaders tend to filter out distractions when teams do get together. These points made me happy because I’ve seen the same things play out in my team located around the world. And I’m not saying that a virtual team is more effective than a co-located team – but my virtual team doesn’t have the option of filing into a conference room for a face-to-face meeting whenever we want. Instead, we have to figure out how to work effectively without meeting face-to-face. Am I more engaged as a remote worker? I’d like to think that I am. I’ve been on calls with colleagues at 3am – this would never happen if my only option was to be in the office. I can leave my “office” to pick up my kids from school…and I’m willingly back online after kids are in bed to finish up anything I need to. Oracle Social Network lets me use my iPad to engage with my teammates when I’m waiting at music lessons, the doctor’s office or any place else with a network connection. I feel like I’m more connected with my team, and I feel like I’m more connected with my family life. So yes, I am a remote worker, and I am engaged. If you lead a virtual team, I challenge you to increase the ways that you communicate to effectively engage your team. If you are on a virtual team, I challenge you to think about how you might interact with team members to keep both them and yourself engaged in your work.
