• Ideas for loading initial data in an iPhone application?

  Hi all, In my app I want to load some initial data to show the user how it works. The app uses a CoreData managed sqllite db. SO far I've thought of 3 options: Write code into a class to programmatically create the data. Create a xml file in the apps resources and load through a NSXmlParser whose delegate creates the entries in the sqllite db. Same as option #2, but use a json file and bring in a 3rd party lib to read it. Are there other options I have not found yet? and given that I'm talking about perhaps 6 records per table when there are 3 tables, which would you choose?

• File created using MODE_WORLD_READABLE not getting sent as attachment by email

  I created the SQLite DB using the following code: context.openOrCreateDatabase(dbName, Context.MODE_WORLD_READABLE, null); And tried to send it as attachment by email using the following code: Intent emailIntent = new Intent(android.content.Intent.ACTION_SEND) .setType("message/rfc822") .putExtra(android.content.Intent.EXTRA_STREAM, Uri.fromFile(getDatabasePath(dbName))); startActivity(Intent.createChooser(emailIntent, null)); This opens the GMail compose activity with the attachment icon. But the recipient did not receive the attachment. This has been asked before. But it looks like there is no solution other than to copy the db file to SD card. My question then is: What is the use of the MODE_WORLD_READABLE flag if another app like GMail is unable to read the file?

  Just wondering if there is a way to take some of the repitition out of a LINQ to SQL projected type. Example: Table: Address Fields: AddressID, HouseNumber, Street, City, State, Zip, +20 more Class MyAddress: AddressID, HouseNumber, Street (Only 3 fields) LINQ: from a in db.Addresses select new MyAddress { AddressID = a.AddressID, HouseNumber = a.HouseNumber, Street = a.Street } The above query works perfectly, and I understand why something like this will return all 20+ fields in each row: from a in db.Addresses select new MyAddress(a); class MyAddress { public MyAddress(Address a) { this.AddressID = a.AddressID, this.HouseNumber = a.HouseNumber, this.Street = a.Street } } Which leads me to my Question: Is it possible to implement some kind of helper function or extension method to "map" from the LINQ model to MyAddress yet only return the necessary fields in the query result rather than all of the fields?

• jquery $.ajax not working in firefox against rails (406 response) (works in chrome & IE)

• CRUD Question with Codeigniter

  I have a database with blog entries in it. The desired output I am trying to acheive is 3 entrys displayed using the css3 multi paragraph and then another 3(or more) formatted with the codeigniter Character_limiter. So I need 3 displays formatted one way and 3+ formatted another way on the same page. So far this is what I have, but i do not know how to format the sql to achieve what I want. • Having difficulty catching postgresql exception in sequel/ruby

  I have postgresql table that has somekind of unique constraint. I have ruby script that will update this table. The ruby script should be able to switch to UPDATE instead of INSERT when this kind of error occured: PGError: ERROR: duplicate key value violates unique constraint CMIIW, sequel seems cannot catch this exception??   I wrote the exact query I need in Mongo console, but I'm having trouble rewriting it in C# driver. Here's a sample of the document, it's simple dictionary: { "_id" : ObjectId("539716bc101c588f941e2c27"), "_t" : "DictionaryDocument", "CsvSeparator" : ",", "SelectedAccounts" : "0", ... } Here's the query: db.settings.find({"SelectedAccounts" :{$exists:true}},{"SelectedAccounts":1, "_id":0} ) Now, I got the first part, Find with exists working, but how to write the second parameter in C# driver? I'd just like a single string as a result, not entire document. Here's C# code I got so far: _collection.FindOneAs(typeof(DictionaryDocument), Query.Exists(key)); key in this case is "SelectedAccounts". I'd like the query to filter and return only the data I need, I don't want to return all the results and search on the C# side. EDIT: I wouldn't mind if _id was passed back, but I don't need it. So only this part would work if it could be converted in C#: db.settings.find({"SelectedAccounts" :{$exists:true}},{"SelectedAccounts":1} )

Question: I have a legacy system with users and files, the info of all files pertaining to a user are stored on a flat file. I want to upgrade this system by storing all info on a db, design tables, and create a C# system that will populate the new db as well as ftp the files to a new path. Define the desgin consideration and develop a prototype. Note: We are looking more for what design one would use and why rather than code that compiles. • As a team should we develop locally and merge into the dev server, or develop on the dev server?

  Hey, Recently I was tasked with writing up formal procedures for a team based development enviroment. We have several projects with multiple modules each. Right now there are only two programmers, however there are plans to expand to 4-6 programmers. Each programmer will be working on the same project and possibly pages which may cause over writing or error issues. So far the ideal solution I have thought up is: Local development (WAMP/VM or some virtual server instance on their own machine). Once a developer has finished their developments, they check it into the CVS Repository and merge it wih other fixes etc. The CVS version is then deployed to the primary dev server for testing by the devs. The MySQL DAtabases are kept on the primary dev server and users may remotely connect to it. Any Schema / Data alterations are run through a DB Admin who will notify all devs of any DB Changes (Which should be rare). Does anyone see an issue with this or have a better solution?

• choose append to existing backup instead of overwrite

  Hello, I have a database and I made it's first backup 2 days ago. Then yesterday I spent an entire adding new records. This morning I ran a backup, (but I selected append to existing backup set) as pictured below. I just ran a restore and I found that it wiped out all my data from yesterday and it restored it from the backup of 2 days ago. Not the version from this mornings backup. I zipped this backup file to be safe. I changed some data in the DB, Then I ran the back up again, but this time I selected "overwrite all existing backup sets" Now when I restore the db it's seems to restore the data from the backup correctly. I think I learned a lesson here, correctly if I'm wrong My questions is, Did I lose an entire day of work? I still have this morning's backup .bak file safe in a zip. Is there anyway I can restore is with the right data?

  From within the setup_app function (websetup.py) of a pylons i18n application, which is making use of a db, I was trying to initiate multilingual content to be inserted into the db. • Serving images from Amazon S3 in PHP application

  So it just occurred to me that once I upload profile pics to S3, I have to figure out a way to keep track of the files. For example, if "susan" uploads 3 profile pics, I need to recall those 3 pictures and display it on her profile page if someone views her page. With that said, would the following work? User uploads picture from form Save file information (filename, user info, etc...) into DB and reference URL from S3 Upload photos to S3 When displaying pictures, I'll query the DB for the info and display the images from S3 accordingly.

• Seeking free ODBC database optimization tool for non-experts

  I'm a database n00b and am reading as many books as I can. I have been given responsibility for an ODBC tool where the databases were designed by a hardware engineer with some VB experience - which made him a s/w guru in the small firm at that time. Things are running slowly and I suspect that the db could have been designed better. I hope to learn enough to use Explain/Describe, etc maybe add some indices, but, in the meantime, is there any free for commercial use tool which can examine an ODBC database and suggest improvements. I'm just talking about db schema here, but maybe I should also be looking at optimizing Selects with Joins? Is there a tool for that? ODBC compliant.

  I'm writing a small intranet app that uses Windows Authentication and Asp.Net MVC. I need to store various bits of data in a db against each user. As far as I can tell the IPrinciple object does not seem to have something like a unique id. So I was thinking I could just use User.Identity.Name as a unique value to identify rows in my db. Is this a bad idea? Is there an alternative to this approach? Thanks for any help.

• How do I create a safe local development environment?

  I'm currently doing web development with another developer on a centralized development server. In the past this has worked alright, as we have two separate projects we are working on and rarely conflict. Now, however, we are adding a third (possible) developer into the mix. This is clearly going to create problems with other developers changes affecting my work and vice versa. To solve this problem, I'm thinking the best solution would be to create a virtual machine to distribute between the developers for local use. The problem I have is when it comes to the database. Given that we all develop on laptops, simply keeping a local copy of the live data is plain stupid. I've considered sanitizing the data, but I can't really figure out how to replace the real data, with data that would be representative of what people actually enter with out repeating the same information over and over again, e.g. everyone's address becomes 123 Testing Lane, Test Town, WA, 99999 or something. Is this really something to be concerned about? Are there tools to help with this sort of thing? I'm using MySQL. Ideally, if I sanitized the db it should be done from a script that I can run regularly. If I do this I'd also need a way to reduce the size of the db itself. (I figure I could select all the records created after x and whack them and all the records in corresponding tables out so that isn't really a big deal.) The second solution I've thought of is to encrypt the hard drive of the vm, but I'm unsure of how practical this is in terms of speed and also in the event of a lost/stolen laptop. If I do this, should the vm hard drive file itself be encrypted or should it be encrypted in the vm? (I'm assuming the latter as it would be portable and doesn't require the devs to have any sort of encryption capability on their OS of choice.) The third is to create a copy of the database for each developer on our development server that they are then responsible to keep the schema in sync with the canonical db by means of migration scripts or what have you. This solution seems to be the simplest but doesn't really scale as more developers are added. How do you deal with this problem?

  I make the following call to the DB. @patientRegistration = PatientRegistration.find(:all, :conditions=["name = '#{patientName}'"]) Search for patient registration based on a given name. I get a valid @patientRegistration object.When I invoke @patientRegistration.inspect it prints correctly all the values for the object in the DB. But when I try to read a particular attribute (Say id or name) by doing the following: @patientRegistration.id or @patientRegistration.name. I get invalid values. Either its blank or some junk values. I dont understand how inspect is able to retrieve all the values correctly but reading individual attributes gives invalid values. Thanks

• Using WCF to expose underlying process

  I have a server application that spins up and monitors about 8 separate processes that gather data from different systems. The server app then runs some calculations over the aggregated data and stores it in a db. Simple stuff. I now have a requirement to modify the process so that it no longer saves data to the db but rather exposes it directly to clients via WCF. That's cool, I've used WCF a fair bit but I'm struggling a little with it for some reason. Basically my plan is to HOST the WCF service in my application and have calls redirect into the internals of my existing application but I can figure out how to do that without getting the WCF class to encapsulate the existing app. I want the service to inside my current app, not become it. Any suggestions?

Twitter claims it uses FlockDB for the following: Twitter runs FlockDB on a large cluster of machines. we use it to store social graphs (who follows whom, who blocks whom) and secondary indices at twitter. At first glance, setup and trying it doesn't look straight forward. Have anyone already used it / setup this? If so, please answer the following general queries. What kind of applications is it better suited for? (Twitter claims it is simple and very rough, it remains to see what it meant though) How is FlockDB better than other graph db / noSQL db. Have you setup FlockDB, used it for a application? Early advices any? Note: I am evaluating the FlockDB and other graph databases mainly for learning them. Perhaps, I will build an application for that.
