• windows 7 wireless knocks off other computers on the network

  I am trying to fix a wireless network issue. When a new windows 7 machine (we have 2 in the house) we have problems with any other windows xp machines connecting to the wireless network. I am using a linksys WRT110 running Firmware Version: 1.0.04 (which is not the latest firmware its Ver.1.0.07 but the router would not use the bin update file). I have tried a ton of variations in setting for the wireless network, changed the channel, the security level (none, wep wpa, wpa2), network type (g,bg mixed). I have also read some stuff about homegroup settings for windows 7 but have not seen any differences that make a difference. Basically windows 7 does not like to connect to our network but when I manage to get it to work the windows xp pro machines get kicked off. The windows xp pro machines are a few years old but both windows 7 machines are less than 6 months old.

Here are the basic specs: Dell PowerEdge R510 with up to 12 Hot Swap HDDs,LED Intel Xeon E5649 2.53GHz, 12M Cache, 5.86 GT/s QPI, 6 core (Quantity of 2) 48GB Memory (6x8GB), 1333MHz Dual Ranked RDIMMs for 2 Processors, Optimized PERC H700 Integrated RAID Controller, 1GB NV Cache 300GB 15K RPM SA SCSI 6Gbps 3.5in Hotplug Hard Drive (Quantity of 4) 600GB 15K RPM SA SCSI 6Gbps 3.5in Hotplug Hard Drive (Quantity of 6) My first thought was to use 3 arrays. OS - Raid 1 - (2)300GB T-Log - Raid 1 (2)300GB DB - Raid 5 (5) 600GB Backup - (1) 600GB - non-raided. However, I could also do the following after purchasing one more drive for backup. OS and T-Log - Raid 10 - (4)300GB DB - Raid 10 (6)600GB The hard drive space is not an issue as the databases are not that large. I'm just trying to optimize the speed of the applications using these databases. So, what would you guys recommend?

• ThinkPad T400 backlight doesn't always turn on when booting from battery

  I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T400, which I've owned for about a year. A while back, I noticed a problem in which the LED backlight would not always turn on when booting from battery. Usually, if I hold the power button down until the BIOS screen shows up, the backlight turns, but sometimes even that doesn't work. If I just press the power button and let it go right away, the backlight usually doesn't turn on. This happens before the OS (I dual-boot Linux and Windows) gets a chance to boot - the BIOS screen itself is displayed without the backlight if it fails to turn on, so the problem isn't at the OS level. Any ideas? Thanks!

  I am using Fedora 12, the problem I am facing is USB 2.0 write speed. I have a dual boot system with Windows XP and Fedora 12. USB 2.0 write speed in Windows XP is much faster then what I am getting in Fedora 12. After searching Google I came to know that ehci_hcd module is missing/not present in my system. ehci_hcd module is neither loaded nor it is present in the available list of modules. Can someone guide me how to fix this issue? Does ehci_hcd have something to do with USB 2.0 write speed? Do I have to recompile the kernel and add/enable the ehci_hcd module?

• USB DVD Drive not recognised in Windows 7

  I have an external DVD drive (USB) which I'm trying to attach to a notebook but it's not recognised by Windows 7. I can see the device in the control panel, says it's working properly but doesn't show up in the explorer window so can't access it. I've got a dual boot with Ubuntu and it shows up fine in there, no problems so I know the drive and connection are fine. Have tried the upper and lower filters but no success. We will be completely replacing the old 512 MB modules. Will there be any performance difference between installing 4 modules @ 1GB vs. 2 modules @ 2GB?

  I am currently dual-booting Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 with grub 1.98 as the bootloader. I recently decided to edit the grub menu to remove the old Ubuntu kernels, so I followed the instructions of this guide and added the line list='version_find_latest $list' to the 10_linux file, then ran sudo update-grub. Apparently I made a mistake, because upon restart I had these bootloader entries: Ubuntu, with Linux $list Ubuntu, with Linux $list (recovery mode) Ubuntu, with Linux version_find_latest Ubuntu, with Linux version_find_latest (recovery mode) When I try to load any of these, I get a grub error along the lines of, Error: not a normal file Now I can't start any version of Ubuntu to remove the line I added. What's the best course of action to be able to use Ubuntu again? Thanks.

  I have a mouse that I absolutely love (been using them for years), A4Tech WOP-35. It has dual scrollers and 5 buttons, 3 of the buttons are programmable. I use them at work and at home. At work I am using Windows 7 Enterprise (32 bit), at home I am using Windows 7 Professional (64 bit). The drivers installed easily on my machine at work. Unfortunately, they will not install on my computer at home. When I double click on the Setup.exe, it asks me if I want to install it, and of course I click on "Yes", but nothing happens. When I say nothing happens, I mean nothing happens; it appears that it doesn't even try to install. The same thing happens when I right click on the setup.exe and select run as administrator. How can I get around this? I am guessing it is because I am running the 64 bit version of Windows.

  I want to maximize the throughput of a data transfer between two servers. The copy will be made at the application layer using Robocopy. To clear things up, please check my Visio schema of the network: FS1---------(SW1)===========(SW2)--------- FS2 SW1 to SW2 is connected through 10 gigabit Fiber Channel ethernet FS1 to SW1 is connected through 1 gigabit ethernet FS2 to SW2 is connected through 1 gigabit ethernet I first idea I've come up with is to use LACP, so I could use two Gigabit Ethernet between each server and the switch. A collegue told me that LACP is for availability and not performance, so he reckon this solution will not work. Is he right? Do I have other options? Thank you very much

• How to vertically split widescreen into two virtual workspaces on ubuntu/gnome?

  My new laptop has a big 16:9 screen, and I'm finding it hard to fully utilize it during the 95% of the time that I'm not watching HD movies on it. I'd like to set it up as a kind of virtual dual screen by splitting the physical screen into two workspaces. I know I could arrange my windows manually, but I'd like to be able to maximize a window and have it only consume half the monitor, and have its pop up dialogs centered on its half-screen, that sort of thing. • Will Dolphin emulator run (smoothly) on this machine?

  Product Specs: Intel® NM10 Express chipset /w Intel® Atom® D525 (dual-core, 1.8 GHz) I think the most I can put in there for RAM is 4 GB. (They don't make 8 GB SODIMM do they?) The Dolphin site is pretty vague about requirements: Windows XP or higher, or Linux, or MacOSX Intel Fast CPU with SSE2. GPU with Pixel Shader 2.0 or greater. Some integrated graphics chips work but it depends on the model (and only with DirectX 9). I'm trying to make a light-weight quiet little machine for streaming video and playing eumulators, and I'm trying to figure out the minimum requirements I will need to do what I want. I know I'm not supposed to ask for product recommendations here, so if you could just advise the minimum requirements in terms of CPU, graphics card, and RAM, that'd be helpful.

Just wandering what I would have to keep to prevent me having to reinstall my OSs, at the moment I have a dual boot setup with ubuntu and windows 7. I'm pretty sure you can't just take your hard drive with the OS on it and put it into a different box and keep going (can you?) but I know you can change the graphics cards, secondary hard drives and ram with out a problem. • Intel video driver upgrade now makes my external monitor display red-only with HDMI cable.

  I have an HP G60 notebook with a Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset video display (Driver version is 8.15.10.2021). OS is Win7 Home Premium. I also have an LG widescreen display that I was connecting to the laptop using an HDMI cable. It was working great, until I applied an Intel 4 Series Express Chipset update from Windows Update. After the update, if I plug the laptop to the monitor using the HDMI cable, it appears I only get the Magenta channel, cause that is all I see. If I connect with the VGA cable, it works fine. So, is it possible it is just the HDMI cable (which IS cheap in this case - fire sale at Blockbuster), and not related to the video driver update at all?

  I have an Intel motherboard (DH67CL) that uses Intel HD 3000 video. It has two video output ports: HDMI and DVI. Both my monitors are DVI, so I have two cables: a DVI-DVI and an HDMI-DVI. If I plug a monitor into just one of these ports, things work fine. But if I plug monitors into each of the ports, the system startup screens show on both monitors, along with the "Starting Windows..." screen, but as soon as the system boots into Windows, the HDMI-connected monitor goes to sleep. When I use the Intel video control panel, the HDMI-connected monitor is not detected. How do I get a dual-monitor setup to work?

• Vista won't boot - just get black screen

  When I boot into Windows Vista (Ultimate), I just get a black screen (with the mouse visible and working). If I run in safe mode, it seems to pause for a while when loading crcdisk.sys. A lot of research says it could be a problem with the hard drive, but I dual boot Ubuntu and that works fine and I can still see and use the Windows partition absolutely fine from Ubuntu. I tried using the "startup repair" option on the Vista install disk but it didn't detect any problems. I have run chkdsk several times, with this: chkdsk C: /f /r And also drive D (the recycle bin). The first two times it detected and fixed errors on the C drive but now it doesn't detect any errors. Is there anything else that could be causing this problem?

I want a faster development environment but I don't want to spend too much money. So the choice I have is between $390 for a Linux desktop machine with a Pentium Dual Core Processor E5400 and just paying between $30 and $40 a month to Linode and trying to do development remotely on that server. Can anyone with experience developing server applications using both methods offer any advice?

  Hi there, I have a dual boot system on dell xps 9000 with windows 7 and ubuntu. But after I performed system backup on it as requested by windows 7 I am no longer able to boot into the computer, instead at the beginning after bios I get the following message: Grub loading. The symbol ' ' not found. Aborted. Press any key... I tried to change bios booting config to starting with harddrive and it still returned the same message. Using windows boot disk only asks me to do another system backup or threatens to delete my harddrive completely. The only solution I have so far is to reinstall ubuntu, but that leaves 2 additional copies of ubuntu on my computer. Is there a simpler way to fix the situation so I can actually boot into windows? • Caching DNS server (bind9.2) CPU usage is so so so high.

  Hi, I have a caching-only dns server which get ~3k queries per second. Here is specs: Xeon dual-core 2,8GHz 4GB of RAM Centos 5x (kernel 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5PAE) bind 9.4.2 rndc status: recursive clients: 666/4900/5000 About 300 new queries (not in cache) per second. Bind always uses 100% on one core on single-thread config. After I recompiled it to multi-thread, it uses nearly 200% on two core :( No iowait, only sys and user. I searched around but didn't see any info about how bind use CPU. Why does it become bottleneck? One more thing, here is RAM usage: cat /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 4147876 kB MemFree: 1863972 kB Buffers: 143632 kB Cached: 372792 kB SwapCached: 0 kB Active: 1916804 kB Inactive: 276056 kB I've set max-cache-size to 0 to make sure bind can use as much RAM as it want, but it always stop at ~2GB. Since every second we got not cached queries so theoretically RAM must be exhausted but it wasn't. Do you have any idea? TIA, -Gk
