    Is there a way to specify, for example 4 distinct values for a varchar column in MS SQL Server 2008? For example, I need a column called Frequency (varchar) that only accepts 'Daily', 'Weekly', 'Monthly', 'Yearly' as possible values Is this possible to set within the SQL Server Management Studio when creating the table?

  • Check if a pointer points to allocated memory on the heap.

    Ok, I know this question seems to have been asked many times on stackoverflow. but please read Well the answer for any address is "No you can't" but the question here is to know if a pointer points to a piece of memory allocated with malloc/new. Actually I think it could be easily implemented overriding malloc/free and keeping track of allocated memory ranges. Do you know a memory management library providing this specific tool ?

  • How to explain to client that you can't give them some of the source

    We have a number of AS/Flex components that we've built over time and improved upon. They've been turned into components so they can be reused in different projects and save us time. So you can think of them as part of an in-house framework of sorts. We're now realizing that it doesn't make sense to release the source code for these components to the various clients as part of the project, because technically this code isn't really owned by the clients. So my question When a client comes to you, how do you explain to them that you can't give them the full source code for those components. The client doesn't understand the difference, he just expects you to give them all the code for the site that he paid you to do. He doesn't understand that this code has taken you a lot longer to write than what he's paying for his site. But since he doesn't understand, he would get turned off and thinks you're ripping him off or something. How do you handle this situation? What do you tell clients upfront? Do you advertise it on your site from the very beginning? How do you handle their objections so they still hire you? As a side question, how often do you give AS and Flex source code to your clients? In the case when the code doesn't have any in-house components that you reuse in several projects, and in the case when it does have in-house components.

I think it's pretty simple, add/remove just allows me to perform other logic when I subscribe and unsubscribe? Am I getting it, or is there more to it? Also, while I'm here, any advice / best practices for cleaning up my event handles.

  • SQL SERVER – Curious Case of Disappearing Rows – ON UPDATE CASCADE and ON DELETE CASCADE – Part 1 of 2

    Social media has created an Always Connected World for us. Recently I enrolled myself to learn new technologies as a student. I had decided to focus on learning and decided not to stay connected on the internet while I am in the learning session. On the second day of the event after the learning was over, I noticed lots of notification from my friend on my various social media handle. He had connected with me on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, YouTube as well SMS, WhatsApp on the phone, Skype messages and not to forget with a few emails. I right away called him up. The problem was very unique – let us hear the problem in his own words. “Pinal – we are in big trouble we are not able to figure out what is going on. Our product details table is continuously loosing rows. Lots of rows have disappeared since morning and we are unable to find why the rows are getting deleted. We have made sure that there is no DELETE command executed on the table as well. The matter of the fact, we have removed every single place the code which is referencing the table. We have done so many crazy things out of desperation but no luck. The rows are continuously deleted in a random pattern. Do you think we have problems with intrusion or virus?” After describing the problems he had pasted few rants about why I was not available during the day. I think it will be not smart to post those exact words here (due to many reasons). Well, my immediate reaction was to get online with him. His problem was unique to him and his team was all out to fix the issue since morning. As he said he has done quite a lot out in desperation. I started asking questions from audit, policy management and profiling the data. Very soon I realize that I think this problem was not as advanced as it looked. There was no intrusion, SQL Injection or virus issue. Well, long story short first - It was a very simple issue of foreign key created with ON UPDATE CASCADE and ON DELETE CASCADE.  CASCADE allows deletions or updates of key values to cascade through the tables defined to have foreign key relationships that can be traced back to the table on which the modification is performed. ON DELETE CASCADE specifies that if an attempt is made to delete a row with a key referenced by foreign keys in existing rows in other tables, all rows containing those foreign keys are also deleted. ON UPDATE CASCADE specifies that if an attempt is made to update a key value in a row, where the key value is referenced by foreign keys in existing rows in other tables, all of the foreign key values are also updated to the new value specified for the key. (Reference: BOL) In simple words – due to ON DELETE CASCASE whenever is specified when the data from Table A is deleted and if it is referenced in another table using foreign key it will be deleted as well. In my friend’s case, they had two tables, Products and ProductDetails. They had created foreign key referential integrity of the product id between the table. Now the as fall was up they were updating their catalogue. When they were updating the catalogue they were deleting products which are no more available. As the changes were cascading the corresponding rows were also deleted from another table. This is CORRECT. The matter of the fact, there is no error or anything and SQL Server is behaving how it should be behaving. The problem was in the understanding and inappropriate implementations of business logic.  What they needed was Product Master Table, Current Product Catalogue, and Product Order Details History tables. However, they were using only two tables and without proper understanding the relation between them was build using foreign keys. If there were only two table, they should have used soft delete which will not actually delete the record but just hide it from the original product table. This workaround could have got them saved from cascading delete issues. I will be writing a detailed post on the design implications etc in my future post as in above three lines I cannot cover every issue related to designing and it is also not the scope of the blog post. More about designing in future blog posts. Once they learn their mistake, they were happy as there was no intrusion but trust me sometime we are our own enemy and this is a great example of it.   • Do we still have a case against the goto statement? [closed]

In a recent article, Andrew Koenig writes: When asked why goto statements are harmful, most programmers will say something like "because they make programs hard to understand." Press harder, and you may well hear something like "I don't really know, but that's what I was taught." For that reason, I'd like to summarize Dijkstra's arguments. He then shows two program fragments, one without a goto and and one with a goto: if (n < 0) n = 0; Assuming that n is a variable of a built-in numeric type, we know that after this code, n is nonnegative. Suppose we rewrite this fragment: if (n >= 0) goto nonneg; n = 0; nonneg: ; In theory, this rewrite should have the same effect as the original. However, rewriting has changed something important: It has opened the possibility of transferring control to nonneg from anywhere else in the program. I emphasized the part that I don't agree with. Modern languages like C++ do not allow goto to transfer control arbitrarily. Here are two examples: You cannot jump to a label that is defined in a different function. You cannot jump over a variable initialization. Now consider composing your code of tiny functions that adhere to the single responsibility principle: int clamp_to_zero(int n) { if (n >= 0) goto n_is_not_negative: n = 0; n_is_not_negative: return n; } The classic argument against the goto statement is that control could have transferred from anywhere inside your program to the label n_is_not_negative, but this simply is not (and was never) true in C++. If you try it, you will get a compiler error, because labels are scoped. The rest of the program doesn't even see the name n_is_not_negative, so it's just not possible to jump there. This is a static guarantee! Now, I'm not saying that this version is better then the one without the goto, but to make the latter as expressive as the first one, we would at least have to insert a comment, or even better yet, an assertion: int clamp_to_zero(int n) { if (n < 0) n = 0; // n is not negative at this point assert(n >= 0); return n; } Note that you basically get the assertion for free in the goto version, because the condition n >= 0 is already written in line 1, and n = 0; satisfies the condition trivially. But that's just a random observation. It seems to me that "don't use gotos!" is one of those dogmas like "don't use multiple returns!" that stem from a time where the real problem were functions of hundreds or even thousand of lines of code. So, do we still have a case against the goto statement, other than that it is not particularly useful? I haven't written a goto in at least a decade, but it's not like I was running away in terror whenever I encountered one. 1 Ideally, I would like to see a strong and valid argument against gotos that still holds when you adhere to established programming principles for clean code like the SRP. "You can jump anywhere" is not (and has never been) a valid argument in C++, and somehow I don't like teaching stuff that is not true. 1: Also, I have never been able to resurrect even a single velociraptor, no matter how many gotos I tried :(

  • Why do I get Access Denied when using WinRM?

    Following on from this question: Why does my PowerShell script hang when called in PSEXEC via a batch (.cmd) file? I took the advice from Jim B and installed WinRM. To recap I have two servers: HMon01 - runs Windows 2003 Standard SP2 Web1928 - runs Windows 2008 Standard SP2 Both servers are standalone. I installed WinRM for Windows 2003 from here and configured WinRM as follows on both machines: Client NetworkDelayms = 5000 URLPrefix = wsman AllowUnencrypted = false Auth Basic = true Digest = true Kerberos = true Negotiate = true Certificate = true DefaultPorts HTTP = 80 HTTPS = 443 TrustedHosts = * The problem I have is that if I remotely execute commands using the remote machine's built in Administrator account then all is well. However I have an account on the remote machine named remoteexec which is a member of the Administrators group (we disable our Administrator accounts). If I use this account then I get Access Denied errors. I've done all the usual things such as checking passwords and the like. Why would this be?

  • ESXi hard drive power saving

    I currently have a Windows Server running beneath my desk and was considering replacing it with a ESXi layer to run both a Windows and Unix virtual machine. The ESXi is going to give me some nice advantages that I can use but I am still stuck on this issue: The server is mainly used as a fileserver/local webserver, and I use Windows tasks to hibernate/wake the machine at night. Also there is an aggressive disk spin down timeout to reduce noise. With ESXi, this will not be possible to do any more. I could live with the server running 24/7, but I would really like to spin down the disks when not in use. Is there a way to do this on ESXi?

  • Lock application window movement on Mac

    Sometimes, when I use touchpad to control cursor and I'm clicking or double clicking, I move the application window a few pixels because my finger does not tap the touchpad on one place. Is there a way (Mac OS X) to lock application window, so that it can't be moved with cursor unless unlocked again? Is there another way to solve this? (Besides me being more careful when double clicking...) Edit: Is there even an attribute of "window object" that can lock it's position? I can try to write an App that handles just that (or a script run every time I run Application which I want to lock windows for). If there isn't would an OS X Application that "watches" windows movements and counters them (moves back) be hard to code?

    I recently discovered and fell in love with Roboform. In less than a week it's become indispensable. So far I've only seen Roboform's ability to fill out fields in web browsers and Windows GUI apps. I'm an app developer and sometimes I need to use Telnet/SSH. My SSH client of choice is PuTTY, but I can't find any way to integrate Roboform with PuTTY. Is this possible? If not, is there another [free] SSH client that will work with Roboform?

  • Gnome-Applets Package Causing Gnome to Segfault

    When I boot ubuntu I get a bunch of windows saying "The panel encountered a problem while loading: OAFIID:GNOME_ShowDesktopApplet", with a bunch of others(5) besides ShowDesktopApplet. I am able to launch a terminal, and I do have the taskbar at the top, although the bar at the bottom that holds the windows is blank, so when I minimize a window it disappears. Furthermore, when I try to launch most applications (firefox for example) it segfaults. I have googled the error but it seems to be common but general issue, and a lot of the solutions that worked for others didn't work for me. I tried deleting the gconf, gnome, and gnome2 folders in my home directory. I tried deleting a bunch of the gnome folders (although I might have done this wrong, I was confused as to which ones). I have also tried to use apt-get and dpkg to re-install ubuntu-desktop and gnome-applets. However, when I try apt-get install ubuntu-desktop I get errors regarding /var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-applets_2.28.0-0ubunt2_amd64.deb I tried dpkg --configure -a and interestingly I get Package gnome-applets is not installed. When I try to use apt-get to install it, that same pesky problem pops up error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-applets_2.28.0-0ubunt2_amd64.deb (--unpack) subprocess new post-removal script returned error exist status 245 sub process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code(1) This file has been popping up with regards to a lot of the solutions suggested I see. Any ideas?

  • Cant access Dell BMC IPMI Over IP

    I have Dell R210 with iDRAC BMC (new name for old BMC). Which is on-board feature with shared NIC (I believe). Server is on colocation and I didnt set it up before sent there... So I asked for the remote hands to setup IPMI Over IP. They enabled it, set the IP and everything. The IP is different than main box IP. Also the box is cabled to NIC1 and the BMC supposed to share it (am I right?) I can see new IP in the Open Server Administrator (installed on the box). I tried Supermicro IPMI tool and I tried Dell ipmish.exe command like this ipmish -ip xxx -u root -p calvin sysinfo gives BMC is not detected What could be wrong? is there a diagnostics tool I can try? It must be something obvious. I just never used things like that before.... P.S. I read something about encryptions key in the Dell docs. But I understand that is for encrypted IPMI 2.0 and ipmish can use IPMI 1.5 without encryption.

  • Aptitude command on fedora

    Hi, linux newbie here. I'm running Fedora 12 and I have a script for Ubuntu installing a bunch of packages using aptitude. I tried installing the packages using yum, but most of them aren't available. The packages aren't very new or complicated stuff, is there any way get packages through aptitude on fedora? Or am I just going to have to find the Fedora equivalent of each package manually, for example the first package installed is g++ and of course this has a fedora equivalent.

    Robocopy is preinstalled with Windows 7. I've used it many times in the past. I tried to copy a folder to a remote share with robocopy c:\source "\\server\share\path" /s /r:2 /w:2` As a result I get permission denied. Using explorer I can copy files to this share. I've opened a command prompt with administrator permissions with the same result. The share is read/write for public. [EDIT] I've successfully mapped a driveletter to the share, but robocopy still fails EDIT I've added the /B switch without success. The exact error is: 2009/09/26 20:43:14 ERROR 5 (0x00000005) Accessing Destination Directory \drobo \Drobo\fotos__NEW\Ericsson\

    Possible Duplicate: Naming convention for computers It seems an important and difficult dilemma for me how to name network hosts (routers, servers (while a server can be a router and host diverse services at the same time), virtual machines (while they host important services and can migrate), workstations and notebooks (using pc-username is not the best idea as users may change), printers & MFUs, surveillance IP cameras, etc). Are there known and accepted best practices for this task? Excuse me if there already was a similar question here (I think it probably was), I haven't found it.

  • How do you organise the cables in your racks?

    I'm migrating my current half-size rack to a full-size rack and want to take the opportunity to reorganize and sort our spaghetti-hell of ethernet cables. What system do you use for organising your cables? Do you use any tracking software? Do you physically label the cables? What are you identifying when you label each end? Mac address? Port number? Asset number? What do you use to label them? I was looking at a hand held labeler, but the wrap around laser printer sheets might work. The Brady ID PAL seems good, but it's pricey. Ideas?
