• Excel data into PowerPoint slides

  I have already found some helpful sites but I'm still unable to do what I want. My Excel file contains few columns and multiple rows. All the data from one row would be in one slide but data from different cells in that one row should go to a specific elements in PP slide. At first, is it possible to export data from an Excel cell into a specific text box in PP? For example, I would like to have all data from the first column of each row go to a Text box 1. Let's say I have 100 rows so I would have 100 slides and each slide would have Text bow 1 with correct data. Text box of slide 66 would have data from the first column of row 66. Then all data from the second column of each row would go to a text bow 2 and so on. I tried to do some macros with bad success. I also tried to use Word outlines and export them into PP (New slide - Slides from Outline) but there seems to be a bug since I got 250 pages of gibberish. I had only two paragraphs and both had one word. First paragraph used Heading 1 style and second paragraph used Normal style. Sites what I have found, use VB and/or some other programming language to create slides from Excel sheets. I have tried to add those VB codes into my macros but none of them hasn't worked so far. • How to compress .pdfs in word 2007?

  Hi I am trying to send my cover letter and resume away but apparently it is too big to send through craigs list(my computer says the total size is 500kb) as it has a 600kb limit(so small should be at least a meg). Hi there. You recently tried to email Some job Email, an anonymous craigslist address. However, your message was too big to be sent through our system. Craigslist has a 600KB limit on the messages we'll send. Please reduce the size of your mail and try again. Thanks for using craigslist. So when I convert my word 2007(.docx) files to pdf they become huge. Like they got from 32kb to 320kb. So is there a way I can either get around craigslist limits or compress my pdfs a bit to make it happy. I don't want to send zips and stuff since the person who gets it might not even know what to do. I rather not send .docx since not sure if will have office 2007 or the compatibility view installed and I rather just send it as pdf(as some place require it anyways to be in pdfs). Thanks

• Surface (Pro) Soft Keyboard + Hardware Keyboard Issue

  When I got my Surface Pro 2, I loved it, and everything seemed to work flawlessly, until, wait for it, windows updates... The issue that I am having is the following, I primarily use the TC (TypeCover), as the Pro is an out-of-office laptop replacement for me, that I can still use to do whatever I need, but there are times when I will flip the cover, and use the system in tablet mode. The problem is that even when the TC is attached, any text field I click on, causes the OSK (on screen keyboard) to appear, as if I was running the system in tablet mode. As soon as I press a single button on the TC, the OSK is dismissed. When I first got the system, this was NOT the case, and it functioned as it should, where the OSK will only appear if the TC was not present. The biggest problem that I am having is the fact that the OSK causes the windows to be resized. Maximized windows will be shrunk, and stretched to their previous state, however a window that is not maximized will stay in its shrunken state, after the OSK has been dismissed. Below are pictures that show what is happening. Has anyone else experienced this issue? And is there any way to fix it? As you might imagine, having spent a pretty penny on a device like this, it it quite an annoying bug that needs fixing. I have been dealing with this issue for about 3 months now.

• How to remove Character Style in Word 2003

  I am copying text into a Word document that has its styles protected. Some of the text has a Character style applied to it that I would like to remove. I can change the style and it looks okay visually, but when you click inside the text itself you can see in the style menu that the Character style is still applied. I try to change the style using the style drop down but the Character style won't go away even if I change it to the Paragraph style. Does anyone know what I am talking about and/or have any techniques for removing Character styles? I am looking forward to your responses. Let me know if I need to clarify. Thanks! UPDATE: My issue is that the Paragraph style is changing correctly, but the Character style remains applied even though the text is displayed as if the style is not applied. There are four types of styles — paragraph, character, list, and table (list and table styles are new as of Word 2002). However, the majority of styles you'll use are paragraph styles.

• EXCEL workbook, intermitently, takes 30 seconds to load

  I am trying to figure out why a simple .XLS EXCEL workbook is taking, randomly, 30 seconds to open. Before answering: Please, bear mind the following: Problem symptoms Hanging is intermitent and it takes exactly 30 seconds; During hanging there is no cpu or disk activity; It only happens during workbook load. Every runs smooth after that; Windows Explorer.exe hangs on folder, but all other folders, system and applications are still responsive; There are no consecutive hangings. I have to wait for while to reproduce this behaviour; All workbooks where located on a local drive (C:\BPI); The workbook has no macros and no addins; Office 2003 is being used for several years; The computer is running Windows XP; Computer has several network mapped drives, all addressed to main file server; Recently, main fileserver was replaced by Windows 2011 SBS Standard Edition What I have done so far I have traced machine Explorer.exe, using Process Monitor, added Duration column, and filtered by Duration 1. That's is how I found that hanging was taking exactly 30 seconds. For further information, please refer to Oliver Salzburg tutorial. Using Process Monitor, I have also figured out than five operations were taking most of sample collecting duration. Looking at sample image below, column Operation below you will notice that one single operation was taking 29 seconds; I have tried different workbooks (all of them smaller than 30 KB); I have, temporarily, removed all shortcuts on User Document's folder that were pointing to network drives or shares; I have runned CCleaner to fix registry issues; I made sure that there were no external links on tested workbooks; I have reproduced this behaviour for hours; I have extensivelly researched for hours on the web; Process Monitor's collected and filtered data

• MS Excel 2010 - Using DSN + 32 bit drivers

  I need some advice as im running into a problem and so far i have been unable to find a solution. We have a set of reports developed in MS Excel that use DSN file to connect to data sources to retrieve data, these work fine on 32 / 64bit systems, however we are moving to a terminal server environment using windows 2008 R2 64Bit. The reports fail to run using the DSN's within this environment if we only have the 32bit drivers installed and configured in the ODBC settings, the minute we install the 64Bit drivers the software works. Is there a way / Method of getting Excel or the DSN file to NOT use the 64Bit driver, but force it to use the 32bit driver. ANSWERED - But due to low user score i cannot "answer" my own question... Sadly there is no way to-do what i want to-do, without a lot of very nasty and not 100% perfect reg hacks. • MS Excel and Access - which is better for reports?

  Where I work, staff have just started to use a basic table in excel (1 october) to record sales which has about 10 columns (name, client, renewed, discount, paid etc). I record the data (total sold etc) every hour and email it to the manager. Each staff has the their own file on the network which they use constantly for that day (eg. John 08-10.xlsx; John 09-10.xlsx etc) and have been told to save the file after they complete a row with client data. I can see the file (in read only mode) to update the report but I am sure there must be a way of doing an autoupdate of their worksheets in real time. I can link worksheets and workbooks to my main workbook but manually. Does anyone have suggestions on have to do this on Excel? Or would Access allow me to make a report which shows the sales total for that hour without the staff closing the file or constantly clicking save every few minutes? We use office 2010. thanks

In other word, have a look at the following pic: 1 -> 222 -> 3 111 -> 2 -> 333 11 -> 22 -> 33 11 -> 2222 -> 3333 Suppose that - is indicated one TAB. As you see, each column is justified from left. I need to fill each TAB with Spaces, so that the justification not be confused. If I use 'Find & Replace' option to change each TABs to a specific number of Spaces, justification will be confused because each column have its own character number. In other word, if I change each TAB with 6 Spaces, the above will be changed to the follow: 1 222 3 111 2 333 11 22 33 11 2222 3333 My need is as follow (each dot indicate a Space): 1......222......3 111....2........333 11.....22.......33 11.....2222.....3333

• MS Word TOC that references # pages rather than page number

  We frequently need to write specifications in Word which require a TOC that refers to the total number of pages in a section, rather than the page number. E.g., Section No. Pages 01010 Summary of Work..............5 01025 Prices.......................2 01400 Quality Control..............1 01700 Contract Close Out...........2 A wrinkle is that each section is a separate file. To date, we've been writing or TOC by hand, which has introduced every error imaginable. Is there an MS feature that populates a TOC with page totals? If not, I've done a little VB in Office, so wouldn't be opposed to that route as need be, as long as it was usable by our low tech users. Related question - all the section files are in the same folder. It would be nice if the TOC loaded every file in a folder, rather than having to specify each one. Is this a feature of Word or would this require VB? We tried a master document with links to subdocuments, but since the number of section files ebbs and flows with each project, the approach required too much maintenance for our Wordophobes.

• Outlook 2010 - Missing New Mail Envelope Icon

  I've seen a number of posts related to this issue, but none with a solution that works for me. I have: Windows 7 Professional 64 bit Office/Outlook 2010 "Show an envelope icon in the taskbar" checked "Hide When Minmized" selected "Show icon and notifications" selected for Outlook in my taskbar settings This used to show me the envelope icon in my notifications area. Then something happened with my user profile and the sys admins created me a new one. Since then, the envelope only displays if Outlook is not minimized. It doesn't matter if I unselect "Hide When Minmized", the icon still doesn't display when new mail arrives. If I select "Display a Desktop Alert", then the icon is displayed. However, I HATE the desktop alert as I find it too intrusive/distracting. Is there some way to just get the envelope icon working (again)? UPDATE More testing and sometimes I will and sometimes I won't get an envelope icon with the desktop alert turned on. This is driving me nuts!! UPDATE TWO I like my notification area of the taskbar to be clean. So, all icons are set to "Only show notifications" except for Outlook as noted above. I've noticed the envelope icon is being displayed in the expanded notification area when I click on the up arrow to view all icons. So, it is being added to the notification area, but not displayed. It's a rather useless feature now...

• Handy SQL Server Functions Series (HSSFS) Part 2.0 - Prelude to Parsing Patterns Properly

  In Part 1 of the series I wrote about 2 lesser-known and somewhat undocumented functions. In this part, I'm going to cover some familiar string functions like Substring(), Parsename(), Patindex(), and Charindex() and delve into their strengths and weaknesses. I'm also splitting this part up into sub-parts to help focus on a particular technique and/or problem with the technique, hence the Part 2.0. Consider this a composite post, or com-post, if you will. (It may just turn out to be a pile of sh_t after all) I'll be using a contrived example, perhaps the most frustratingly useful, or usefully frustrating, function in SQL Server: @@VERSION. Contrived, because there are better ways to get the information (which I'll cover later); frustrating, because of the way Microsoft formatted the value; and useful because it does have 1 or 2 bits of information not found elsewhere. First let's take a look at the output of @@VERSION: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1600.1 (Intel X86) Apr 2 2010 15:53:02 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Developer Edition on Windows NT 5.1 <X86> (Build 2600: Service Pack 3) There are 4 lines, with lines 2-4 indented with a tab character.  In case your browser (or this blog software) doesn't show it correctly, I gave each line a different color.  While this PRINTs nicely, if you SELECT @@VERSION in grid mode it all runs together because it ignores carriage return/line feed (CR/LF) characters.  Not fatal, but annoying. Note that @@VERSION's output will vary depending on edition and version of SQL Server, and also the OS it's installed on.  Despite the differences, the output is laid out the same way and the relevant pieces are in the same order.   I have some sites in IIS7 that are configured to run as domain users (MYDOMAIN\someuser). Any tips on how I can either allow ServerManager to decrypt this, or just tell IIS to store the passwords in plain text? This is on IIS7 under Windows 7 RC, by the way.

• Microsoft.Win32.TaskScheduler NOT FOUND - I want to import this namespace in VB.NET

  I have been looking at sample online code for interfacing with the Windows Task Scheduler, and most of them import the namespace: Microsoft.Win32.TaskScheduler When I go to import it, it's not there within Win32. Does anyone know why I can't import it? I'm assuming something isn't registered correctly on my machine, but I can't fiugre out how to fix it. Just for the record, I can start the Scheduled Task component under Accessories. I've using VS 2008 (VB.Net) with Windows XP professional. Thanks.

• GCC vs Microsoft : Undefined reference to `_chkstk'?

  I am using CodeBlocks and MinGW toolchain which is essentially GCC. I was using VStudio but I want to get away from it to do cross platform development. There seems to be some microsoft specific references in some libraries that I am linking, specifically in CXImage SDK (_chkstk). I presume the library was put together using VS. From my searches I have learned that GCC uses _alloca rather than _chkstk. I still want to use CXImage for some stuff I am doing. My question: Is there a way around this problem or am I stuck with ditching libs such as this if I want to use GCC?

• How to paste metafile from Microsoft Word at expected size

  I'm having an issue in a WPF application using the RichTextBox where content being pasted in from Microsoft Word is mangled. To work around the issue, I found that Word includes a metafile on the clipboard, and I can get the metafile from the clipboard using interop (WPF wouldn't properly import the metafile either). My problem, though, is that a metafile is scalable and so whether a user pastes a whole page of content or a small amount, the metafile claims that its Width is 4390. However, if I strip the clipboard of everything but the metafile and paste it into MSPaint, the resulting bitmap in paint has properly scaled the pasted metafile, so it seems to me that there must be some information somewhere that indicates the real size. Does anyone know how to get the proper expected size of the Metafile?

  I am soon to start with Microsoft Robotics Studio. My question is to all the gurus of MSRS, Can simple simulation (as obstacle avoidance and wall following) be done without any hardware ? Does MSRS have 3-dimensional as well as 2-dimensional rendering? As of now I do not have any hardware and I am only interested in simulation, when I have the robot hardware I may try to interface it! • Problem creating site using Microsoft Visual Web Developer Express 2008

  Hi, this is a very newbie question, sorry! I need to create an aspx website based con C# and am calling some webservices based on some DLL's I already have. Beforem purchasing Visual Studio, I decided to try Microsoft Visual Web Developer Express (is this ok?) creating a Web Application ASP.NET based on Visual C#. I created the form to enter the data which is submitted when clicking the process button. At this point I need to call stuff from the DLL, which I have added in the Solution Explorer via Add Reference, selecting the DLL from the COM list. But whenever I run the project, I always get the error "the type or namespace xxx cannot be found - maybe a using directive or assembler directive is missing" when trying to create the object. What is my stupid mistake? Thanks!

• Converting Microsoft Word Smart Quotes to Straight Quotes

  We have a program where the user needs to do a Copy-Paste some content from Microsoft Word into a HTML editor (Visual Studio 2008). That content in the HTML is then used in our confirmation emails. Some of the characters like curly quotes turn into ? on the browser & in our confirmation email. For the browser... I was able to find how to resolve this issue by using jQuery. But for the confirmation email I cannot use JavaScript. • Merge Microsoft Word documents with TortoiseSVN

  TortoiseSVN has a nice VBA script that allows to merge Microsoft Word documents using Word builtin change tracking functionality. This way, when I merge changes from a branch into the trunk I can resolve the conflicts in Word documents. However, the feature is not as useful as it could because it doesn't track revision changes; it just compares the two documents as a whole. This way, when I merge a revision where one paragraph was added to the document I'm not offered to review this paragraph. Instead, I have to review all the differences between the source and target documents (including stuff like TOC bookmark names). Is it an inherent limitation I cannot override? Or is it due to the fact that my Word version is pretty old? (I'm using Word 2002). Also, if you know about a magic tool or plugin... ;-)

• Page containing Microsoft Chart Control returns Service Unavailable

  I have a frustrating problem with an asp.net mvc view containing the Microsoft Chart control. When I request the view containing the control I get the following error. Service Unavailable HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. When I run the project under the visual studio 2008 dev server it works fine. When I deploy the project to the staging server I get the error. To make this even more frustrating when I deploy to a different site on the same server under a virtual directory it works. I also get no error messages in the event log or elmah when this happens. Has anyone else encountered this? What did you do to resolve it?

  I'm using the office 2007 interop assemblies to create some excel spreadsheets. There are plenty of questions on here about getting started and MSDN contains heaps of articles, like this one. The API is funky, and sometimes a bit confusing. When I set a value of a cell, is there a way to set it's format? I'd like to mark particular fields as Date's so my customer can run excel macros on them. Also, numbers would be useful. Thanks!

  I am new to Microsoft Detours. I have installed it to trace the system calls a process makes. I run the following commands which I got from the web syelogd.exe /q C:\Users\xxx\Desktop\log.txt withdll.exe /d:traceapi.dll C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe I get the log file. The problem is I don't fully understand what is happening here. How does detours work? How does it trace the system calls? Also I don't know how to read the output in log.txt. Here is one line in log.txt 20101221060413329 2912 50.60: traceapi: 001 GetCurrentThreadId() Finally I want to get the stack trace of the process. How can I get that?
