• How can invoke a shell to make a new environment to run a make inside another make?

  I would like in my GNUmakefile to have a target rule that invokes a new shell and then with the clean slate of the new shell invokes a new make. What is the syntax to do this? I tried this but it didn't work: .PHONY: setup setup: shell cd myDir; make; cd ..   I am trying to replicate a forum function by getting the last reply of a post. For clarity, see PHPBB: there are four columns, and the last column is what I like to replicate. I have my tables created as such: discussion_id (primary key) user_id parent_id comment status pubdate I was thinking of creating a Link Table that would update for each time the post is replied to. The link table would be as follow: discussion_id (primary key) last_user_id last_user_update However, I am hoping that theres a advance query to achieve this method. That is, grabbing each Parent Discussion, and finding the last reply in each of those Parent Discussions. Am I right that there is such a query?

  I have a parent master table that is generic enough to hold the common information of the children. Since the children were substantially different, we created separate tables for them. So I have something like this: tblMaster -------- MasterID int Name varchar(50) --Common to all children and there are a bunch of fields like this ChildType int -- Type of Child either ChildOne or ChildTwo ChildID int -- need to store ChildOneID or ChildTwoID depending on type of Child, so that i can refer to children tblChild1 -------- ChildOneID int IDENTITY tblChild2 --------- ChildTwoID int IDENTITY Should I have a ChildID in the master that is either ChildOneID or ChildTwoID based on the ChildType column? I have a number of children and I have simplified it for this question. The other way is to add ChildOneID and ChildTwoID as columns in the master, but since i have a number of columns, I will have a lot of null columns EDIT: Any help is appreciated

• xVal ignoring fields that are hidden

  I have a form where a user can toggle receiving funds either via check or via electronic transfer. When they choose either way in a list box, the respective part of the form hides. If they choose electronic transfer only bank info fields show, if they choose via check only address info shows and the bank fields are hidden. Well, since they choose one way or another I want to, not validate for something that is hidden. (Client Side) Is there a way to set xVal to only validate fields that are not visible?   This is my scenario I have an view(page) with list of items, a user could select single or multiple items from this page and click on a "Add to Group" button. Then a modal dialog(JQuery dialog) will be shown, from that he could select group, then press the add button. Which causes the items selected in the parent page is added to that particular group. So, which is the best way to pass the selected items to the modal pop-up? Though the query string ? - what happens if the no:of items selected is large, will the url support that much characters Keep the list in the parent page in a javascript variable and return the selected group from the modal pop-up? So if District "1.1.1" is a child of District "1.1", which is a child of District "1", getting Ancestors on District "1.1.1" would return a list that contains the District objects whose names are "1.1" and "1". Does this involve the yield return statement (I never totally understood that)? Can it be done in one line?

  This is probably a dumb question, but I've hit a wall with this one at this current time. I have some data which is hierarchial in nature which is in an ADO.NEt dataset. The first field is the ID, the second is the Name, the third is the Parent ID. ID NAME Parent ID 1 Air Handling NULL 2 Compressor 1 3 Motor 4 4 Compressor 1 5 Motor 2 6 Controller 4 7 Controller 2 So the tree would look like the following: 1- Air Handling 4- Compressor 6 - Controller 3 - Motor 2- Compressor 7- Controller 5 - Motor What I'm trying to figure our is how to get the dataset in the same order that ths would be viewed in a treeview, which in this case is the levels at the appropriate levels for the nodes and then the children at the appropriate levels sorted by the name. It would be like binding this to a treeview and then simply working your way down the nodes to get the right order. Any links or direction would be greatly appreciated.

• Combining multiple UIImageViews and preserve resolution

  I am designing an application where a user places multiple UIImageViews one over another. When the user decides to save this to photo album, I have to combine all these UIImageViews and save it to Photo Library. While combining them I need to preserve their positions, resolutions, zorder. The approach I tried I was to have a parent UIView which acts like a container. The user places all the UIImageViews inside this UIView. While saving, I take a screenshot of the UIView and save it. Although this approach works, it does not preserve the resolution. The resolution of the final image is same as the resolution of the parent UIView size (width and height being 300 pixels). Is there way to preserve the resolution? or atleast have a higher resolution like upto 1024* 1024 pixels? Any pointers/code examples would be appreciated!

  Hi, Today I faced one question in interview. Is it possible to apply inheritance concept on Singleton Classes. I said since the constructor is private, we cannot extend that Singleton class (can someone please validate this). Next thing he asked me is to apply inheritance on that Singleton class. So, I made the Singleton's constructor as protected thinking that child's constructor also has be protected. But I was wrong the child can have a modifier either equal to or higher than that. So, I asked him to give a real world example on such a case. He was not able to give me one and said that I cant ask questions and wanted me to tell whether this scenario is possible or not. I went kind of blank. My question here is, Is this possible? Even if its possible, what is the use of it? What real world scenario would demand such a use. Thanks

  Assume we have the following Swing application: final JFrame frame = new JFrame(); final JPanel outer = new JPanel(); frame.add(outer); JComponent inner = new SomeSpecialComponent(); outer.add(inner); So in this example we simply have an outer panel in the frame and a special component in the panel. This special component must do something when it is hidden and shown. But the problem is that setVisible() is called on the outer panel and not on the special component. So I can't override the setVisible method in the special component and I also can't use a component listener on it. I could register the listener on the parent component but what if the outer panel is also in another panel and this outer outer panel is hidden? Is there an easier solution than recursively adding componentlisteners to all parent components to detect a visibility change in SomeSpecialComponent?

  I try to apply MVP pattern for win.forms application. I have 2 forms: main & child. Main has a button and when you click it - child form should appear. There are 2 views interfaces that forms implement IMainView { event OnClick; ... } IChildView { ... } There are two presenters MainPresenter(IMainView) & ChildPresenter(IChildView) MainPresenter listens to OnClick event and then should create IChildView implementation. MainPresenter { ... MainClicked() { // it's required to create IChildView instance here } } How would you implement such creation typically? But along the way, I developed more passion for seeing the system work - actually, I wrote in my eDiary "...I want to see this child of mine grow...". The work did mature indeed, and is now a successful system employed in analysis of academic progress in my client's schools. What am really wondering is whether it might help me more (or even other programmers) if this notion of approaching software development as if it were a task of raising one's child could help deliver better software and probably more lovable software :)

• ModalPopupExtender doesn't work on IE6 frame layout

  I'm using a "frame" layout similar to the one in this excellent answer: a div #top at the top of the page, a div#left on the left, and a div #main with the main content. The #top and #left divs contain navigation menus. Now I want to use a popup div using the AjaxControlToolkit ModalPopupExtender inside the content (#main) div. This works fine on IE8 (where #top, #left, #main all have position:fixed), but when I run it on IE6, the modal background only covers the #main div - I need it to cover the whole of the page including the #top and #left navigation divs. Looking at the script for ModalPopupExtender, it appears to be searching up the parent hierarchy until it finds a parent with position relative or absolute. And in the IE6 rendering, the #main div has position:absolute because position:fixed is not supported, which I guess explains what is happening. Any suggestions for the best/easiest way to get this working properly on IE6? Ideally without modifying the ModalPopupExtender code, but I'll do this if I have to and it's the best solution.

• Database design: How should I add an information which can apply to several tables

  I am constructing a database System using Mysql, this will be an application of about 20 tables. The system contains information on farmers, we work with organic certification and need to record a lot of info for that. In my system, there are related parent-child tables for farmers, producing years and fields/areas - it's a simple representation of the real world in which farmers farm crops on their fields. I now need to add several status flags for each one of these levels: a farmer can be certified, or his field can be, or the specific year can be; each of these flags has several states and can occur a number of times. The obvious solution to this would be to add a child table to every one of these tables, and define the states there. What I wonder if there is an easier way to do this to avoid getting to many tables? Where/how would be best practise to keep that data?

I assume it needs some sort of e.at_xpath() to find the div.control-group parent and add the .error class to it but I'm not sure how to do this. Can anyone help? PS This may all be possible using the formtastic or simple_form gems but I'd rather just use my own html if possible. EDIT If I put e['class'] = 'foo' in the if e.node_name.eql? 'label' section then it applies the class to the label so I think I just need to find the parent tag of e and then apply an .error class to it but I can't figure out what the xpath would be to get from label to its div.control-group parent; no combination of dots, slashes or whatever seems to work but xpath isn't my strong point.
