  • Creating an appropriate index for a frequently used query in SQL Server

    - by Slauma
In my application I have two queries which will be quite frequently used. The Where clauses of these queries are the following: WHERE FieldA = @P1 AND (FieldB = @P2 OR FieldC = @P2) and WHERE FieldA = @P1 AND FieldB = @P2 P1 and P2 are parameters entered in the UI or coming from external datasources. FieldA is an int and highly on-unique, means: only two, three, four different values in a table with say 20000 rows FieldB is a varchar(20) and is "almost" unique, there will be only very few rows where FieldB might have the same value FieldC is a varchar(15) and also highly distinct, but not as much as FieldB FieldA and FieldB together are unique (but do not form my primary key, which is a simple auto-incrementing identity column with a clustered index) I'm wondering now what's the best way to define an index to speed up specifically these two queries. Shall I define one index with... FieldB (or better FieldC here?) FieldC (or better FieldB here?) FieldA ... or better two indices: FieldB FieldA and FieldC FieldA Or are there even other and better options? What's the best way and why? Thank you for suggestions in advance!

  • Storing SQL queries in Table in sql server

    - by Rohit
We have multiple jobs in our system. These jobs are listed in a grid. We have 3 different user types (usertypeid 1,2,3). For each user listing is different and he can filter listing by selecting view from a dropdown. ViewName in the below table is the view which needs to be displayed. To achieve this functionality, a fellow developer has created the following table structure and stored sql fragments in SQLExpression in the below table. According to me the query should not be stored in database. What are the pros and cons of this approach and what are the available alternatives? JobListingViewID ViewName SQLExpression UserTypeID 3 All Jobs 1 = 1 3 4 Error Jobs JobStatusID IN ( 2 ) 1 5 Error Jobs JobStatusID IN ( 2 ) 2 6 Error Jobs JobStatusID IN ( 2 ) 3 7 Speech JobStatusID IN ( 1, 3, 8 ) 1

  • SQL server 2008 trigger not working correct with multiple inserts

    - by Rob
I've got the following trigger; CREATE TRIGGER trFLightAndDestination ON checkin_flight AFTER INSERT,UPDATE AS BEGIN IF NOT EXISTS ( SELECT 1 FROM Flight v INNER JOIN Inserted AS i ON i.flightnumber = v.flightnumber INNER JOIN checkin_destination AS ib ON ib.airport = v.airport INNER JOIN checkin_company AS im ON im.company = v.company WHERE i.desk = ib.desk AND i.desk = im.desk ) BEGIN RAISERROR('This combination of of flight and check-in desk is not possible',16,1) ROLLBACK TRAN END END What i want the trigger to do is to check the tables Flight, checkin_destination and checkin_company when a new record for checkin_flight is added. Every record of checkin_flight contains a flightnumber and desknumber where passengers need to check in for this destination. The tables checkin_destination and checkin_company contain information about companies and destinations restricted to certain checkin desks. When adding a record to checkin_flight i need information from the flight table to get the destination and flightcompany with the inserted flightnumber. This information needs to be checked against the available checkin combinations for flights, destinations and companies. I'm using the trigger as stated above, but when i try to insert a wrong combination the trigger allows it. What am i missing here?

  • Passing multiple parameters of same column to SQL Server select SP

    - by Bill
I have a string value in the web.config — for example 2 guids seperated by a ",". I need to query the database dynamically (i.e i have no idea how many values could be seperated by a comma in the web.config) and run a select statement on the table passing these values and getting all that is relevant for example: select * from tablename where columnname = string1 string2 string3 etc etc some strings may only contain 1 guid some may contain 10

  • Passing dynamic parameters to a stored procedure in SQL Server 2008

    - by themhz
I have this procedure that executes another procedure passed by a parameter and its parameters datefrom and dateto. CREATE procedure [dbo].[execute_proc] @procs varchar(200), @pdatefrom date, @pdateto date as exec @procs @datefrom=@pdatefrom,@dateto=@pdateto But I need to also pass the parameters dynamically without the need to edit them in the procedure. For example, what I am imagining is something like this CREATE procedure [dbo].[execute_proc] @procs varchar(200), @params varchar(max) as exec @procs @params where @params is a string like @param1=1,@param2='somethingelse' Is there a way to do this?

  • SQL Server 2008 - Query takes forever to finish even though work is actually done

    - by Brian
Running the following simple query in SSMS: UPDATE tblEntityAddress SET strPostCode= REPLACE(strPostCode,' ','') The update to the data (at least in memory) is complete in under a minute. I verified this by performing another query with transaction isolation level read uncommitted. The update query, however, continues to run for another 30 minutes. What is the issue here? Is this caused by a delay to write to disk? TIA

The total no. of updates (insert, update, delete statements) are approx 200,000

  • SQL Server: String Manipulation, Unpivoting

I have a column called body, which contains body content for our CMS. The data looks like: ...{cloak:id=1.1.1}...{cloak}...{cloak:id=1.1.2}...{cloak}...{cloak:id=1.1.3}...{cloak}... A moderately tweaked for readability example: ## h5. Forgot to mention: I can't use regex, because CLR isn't enabled on the database. The numbers aren't sequencial. The current record jumps from 1.1.6 to 1.2.1
