• Pysdm has disabled my ability to write to my storage partition

  I have a dual boot setup with Windows 7 and Mint 13 Cinnamon. As well as their respective partitions I also have a large one (NTFS) for storing all my music, videos, documents etc. I downloaded pysdm as I was told it would enable me to configure Linux to auto-mount my storage partition. It has indeed been helpful in auto-mounting my storage. However, since installing it I can no longer write to the partition which makes 500GB of my hard drive utterly useless! I've tried to unselect the "Mount file system in read only mode" option, but the program keeps re-checking it after I close that window (and even when I click apply). Why is it doing this and how can I get it to recognise that I need to read AND write on that partition?

• How do I disable other monitors while running games in Wine?

  My current setup is: * Dual GTS 250 video cards * 3 Monitors * Used nvidia-settings to run each monitor as a separate x session * This is all running on Linux Mint Debian Edition When running games (Starcraft II) in Wine via PlayOnLinux, I've found that the mouse does not get locked. I already tried various solutions littered across the web and none work so I'd rather just disable my other two monitors while playing. Does anyone know of a method where I can turn off my other two monitors (not my primary monitor) while running Wine and then turn then back on afterwards? I don't mind having to manually run a script before and after gaming. Thanks.

  I am setting up a new Dell server with iDRAC 6 Express. My options for the NIC are: 1) Shared 2) Shared with failover to LOM2 3) Shared with failover to all LOMs The server has 2x dual-nic PCI-E cards (total of 4 nics) My questions are thusly: -What is best practice for setting this up? Is there any reason why I would not want option 3? -If the NIC is being used for both iDRAC and the OS, (there is no dedicated iDRAC nic), does this ever cause any kinds of issues for either iDRAC or the OS? • SQL Performance Problem IA64

  We’ve got a performance problem in production. QA and DEV environments are 2 instances on the same physical server: Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2, 32 GB RAM, 1 Quad 3.5 GHz Intel Xeon X5270 (4 cores x64), SQL 2005 SP3 (9.0.4262), SAN Drives Prod: Windows 2003 Datacenter SP2, 64 GB RAM, 4 Dual Core 1.6 GHz Intel Family 80000002, Model 6 Itanium (8 cores IA64), SQL 2005 SP3 (9.0.4262), SAN Drives, Veritas Cluster I am seeing excessive Signal Wait Percentages ( 250%) and Page Reads /s (50) and Page Writes /s (25) are both high occasionally. I did test this query on both QA and PROD and it has the same execution plan and even the same stats: SELECT top 40000000 * INTO dbo.tmp_tbl FROM dbo.tbl GO Scan count 1, logical reads 429564, physical reads 0, read-ahead reads 0, lob logical reads 0, lob physical reads 0, lob read-ahead reads 0. As you can see it’s just logical reads, however: QA: 0:48 Prod: 2:18 So It seems like a processor related issue, however I’m not sure where to go next, any ideas? Thanks, Aaron

• Browsers not responding

  Hello, Strange thing started to happen to my computer yesterday, and I can not recall installing anything new or updating anything the last few days either. It was first the browser, Chromium, that started to freeze up and not respond for ages, say 10 minutes. Then my email, Windows Live Mail client started doing the same thing, I click on an email and the program goes "not responding" for 5-10 minutes. At first I thought it was Chromium, so i reinstalled it but no help, So i installed Opera and thought I would give it t a try, but not same thing is happening to Opera so it is clearly an OS issue or/and internet connection issue. Does anyone know what the problem can be? Im running Windows 7 32bit on a dual core Sony vaio laptop with 4gb ram. There is nothing wrong with the actual internet connection as it works fine on other computers on the network, and the connection it self does not drop. Grateful for any help, Jesper

• CentOS, sudo Doesn't Accept root Password, but Logging in as root Works

  I am new to Linux and I have CentOS running on a dual boot system. I was trying to edit a file requiring root permissions, so I used sudo. I typed the root password and it failed. This happened three times, and the process was ended. I then logged in as root (su) and was able to navigate to the file and make changes as root. Am I missing something? How would I edit the sudoers file such that this password would work? Or is there another way to log in to the sudo group to make these changes? How do I set sudo passwords?

Also, since I dual boot, I get the grub options initially to select Windows or Ubuntu that waits for 10 seconds for me to choose. What is the channel utilization if a stop-and-wait protocol is used for frame transmission on a 64 Mbps point-to-point link? Assume that the frame size is 32 KB and the speed of light is 3 × 10^8 m/s. Suppose a sliding window protocol is used instead. For what send window size will the link utilization be 100%? • Error adding 4tb LUN (Raw Device Mapping) to ESX4 VM

  Hi guys, I'm trying to map an existing 4tb LUN from a Fibre Channel SAN, through to a VM in my ESX4 environment. It keeps telling me that the VMDK file size exceeds the the maximum size supported by the datastore. I've tried in Physical compatibility mode, and also both Virtual styles. I'm a little confused by this as we had the same LUN mapped through to another VM when we were running ESX3.5... I've also noticed that some of my other RAW mappings are generating extremely large VMDK files on the ESX servers. Does anyone know if this change in behaviour is intentional? And if so why? It doesn't seem to me that if the LUN is mapped directly to the VM that it's size should be relevant. We're running 4.0.0 build 236512, and 4.0.0 build 219382 and I've not had any success on either. Any insight or advice would be much appreciated! TG

• How to add higher video resolution in Ubuntu 10.04 (UNR on EEE1101HA)

  I picked up an ASUS EEE 1101HA with Windows 7 and installed UBUNTU 10.04 Netbook Remix (dual boot). Ubuntu runs fine, but it doesn't recognize that the notebook LCD is 1388x768 and thus only offers 1024x768 and 800x600 as monitor resolution. So .. how can I tell it about that higher resolution? (Have root pwd & vi, una-bash-ed to use both.. ) UPDATE there is currently (early May 2010) no video-driver for the Intel GMA500 "Poulsbo" => no solution exists for now.

• Options to optimize lotus notes 8.5.X

  Has anyone found actually useful optimization methods for the bulky, fat, eclipse giant, nuissance that is Lotus Notes 8.5? I want it to be fast, and not eat up system resources like crazy while I run it ALL day (as it is my company's corporate mail / cal / scheduling solution). I've tried various hacks for the JVM heap size (if I recall correctly). None really bring a performance improvement. I have a dual core cpu, if that helps (I tried going the route of optimizing JAVA for 2 cores in hopes it would work, but seen no speed improvement). Notes is just sooo bloated, anyone have any suggestions to optimize/mod this thing so it is more responsive and less of a resource hog. Note: I don't want to switch to the web version, or the standard stripped down versions, I am aware of those, I just cannot since we don't run those internally for the company.

UPDATE - AutoUpdating list so the new sites are categorized and downloaded and the filtering is done by category instead of per site e.g. peerblock works this way Appliance as in a small dedicated hardware or device to perform this task, like WD TV live or Acer Aspire Revo with the media center edition I'd be ok with setting up Squid / Linux / SquidGuard even if i'm not familiar with *nix but ideally a small form factor pc with dual nic's would be ideal so it can be out of sight for the most part !

The site runs off a PHP and MySQL setup. The database gets an absolute hammering, we have many complex queries joining multilpe tables. We are using APC for PHP caching. I'm getting to the stage where I've done as much DB and query optimisation as I can and wonder what the next step should be...... I've looked at memcache, but I've got the impression that his requires a large amount of RAM and ideally a dedicated box.... So is the next step to have two boxes; one for database, one for Apache? Or is there a step I've overlooked. Our load is usually around the 2 mark, but right now it's up at 20!

• GRUB Problem or Hardware Problem?

  I have Windows XP Professional and Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 on dual boot. I often get a GRUB loading failed error during boot-up. Or sometimes, when I try to boot into either Ubuntu or XP, I get a Could not read from source error. Now this is funny. After getting one of the above errors, if I simply unplug the SATA cable from Hard Drive end and plug it again, the problem gets solved. So what and whose problem is it? GRUB or My Hardware ? • Can you recover from a backup with bad blocks?

  The hard drive in my Macbook recently gave up while using it on the plane (dual prop, lots of vibration unfortunately). I have a backup of its contents from a few weeks ago, but there are files that aren't included in it that I would like to recover. As it stands right now, I have it plugged to my macbook by USB. Snow leopard recognizes it, but can't mount it. Therefore, tools like Diskwarrior and Techtools do not work. I started doing a clone of it with Data Rescue 3, but after 7 hours of activity (20% through the drive), it has copied 130 GB of the drive but reports all of the data as "bad blocks". My question is this: Is any data recoverable if the clone is completely composed of bad blocks?

  For some reason pecl_http extension is not showing up in my test.php file with contains: <?php phpinfo(); ?> I just installed pecl_http using: pecl install pecl_http The install was successful and I verified it by running: pecl list Installed packages, channel pecl.php.net: ========================================= Package Version State mongo 1.2.10 stable pecl_http 1.7.4 stable I then located my php.ini file using: php -i | grep 'Configuration File' Configuration File (php.ini) Path => /etc/php5/cli Loaded Configuration File => /etc/php5/cli/php.ini I edited it in vim and added: extension=http.so Finally I restarted Nginx and PHP-FastCGI: /etc/init.d/nginx restart /etc/init.d/php-fastcgi stop /etc/init.d/php-fastcgi start My PHP extension_dir is : /usr/lib/php5/20090626 I verified that "http.so" is located in that directory. Any ideas why it's not loading? My machine is running a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit Profile on Linode. The only other extensions I have installed are New Relic and Mongo. Thanks!

• Bandwidth Control on our Internet Connection

  Hi all, I have Covad dual/bonded T1 service in our office coming through a Cisco 1841 and then through a Sonicwall 3060Pro/Enhanced SW firewall. The problem I'm looking for some input on is how to limit the amount of bandwidth any single user/PC can user for downloading a file from the Internet. It's become an issue that when one person happens to download let's say an ~300MB file, normal internet access for the other employees slows to a crawl. I've seen through MRTG that in fact usage of the circuit jumps to the full 3mb for the duration of the download and then drops. Is it possible to control this? I'm not familiar with QOS or the like so I'm not sure. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks...Michael

I would like to be able to limit the file size or the duration stored in each file. The tool can be for any operating system. I do not need anything fancy like song recognition, metadata or silence detection. I haven't been able to find such a piece of software so far. Example: Tap channel "News" results in: News-090902-0000-0100.mp3, News-090902-0100-0200.mp3, etc... Who knows what tool can do this? It can be commercial software. • GIMP Slow Startup

  Is there any way to speed up GIMP's startup time on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit 1.6 [Dual] Intel Processors? On XP [different computer], it loads in less than 3 seconds. On Vista, it takes 20 seconds: 2 Seconds (other - fonts, brushes, etc) 18 Seconds (extension-script-fu) It just freezes at extension-script-fu. Looking at ProcessExplorer (or Task Manager, whatever), I see that it's not taking any CPU. EDIT: it does seem to be taking 50% of the CPU. It gets stuck for about 18 seconds, then starts working again, and the actual GIMP program pops up [...finally]. I have the latest stable version running (I think). I tried it with XP SP2 Compatibiliy mode and/or Run As Administrator, but that didn't help. EDIT: One way would be to disable script-fu. Does anyone know how to disable it at startup? (NOTE: Just wanted to point out that the title and the tags are the same. :D )

• Slower wireless speed in Ubuntu 12.04 (64-bit) on Asus USB-N13

  I have an Asus USB-N13 which I use for wireless internet on my desktop. The download speed I get on Windows 7 (dual-boot) is 15.22 Mbps. On Ubuntu 12.04 (64-bit) I can only get 1.09 Mbps. I asked a question about this on the Ubuntu forums as well, but I did not get an answer. • IRC Server For 50 People?

  I've seen this question before and I am sure it will be fine but I want assurance before I do it. I am looking at running an IRC server with 128MB of ram and 500GB of BW. The server will usually handle at least 15 people throughout the whole day but there will be times where there can be at least 50 people in it maybe even more. I might also have a few extra channels on there so probably like at least 5 channels and the same people on the one channel will be in the other channels. Also I am trying to decide on the software to use.   I am following this manual to install Arch Linux from within another Linux distro with the help of an Arch Linux live CD. Here is what I did: sudo mount -o loop Downloads/archlinux-2012.11.01-dual.iso arch_iso/ unsquashfs -d squashfs-root/ arch_iso/arch/x86_64/root-image.fs.sfs This results in a directory squashfs-root/ containing one file: root-image.fs I assume that this is not what I want. I want to see something that looks like a Linux root folder. If I follow these steps: "mount the file system" with mount -B /squashfs-root ${livecd_arch} and mount -t proc /proc ${livecd_arch}/proc, I get error messages like: mount: mount point /home/me/arch_root//proc does not exist What am I missing?
