• Who owns the code, who owns the algorithm, who owns the idea?

  This question got me thinking what products of the programming effort belong to the employer, and what don't. The two extremes are (0) the code - it apparently belongs to the employer and (1) the learned personal and technical skills. But what is in between? Who owns the pseudocode/algorithm? Who owns the general idea of the algorithm? Who owns the know-how that such an algorithm may serve some useful purpose (e.g. on this site questions are values, as well as answers)? Also: Who owns an idea on the web?

  In an effort to improve the user experience changes have been made to Service Request (SR) creation process using My Oracle Support (MOS). This change is now online for several high-use CRM products. We aimed to streamline the process by reducing the number of questions, making subsequent questions conditional on previous responses, reducing lists of problem categories, and recommending key documents/evidence which should be supplied to help the Support engineer progress the issue. The process is now divided into three steps: Problem - prompts for a summary of the issue, and what steps have to be performed to re-produce the issue More Information - users will see the biggest change, as they select the ‘Problem Type’, which then presents a series of suggested attachments to upload Severity/Contact - section records who to contact, by what means, and the degree of urgency for the issue. • Kansas City SQL Saturday 2012: BBQ Crawl

  The next Kansas City SQL Saturday is coming up on August 4th.  We’ll have the usual SQL Saturday goodness: lots of technical sessions, great networking events and a fantastic speaker dinner.  And we’ll have the Third Annual Kansas City SQL Saturday BBQ Crawl.  On Friday afternoon we’ll visit a few BBQ places in town.  We tend to order big sampler plates and just share everything around.  It’s a great way to try a variety of styles.  This year we’ll be hitting an all new selection of BBQ joints. You don’t need to be a speaker to attend.  However the call for speakers is open until June 28th (hint, hint).  Locals and out-of-towners are all welcome. If you’re interested in attending send me an email and I’ll get you added to the list. We finish in plenty of time to get you to the speaker dinner – as if you could eat any more.

  Hello, I want to use domains like xxx.abc.domain.tld. The xxx is my folder to access. I tried it with the rewrite rules, but I can't get it working, because I don't know how to get the part xxx from the SERVER_NAME into my RewriteRule. • What are good Software Project Management Texts / Resources?

  I'm looking for ideas and resources pertaining to software project management, specifically resources that I can direct project managers to in order to broaden their knowledge of the subject. So for example an obvious choice here would be The Mythical Man Month - I do think that this would be an appropriate suggested first read for /some/, but not all. Probably for managers that arrive at the job with more of a management background rather than a technical one TMMM might be a bit 'heavy'. I'm looking for similar texts that convey more or less the same messages, but perhaps in a form more appropriate for people from a wide range of backgrounds. Thanks.

• Trying to learn ASP.net

  Hi There, I have a background in computers and had done programming some seven years ago. Switched to becoming a technical writer (oops!). And now think I should jump ship again, back to being a programmer. Of course the natural course of action where I can spend say two whole years learning to code, might not be available any more. I am keen on ASP.net as its the language that most products at my company are written in. I am sure this has been asked before, but here I go... where do I begin?   I'm writing a novel in which an evil programmer wants to include subtle errors in his code that are likely to go unnoticed by his supervisor during a code review and unlikely to be caught by a compiler, yet cause damage at possibly random times when the program is executed by an end-user. I only need a couple of examples, which may be exotic but which have to be easily explainable to non-technical readers. Procedural or object-oriented examples would be equally helpful. (It's been a VERY long time since I've written any code.) Thanks for your help.

• ubuntu-overlay-scrollbars set to false shows no arrows in several cases

  I'm running 12.04, and prefer the more conservative style "normal" scrollbars over the overlay scrollbars. I have set them to false in the terminal: gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface ubuntu-overlay-scrollbars false However after doing so, with some apps (e.g. Nautilus, Document Viewer) my scrollbars only view a vertical bar, but no arrows on the top and bottom to scroll up and down. With some programs these are shown though, for instance Gummi and Texmaker. It would make a big difference (for instance when having to scroll pdf documents containing several hundreds of pages) to have those arrows reinstated. Is there any way to make this work?

• Print Problem: Page Squeezed in Half

  I've just managed to successfully set up my printer (Canon MX320) using the Printing app on Ubuntu 12.04. However the only 1 remaining problem is that each time I tried to print it will only print the file on the top half of the page only: meaning that for some reason, the printer "squeezes" the whole content of each page in the file to fit into the top half of the page only (so the proportion in the print-out is not correct vertically). This happens with every type of file I tried to print (Documents, Images, Web pages). I checked the Printing's setting & properties and couldn't find anything related to this issue yet and I've already made sure to set all the information correct (paper size, source etc.). The Print Preview always display correctly on the screen, but it's only the actual print-out that shows this problem. I also tried with several different types of papers (A4, photos etc.) but the result is always the same: the printer keeps putting the content in the top half of the paper only.

• 12.04 Install on a HP dv9000 screen problem

  Installed 12.04 on a HP dv9000 laptop. First tried to install with a Windows partition; then tried to install and move files from windows but not have a dual boot; then tried to install and have 12.04 have the system all to itself. The install was done off a burned CD... All went well. On reboot - it takes a while to come up the user ID and password challenge. After providing input screen renders and then turns black... First time Ubuntu user/installer - not technical :-)... Thanks for any help... I'll keepon digging in parallel.

  Yesterday we officially launched our new YouTube channel.  Today we are announcing another initiative that we have been working on for a while: to help you learn common customization tasks, we are going to publish a series of detailed How-To documents with lots of screenshots.  Many of these will also be the script for a YouTube video, giving you the choice to see it in action or go through the steps yourself guided by a PDF document. The focus of the initial set of How-Tos will be JDeveloper/ADF customizations, but over time we will expand into other areas.  Today's first document is meant to get everyone up to the point where a JDeveloper environment is up and running: a white paper that shows you how to set up JDeveloper, configure the integrated WLS domain, and make a very, very simple customization work. • What are the benefits of a disk install vs. Wubi? And can I migrate my settings easily?

  I chose to do the Wubi install because it was short, simple, and easy to reverse (no messing with partitions required). To be honest, I can handle the lack of a hibernate function. I haven't really heard many other benefits of installing on a separate partition than hibernation and negligibly faster hard disk read/write. Yet almost everyone I encounter seems to have opted for the disk installation. Are there more benefits I should be aware of, especially as a college student who wants a fast, efficient machine for documents, web browsing, etc. (nothing big like gaming, I can run that on Windows)? Also, I have a fair amount of settings and packages installed that I spent a bit of time on and would rather not have to do again. Is there any way I can migrate all of these settings from the virtual disk on my C:/ drive (Wubi installation) to the disc installation in another partition? (I have a 16GB USB drive if that'll do the trick)

• GlassFish 4.0 Virtualization Progress - VirtualBox

  Wouldn't it be nice if you could spawn GlassFish instances as VirtualBox virtual machines? Well now with early versions of GlassFish 4.0 you can! This page on the GlassFish Wiki documents the steps to get this to work. It walks you through the various VirtualBox (network and services) and GlassFish configuration steps including the creation of VDI templates (typically JeOS images) to finally create a virtual machine on the fly, as part of the typical GlassFish deployment process. The more general virtualization support in GlassFish is discussed in this other Wiki page. Earlier demonstrations of GlassFish.next prototypes or early milestone builds showed support for KVM, "laptop mode" and OVM as well as community involvement from Serli, speaking of which this slide-deck is a good summary of what we're trying to achieve in the GlassFish 4.0 IMS (IaaS Management Service).
