This past week Jazoon in Zurich had Java EE, GlassFish, JAX-RS, Servlet, JSF all covered while JAX in California also had a good number of Java EE-related talks (see this Java EE 7 article). Where people were looking for a specific command or set of steps to fix a problem they had encountered. So we thought it would be a good idea to create a series of small posts that deal with these "How do I" question directly. We will use a simple example each time, that shows exactly what commands and procedures should be used to address a given problem.   Let's say you (or your company) have an amount of money that you would like to invest in improving your career, and probably make more money in the long run by landing a better job or raising your productivity. There are some classical investments that anyone would suggest: spend on programming books, since they pay for themselves very quickly; buy a better chair, since you will stay on that all day; attend conferences to improve your network of contacts. I'm looking for more examples to weigh my options in the quest for improvement. Google does not help as it only shows job ads for programmers in the financial sector.

  It occurred to me today that it might be useful to make a list of all the ways to earn money through either actual programming or just programming knowledge. I imagine it's probably a finite list as long as you stick to a reasonable level of granularity. Here's what I have so far: Trading your time for money (i.e. having a job or being a freelancer) Building your own software product (a full-fledged startup or a tiny mobile app or whatever) Giving talks at conferences and meetups Teaching students in a classroom Writing a book or blog (these are products, but non-software products) I've probably missed at least a few. What else is there? (I'm not sure whether this is an appropriate question, by the way. I think I would select the best answer based on how practical/original/interesting/numerous your suggestions are.)

• Reactive Extensions vs FileSystemWatcher

  One of the things that has long bugged me about the FileSystemWatcher is the way it fires multiple events for a single logical change to a file. I know why it happens, but I don't want to have to care - I just want to reparse the file once, not 4-6 times in a row. Ideally, there would be an event that only fires when a given file is done changing, rather than every step along the way. Over the years I've come up with various solutions to this problem, of varying degrees of ugliness. I thought Reactive Extensions would be the ultimate solution, but there's something I'm not doing right, and I'm hoping someone can point out my mistake. I have an extension method: public static IObservable<IEvent<FileSystemEventArgs>> GetChanged(this FileSystemWatcher that) { return Observable.FromEvent<FileSystemEventArgs>(that, "Changed"); } Ultimately, I would like to get one event per filename, within a given time period - so that four events in a row with a single filename are reduced to one event, but I don't lose anything if multiple files are modified at the same time. BufferWithTime sounds like the ideal solution. var bufferedChange = watcher.GetChanged() .Select(e => e.EventArgs.FullPath) .BufferWithTime(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(1)) .Where(e => e.Count > 0) .Select(e => e.Distinct()); When I subscribe to this observable, a single change to a monitored file triggers my subscription method four times in a row, which rather defeats the purpose. If I remove the Distinct() call, I see that each of the four calls contains two identical events - so there is some buffering going on. Increasing the TimeSpan passed to BufferWithTime seems to have no effect - I went as high as 20 seconds without any change in behavior. This is my first foray into Rx, so I'm probably missing something obvious. Am I doing it wrong? Is there a better approach? Thanks for any suggestions...

  Are there any Event Driven Architecture jQuery plugins? Step 1: Subscribing The subscribers subscribe to the event handler in the middle, and pass in a callback method, as well as the name of the event they are listening for... i.e. The two green subscribers will be listening for p0 events. And the blue subscriber will be listening for p1 events. Step 2: The p0 event is fired by another component to the Event Handler A p0 event is fired to the Event Handler The event handler notifies it's subscribers of the event, calling the callback methods they specified when they subscribed in Step 1: Subscribing. Note that the blue subscriber is not notified because it was not listening for p0 events. Step 3: The p1 event is fired a component to the Event Handler The p1 event is fired by another component Just as before except that now the blue subscriber receives the event through its callback and the other two green subscribers do not receive the event. Because it isn't just a basic publisher/subscriber, it has to be called something else I would think.

• XtraGrid Suite - is there a way to add a button or hyperlink to a cell?

  I'm working with the XtraGrid Suite made by DevExpress. I can't find any sort of functionality to do this, but I'm curious if you can add a button or hyperlink to a grid cell. Context: I've got an Events list. Each Event has a Time, Start/End, and a Category (Utility and Maintenance). There can be Start events and Stop events. Having done my analysis of the problem, I've decided that having a StartTime and EndTime for each event would not work. So if an event starts, I'd record the current time to the Event object, and set it as a 'Start' event. I'd like to add a "Stop" button/hyperlink to a cell in that row. If the user wishes to log an Ends event, the event type, etc would be copied to a new Event with the type 'Stop' and the button would disappear. I hope this makes sense. EDIT: Aaronaught's answer is actually better than what I was originally asking (a button) so I've updated the question. That way, anyone looking for putting a hyperlink in a cell can benefit from his example : )

• Html Select List: why would onchange be called twice?

  I have a page with a select list (ASP.NET MVC Page) The select list and onchange event specified like this: <%=Html.DropDownList("CompanyID", Model.CompanySelectList, "(select company)", new { @class = "data-entry-field", @onchange = "companySelectListChanged()" })%> The companySelectListChanged function is getting called twice? I am using the nifty code in this question to get the caller. both times the caller is the onchange event, however if i look at the callers caller using: arguments.callee.caller.caller the first call returns some system code as the caller (i presume) and the second call returns undefined. I am checking for undefined to only react once to onchange, but this doesnt seem ideal, whcy would onchange be called twice? UPDATE: ok, found the culprit! ...apart from me :-) but the issue of calling the companySelectListChanged function twice still stands. The onchange event is set directly on the select as mentioned. This calls the companySelectListChanged function. ..notice the 'data-entry-field' class, now in a separate linked javascript file a change event on all fields with this class is bound to a function that changes the colour of the save button. This means there is two events on the onchange, but the companySelectListChanged is called twice? The additional binding is set as follows: $('.data-entry-field').bind('keypress keyup change', function (e) { highLightSaveButtons(); }); Assuming its possible to have 2 change events on the select list, its would assume that setting keypress & keyup events may be breaking something? Any ideas?

• Populating array of input fields as alternate fields using jQuery UI datepicker

  I am using jquery ui datepicker in order to populate start and end dates for multiple events on the same page, the number of events is dynamic and I need to post day, month and year as separate fields, so I have something like this: <input type="text" name="event[0].startDate" class="date"/> <input type="hidden" name="event[0].startDate_day" class="startDate_day" /> <input type="hidden" name="event[0].startDate_month" class="startDate_month" /> <input type="hidden" name="event[0].startDate_year" class="startDate_year" /> <input type="text" name="event[0].endDate" class="date"/> <input type="hidden" name="event[0].endDate_day" class="endDate_day" /> <input type="hidden" name="event[0].endDate_month" class="endDate_month" /> <input type="hidden" name="event[0].endDate_year" class="startDate_year" /> event[1]... event[2]... • Do you have ideas for a workaround for this Known bug in Visual Studio 2010's addIn model ?

  When developing AddIns for Visual Studio 2010 the following line fails: CommandBarEvents handler = (EnvDTE.CommandBarEvents)m_VSStudio.DTE.Events.get_CommandBarEvents(popup); Update: Forgot to tell that m_VSStudio is of the type DTE2 Where popup is of the type CommandBarPopup (for the type CommandBarControl it works though) The line fails with this Exception: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80020003): Member not found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80020003 (DISP_E_MEMBERNOTFOUND)) The exact same line worked in Visual Studio 2008. The purpose of the line is to get a handler which handles clickevents, when one clicks the Popup. After som searching I found this link: http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/524335/events-get-commandbarevents-exception-on-submenus-reproducible-bug-addin Which basicly states that it is a known bug, which will not be fixed, because there is a workaround. But unfortunately it does not state the workaround :( I would be extremely pleased if anybody has a great idea for a workaround ? The reason why I want to listen to the click events is because I want to show or hide the submenuitems (CommandBarControl) given some condition, when one clicks a menu (CommandBarPopup). So a workaround that uses something else than the click event would also be appreciated.

• can't get jquery livequery to with an update panel

  I have some basic html inside an asp.net update panel. Using livequery, I set up autocomplete, blur and keydown events so that they all continue to be wired up after the update panel does a partial page load. When the page initially loads, all the events work fine but after the update panel does a partial page reload, none of the events wired up with livequery continue to work. Are there known issues with livequery and update panels?
