• HP Ambient Light Sensor Adjustment

  I have an HP nc4400 running Windows 7 64 bit. If I have the ambient light sensor enabled, it works well, but, its slightly too dim. I can turn off the light sensor and turn up the brightness manually and its more than bright enough. When I go to the brightness settings in Windows I can make the screen dimmer with the ambient light sensor enabled but cannot make it as bright as if it is disabled. So my question is, is it possible to keep the light sensor enabled but configure it so that the screen is brighter for given "ambient light". At the moment I have to turn it off whenever I'm in the office or outside in sunlight as I need the screen as bright as possible and it seems no matter how light it is, it never goes to full brightness when it's enabled.

• Connecting a USB laptop to a RJ45 serial port

  We are about to get our first managed switch at work (Procurve 2520G-24-PoE), and this lowly programmer gets to put on his admin hat and try to configure it. The switch has an RJ45 serial port for console access. My laptop has USB ports but no serial port. In fact, there isn't a single computer in the office with a serial port. I've seen USB-to-DB9 adapters, but I need to go from USB to RJ45 (serial). How would I go about accomplishing this? Do I need two adapters? Will USB-to-DB9 and then DB9-to-RJ45 work? • Airport Express configuration

  We are trying to set up remote access to a computer that houses a server fro a particular program we are running. The program says we need to configure the office router. In the firewall settings it says to open ports 5345-5351 (TCP only). Port Forwarding: You will also need to forward the same range of ports (5345-5351) to the computer running the Server. This typically requires that the computer running the Server be assigned a static IP on the local network. Having trouble figuring out which IP address we actually need to be using on the client side of this program in order to access the server computer. Can someone walk through this process?? We are working on Mac OSX 10.5. Thank you in advance!

• Why does a Windows 7 installation grow so seriously and how to shring it?

  I store all my data and the most of applications (those legally available in "portable" versions) on drive D: and only use drive C: for the Windows system and some heavily integrated applications like MS Office, Visual Studio, Adobe Reader, Flash Player etc. When I was using Windows XP, 50 GiB drive C: was more than enough. Now, as I've mitigated to Windows 7, it hardly is. Yesterday as I've checked, 7 GiBs were free on drive C:. Then I've installed fresh Windows updates (which were just some tens of MiBs to download) and checked again: now there are only 2 GiBs free. Where have 5 GiBs gone? PS: Don't be surprised my system installation takes actually that much: I've got Visual Studio and SQL Server with complete offline documentation library, but that doesn't explain where does free space disappear on simple Windows updates. PPS: I use an augmented CCleaner version to clean my PC every day, so there are for sure no temporary internet files of recycle bin trash files taking the place.

• Suggested benchmark for testing CPU footprint of antivirus software

  Our organization is currently running Symantec Corporate Antivirus, which is rumored to be a big resource hog. I know that we do have a lot of older machines that are running slow. Our PCs are all running Windows XP Pro and are used only for business applications (mostly Microsoft Office), e-mail, and web surfing. They're not used for gaming (one would hope not, anyway). I'd like to take one of the old PCs and do a speed benchmark test while it's running Symantec AV, then another test with no antivirus, and a third test with ESET NOD32. As I said, I don't care much about graphics performance. What would be an appropriate benchmarking program program to use? Freeware is best, of course. Thank you for considering my question.

• users unable to add registry keys to HKCU

  I may not have this 100% correct so need some clarification. Are normal users on a 2003 terminal server allowed to add registry keys the their own HKCU section in the registry, or are they only allowed to edit existing ones? The reason I ask is that we have 3 keys that we need to add for each user on login. I thought it would be as simple as having a straightforward batchscript run that silently adds the keys for the user. Here is what I used: regedit.exe "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\example.reg" When the user runs this batch scipt, they see nothing as you would expect, but the keys are not added. If I simply run the .reg file as the user, it asks if I want to add the key, but then has an error saying there was an error accessing the registry. Do I need something a bit more complex to accomplish this task. • Windows 7 freezing unexpectedly

  I have a Windows 7 computer here, which is freezing between 2 times a day and 1 time every second day. I see no problem, no special drivers, no special Apps are open, no encryption or something like that. Apps usually open then are Firefox, Thunderbird, Eclipse and maybe Office. Computer is just freezing. No Reboot, no shutdown, no bluescreen and no error. User has to hardreset it. Eventlog shows me an kernel error saying it has been unexpected rebooted due to an fatal error, but no statement about what kind of error happended. Anyone an idea what it can be? Chkdisk should be ok (currently, I run it a second time).

  I replaced my first iPhone (upgraded from version 1 to 3G) about 18 months ago. Since the upgrade, my original iPhone has been just sitting on shelf in my office. I am thinking about dusting off my old iPhone, reactivating through AT&T and giving it to my wife. The phone hasn't been used for quite some time and the battery is completely dead. I'm not sure about iPhone battery lifetimes, but I'm questioning whether a charge will keep. Should I invest in a new iPhone or take a chance reactivating the old one?

• DFS-R + Volume Shadow Services - Run VSS at all locations or one?

  I have 4 servers, one at each office location, each sharing read/write copies of 1.5TB of data. Changes are replicated 24/7 between all 4 servers via DFS-R. All servers run Windows 2008 R2. I'm interested in implementing VSS (Volume Shadow Services) on this data. I've read that DFS-R and VSS play nicely together, but I'm left with one unanswered question: turn on VSS at all locations or just one (the headquarters). Can I run VSS at all 4 locations safely, or is it wiser to run it at just 1 location? Thanks!

  In our office the setup is like we have a UBUNTU server with DHCP Server connected to all the PCS via 24 port and 8 port DLink switches. How can I find all the PCS(with client name, ip and mac address)in the network?? When I do "vi /var/lib/dhcp3/dhcpd.leases", I get all the ip addresses for the switches. I have used "arp-scan --interface=eth0 --localnet" to get all the IPs and MAC Addresses in my local network. I couldn't find any option to diplay client name. Also I would like to assign particular IP for a particular PC. I have done the changes in the dhcp.conf file but it is not working as they are not directly connected to DHCP-server(DLink switches in between). How can I assign IPs for PCs in this kind of setup. • Setting up 2 external monitors on a laptop with VGA splitter

  I have a laptop with a graphics card that supports 2 displays. I would like to know the easiest way to set it up so I can close my laptop lid and use 2 external monitors (unique displays). I use it primarily for office applications and video and want a quality, clear picture. The laptop has 1 VGA port and I have 2 24" 1920x1200 monitors that have VGA and DVI ports. So a few questions: Can I just use a VGA splitter? (seen mixed feedback on this) Would it a VGA to 2 DVI splitter give a better picture quality?   It seems that all the wireless laptops in the office have disconnected and are unable to reconnect to the wifi after a terrible storm caused some power interruptions. Troubleshooting actions Verify wireless broadcasting is up With each laptop i ended up flushing their dns cache on Win 7 (ipconfig /flush ) Performed an ipconfig /all to see what the new ip is Made sure password was correct Reset the router (multiple times) restarted each laptop. Tried connecting wirelessly Am i missing some small detail ? Network information The router is a linksys/cisco WRVS4400N router. Supports a lot of fancy features i don't know how to use. • Command-line access for Apple Time Machine?

  We use Apple's Time Machine to back up our workstations at the office. If I want to restore a file, I need to open up the Time Machine GUI and browse files there. The GUI is ugly eye-candy and gets in my way. Is there a way to browse the Time Machine archive using the Mac's command-line? I'm used to Netapps and other storage appliances. I use backintime for my Ubuntu workstation. To restore a file with one of those systems, you can restore a file with a simple command like: cp .snapshot/daily.0/filename.txt . or cp /backup/backintime/20100611-000002/backup/etc/shadow /etc/shadow Is there an equivalent for Apple's Time Machine?

• Using Folder Redirection GPO and Offline Files and Folders

  I want to use Folder Redirection to redirect user's My Documents to a network share. First question is: What is best practices for mapping the drive? Should I use the profile tab in AD with the %username% variable, or a net use logon script, or something else? Second question is: How do I deal with laptops and syncing the network with the local storage? I want to have 2-way syncing so if they manually map their networked home drive and edit it from a different computer, it will sync the newer version to their My Documents folder the next time they connect their normal work computer. I also want to be sure that if they edit a file offline on their laptop while away from the office, that the network version syncs the changes the next time they connect that laptop. Please advise best practices for this scenario in a 2008 R2/Win7 environment. I am also interested in Mac clients for this environment, and while I am very Mac savvy, I would like to hear what others consider to be best practices for Mac network homedirs in a Win environment.

  hi all, now this is really annoying - i'm having a global problem in win7: when using the system's "save as"-filedialog, the main app will just hang. the mouse-cursor is showing progress, the whole app is hanging and i need to terminate it manually. it's happening with every app! • Snow Leopard crashes my Xerox printer

  Just set up 2 brand new iMac 21.5" with OS X 10.6.2 pre-installed in our office. Now whenever we try to print an e-mail out, it re-sets the printer i.e. it switches off, does a POST and prints out a Printer Config page. I can print web pages and from other apps fine, just Apple Mail seems to be suffering. Printer is a Xerox Phaser 7750. I downloaded the drivers it recommended when i first tried printing which didn't help and then also tried downloading from the Xerox site. The latter seemed to install fine but then right at the end, it would say 'Installation Successful', then ask me to choose a printer (it found it fine, both by Bonjour and Raw TCP - i tried both) and then it would give an error message. Any help appreciated.

  I have an Asterisk box serving an office of people. I'd like to provide instant messaging and file sharing capabilities alongside the voice and video capabilities provided by Asterisk (ala Windows Live Messenger, Skype etc). Asterisk does not seem to offer IM outside the context of a SIP call, nor am I aware that it provides file transferring capabilities whatsoever. The clients will be using Jitsi, so there are many protocols to choose from, but I'd like to provide as much integration as possible between the VoIP and IM/file transfer (ideally a single account that facilitates voice/video and IM/file transfer). Is this possible, and if not, what would be the most appropriate alternative? Thank you.

• Best way to split LAN computers on two WANs (not load balancing)

  What is the best way to split the computers of a LAN (about 50 computers) to go on two WANs, depending on the computers' IP address or computers' configuration (gateway). I'm not looking for load-balancing, I need to be able to route which computer uses which Internet connection. A solution would be to rewire the old office to split the two distinct groups that need to use two different Internet connections but I'm not sure it's worth it at the moment. I have a pfSense router configured with the LAN (DHCP), WAN1 and WAN2. I also have the IP addresses (and ability to configure) the next router on WAN1 and the one on WAN2. What would you suggest? Routing based on IP addresses ranges? Different gateways? VLANs would be difficult for the same reason as to why rewire is a bit complicated. Thanks!

Almost every time I use the standard Windows (XP) File Open/Save Dialog I get frustrated in how long it takes me to navigate to where I want to go. :-( (I won't even get into the MS Office dialog that makes things even worse) This is the dialog I'm referring to (with some notes) Notes: Wouldn't a Drive list be handy in here? C:\, D:\, E:\, etc. What about a breadcrumb URI? (the magenta list of links) Why isn't Program Files one of the icons on the left? (green) I'm always going in there for something Why can't I type "../../../" to navigate up multiple directories in the File name box? (blue) There has got to be some utilities out there that can "hijack" or "overwrite" this core windows dialog to provide a much better set of options. I'm looking for any/all solutions to help fix this dialog.

• Provisioning SIP Phones over the internet

  I have a few SIP Phones that are located of site and connect to my PBX over the internet to make calls. For some reason one of these phones has become unprovisioned. In my office phones get provisioned by the server via TFTP. The ones that I have off site I pre-provisioned manually before I sent them off-site (I'm in Florida the phone is in New Jersey). Whats the best way to provision these over the internet? TFTP is very insecure. Sending the plain text profiles with the SIP Account and Password over the internet is out of the question. The phones have been off-site for about 6 months without any issues. Im using Trixbox and Cisco 7940 Phones.

• Windows 2008 R2 Task Scheduler triggered an event for unknown reasons.

  Today I arrived at the office only to find that a task, which was scheduled to trigger at 5:30PM EST each Friday, had triggered on its own at 6:01AM EST this morning. I checked the event logs as well as the task schedule log and all of the evidence points to a timed trigger starting this task with the correct credentials, however the task history reports the task has not been triggered since last Friday when it ran to completion successfully. I do not have this task set to random start times or start if missed. This is the first time I have observed this happen in the Windows Task Scheduler and want to know if anyone else has come across this, why it happened and how to fix it?

• When browsing a specific network share remotely, Windows Explorer continuously jumps back to the parent folder

  I am accessing a specific network path on another domain. It looks something like this: \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\Inetpub\Testing\Website\ In under 30 seconds, I am automatically jumped back to \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\Inetpub\Testing\ In less time it then jumps back to \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\Inetpub\ Then it jumps back to c$ for its final resting place. \\CoputerName.OtherDomain.in\c$\ At first I thought this had to with a faulty keyboard, but this behaviour also occurs when the window does not have focus. It's as if windows thinks that the folder no longer exists (as in someone else has deleted or moved it). This behaviour is not specific to my PC either, it occurs from other machines in the office. Edit: It looks like this issue only occurs from other Windows 7 machines. There are no issues accessing the path from XP.

  I am currently drawing up specs on a new workstation for my office. I am considering the Asus P6X58D for a motherboard. This board's specs list it as supporting 24 gigs of memory. Suppose I were to use six four gig memory cards and then two video cards with 1 gig of memory apiece. Is the maximum supported memory similar to how 32 bit operating systems only have enough address space for 4 gigs of memory? Simply: Will the board post? If so, will the system be able to address all the memory, both the 24 gigs on the ddr3 bus and the 3 gigs on the graphics card?
