• Fastest booting Linux ditribution on a live-cd

  I'm looking for a linux distro with the following: Boots quickly, as fast as possible. Has expected tools such as file browser, a web browser, etc. Doesn't need to have extraneous recovery stuff such as partition editors, and what not. These are the tools I have and use already: ophcrack Ultimate Boot CD for Windows (UBCD4Win) chntpw (Offline NT Password and Registry Editor) Hiren's BootCD gparted or Parted Magic Ubuntu nubuntu Any and all suggestions are welcome :-) The primary objective is to get a quick booting linux distro that I can grab / delete / move / copy files with. Currently, I prefer using ophcrack, it boots in (relatively) fast and I can manipulate files well. The one that takes the longest is ubuntu of course.

  Recently a virus attacked my pc and cleared 5% of my hard disk which has one partition I viewed the disk in a hex viewer program like active undelete ,cleared the virus data and overwrote it with 1s I want to recover a large file that is about 10gb, but no recovery tools seem to be able to recover any files. I want to know ,in theory, is this file recoverable ? I think that files are fragmented, researched about NTFS File System and i understand cluster information are just saved in MFT File ? Is there any way to recover file without a MFT structure ?

• How can I delete Time Machine files using the commandline

  I want to delete some files/directories from my Time Machine Partition using rm, but am unable to do so. I'm pretty sure the problem is related to some sort of access control extended attributes on files in the backup, but do not know how to override/disable them in order to get rm to work. An example of the error I'm getting is: % sudo rm -rf Backups.backupdb/MacBook/Latest/MacBook/somedir rm: Backups.backupdb/MacBook/Latest/MacBook/somedir: Directory not empty rm: Backups.backupdb/MacBook/Latest/MacBook/somedir/somefile: Operation not permitted There are a number of reasons I do not want to use either the Time Machine GUI or Finder for this. If possible, I'd like to be able to maintain the extended protection for all other files (I'd like not to disable them globally, unless I can re-enable once I've done my work).

• Bootcamp: setup of Windows 7 (64 bit) hanging at "disk.sys"

  I am having trouble getting Windows 7 Professional (64bit) to install on a Macbook Pro (late 2010 model). The installer hangs when loading the setup from disk. When restarting, I get an option to boot Windows from disk. The installer then starts loading files from disk and suddenly hangs. Using "Safe Mode" (from the advanced menu), it tells me that the installer hangs when loading "disk.sys". The installation is made on a fresh Bootcamp partition, the disk uses GPT. Has anyone seen this before and maybe found a solution?

• Can software operation damage an SD card?

  My SD card has a broken boot sector and the tools I've tried say that it's not repairable (I've tried TestDisk, DriveRestore Pro and Easeus Partition Recovery). The card was in my Android phone and at one point, it simply shut down and I had to reboot it. After I rebooted it, the SD card was not recognized and since then I've tried to recover it (I don't want to format the card as it contains some data I'd like not to lose although it's nothing critical). My question is, can some software error in Android, or a sudden crash of a system, damage the SD card? Or was it the other way around, the card first died and it brought the system down?

• Data transfer is extrem slow after partitioning extern usb drive

  I bought an extern usb 3.0 drive with 500 gb capacity. OS is Windows 7. I use it with an usb 2.0 slot, no prob. Initially I used it without making several partitions and it was fast as hell. Then I had the great idea to make partitions, one for programs, one for data and one for backup. I chose the free EASEUS Partition Master 9.1.1. and ended up with these partitions: F:Apps, primary, NTFS, 100gb H:Data, logic, NTFS, 250gb B:Backup, logic, NTFS, 150gb THE PROBLEM: When I copy files from C: to F: I get a transfer rate of about 100 KB/S ! When I copy files from C: to H: I get a transfer rate of about 4 MB/S ! thats all muuuch to slow, slower then before. What can I do to speed the shit up? Thanks in advance!

  On a Linux environment sometimes I need to run a script as root which will add/modify serveral files on my fs. Basically I'd like to know exactly which files are modified and how WITHOUT opening the script and trying to guess the code. I was thinking about using something like unionfs: the main fs would be accessible in readonly mode and all changes are written on a file used as a partition and "mounted" in write mode. Are there other ways to achieve the same goal (i.e. other than unionfs)?

  Hello, I was searching for a long time a Linux Live USB that I can boot my macbook pro from. Is there such distro so I can install it on Snow Leopard or Windows 7? UPDATE I've found this: "isohybrid" CD images (..) are special in that as well as the normal CD-based ISO9660 filesystem they also contain a valid-looking DOS-style partition table. Thus, if you simply copy one of these images raw to a USB stick a normal PC BIOS will boot the image directly. (...) Finally: I'd like to add support into xorriso for creating the nasty HFS hybrid images that are needed for booting Macs. The code that does this in cdrkit is probably some of the worst that I've ever worked with, and I'd like to get away from it.   Hello. I have a 500 GB hard drive with one NTFS-partition on it. I can mount it with Ubuntu and view the contents. But when I try to copy something, I get an I/O error. Ok, I tried to make its image with dd. I/O error as soon as it starts. I have installed ddrescue, but its manual page says not to use it with drives, failing on I/O. Can I manage to get some information from this drive and how to do this?

• Black screen with cursor after BIOS screen

  Here is a weird one, Got computer with Windows XP. It's getting stuck on a black screen with cursor blinking. What did I do: - Boot from installation CD (recovery option - command line): chkdsk C: /R copy D:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\ copy D:\i386\ntldr c:\ fixmbr fixboot Chkdsk showed 0 bad sectors and no problems during scan. dir on C:\ shows all directories and files in place (Windows, Program Files, Documents and Settings). BIOS shows correct boot drive. Still does not boot. Not sure what to think of. Please help. UPDATE: Just performed these steps: Backed up current disk C: (without MBR) using True Image to external hard drive Ran Windows XP clean installation with deleting all partitions and creating new one. Hard drive booted fine into Windows GUI installation!!! Then: I interrupted installation. Booted from True Image recovery CD and restored archive of disk C to an new partition. Same issue with black screen.

  I have a 1 TB hard drive that consists of one NTFS partition which I use to back up my data (no operating system). The size of all the data in it is : 726 GB, size on disk: 728 GB, and the used space when I check the properties is: 731 GB. There's a 5 GB difference between the size and the used space. Why is that huge difference there? What's the difference between these sizes? (size, size on disk, and used space) Is there a way to calculate the difference, and be sure the HDD is not messing around? Is that normal?

  I am using a pre-made social networking script where all user uploads go to site.com/public/user/ How can I make /public/user/ my secondary hard drive so all user uploads are uploaded to my second harddrive and not the primary hard drive. • VMware snapshost issue

  I am using VMware Fusion 2.0 on a Macbook Pro. I have allocated 20GB to a windows partition within VMware, and now wish to expand that. When I go to the settings for the hard drive it tells me: "These settings cannot be changed while the virtual machine has a snapshot. To make changes, first delete all snapshots." When I go to the snapshots settings nothing appears there besides the current state thumbnail. Is there a way to remove these "invicible" snapshots??

  I've got a low-end machine for testing our software. It needs to be tested under various versions of Windows, so I was planning installing each one on its own partition. Then I realized that after testing our software, I'd want to roll back to the previous, clean state. I don't want to use any virtualization software because it tends to interfere with the workings of our app. That said, what's the best way to achieve my goal? Norton Ghost? Edit: I work for a pretty monstrously huge organization. Money is no object here (and sometimes, if the wrong people get wind of it, "open source" software is bad).

• Ways to improve completeness of files for data recovery and scanning?

  I am using R-studio for data recovery on one of my ntfs partition. There is a pdf file about 16MB, but the software can only recover 15MB of it. So I am thinking about what ways can be used to improve the quality of scanning and recovery by the software? I am looking around its preferences. I am not quite sure whether there are some adjustable parameters for scanning and recovery which can be fine-tuned to improve the quality? R-studio has a free demo version, for which scanning is free,but recovery isn't. • unable to format external drive to HFS+ for Mac

  I have an external hard drive (1 TB Western Digital) that is currently formatted as FAT32 and I want to reformat it to a single partition of HFS+ for my Mac. I realize that I can read FAT32 from my Mac but want HFS as it has other feathers like permissions that I'd like to have. I have tried using Disk Utility to format the drive as I have done in the past, but when I go through the process it fails and throws out an error stating that it is unable to reformat the drive to HFS. What might be the reasons that this could happen? Are there any diagnostics I could run on the physical disk to check if it is running well?

  at my 450gb fat32 partition, a directory has a wrong content after improper usb drive disconnect; was: /files (total 250gb) /files/folder/ /files/folder2/ /files/somethn.gs Now: /files/weir?d?name, 5 mb Windows and Linux are saying that most (400 of 450gb) disk space is occupied, but sum of all files/dirs is about 130gb, so it seems that files are still there?. No write attempts since discovery; Rejected tools/methods: chkdsk(Windows7): checking completed, but no changes. fsck.vfat: attempted to ruin drive even more (there is a lot of LFN and unicode names). EasyRecovery. Didn't see the target folder (maybe wrong scan options? tried best match, but not raw scan - it would take days since the drive is usb 5200 rpm..).

• I lost /dev/md2 on my server

  Hi, My 2 hard drives fried at the same moment apparently. My host company rebooted my server in rescue mode and I am trying to recover my data. They told me to mount /dev/sda2 to recover the data I need but, looking at a similar server that I have in pool, the data I'm looking for should be instead in /dev/md2. I can find /dev/md0 but not /dev/md2 (nor /dev/md1). I've looked on several places on the web and I could only find messages explaining how to create new partition. I just need to recover some data, not all of it and I'll be glad if anyone could help me to mount the /dev/md2 folder (or any other trick that would allow me to recover the data that was stored there). • recovering vm data from crashed XenServer install

  We're using xenserver 5.6 from citrix to run our virtual machines. The box is old and creaky, and the hard drive went. (We had a super limited budget of $0 at the time). Turns out the only machine on there we actually needed, was the only one not backed up... anyway, we've replace the hard drive, and reinstalled xensever. however while trying to find our old vm disk images, i have no idea where they sit, and i'm beginning to think they're on a lvm partition? is there anyway to access the disk images from the old vm's on this hard disk, which is attached to the xenserver machine via a usb-sata converter?
