• Farseer Physics Samples and Krypton how to reference game

  I'm sure this is totally simple and yes I am new at this. I am trying to set up Krypton inside farseer. 1. create a new Krypton engine in my sub screen aka AdvancedDemo1 : PhysicsGameScreen, IDemoScreen Via this.krypton = new KryptonEngine(this, "KryptonEffect"); The problem is the KryptonEngine(this wants reference to Game game, I cant seem to reference it from FarseerPhysicsGame : Game So how would I do that? or 2. I can put it directly in FarsserPhysicsGame but again I cant seem to figure out how to reference FarseerPhysicsGame in AdvancedDemo1. or 3. I can put it inside the public FarseerPhysicsGame() and do Componenets.Add(krypton) [which works] HOWEVER I cant figure out how to reference the compoenet once it is added. You should be able to stop reading here , but for more detail I simply took the Farseer XNA Samples went into FarseerPhysicsGame.cs and deleted all the screens and menus except AdvancedDemo1 so there is one option and I just click that to load into the advancedDemo1 and thats where I want to put the lights from krypton. Thanks. Edit: Figured out 1 solution though I am still curious about others. Solution 1 I was able to use ScreenManager.Game(not sure why it was there but Ill try to figure it out later)

• Farseer circle hangs where it's spawned

  I'm currently trying to simply spawn a circle in Farseer. However, it's stuck wherever I spawn it! • Should I avoid or embrace asking questions of other developers on the job?

  As a CS undergraduate, the people around me are either learning or are paid to teach me, but as a software developer, the people around me have tasks of their own. They aren't paid to teach me, and conversely, I am paid to contribute. When I first started working as a software developer co-op, I was introduced to a huge code base written in a language I had never used before. I had plenty of questions, but didn't want to bother my co-workers with all of them - it wasted their time and hurt my pride. Instead, I spent a lot of time bouncing between IDE and browser, trying to make sense of what had already been written and differentiate between expected behavior and symptoms of bugs. I'd ask my co-workers when I felt that the root of my lack of understanding was an in-house concept that I wouldn't find on the internet, but aside from that, I tried to confine my questions to lunch hours. Naturally, there were occasions where I wasted time trying to understand something in code on the internet that had, at its heart, an in-house concept, but overall, I felt I was productive enough during my first semester, contributing about as much as one could expect and gaining a pretty decent understanding of large parts of the product. I was wondering what senior developers felt about that mindset. Should new developers ask more questions to get to speed faster, or should they do their own research for themselves? I see benefits to both mindsets, and anticipate a large variety of responses, but I figure new developers might appreciate your answers without thinking to ask this question.

• How you choose your first job as a programmer? [on hold]

  For Brief I am a recently graduated CS student. I am looking for a job these days, but I have no idea what kind of software development jobs I like(embedded system,web development or else...). And I am looking for your advice. Here is a little more While I was a student, I had an one year internship experience as a system engineer in a semi-conductor company where I wrote Linux driver, tuned system performance, etc.. I was happy about this experience as it allowed me to deepen my understanding of the operating system and different low level things. And I thought "Em, I will continue in the embedded area after I graduate". At the end of my study, I am doing an another internship in web development, both front-end and back-end. And I also enjoys a lot the process of learning new things and making it work (Backbone, Node, socketio, etc..). Now, when I am looking for a software development position, I do not know what to apply! All I know is that I want a job which allows me to keep up with the trends instead of repeating. But besides this, I've no idea what specific type of job I want to do. Turn back to embedded system? Continue with web development? Change to other promising areas(data mining)? All these development positions makes no big difference to me. But I think this is not good and I need some criteria at choosing. So I am looking for advice and I would really appreciate if you can share your experience.

  I am attempting to modify an application with the following characteristics: Written in C#.net Using Visual Studio 2010 The application uses a Master sheet to maintain commonality The Master sheet has the following: <%@ Master Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="mysheet.master.cs" Inherits="master_mysheet" %> Now, currently, the master sheet has an include file that brings in a common footer: #include file="inc/my-footer.inc" Here's what I want to do: I would like to modify the master sheet to be able to read in a footer based on the value contained in a session variable... i.e. (not real code, but just something to give an idea of what I want) if session("x") = "a" then #include file="inc/my-footer1.inc" else #include file="inc/my-footer2.inc" My first instinct was to go with some vbscript: <script type="text/vbscript" language="vbscript"> document.write("vbscript example.") </script> However, it doesn't run the vbscript code automatically on page load. Does anyone know: - The syntax I need to actually get this to work? i.e. to get the vbscript to run automatically on page load, AND to do the page include? - Or, is there a better way to go about this? (perhaps by doing some coding in C#) Note: I am experienced in C#; however, I haven't done any vbscript since the days of ASP classic, so my knowledge there is out of date.

• The model to sell apps on App Store is better with a paid only version?

  Rob Napier, the author of iOS 5 Programming Pushing the Limits, mentioned there are several models of selling apps on the App Store: Write an app and sell it Publish a free and a full version Ad supported by third party or by iAd In App purchase Surprisingly, the author said that the most workable model is (1) in terms of sales. I would think that (2) with fairly limiting ability for the free version can bring more sales, as people without trying, might not plunge down $0.99 or $1.99 for something they haven't tried? I for one, might not have purchased Angry Birds if I didn't try their free version first. Also, I think it also depends on the situation: if the app is about alarm clock, and there are already 5 alarm clocks in App Store that are free, then your app that is $0.99 might not be that eagerly purchased. If yours is also free, and users really like it out of all the other ones, then they may think, $0.99 is nothing to get a good alarm clock, and gladly pay you the $0.99 in exchange for a full version of the alarm clock, something that they can't get with the free version. (such as the full version can let you choose a song from your Music Library for the alarm). Could (1) work only if the user definitely want it and have no substitute? How might it work the best?

• Which field of programming is known as the best practice for Java? [closed]

  I'm a CS student and I have some programming background such as PHP, JavaScript and Pascal. Since Java is so popular among local companies and Java is known as market skill, I'm going to learn it. But I don't know in which field I can use it. So I wonder, what can I do with Java? I heard that Java is not good for web development, although there is Play! Framework. I know a lot of people who prefer to use Python, Ruby and PHP for web development instead of Java and its Play. I also heard that Java is not good to write destkop applications, although it's cross-platform. Many programmers prefer C# for destkop. So I see there's only one field which I can use Java for it - is Android development. But I'm not interested in mobile application development. So my question is which field of programming is known as the best practice for Java? Thanks in advance.

• I failed FizzBuzz, would you hire me? [closed]

  I'm a developer with a CS degree and have work experience doing development in a number of languages for almost 3 years. Today had an interview (2nd interview) with a panel of people. Overall it went quite well, I prepared for most of the questions and felt ready for anything. At the end of the interview, they gave me ONE programming question...a problem like FizzBuzz (without the print the number part). I believe I made too many mistakes and thus have "failed" it. Is all hope lost for me? Here is my code: void FizzBuzz() { for(int i = 0; i <= 100; i++) { bool isThree = i % 3; bool isFive = i % 5; if (isThree) { print "Fizz\n"; } else if(isFive) { print "Buzz\n"; } else { print "FizzBuzz\n"; } } } As you can see I messed up the bools which should have the syntax i % 3 == 0; If I'm remembering the question right I also put an else instead of an elseif with isThree && isFive. I was quite stressed, but that's no excuse for missing a simple problem. So the question is, if my work history and personality fit with the job and this is the only code you've seen, would you hire me?

• What design pattern (in python) to use for properly seperate runtime infos with core code?

  I am not sure if this is a clear question. I work on a python project that is based on terminal(console), for which I am planning to implement a GUI. I am not major in CS so I really have no idea about how to effectively design a message system such that: in console, it provide nice look info when runtime. in GUI, it is directed to a certain widget, let's say, a text label, or a bottom bar, or a hide-able frame. Do you have any suggestions? Currently, I am using print function to provide essential informations on stdout during runtime. So a lot of print .... are distributed here and there among the code. I am thinking to use macro-like variables such as 'FILE_NOT_EXTIS_MESSAGE' for printing, and define the variables in one file. Is this a standard way that people always do? How about I introduce a logging system? In sum, I am ask for a pattern that people are commonly using for handling of screen output information with high effectiveness and adaptivity.

• Server.transfer causing HttpException

  I am developing a C#/SQL ASP.NET web application in VS 2008. Currently I am using the Server.Transfer method to transfer control from one ASPX.CS file to another ASPX file. The first time through, this works. But after control is transferred to this new file it encounters a condition: if (restart == false) { where "restart" is a boolean variable. After this statement it immediately transfers control back to the same ASPX.CS file and tries to reexecute the Server.Transfer method. This time it gives me the following exception and stack trace. Do you know what is causing this? I tried to read this but it didn't make much sense to me. You should be 100% sure everything works fine by now, otherwise see below to distinguish the remaining 1% from your 99% certainty.Verify Certificate and Key are matchingYou can compare the modulus of private key and public certificate and they should match in order for the key to fit the lock. • Azure WNS to Win8 - Push Notifications for Metro Apps

  Background The Windows Azure Toolkit for Windows 8 allows you to build a Windows Azure Cloud Service that can send Push Notifications to registered Metro apps via Windows Notification Service (WNS). Some configuration is required - you need to: Register the Metro app for Windows Live Application Management Provide Package SID & Client Secret to WNS Modify the Azure Cloud App cscfg file and the Metro app package.appxmanifest file to contain matching Metro package name, SID and client secret. The Mechanism: These notifications take the form of XAML Tile, Toast, Raw or Badge UI notifications. The core engine is provided via the WNS nuget recipe, which exposes an API for constructing payloads and posting notifications to WNS. An application receives push notifications by requesting a notification channel from WNS, which returns a channel URI that the application then registers with a cloud service. In the cloud service, A WnsAccessTokenProvider authenticates with WNS by providing its credentials, the package SID and secret key, and receives in return an access token that the provider caches and can reuse for multiple notification requests. The cloud service constructs a notification request by filling out a template class that contains the information that will be sent with the notification, including text and image references. Using the channel URI of a registered client, the cloud service can then send a notification whenever it has an update for the user. This folder contains a full version of the sample application showing how to use Windows Push Notifications using ASP.NET Membership as the authentication mechanism. With WNS, tier integration is so automated that you don’t even have to leverage a HTTP push API such as SignalR. This is a pretty powerful development paradigm, and has changed the way I look at Windows 8 for RAD business apps. When I originally looked at Win8 and the WinRT API, my first opinion on Win8 dev was as follows – GOOD:WinRT, WRL, C++/CX, WinJS, XAML (& ease of Direct3D integration); BAD: low projected market penetration,.NET lobotomized (Only 8% of .NET 4.5 classes can be used in Win8 non-desktop apps - http://bit.ly/HRuJr7); UGLY:Metro pascal tiles! Perhaps my 80s teenage years gave me a punk reactionary sense of revulsion towards the Partridge Family 70s style that Metro UX seems to have appropriated: On second thought though, it simplifies UI dev to a single paradigm (although UX guys will need to change career) – you will not find an easier app dev environment. Speculation: If LightSwitch is going to support HTML5 client app generation, then its a safe guess to say that vnext will support Win8 Metro XAML - a much easier port from Silverlight XAML. Given the VS2012 LightSwitch integration as a thumbs up from the powers that be at MS, and given that Win8 C#/XAML Metro apps tend towards a streamlined 'golden straight-jacket' cookie cutter app dev style with an Azure back-end supporting Win8 push notifications... --> its easy to extrapolate than LightSwitch vnext could well be the Win8 Metro XAML to Azure RAD tool of choice! The hook is already there - :) Why else have the space next to the HTML Client box? This high level of application development abstraction will facilitate rapid app cookie-cutter architecture-infrastructure frameworks for wrapping any app. This will allow me to avoid too much XAML code-monkeying around & focus on my area of interest: Technical Computing.
