• Server 2008 locks me out when not using the machine for 10 minutes after installing SP2

  I have recently installed Service Pack 2 on my Windows Server 2008 machine (which I use actively for development, and i'm always logged on to). Now, after this installation, when I don't use the machine for some time (let's say, 10 minutes), it locks itself so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del and log back in. I have already checked the Screen Saver settings, and it's "None", as it always has been. I also looked into power settings and everything looks right (20 mins to turn off monitor, and i haven't found any settings regarding locking me in there). Do you have any idea what I can do so that it won't lock me out after not using the machine for a while? Thanks! Daniel

• cygWin connect by SSH using RSA key; ssh.exe couldn't create /home/user/.ssh

  I'm using Win XP and I'm trying to connect by SSH to remote host using RSA key. I've investigated that cygWin recognizes Documents and Settings dir as home directory Z:\app\cwRsync\bin>cygpath -H /cygdrive/c/Documents and Settings I've created .ssh directory in Documents and Settings/user/.ssh and moved known_hosts, id_rsa, id_rsa.pub there. Now, I'm trying to connect via ssh.exe to remote host Z:\app\cwRsync\bin>ssh -p 22 [email protected] Could not create directory '/home/user/.ssh'. The authenticity of host '[remotehost.com]:22 ([remotehost.com]:22)' can't be established. RSA key fingerprint is f7:f4:2c:e0:c6:7e:d2:a4:45:70:63:df:bf:f2:84:46. Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? What I'm doing wrong? Why ssh.exe couldn't create directory /home/user/.ssh? Thank you.

• Remove Sync Center icon

  I accidentally marked a shared folder as "Available Offline" in Windows Explorer on Windows 8.1 computer. This seems to have "woken up" the Sync Center and caused the Sync Center icon to be displayed in the system notification area. Even though I've undid that by marking the folder as not available offline, and furthermore have reset CSC and disabled Offline Files, the Sync Center icon still appears in the overflow section of the system notification area. How do I remove the Sync Center icon and preferably disable the process that is displaying it? Debugging info: The registry shows that stuff is enabled, even though the Sync Center and Offline Files dialog don't indicate that anything is active. • free Raw-File Converter/Editor

  I have RAW files output by a program with a specific set of properties (Photoshop RAW, 16 bits, IBM PC byte order, no header, 1 non-interleaved channel, variable sizes like 257X257 or 129X513); does anyone know of a free tool that will allow me to convert to and from this format, and possibly do basic editing (selection, copy/paste, rotation of selection)? I've tried Picasa, XNView, and Paint Shop Pro 7 and none of them work properly. The closest i get is Paint Shop Pro which will at least make a serviceable attempt to open these files but i can't set all of the proper settings. XNView just might be able to edit it if i can figure out how to change the open settings for a particular raw file. So my questions at current are: how do i tell XNView to open a raw file a particular way? Failing that, is there any free tool that can open Photoshop-RAW files with the above settings (that's not photoshop)? If it helps, i'm trying to import/export/edit hieghtmap data for maps for Supreme Commander.

• Installed IE8 & SP3 on XP now I can't HTTPS from any browser.

  The computer is Windows XP Professional SP3 with IE8. On the Tools Options Connections the "Settings" is GRAYED OUT (I am an admin on the machine) Any browsing of https:// addresses results in IE displaying the following: "this program cannot display the web page" After installing an alternate browser and trying the same https:// address I get a similar error message. I have tried using Compatibility View Settings to for all web pages and this has no effect on the problem. HTTP addresses work fine, I can PING sites such as google.com without issue. Question: What could be preventing me from getting at the settings to check to see if I'm using a proxy? What else could be preventing HTTPS access?

• Use System Restore to rescue lost user profile in Win XP?

  Hi! My win XP account profile has recently been "reset". Many app settings are lost. For example, the "recent project" list in VS 2005 is empty. There should be lots of other stuffs that are painfully lost without me knowing! What can I do? Can I retrieve the app settings from System Restore? I don't have much confidence on this util, even tho I think restoring to a point when the profile still works, and back up away the C:\Documents and Settings (is it where all the app setting files are located?), that should work... Is it reliable to restore to a previous restore pt and then goes back to the latest RP? I've googled on System Restore, looks like what the util does is just back up some physical files, and restore them when doing System Restore. That sounds quite safe, but I am still uncomfortable to this. Thx for u guys' help in advance!

  We are using a Meru enterprise wireless network with 180 APs. Recently, many users connections are dropping frequently. After much troubleshooting, we have determined much of the trouble is due to some settings in the advanced properties of the wireless nic on our notebooks. Now we want to send out the changes in a Zenworks bundle, but I cannot find these settings in the registry or anywhere we might be able to send out as a remote package. Does anyone know where to find these settings for an Intel wifilink 5100 card other that the NIC properties itself? We really do not want to manually configure 600 notebooks.

• Printer Properties not sending the correct page size to program

  We have a Zebra 2844 Label Printer with 4"x3" labels in it. When we check the page settings in Windows XP, it is set to the correct size. When we go to print out of any program, it prints 4"x11". I have checked the page settings in one of the programs that we are using and it does show correctly the 4"x3" settings but prints at the incorrect 4"x11". I have followed the steps here Paper size: Printer Properties vs Page Setup and here Is there a way to programatically set the printer properties in windows? but have not been able to glean enough information to figure it out. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it!

• Change google search location beyond current country

  I often work remotely and prefer using en-us locale settings for my searches. One of our computers is located in Germany, and whenever I try to change the location in Google Search Settings, I get an answer to "Pleas enter a valid Deutschland city or zip code". I checked this post, but it doesn't apply, as my language settings en-us and the Google search language is also set to English. It clearly uses the IP address of the computer. I couldn't find an answer in the Google help pages, anyone any idea how to change it London, New-York or Amsterdam?

• Auto-connect Bluetooth headphones in Windows 7 64bit

  I have a pair of bluetooth headphones that I've successfully paired with my Windows 7 64bit machine and audio plays through them without a hitch. On the Device Stage under the properties of the headphones in troubleshooting it shows "last connected" as "currently connected" even if I power cycle the headphones or after a reboot of my computer. So the Windows bluetooth stack has no trouble finding them. The problem I have is that whenever the headphones reconnect to my pc they show up as disconnected in the Sound Settings and no sound is routed to them until I manually connect them. I have to go into Sound Settings, then from the Playback tab right click on the headphones and choose the Connect option. Is there a way to make the Sound Settings connect automatically whenever the headphones are available to Windows?

• Managing service passwords with Puppet

  I'm setting up my Bacula configuration in Puppet. One thing I want to do is ensure that each password field is different. My current thought is to hash the hostname with a secret value that would ensure each file daemon has a unique password and that password can be written to both the director configuration and the file server. I definitely don't want to use one universal password as that would permit anybody who might compromise one machine to get access to any machine through Bacula. Is there another way to do this other than using a hash function to generate the passwords? Clarification: This is NOT about user accounts for services. This is about the authentication tokens (to use another term) in the client / server files. • local .pac-file URL format that works with IE and Safari (Windows)?

  Say I want to use a proxy auto-config file that is stored at C:\proxy.pac. To make Internet Explorer use this configuration I have to specify the pac-file in the LAN settings in the following way: file://C:/proxy.pac But Safari, that uses the same proxy settings, will ignore it in this case. To make Safari use the pac-file I have to reference it as file:///C:/proxy.pac (3 slashes at the beginning) which, according to Wikipedia is the correct format. But this way Internet Explorer will ignore it. Opera and Chrome, that also use the same proxy settings, are fine with both ways but is there another option that will work with Safari and Internet Explorer at the same time?

• Quality wise, is Windows Media Audio 10 Professional equivalent to WMA?

  I noticed that for encoding CD rips, Zune is still using WMA 9.2 instead of WMA 10 Pro. On a given file using the highest quality VBR settings looks like this: VBR Quality 98, 44 kHz, stereo 1-pass VBR On the same file if I use WMA 10 Pro, with the same settings, the resulting file is about 20% smaller. Using my ears, I'm unable to tell the difference, but I'm wondering if this was the goal of WMA 10 Pro (to be as good as WMA at a lower bitrate). Is the quality of a WMA 10 Pro file equal to that of a WMA 9.2 file encoded with the same settings?

• Why are my hardware tabs disabled for my VMWare player image?

  I just installed a Ubuntu 10.10 image on VMWare player and after I finished installing I was messing with the hardware settings and I did the following: 1. disabled the floppy device 2. changed the CDRom to "use system cdrom" 3. tried to enable the VMWare tools but it complained that the vm was in "Easy Install" mode After I fiddled with the VM now my floppy and 2 CD rom devices as well as sound card and USB settings are all disabled in the VM hardware settings. Any idea on why this occurred and how to fix it?

• Dropbox.py on RHEL 6

  I'm trying to run a headless install of Dropbox on RHEL 6. • Hide Win 8.1 "tip" about "Switch between apps"?

  I've just installed Win8.1 and I'm trying to set up IIS. When I open Add remove programs from the start menu I get the pc-settings app. In the pc-settings app I get a "tooltip" or whatever we should call it, that hints me to "Switch between apps" by swiping from the edge. Well fine, but I don't want to do that right now, and I can't get that tip to dissapear. The tip lingers on even into Visual Studio, covering my code. I can't swipe because I don't have a touch screen, and also I'm on a multimonitor system that shows this tip in the middle of the screen. Here's a screenshot for you, where I put the web browser slightly over the left monitor. So, besides rebooting, how am I supposed to kill this very informative tip? EDIT When I kill the app by alt-f4 it dissapears right until I open the settings app again, then it's back. What I'm asking about is how to dismiss items like this in general.

  Installed debian from DVD. And now I see exim4 is running owned by UID 107. There is no user 107 in my /etc/passwd. Same problem on another system (owned by UID 101), so I suspect this is a debian problem...? Running squeeze on both. So under debian, who should own the mail system?   Windows 7 continues the practice of saving user actions in the registry. I'd like to disable this practice both to avoid reg-file fragmentation and SSD wear, as well as being uncomfortable with programs being able to quickly analyze my usage habits. Even with the "Turn off user tracking" policy enabled, there are at least two areas that still contain user tracking: HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\MuiCache This key stores a cache of most-recently accessed strings, including most-recently ran exe descriptions. MKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft Windows\Shell\BagMRU This directory stores the most recently viewed folders along with timestamps. Are there additional policy settings/registry entries to disable these writes? If not, is it possible to make these entries Volatile? Would it be practical to create a temporary hive (eg, on ramdisk) and map it over this location?

• Sharing git repo without SSH

  Hi. I'm trying to set-up a private git repo for code sharing, but found out that most of the implementations out there require use of SSH public keys, for example: http://www.jedi.be/blog/2009/05/06/8-ways-to-share-your-git-repository/ The only approach looking reasonable is the git-daemon, but it does not contain any authentication, and while it might be a good option for LAN, it is no go for remote working. Coming from SVN daemon, where all the access was conveniently controlled via single file, the SSH keys scheme quite a hurdle for me. Is there any way to securely share multiple Git repositories, without using SSH authentication? Thanks in advance!

  hi, I've uploaded my drupal website (and related database) to my new server. The database info is: host: localhost user: user pass: pass databaseName = database_name I've set the following line in settings.php file: $db_url = 'mysqli://user:password@localhost/database_name'; but what I get is this: If you are the maintainer of this site, please check your database settings in the settings.php file and ensure that your hosting provider's database server is running. For more help, see the handbook, or contact your hosting provider. I guess the database is running, it always run and I can access with phpmyadmin so I think the problem is not there. The database and website files upload have also been succesfull.. so I dunno what to do to fix this issue. It is mysql on IIS Server thanks

• Moving to an outside Exchange provider - How to create new Outlook profile on multiple PCs?

  Following an acquisition we are switching from our local Exchange to an outside provider. I need to change account settings / create new profile so that users are able to access their new mailbox, and I hate the idea of doing it manually on every single client. I have tried quick and dirty solution with copying profile information from Registry on one computer to the other, hoping that I could fix user info later. Quite obviously, this didn't work: Outlook recognized the profile, I could select it at the application startup, but there the fun ends - the profile was corrupt. I couldn't change settings in Mail settings on Control panel, either. Didn't find any Group policy solution. Is there any application, script or other solution, that would help me save time commuting from one PC to the other and typing the same info over and over again?

  I need to start up mysqld with command line options as from here: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/server-options.html#option_mysqld_skip-grant-tables I normally do sudo service mysqld start, but passing the option as sudo service mysqld start --skip-grant-tables does not seem to work.
